Yea , Greg would often say that he is the second voice of Iroh, they made Iroh speaking less even if he is big part of 3 book and wanted Mako to be voice of Iroh. And just to ad salt to the wound, writing of the picture can be translated to "General Iroh See you after the victory Your faithful son Lu Ten" so him singing about soildier boy coming back from war is even sadder because last words from his son are about him fighting till the end

I believe this episode was supposed to be a backstory of Iroh and his battle at Ba Sing Se years ago, a flashback episode of his 600 day seige of the wall, and the loss of his son. Mako, Irohs voice actor was really sick at this point, on his deathbed, and could only do the couple scenes, so they added all the other little "tales of Ba Sing Se" to fill the episode. The song at the end of Irohs tale was supposedly one of the last recordings of Mako.
IF you aren't in tears after the "Tales of Iroh"...you might actually be dead. Your reaction was perfection. Iroh is one of the top 5 fictional characters...EVER. Mako was a true talent.
"Damn, that had no business being so sad" We feel you you, it hurts no matter how many times you've seen it. But it was necessary. And it was another cool easter egg. Back in season 1 when Iro was writing home about his current battle in Ba Sing Sa he was writing those letters in front of the same tree!
The man who voices Iroh was Mako. He had throat cancer when singing the song leaves from the vine. He died a few days later. The boy in the photo at the end of the film was Mako when he was younger.
Another fact, the girl in pink outfit in "tale of aang" that lose her cat (fluffykins) was actually a "make a wish" kid. Her wish actually to go to the studio to meet cast and crews. But the creators offered to draw her and gave her a line. The character drawn to look like her, even the outfit too.
When you said you were tearing up the _first_ time Iroh sang "Leaves from the Vine". I immediately knew that you were _not_ ready for the reprise, but then again, no one is. It always makes me cry too. Something about the voice acting is so realistically mournful.
at the end of the video when you ask why he would sing the same song twice this episode, they did it not only to introduce the song in a fun way before you get hit with the big emotions on the second time but i like to think that they showed him singing the song to this kid to imply that this was probably the lullaby that he would sing to his own son when he was little. If true, this also adds another level of pain to the moment when he sings it at the picknick

In a way, he celebrates his son’s short life by helping/trying to be the father figure he was meant to be to the people he’s met. It’s also the commoners of Ba Sing Se, the very city that HE besieged many years ago (the very city where his son died during the attack). But he doesn’t blame them as he believes that he had a bigger hand in the loss of his son. Iroh just helping anyone and everyone is what he does best. Which makes him saying “if only I could’ve helped you” to his son even more heartbreaking. The original voice actor for Iroh, famed legend Mako Iwamatsu, died July 21, 2006 (age 72) after a brief period of suffering from esophageal cancer. He was able to voice all of his lines for this season before his passing and even provided his voice while bedridden including this song. It's a thing of beauty when a tale or performance can work on your more delicate emotions to that extent. Last time that happened to me was in a Korean series called thirty-nine (which everyone should see). 5:33 - 6:19 When it comes to wisdom, Iroh is the best. Mako Iwamatsu did an incredible job as the voice of Iroh. May he rest in peace. Props to Greg Baldwin. His voice acting was brilliant in the next episodes.
Baldwin didn't voice Mako until season 3, and a few scenes here and there the rest of the season (the moment with the kids playing earth-soccer being one of them). The majority of Iroh's scenes (both before and after this episode) were still voiced by Mako.
Iroh made us all cry, you're definitely not alone. If anything it just shows how incredible his character is to have such a massive impact on the audience.
I must have no soul cuz even when i was little (now 25) i never cried when he sang and even when i learned what was on the letter of his son what makes it even more sad i dont cry
We have words for children who have lost their parents and adults who have lost their spouses, things seen as natural and expected. There is no word for a parent who has lost their child. They are lost, part of a nameless group far larger than any would like to admit.
To rub salt into the wound, the portrait of Lu Ten is based on Mako at a younger age and the inscription translates, "General Iroh, I will see you again when victory is obtained. Your loyal son, Lu Ten." It is speculated that this was the last correspondence between Iroh and his son before Lu Ten's death in the Siege of Ba Sing Se.
He is also at the site where Lu Ten was buried. It's even more tragic when you realize this is the first time in years he has been able to properly visit his son's grave. Just heartbreaking for character as kind as Iroh to have to bear such sadness.

W for letting the whole scene play out too
The fact that Iroh celebrate his son birthday in the place where his son died is even sadder
We have words for children who have lost their parents and adults who have lost their spouses, things seen as natural and expected. There is no word for a parent who has lost their child. They are lost, part of a nameless group far larger than any would like to admit.
Sadness and anger are the emotions of the next episode (and rightfully so)
Everybody gangster til Iroh starts singing Leaves From The Vine
lmaoo cabbage guy went through serpents pass thats funny
btw mako was the first voice of Iroh, he dies 2 month before this episode
I cry everytime and I'm a 46 year old that's been through some shit.
I didn't expect this to be uploaded today. thanks!
Next episode bring tissues. Also take a drink everytime she says "Appaaaa 😢"
Iroh is mentally the strongest character in the show. So me having to see him in such a mood is just that moving.
