As a VERY proud United States Marine - this is exactly what I needed to see today. Exactly 29 years ago today I was called a Marine for the 1st time at MCRD San Diego during my Bootcamp graduation. Hoorah!
I sure hope they solved the problems also, they had a deadly crash in Japan that killed eight service members last fall and several crashes before that one over the years.
They publish $230M, but I think that's the parts only. Decades of developing and overruns have been forgotten. I'd much rather fly in a 53 or 47, survivable auto rotation.
I think the problem is mostly pilot error with these weird machines. I watched one crash video that caused one of the groundings and the pilot got into trouble with turbulence when he got level or below the deck ( much like Australia's blackhawk crash off the the back of hmas Manoora(?). I figure ( as an ex-commercial pilot) that when the blades are semi set between full on forward flight and helicopter mode ( like the engine are between the mode shown on test flight hear and say 45° the blades would be very sensitive to pitch stall if the airflow changed ( naturally caused turbulence) direction/ angle of flow and the the blades suffered dynamic stall. That would cause a unexpected pitch/yaw movement that catch you out if you don't have the altitude to recover.
Great response, I have been told by several pilots that pilot error's while flying the V-22 does lead up to failure and possible crash. Thank you for your comment 👍😎
Can confirm they are flying again. Saw three of them chasing two VH-3D Whitetops between Moffet Field and SFO during three sorties Tuesday (to make sure there weren’t any stages with tripping hazards on the route) and Friday. I probably missed a few sorties. I wonder how many rubber chickens they had to sell in Atherton to pay for fuel, crew, & maintenance.
They look amazing in those colors! I saw a few fly in last year when the POTUS was in town. Stunning to see in real time. What is their mission, and what are they carrying? POTUS was in a motorcade.
16 crashes since 1991 62 killed. A completely new approach to flying and figuring out the envelope over that time it’s not such a terrible record. Media hype, the competition and its unusual flight characteristics have made it a target. Unfortunately progress sometimes has risks. I think tilt rotors are here to stay and will be part of aviation from now on.
Media hype? If they didn't report on the aircraft's safety record no one would be aware of the unusual flight characteristics caused by inherent intractable clutch issues?
@@chrissmith7669 It is orders of magnitude worse because the deaths in the V22 are all attributed to inherent intractable design and engineering issues. Not operational error and misuse as in the Blackhawk.
