- I switched to DaVinci Resolve after a few years in Premiere Pro and I can honestly say I wish I would have done it sooner.
Its so worth the initial challenges of learning another editor.
I made the switch about 3 years ago and I'm go happy that I did. Yes, it does crash from time to time, but so infrequently. The auto-save feature means I never really lose anything. For the first year and a half I was even able to get away with the free version before finally upgrading. And the latest versions have been huge leaps forward. I've never looked back!
Awesome to hear! Yeah I feel the same way after finally gaining the courage to switch from premiere!!
It's refreshing to see that you keep the integrity of your initial takes by refraining from the removal of "mistakes" etc. It makes the listening experience authentic. Fantastic video brother. Thank you!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words :)
Dope video! have been loving it for the last 2 years and it just keeps getting better!
Totally! I am enjoying it more and more!!
I have been using adobe since Premiere Pro CS3, more than 15 years. I cancelled my adobe subscription yesterday and have moved fully to Resolve. The Resolve 18 update has changed everything.
Thats amazing. Welcome to the team!! Its a great program to grow into!!
Lots of absolute truth here.. everything I thought of when I was trying to decide to make the switch.. literally I was tired of cs6 short comings.. in terms of video card usage.. lack of adobe support for it, lack of true color grading tools.. lack of or rather having to go from premiere to aftereffects.. etc.. that I was soooo close to going with adobe's subscription.. till I came across DaVinci.. I was literally an Adobe fan boy.. but after seen everything you talk about in this video.. plus other things like how much better DaVinci is at taking advantage of NOT just a good cpu but a good gpu aswell.. I said to my self.. hey why don't I try the free version of DaVinci.. I tried it for a week.. and I was no longer an Adobe fan boy.. as a matter of fact .. I feel I was taken advantage of for many years.. DaVinci it the best.. and I won't go back to Adobe.. (ONLY FOR PHOTOSHOP AND ILLUSTRATOR).. nothing else..period.
Welcome to the DaVinci team!! Happy to have you, and totally fair I still use photoshop and Illustrator too! Glad you have found something you really enjoy, more content on DaVinci to come!
I agree with you. It was a hard decision to give up on premiere. In premiere I had crashes and after adding some effects premier would be crazy slow. I thought my PC was dated so I dropped close to 10,000 USD on an Alienware Desktop and almost no change. Adobe did little to nothing to help me so I moved to DaVinci. From a stability and speed POV I never had issues in 1 year of usage, and aside from missing all the LUTS and Effects I bought for Premiere, everything else is a much better experience
It was such a challenging move, I totally get that feeling! Thats tough that you had to spend that much for no change!! Now you have an outstanding computer that can handle anything you throw into resolve!! Im glad the experience is better for you!
Yes to all of the above!
Switching to resolve has been the best thing to enable creativity.
I am so glad we agree!! Its now something I look forward to work with!
@@Josh_Johnston funny you say that - one of my recent videos is about how I went from hating editing to loving it. And yes resolve is part of that transformation
@@CreativeTies_ Thats so good!! Yeah I really relate to that :)
it’s crazy how these videos been popping up in my feed lately but Premiere still works just fine for me no glitches all up to date it’ll crash from time to time but it saved my projects to the point where I’d reboot it and it would open up exactly where I left off maybe I’m lucky?? idk BUT imma definitely give Davinci a go for the editing side but imma still rock with Premiere
Totally fair!! Yeah if it works thats great!! I just think that DaVinci's Color page specifically is really hard to beat!
It was hard to move for me to DaVinci because I purchased so many luts and effects on premiere, but the constant crashes and the slow editing speed made me pull the trigger on DaVinci... I was first convinced that my PC is bad, and went ahead and I dropped close to 10k on the best Alienware I could afford, but but that didn't fix anything. It was slightly smoother but constant crashes were always happening. So far using DaVinci for 1 year I can't recall having crashes. I had to reboot my PC a couple of times because it was moving slow but overall it is stable. I miss the effects I had in premiere.
Awesome video! Nice to see some of the ways that Resolve outperforms Premiere, lots of information in there.
Yeah I think its worth checking out, but hey you already knew that!
Nodes are much better than layers for VFX, layers are easier for motion graphics. Great video.
FYI, Fusion was being used to make thousands of movies and tv shows like a decade ago, it was the industry standard before Nuke became industry standard. It used to cost 6k before BM bought it. Now it's literally free or 300 one time, compared to Nuke being 12k. That's a tools that used to cost that much and now being available for free is nuts. Resolve used to cost 800k back in the 80s-90s and used in the biggest production houses and now you can get it for free. And people still chose to use adobe products smh.
WOW!! Thats incredible that we get access to such amazing tools now for such a low cost compared to 40 - 50 years ago. Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the background info that I had no idea about!!!
@Young Humanity check out the video - Complete history of Davinci Resolve by the youtuber- A funny looking Squash
@@mrmalio Okay! Ill have to give it a watch, thanks for the recommendation!
Yep...
$250,000 to $850,000
First, it's important to understand the DaVinci Resolve software you see today is very different to the product it was when we acquired it 10 years ago. Originally it was a colour correction only system that was sold at a price of $250,000 to $850,000, depending on the configuration.Jan 16, 2019
Final Cut Studio 2 trained, moved to Pr years ago. Recently migrated from Pr to Resolve only for two reasons, superior color grading and dynamic zoom (which saves TONS of time for live music video editing)
It’s nice to be able to navigate pages and color grade while editing.
YES! Dynamic zoom is such a great tool that they included. Welcome to DaVinci we are happy to have you on the team!
i literally just bought it today . just hope it is worth it . appreciate the content
It so will be! Takes some time to learn, but so worth it!
Honestly bro I like what you're doing. Keep up the good work
I have been a black magic user for about 5 years now and I also use davinci resolve. I can guarantee ill never use another program ever again . I'm never going back to final ✂️ lol
Wow thank you!! I really appreciate your kind words! I cannot see my self leaving now, I'm enjoying the Resolve too much!
Solid video! This is funny because I just downloaded Resolve for my ipad so this is timely!
Thank you!! Yeah I recently did too, I am excited to see the possibilities of it on my IPad!!
@@Josh_Johnston I agree! Please keep us updated with videos. I plan on making ipad content on my channel as well!
@@bigbtechproductions Will do!! And thats awesome, we need all the information out there when it comes to such a great tool making its way to a product so many people have!
you don't even need Photoshop anymore, nor Illustator, cause Affinity Photo and Designer are amazing, and much cheaper. 50 $ each, for an entire version+subversions, and a new major version comes in ca. 2 years out. (between v1 and v2 there where 5 years).
And you could continue and use your prior owned version aswell, if you are ok with that, and don't need the new tools and enhancements.
Yeah those are great alternatives to photoshop and Illustrator!! It really is just the push past what we might be normally comfortable with, so worth it!
It's a reason they use Davinci Resolve for coloring in many Hollywood movies, since they are one of the best out there.
And it is so easy to use. When I started this channel back in 2018, I switched to Davinci Resolve after I got a tip about it as the best free editor out there. Now I use Studio version because it's so much faster.
It has been a wonderful switch for me as well! The coloring page is really just a joy to work in!
great video and you explained my issue. I was testing DaVinci the free version and I would pull in my footage and only got audio, well its because I record in 10bit color. Thanks sir. I may buy it and just force myself to learn it so I can get rid of Adobe Premire and drop my subscription to photoshop/lightroom
It was one of the best moves I have made, I am thrilled to be off of the subscription train.
I have been using davinci more lately, coming from Final Cut Pro,used premier before but did not really like it, but davinci is definitely worth jumping to ,In am pretty competent with the colour page, now learning the cut and edit page in detail now, then gradually start getting into fusion also.
Yeah its so worth the trail, especially with there being a free version! Fusion is a little confusing at first but it gets better!
I'm lucky as I took a hunch and went with Da Vinci so I'm still learning the ropes. Amazing amount of features for free too
SO many great features!! I'm planning on creating some tutorials to help with the change over soon!
Great video. I'm considering the switch right now. I'm so fed up with Premiere Pro, constantly reorganizing my workspace, freezing up or shutting down on me, even though my system is perfectly capable. And now, PP is telling me my GPU will no longer be supported after the next update. It was so hard to learn Premiere Pro, I was resistant to learning a new platform. But, now, I just want to trade in my constant frustration, and start enjoying editing.
Congrats! You'll love DaVinci Resolve, for sure!
I am 100% sure so many lessons you learned in Premiere will transfer over into DaVinci. Yes there are a whole bunch of new things, but when I made the jump I was thankful for the foundation of knowledge I had coming from Premiere!!
I spend most of my time in the Fusion tab, but I also love the color tab. I use the Color Space Transform to quickly correct and grade log footage. I also love tracking masks on the color page. Also, the depth map node makes creating 3D scenes quick.
So much good stuff! Yeah, I work in a color managed work flow, works amazing with all of my SLOG 3 footage!!
Premiere is dead… resolve is where its at
I switched from Sony Vegas and Final Cut Pro a year ago. The first time I used Adobe Premiere was 15 years ago.
Back in the day, DaVinci Resolve cost between $250,000 and $850,000.
First, it's important to understand the DaVinci Resolve software you see today is very different to the product it was when we acquired it 10 years ago. Originally it was a colour correction only system that was sold at a price of $250,000 to $850,000, depending on the configuration.

Yeah it was very different back then! Now its so well suited for a mix of creators at a much more affordable price! Thanks goodness!!
DaVinci is an absolute game changer for me.
Glad it is! It certainly was for me!
For those wondering about audio plugins for fairlight page for the free version; VST2 and VST3 both work.
Awesome! Thanks for that update Daniel, I appreciate it!
@@Josh_Johnston you're welcome :)
Great look at Davinci. I've found the speed editor to be an amazing extra that makes editing in studio so quick and easy it's crazy. Sadly, many industries are wedded to Adobe as the standard, so I would be escaping my big Adobe bill any time soon, but whenever the option is there, I reach for Davinci.
I knowwww, I look forward to the day where DaVinci is more main stream!! I'm excited to get my own speed editor soon!!
the Davinci keyboard might be the reason I make the switch tonight, since it looks like it will work, and provides a Davinici License.
It's an amazing combo!!!
If you use premeire Pro you need to assign a hotkey to hard reboot your PC. Davinci is not magic and it can crash but it crashes better due to autosave and almost never requiring reboot after crash. It loads quickly right were you left off. Basically it crashes less and better.
The autosave has been a life saver several times for me! I appreciate your insight!!
I don't think those trade-offs are worth switching from Adobe because I use Lightroom, Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro a lot for my workflow
And that is totally understandable. I had to make a rather major switch to my workflow, was a slow start but I do find that I am as fast or faster now then I was working entirely in the Adobe Suite!
The free version does not have multiple GPU support.
You are totally right!! It was not one of the main reasons why I went for the studio version, but its certainly a good one!
Really? I use the free version in my M1 MacBook Pro, and the are some basic functions that already gi e a lag in the preview when working with 4K 24fps GoPro shots. Hope to get the Studio Version soon
Ofx is ok in free version, I use the Ignite plugins from Hitfilm, it work well.
I found it so inconsistent on which ones did and which ones didn't, I had some that did not work at all. But I am glad those work for you!!
@@Josh_Johnston I haven't try another ofx so perhaps I'm lucky with Home FX plugins.
@@stephanenicault4939 Totally yeah! You never know, there are sooooo many plug ins out there would be impossible to test all of them!
I like Resolve, but I'd have to respectfully disagree with some ideas in this video. I've been a filmmaker and editor for 25+ years. Great content creation mostly just comes down to great content. A really talented editor or cinematographer can take the cheapest and simplest tools available and out-create almost anyone with more flashy gear. Some of the best film editors in the business are not only still cutting on AVID, but their post-houses aren't using Resolve at all. Heck, my post-house just dropped Resolve for higher-end software with more features. So really, it's all just in your skill-set and in how much craft you've learned. When I watch a film or video, I can't, for the life of me, tell what it was cut on or how it was colored. But I can definitely tell you if it was an engaging piece of content or not. Good color correction will not save bad content. Anyway, keep it up. Fun channel.
I totally get where you are coming from! At the end of the day its simply a tool and those who know how to wield it will do an amazing job. I was more opening the door for the new comers to try out this really solid and free software to begin their content creation journey. I appreciate you commenting and watching :)
I have the Davinci Resolve Speed Editor Keyboard but I made the mistake of not getting the version with the Studio key so I had to buy my key...DOH!!!
BTW I LOVE the Speed Editor
I found the Studio version helped with timeline playback and rendering speed, a 10 min 4 k video would take about 30-45 mins I think it was and with Studio using my GPU for rendering it takes just a few minutes, I am really happy i took the leap to Studio
Agh!! Thats rough but yeah I have heard great things about it, I am thinking of picking it up soon! Glad to hear another great recommendation for it!
@@Josh_Johnston I don’t use my speed editor anywhere near what it’s capable of.
@@PubRunner I always enjoy products that I can really spend some time learning and diving deep to get it to its fullest potential! I am excited to look to get mine soon!
I don't get it, 324 subs!! that's weird, it should've 324k subs. Anyways, nice video, got to try resolve studio out, the free version is kinda choppy I don't know why but every time I make a split, it lags while playing the part(videos are 1080p). Do you have any solutions for that?(Actually I was looking for a better solution for that but didn't find any and youtube suggested me your video). Anyways I am your 325th subscriber
WOW thank you so much!!! Hmm an idea to try is to right click the footage in your media pool and see if you can find generate proxies! It essentially makes lower resolution files for you to use that makes it wayy easier on your computer to handle. The best part, when you go to render Resolve will automatically switch the proxies out for your real footage! Hope that works!
The Alternatives for photoshop are: Photopea and Affinity Photo
The Alternative for Illustrator is : Affinity Designer.
And all those apps are either 1 time payments or free
Yeah exactly, there are great alternatives out there!
Don't forget GIMP for photoshop & Inkscape for illustrator
I used davinchi before, it is way easier and user friendly vs premier pro. I'll consider upgrading my davinchi Resolve!
Thats great!! Yeah I would highly recommend it!
Welcome to resolve!!!!!!! I used premiere for 1 month, I spend 5 thousand dollars on an I mac only to realize premiere was the problem 🤦🏽♂️
Thank you!! Very happy to be here. OUCH yeah thats a bit unfortunate but now you have an amazing computer and an amazing editing software.
I made the switch 4-5 years ago and I’m happy I did. Especially now since I’m becoming a colorist. Resolve is so much better.
That's so good!! Its outstanding for colour, Ive been watching many tutorials to help improve my colouring game.
@@Josh_Johnston right now I’m learning from sidney baker green if it helps.
@@JaymesMedia Awesome! Yeah Ill have too check her out! Thanks!!
@@Josh_Johnston awesome
When I tried DaVinci Resolve free version, I was stunt how fast I can edit my videos
Thats great!! Welcome to the DaVinci community :D
Davinci maybe better than Premiere.
But I use Premiere because I can select the Italian language.
This Davinci has everything except the choice of language in Italian.
And as an Italian I got bored with speaking or writing in English or other languages..
That is 100% understandable! Hopefully BlackMagic adds that someday!
How do you deal with stabilization? The Stabilization in Davinci is terrible. Warpo Stableizer is wat better, especially in after effects.
Yeah, it took me a while to figure it out, but I still do find with tweaking the stabilizer settings in DaVinci resolve (like changing from perspective to the other 2 options) I can get some solid results!
great video!
Thank you!
I much prefer Davinci Resolve for the workflow and slickness design of the interface >> the CUT page is a speed editing dream for a rough cut timeline >> love the transitions interface and the colour grading is just excellent compared to my experience in PP for some reason... I still use both for collaborative reasons and yet much prefer Davinci Resolve 👌💯👀🎯🎥😎🌟
I whole heartily agree!! Yeah I sometimes have to use premiere because of a client but I much more prefer using DaVinci!!
I am a fan of DaVinci Resolve. I joined the video editing world about 2 years ago and quickly changed from iMovie to DaVinci… it was a crucial point for the hole process... As you pointed, it is an almost perfect program for editing. In my bike videos, it`s also crucial to make some color grading basics, if you want a better image quality, and the color tab is a beutiful creation with all those scopes and color wheels. I had a very fast learning curve using the program, and hope to guet the studio version as soon as possible. I still use the free version. I`m sure that the lifetime subscription of the studio version is a good deal, but here in Brasil it costs about 3 times more than anywhere…😢😅
I had no idea it costs so much more in Brazil!! Thats a bummer, but the free version is still soo good! I adore the color page!!
@@Josh_Johnston it costs more than R$3.000 (reais), while in US$295... Ohh, i was wrong, it costs more than 10 times :(
@@andrelcunha87 OUCH!!! Well hopefully the studio version can help with all your needs for a while!
I love Resolve, it's fast, efficient, has great features readily available (like Dynamic Zoom) but I only use it for simple editing and color correction, most of my work involves motion graphics so I have to keep using the PP and AE dynamic link workflow. Fusion just doesn't do it for me.
Fair enough!! I get the convenience of that workflow, personally I have started to enjoy the fusion workflow but it certainly took some work to learn.
o0o00www one day i'll change ... thank you for this video
You are so welcome! And hey there will never be a perfect day to switch, sometimes you just have to try and see what happens! Good luck!!
Finalcut for me, thanks!
Thats totally fair! I have heard great things about Final Cut, to be honest I never really dabbled with it, but all the power to you!
unfortunately, Davinci requires and takes great CPU processing power and it was just freezing my PC I just had to uninstall install, no even sure if they will ever work on it so it can run smoothly with less resources!
Its interesting because I found that on my Macbook Pro from 2019 that it runs better on my computer than even Premiere did. Hopefully it can work on your computer someday - I do know the studio version helps improve the processing!
free vs studio resolve - most important misses . Free version is limited to use of gpu. Studio version utilizes all resourses from gpu.
You are 100% correct, its a big upgrade! Thanks for pointing that out!
Affinity to replace photoshop illustrator and escape from adobe
Thats a solid path to take!! I have not found the time to switch to Affinity yet but I have heard great things about it!
Nice
Thank you!!
I've used all these editing programs like Premier and Final Cut Pro X and resolve is by far the most powerful of them. except for one critical unexcusable difference. Resolve has a nasty tendency to corrupt projects. The entire project gets corrupted and it's gone. You can use many workarounds and most of the time if you put enough effort you can get your data back but be warned. I've never had that problem with Premiere or Final Cut Pro things get corrupted but it's not a total loss.
From all the research I did, I did not come up on anything with corruptions on DaVinci's side of things (not to say it can't by any means). From what I read the way DaVinci stores its videos in its own Database helps with most corruption problems. If Premiere and Final cut work for you in that sense great!! All the power to you!
wow, nearly 3 years a video editor.
You know its not a ton of time in the game, but its been the thing I have been most passionate about, looking forward to many more!
tell Me what's the mic thanks
I was using the RODE shotgun mic in this video!
Great video!
I’d try to highlight you a little bit more with light. The light in the background so brighter than you. This is a little distracting. ;)

Davinci Resolve free does support 10 bit color and even 12 bit. It is just a few select codecs that is studio only. Xavc and H265 10bit. But the color engine is the same. You could still edit h264, Prores or DNxHD and many others with no limits except resolution above 4k and some plugins
Its interesting because I found my 4K footage with H.264 codec I used on my a7sIII did not want to work at all! But hey that is great that it has those possibilities, makes the free version such a great option to try!
Has this always been the case? I have tried using XAVC S 4K 4:2:2 10 bit clip before (windows version) and was getting an error message about the 10bit. Tried it again but on a Mac and everything works now without upgrading to the studio version
@@anton9410 Honestly I am unsure if this has always been the case, but no matter what I did without converting it to Prores or something, it just error'd out everytime!
@@Josh_Johnston yeah definitely lots of nuances that take time to understand hahah
Should make the switch to get out of UA-cam as a content creator because to the platform is all out promoting the big guys and hiding the small.

davinci sucks i never can get a high quality video even if i try set everything on high or render in 4K cause YT hates me and compress my HD videos

Another great editing software for sure, just not something I have had time to invest into learning!
Not supporting adobe automatically makes you a better person
Haha I do appreciate that, I am happy with the change over! :)
When title like these say "editor", they always gonna include fusion/color page/Fairlight. You guys have to make clear distinction that "editors", mean you edit. Offline editors, Online editors in film, they only "edit"
Edit page/project page = editors, fusion = compositor, color page = colorist, Fairlight = audio mixer/engineer. I wouldn't called Ollie Kenchington an editor, that would be insulting to an amazing colorist like him.
I love resolve for color grading, I absolutely do but by version 18, edit page is still suck as balls.
I wish people would stop making titles like "I become a better editor," "switching to resolve makes me a better a better editor". You didn't, it just makes it easier to do other non editing operations without going through the xml bullshits
I totally agree with you!! Yeah I think I need to be more mindful of my wording but I appreciate your perspective and watching through the video. I think instead of video editor I'll change it to content creator. Hopefully that helps clarify some things :D
What your saying Isn't incorrect and I do agree ,but you are taking this way too serious my brother
