Wow. I somehow just found this video - thanks for including me! Appreciate all the comments. Stewart obviously played it best and it’s very hard to imagine The Police without him… but I also enjoy watching Vinnie Colaiuta play a lot of their songs when on the road with Sting. I always look at him as the super polished version of Stewart. What I love about Stewart is that he almost always played the songs different live (a lot of improv) but still managed to keep the feel of the song! That’s what I was going for here…mixing a little bit of everything - the studio recording, improvising and combining everything I’ve heard him play *live* (but not forcing it)…he’s one of my fav and I used to listen to the box set and live videos daily. So, it comes very natural to me. Props to all the other drummers who covered this - super fun to watch everyone’s take! Check out my Roxanne cover: ua-cam.com/video/2WbdYNUcgzU/v-deo.html

For those who missed it or are just unaware: At 0:16 that's Alan Wilder of Depeche Mode. And while his cameo here had me in stitches (I'm a die hard DM fanboy!), he also played drums on numerous DM tracks, self taught if I remember correctly. There’s a few instances of him doing it live, on the Devotional concert film. He plays very song oriented, efficient, no frills or flashyness, just serving the song. His simplistic live rendition of I Feel You will always be my favourite drumming to any song of theirs because it just SLAMS! I saw them live dozens of times after he quit the band, and their current live drummer, Christian Eigner, never had that magic touch for me. He just overplays the songs, beating the drums like they owe him money. Anyway, nice touch sneaking Mr. Wilder in there!

These cover videos are great. You should also build us a Spotify list of songs to play along with, from beginner to intermediate to pro. Amateur drummers face many barriers to practice: space, time, noise, and having musicians to play with. Rudiments are boring. Drummers need to maximize the fun/learn balance in their limited opportunities. What are the best songs in various genres to practice the key elements of good drumming?
    1. Time
    2. Feel
    3. Lockup
    4. Kit Control
    5. Keeping the 1
We can use your advice from the cover videos to practice fidelity and the sub factor. We can record ourselves and listen back to our recording to get the “feedback” in deliberate practice with feedback. And most of all, it will be fun to practice.

Interestingly, almost none of the drummers shown have the incredible power of Copeland, just watching the opening live portion shows that in spades. Part of Stewart's sound is the sheer dynamism of his playing. I was hoping to hear one of the covers use a noise gate to get Stewart's incredible snare crack...but that's a big ask. Fun video.

The moving the right hand back and forth from the ride though not playing anything on the snare, is for giving the trap muscle and shoulder cuff a break & for timing. A better question is, "why leave your arm out there if it's not playing...it just causes added tension?" Gravity isn't our friend. The continued movement actually prevents muscle fatigue.

A main reason Rush was so phenomenal live was you could expect to hear damn near note for note what you learned to love from their recordings. Some may like improvisation, but me? I paid to hear EXACTLY what I learned to love. I cringe even when someone butchers, er- "improvises" the Star Spangled Banner. Now that's not to say intentionally "versioning" a song is bad... I actually like some different versions... but that's different from improvisation.

I share you view. Once you deviate from the original, it becomes something else (and not good)
We should remember that only the best takes from I don't know how many tries made it to the record, so there's a reason why they should be played the same.
The secret sauce is to capture the mood of the piece, not just the technical aspect.
That's why classical musicians might play the same piece note for note as it was written but they also make their own footprint in it because of how they feel the soul of the written structure.
In rock songs, I think it can only go 2 ways: either you play it just as good as the original, or you simply can't capture the song's mood or technicality and you go off script, thus butchering the original.
I absolutely agree with you in regards to Rush.
One more thing. It's very interesting to see the difference between real pro drummer like Copeland, and the copycats.
On one side, you watch the total ease of playing while being submerged into the enjoyment of the sound, and on the other side you see very labored and uptight attempts to stay within rhe structure.

The two patterns are present in The Police Around the World. He also used the single finger traditional grip, which I was forced to ditch when joining marching band in high school.

    I agree fully.
I look at timing and weight as the key factors. I have a sensitive ear to that. Confidence also is a factor. Gig players have that covered generally.
Weight is the best way to judge a perfect player from a genius. Like the piano, weight is everything because ultimately, it's more the result of passion and heart over something learned mechanically.

Great video, Nate. Just as an aside, Stewart never considered himself drawing from reggae drummers, but more from middle eastern percussion rhythms, having grown up in Egypt and Lebanon. The fact that it fit so well with Sting's reggae influenced bass lines was kizmet. If you think about it, reggae grooves have a certain laid-back vibe to them, where as Stewart was never laid-back. He has a frenetic, spontaneous feel to everything he plays. He never plays it the same way once!

I must however take issue with one point which Stewart has addressed in multiple interviews. It’s not reggae which is behind the bass drum concept, but rather the Baladi rhythm which he picked up growing up in Lebanon.

Great song, Stewart is the ill nasty w/ traditional grip. Amazing drum playing by all involved. Definitely worth watching the entire vid. Excellent Analysis from 80/20 drummer, made me want to get on the kit and hit stuff..........

@@romeoalpha68 Well the difference between "is" and "was" is usually "death" (also just a word, but they all have meaning) so you had me checking whether Mr Copeland was dead. You'll be glad to hear he ain't. By the way, in this comments section, it's ALL just words, therefore it's best to use them accurately. Cheers.

@@badtelevision5482 Sure, that's why I asked him what he meant by it. And that's when he came on all adolescent boy, stamping his little foot while pleading illiteracy. He could have said, "he's not dead, but his playing is" but he didn't say that did he? He said " 'was' is just a word", but he said nothing about SC's playing, and judging by his annoyance, I think he just used the wrong word, wouldn't you say? He probably just another butt hurt drunk, shouting at strangers. Best 👍

The 80/20 Drummer To my ears Palmer’s take better captures the drive and energy of Copeland’s original. Stewart plays slightly on top of the beat to push the music forward. Fabio’s version is great, but imo a bit to heavy in its feel to truly capture the spirit of Copeland.

(imho) I always imagined/heard the drum parts to Message in a Bottle were structured around the bass one drop/4 on the floor reggae (and I liked when the bass drum sounds most like reggae in the covers) with a lot of the more syncopated latin-clave style of some reggae drummers in the hands, with a punk rock bridge.
I love the contrast from different syncopated "latinish" half-time one drops and four on the floor reggae to "fast" funk rock really sounds good. Also, I think it's the contrast, push/pull between the different syncopations/one drop/grooves/half-time/4v3 feel/backbeats/punk that makes it works - all about finding the good feel in the balance, while getting people to want to dance!
Also, I think besides the hihats, the guitar and bass "drive" the beat a lot more than in a lot of "pop" music and the drums are more for syncopation/ambience and one drop (with the exception of the bridge) for the part.
For example, the Hamburg show (ua-cam.com/video/7Hip-X7kQ9w/v-deo.html) sounds way more reggae/one drop/ Sly&Robbie to me than some others may hear the drum/bass parts. Also, it sounds like he is using delay on the hats. This is definitely what I love about the song - the reggae, the lyrics/melody, the bass line and the guitar part. Well - basically everything!
fwiw, I used to try to play the drum or guitar parts in a violin, bass, guitar/percussion trio with varying degrees of success, but it was definitely fun to play and one of my favorite tunes :)
Another Police that's great and has a unusual take on one drop is Bed's Too Big ...

Great video for even a non drummer because we all know Stewart is a rock god. I been air drumming to the police since the MTV says and the Synchronicity Tour came on tv etc. He made drumming look extremely cool. Drummers already cool but he took it up a notch. I always watch these drum covers and even as a non drummer I know every note of the way he played it. But i agree it doesnt have to be hit for hit.

Agree on Fabio and Nardone totally. Again, proficiency equal, so much depends upon playing a beautifully tuned kit and the recording environment, mix parameters. No kazoo toot here, but the big Neve of Electric Lady made an ordinary drum track sound stupendous. Just a consideration to attend below the surface.

On the recording and most live performances Stewart hits the double tom notes between snare hits on the pre-chorus. On some live versions however, Stewart does not do this. Although we all probably prefer for those tom notes to always be there .:)
