learning the piano was improvised is insane. i dont think ive ever had a song without words make me cry before.
probably why it’s so emotional….this piece was straight from the heart, raw emotion coming out onto the keys
just realized this song is about Ethel’s soul being freed from the basement, yet damaged representing the broken notes. 😭
It's about her going to Heaven
@@highconicredixes adding on to y’all, this is her soul being freed and going to heaven, the broken notes represent her doubts in religion set in her by her father, and also obviously the trauma she faced all her life.
So the Ethel paino? Isn’t ruined because of that. Her soul is damaged and her entrance to heaven is definitely emotional.
@@highconicredixesnot really since we don’t actually know if ethel cain went to heaven or not!
@@immdcx..an energy was cast outward. That is to be sure. 🙏
I just wanted to say this: I'm a middle-aged, straight, white dude raised in a very conservative, old school religion (Primitive Baptist) in Mississippi and Florida. I read the New York Times article about you today, and I listened to some of your music. I immediately sent some of your songs to my daughter (who is LGBTQ+). We both love your music. You're amazingly talented. You're reaching across demographics. I hope you find everything you're looking for.
Same. I am a conservative 26yr old, and her music just speaks to me. Can't explain it.
I've never seen her stuff, but what does any if that have too do with liking her music?
@@mrjackelbox4418 Read the NY Times article, and I think you'll understand.
@@lendondain1 alright🍻
I think this song represents Ethel’s soul going to heaven, and near the end 2:06 you can hear a harmony of what I think are angels, the broken notes representing her traumas and her self doubt about religion and her place in heaven instilled by her father.
CHILLS
I like how the song starts out sounding really normal, solemn, and calm, like the prelude before a church service, but gets distorted at the end.
From opening the service to "Save the preachin' meetin'" real quick.
i just love the fact she sought out to make these perfect wistful images and probably uploaded them herself. you're a true inspiration and really drive home the need for independent artists in the world.
She is really great
I find it really interesting how as technology improves, culture yearns for imperfection and noise in our art; essentially everyone is embracing blur, noise, damage and the old ways in their expression, like this video and the music itself as well as countless other popular artists.
It's somehow not human to have such high quality, so perhaps the perfection of AI art and increasing fidelity will only continue to push us backwards, which allows independent artists with no budget to finally break in
@@LoftyAssertionsBrian Eno: "Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them."
She gives music to the thoughts that haunted me my whole life
very that
yes
She really does
Exactly.
I just wanna give Mark a hug. Poor guy couldn't catch a break
And invincible introduced me to another amazing song
invincible peak
you gotta check Preacher's Daughter and her old work too! She's a great artist with a beautiful voice
Same here ! 👍
Just walked thru the falling snow in the dark to this song on repeat my life is changed forever
ooo that sounds amazing... On my bucket list for sure for the next time it snows
this deserves soooo much more recognition but at the same time i dont want anyone else to have it, i wanna keep it
IKR
So true, always with amazing underrated artists
same dude I just love her music so much
It's a special song for special people. I want everyone to have it, I just want them to love it and for it to mean as much to them as it does me.
I know that feel (:
No skip album fr
I have to skip the triggering one. I just have to. I listen to only occasionally when I am on my own and prepared.
"How does this work, Mark?"
Came here because of this
It was actually a pretty mature breakup, glad they treated the end of their relationship with respect and didn’t make either side the “bad guy or girl”
same bro i was like "what is that melody"
HAHAHA THIS BROUGHT ME HERE TOO!! I was like..... wait a damn minute I know this
😢
Vinyl release for Preacher's Daughter, please mother 🥺
was literally just thinking abt this, that would be amazing
I NEED
apparently its coming but will take some time
Although I always questioned the validity of religious teachings, God and "what would God want me to do" was always in the back of my head until I was 31 years old. Dumping religion; dumping their version of God was a huge step. It was freaky; weird; frightening dreams - but some people's caricature of Christianity had become ridiculous. Finally, it was a weight off my shoulders. It was also a weight off my shoulders when my dad died 25 years later. He was the one who beat the fear of god into me. "Spare the rod and spoil the child" can be a recipe for having children who hate you and are glad when you die.
The world seems so pure when it snows. The reality of some people's world is sliding around and turning all that beauty into blackened, nasty, mush and refrozen soot. For a long time I have lived where it never snows. But I love visiting the snow - it reminds me of the innocence that only exists in childhood.
The real faith in God came from true speech, but born in silence. Grace leads to grave and grace lease' (sic!) some haven to our earth.
Sometimes doubts vocate much more grace than faith.
The rod and staff are used to gently (or sometimes a little aggressively if they are in serious danger) guide the sheep to safety and comfort. I'm so sorry your father misused this text to abuse you, I hope you find peace and relief in this lifetime.
excuse my little music and literature moment here but OH MY FUCKING GOD. ethel i need you to realize what this song feels like.
its so kind and ambient at first, it's still tinted with sorrow. it feels like a smile from a friend who came by because they know you're hurting, they see your pain and still meet you with kindness, they see you and meet you where you are. it turns transcendant, listening to the crescending arpeggios feels like magic, it feels right and powerful, like laughter and the butterflies you get knowing that this moment it joyous, that for now everything else doesn't matter and for once you can just be. and then it breaks. it doesn't shatter, it cringes, twists and turns like matted hair. the music itself cringes, it knows the moment is done, and that the bittersweet goodbye has to happen again, and it's ack to square one.
this represents the point in the story so well with such emotional eloquence and it makes me wanna turn this song into my allergy medication that is a nasal spray and sniff that shit so hard it stays in my brain on loop i LOVE this it's so YUMMY
i love you for this
@@dracuIascoffin hello LGBTQ community who bonded with their English teacher
oh my god i love you
the nasal spray part is so fucking real coming from someone w allergy rhinitis
This album is the closest I've ever come to listening to something that has so many layers-like a complex multimedia artwork piece, or a book...it's so hard to describe and it's so brilliant! So piercingly beautiful!
This is always the song that makes me cry lol
I'm crying whilst listening to it as I type this
this song to me sounds “antique” not in a bad way of saying sounding old or whatnot but as if you discovered a magical little trinket or chachki you find at a thrift store that you end up cherishing for eternity. ❤
For once touched by love, everyone becomes a poet ~ The Symposium
That is … wow
I am in a phase in my life where I was attached to a person so much that thinking not talking to him would make me not breathe, I finally let go of this toxic one sided feeling and this song represents how I feel right now.
why is this becoming my favorite song on the album? like i've had this stuck in my head for an entire week now
with each note you can just feel your soul unravel
Invincible has me searching up yet another song ❤
Was seeing if anyone who saw the last episode came to search this lol
@@Jericho.LyFe-damn right! Lol.
i could not believe it when this played on Invincible
Same I thought my phone was glitching and just started playing my Spotify lol
This song describes perfectly how it feels to hug my mom. Im 21 yet im such a baby when i see her. I love you mommy 🩷
The song reminds me so much of the end of Fire Walk With Me - the Angel, Laura’s smile, the way it zooms on her face…sad, unsettling, triumphant, beautiful
definitely
I’m here again after hearing this in season 2 episode 7 of Invincible. It ACTUALLY hit me like a freight train because for almost an entire minute I was like “This is so familiar, I’ve heard this song, I’ve listened to it multiple times before, what is it?” And then I was SLAPPED in the FACE with realization. I started crying immediately 😭😭 that is definitely on the list of things I was NOT expecting. I was not emotionally prepared for that LOL. I’m confused though as to why she’s not in the credits for the episode?? She should be, unless I missed it.
She is that’s how I found the song
@@theaveragemegaguy Oh ok good!!!
Invincible has a nice playlist ong
I'm going through a lot lately, and I've fallen back on this record so many times since its release. I can't put into words how much it means to me. You have created something really special here. From the depths of my being, thank you.
12:44 AM. Currently crying at this masterpiece I love how it moves all of us
This visual is everything
ethels sweet ascension
It’s so sad that Ethel had to go this way, but I’m happy that her soul is at peace. We love you Ethel
is she not alive? I'm sorry everyone's saying this and I don't understand because she just posted 10 days ago out here?
@@Juneau04 Ethel is a character played by Hayden anhedönia! The character, Ethel Cain, is dead, but Hayden is alive and well! If you are more interested in an in depth look at her lore there are some great videos on it , but basically Ethel (the character) was murdered and cannibalized by a man named Isaiah (also a character)
Keep your head up, Mark!
Here from invincible 2x7
Very sad but beautiful song💯
i love it all, the sounds the visuals, everything is loverly
i want this to be played in my funeral
#MeToo
It's been years since I've been so touched by an artist's release. The Preacher's Daughter(as well as the Inbred EP and several demos ) is something special, lyrically, melodically, production wise and what's even rarer these days, presenting a coherent body of work in which the ideas and the concept are so perfectly transformed into musical excellence. It is STUNNING in the sense that I was left stunned by both the artistic achievement itself and the amount of sheer talent it showcases🦄🙏
I always thought this song was about an evangelist talking about her death on tv since she was the preacher’s daughter but I’m so wroooooong😭😭😭
😭😭 AMBER I TAKE IT ALL BACK 😭😭
i was about to say this has some of my favorite lyrics on the entire album but then i realized it's ambient
Thank you Invincible
Chills everytime mother

I wanna play this at my wedding and funeral....
Will there be a vinyl release?
she has said since she is an independent artist it's hard to release vinyls atm, but she wants to in the future
@@sikigenesis ah ok thanks
Side note, this comment just made me wonder how do vinyls work lol😅 like how do they get the music on the actual thing. Now i have to google this😂
I want to die to this song

if carrie white went to heaven instead
This is probably Ethel's funeral song
Sexual "assignment" is a necessary product of biology and has no functional purpose beyond the physical world. Some are born innately bequeathed with this knowledge and it makes living life difficult for them if the energy that resides and flows within conflicts with the physical body they inhabit. Have mercy and be blessed by their illuminating presence in this world.
I can’t tell of this is anti-trans or pro-trans, either way it definitely seems like an Interesting take😬

Confimed Ethel is referencing Alanis on this album.
I'm kidding but sing this verse over the intro, it works.
"Be a good boy
Try a little harder
You've got to measure up
Make me prouder"
