Fort Irwin 1989-1992, 2-person room and they packed 3 of us in them. I had less living space than a king size bed (and my twin size bed occupied that space). The BEQ/BOQ was overflowing so we also had senior enlisted and officers living in the barracks, and they had rooms to themselves which packed us in even more. The E-6s also had rooms to themselves and had no incentive to move out. Had many bad roommates. It sucked doggy doo.
That's trash and I'm sorry. At least in most places they give E6s housing CONUS and their own rooms OCONUS.
Now they can’t even get a one legged dog to enlist lol
@@greglane501 E-6s had the option to live off post and collect BAQ, there was even a trailer park where they could rent a place located inside the garrison (it was technically considered off post) but since they had their own rooms and nobody was going to yank them for "Hey you!" details they were content to stay where they were.
That almost sounds like jail, except they had five of us in a 2 person cell and you couldn't actually stand up for 20 hours per day and I had to sleep with my feet under the toilet. Yall should have MUCH better accommodation considering the amount of money that's spent on the military.
Little bit like that now, but with the shortage of personnel it gets lonely 😢

90 Ft Devens AIT. Old 'open bay' barracks with like 40 bunkbeds. Duty stations were basically like a small shared hotel room with roommate. Two beds, two lockers, and shared bathroom for the entire floor.
My air force son had a 4-plex. Nice common area and four private bedrooms. Seemed to make the most sense.
My uncle, who served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and who was a tank crew member, just laughs, and remembers that the only barracks there were then, were the open-bay barracks, no two-man dorm room style barracks. He also says that after basic training, the only places he got to sleep, was either in their tanks, other vehicles, tents, or in sleeping bags, or just on the ground. But of course, that was during the duration of the Korean War, circa 1950 - 1953.

If you become an officer, you don’t have to worry about living in the barracks at all
I've been hoping for this video! So glad you made it; answered a lot of questions I had. My only concern would be having roommates that are loud and like to party. I'm a pretty quiet person and like my room to be the same (and clean!!!).

Was at Benning 93-97. Main post 608th ord co. Had old barracks. 3 floors. Had women on my floor. By 96 the new Barracks were being built. I got a 3 man room for a year. We did not have to clean the barracks since they were being torn down. We had a huge trash container between the barracks. You would hear all night long. Beer bottles being thrown 3 floors down into it. I got the new barracks my last 9 months in. Was nice to have my own bathroom. Did not miss the mass shower down at the end of the hall.

Big difference from when I served. All you got when I was in was a room, no kitchenette, no bathroom (unless if you were an NCO) Just a room, a bunk, a desk, and a wall locker. 1977 to the 90's, Forts Meade, Carson, Sill, Rucker, Eustis, Korea, Germany. Many times you also had a roommate. Our dayroom had a TV, Pool Table, not much else
Keycards are better. Physical keys can be copied without permission.
I loved the barracks life. Had my own room and even moved into a newer one close to my ets date. But yeah it sucks cause if someone comes in a trashes the place or a cheap solider who doesn’t want to use a laundromat comes in and washes their clothes at the barracks, the cq usually makes us clean it up.
That’s why they used Medeco keys. Patents prevent the blanks and tools to be available except for certain locksmiths. That what industry uses, otherwise, why even have a key?
But yes, keycards are much better. Or NFC phone access!
I've lived on fort Carson Colorado for a couple years 👍✨ not too bad, especially the renovated units.
Ft Carson 84-87 We had 4-man rooms, individual lockers, desk. common area bathroom, washer driers. 1 unit I was attached to had 2-man rooms drawers under bed. small closets for gear & uniforms. common area bathroom, washer driers 1 floor down.
I was stationed at Fort Hood from early Oct 71 until late May 73. First assigned to a replacement detachment for a few days with III Corps then on to another replacement detachment, repo depot, with the First Cav. for about a week. Both two story wood barracks with open bays probably dating back to WW2. Then assigned to the 15th AG company. Three story cinder block barracks, eight man rooms one latrine per floor. Then late 72 the company moved down the road into brand spanking new barracks. For or five story's, I forget which now, with three man rooms so small you had to go outside to change your mind. You guys are living in palaces compared to what we had.
Ft. Campbell KY. 2 person room with common area. Community room on the 1st floor.

Hood '14-16, rooms were in L shape and no separate personal rooms
Campbell '16-19, newer barracks and the size was decently medium sized for personal rooms with bathroom and common area
Korea '19-20, forgot the camp but it was down south near Walker (not the one a few minute by bus) and the best duty station for me. Like the Campbell barracks but smaller but it was still good even though it was the older barracks
Stewart '20-21, barracks were pretty much just like the Hood barracks but had the room to myself being a Sgt.
you are blowing my mind. I was in Heilbronn Germany from 86-88, and it was a old cold war barracks. 4 to a room an common showers and bathroom at the end of the hall
Schweinfurt Germany early 90's. Same.
I remember in the early 90's, at FT Ord, CA, there was a time, when there was 4 of us in a room. We had frequent room inspections and I spent most of my off-duty time at the mall or off-post. Later, I had just 1 roommate. Much better. We also had occasional "G.I Parties", or barracks cleaning. Barracks living, had its pros and cons.
I went through basic and AIT at Fort Ord in 1971 we had a whole platoon in an open bay room. Basic up on the hill in the three story cinder block barracks, AIT down in the old WW2 two story wood barracks.
I was at Fort Bliss from 1999 to 2002. I had a pretty cool set up with a big room at the end of the building and for the most Part, I had my own room. The worst part in the beginning was all the “HEY YOU” details and treating people in Barricks differently than they do who lived in on base housing. Also, all the pointless room, inspections, and asking me about my rock band or heavy metal posters on the wall was really annoying but by 2002 things had notably started to change and we would typically only get an inspection if we had a change of command for inventory so it may be different now, but for the first two years or so, it really sucked
Fort stewart, 2019-2023 common area with stove,oven,microwave,fridge/freezer, and dryer/washer combo. Own room with closet also your own bathroom that u share with one person
Fort Stewart barracks are decent in terms of space but are covered in mold everywhere
Old school barracks cooking, drain the water out of your iron, cover the bottom with aluminum foil and make "grilled" sandwiches. Use your coffee pot to make noodles. Hide the hotplate behind the locker drawers, they usually had enough space to get it behind them.
I was a CWO at Ft. HUACHUCA we had a boq that was old WW 2 barracks. We hard 4 private rooms and a common area. Once i cw3 i got my own room in a newer boq building

I was extremely lucky and got an NCO room as a PV2, as it was the only room available when I got to my unit... hope I don't jinx it.
In my unit males and females are mixed on each floor, but of course roommates are of the same gender. In terms of rooms, there are 2 to a room with each person has there own “suite” if you wanna call in that, and a little kitchenette and a shared bathroom.
As german parents we visited our son during xmas in fort bragg. We are surprised how big fort bragg is. It’s a City itself. Entry with a daily pass was easy. The barracks do need some renovation 🤣 Jumping out of planes makes our son happy. Next step Ranger school😂.

Best part of the keys in my barracks was how you could stick your key into the lock on the inside, and stop your roommate from unlocking it while you had some "alone time" with your significant other.
I was in Warrior base in South Korea on the DMZ,6 months in a GPL We had a foot locker a cot & a 7' × 4' Area,heaters sucked, fire watch for 2 hours a night & roving guard duty too As a E2 pvt guess who got 2am-4am. I still love the Army and did two years straight years over there, I would do it again,2nd to none, Combat Engineers rule

Army 1965 ro 67. Where are the "butt cans"? Washing machines, always took laundry to town and have it done while enjoying an adult beverage. What are rooms? Even making E5 had a "room" shared by 3 others!
Fort Carson, 1982-1984. Building 2052. Had a three man room, with our own bathroom. It was ok at best.

wow barracks have cum a long way. At Al Asad in 2005, it was a big tent with a freezing a/c and a trailer with toilets and another trailer with showers.
My barracks in 1963 at Fort Leonard Wood: each platoon had its own four open style squad bays--privacy was zero. One latrine was available to everyone, no two man latrines. Dedicated kitchens??--how funny!! One coal fired furnace for the barracks. These barracks were originally thrown together for WWII.
I never was stationed in anything but WWII-era barracks when I was in the Army during the 70s. I didn't mind as I never expected the Army to be cushy. I was used to sleeping in groups from Boy Scout camp-outs and school sports and band trips anyway and the latrine and shower weren't any different from those of the boy's dressing room. When I got out of the Army and went to college, I spent four more years in dorms that weren't a whole lot different from barracks. They still had a communal latrine and shower for the entire floor but only two people to a room. Only the rich students could afford off-campus apartments.

We had 3 story WW2 buildings no cable wifi ECT didn't exist yet , but we did have 3rd floor was the punani palace . I have lived on first and second floors advantages to both . We had some really cool bbqs ECT with us single barracks people .If we had roommates that we didn't like we would see if there was a large room that 3 other friends could move into it was 4 people but we all got along had more room. One of my roommates was about to kill his old roommate had him hanging out of a second story window. Most people are okay just divide the room if you really don't get along . And start looking for another room to move into worked really well until people pcsed or etsed . Then you might get new people to live with? Usually you could find another room until you could get a cool roommate or your own .
What’s funny this video applies to all college type short term workshop housing and all universities in general. Everything is like hotels these days. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just funny,

Most likely no. I would wait on your truck at least 3 months to rack up some leave days the take some leave to go get your stuff. Or you could work with household goods or friends and family back home to get it for you provided you don’t have the keys with you

I never asked, nor had the reason to ask, if a fire breaks out in the barracks will the Army cover that or are you expected to have a renter's insurance policy? While it's minor, we've all experienced a "PVT Snuffy" that could leave a crockpot on for a week until it finally catches ablaze.
Renter's insurance, the Army won't reimburse you for anything, because the device was unauthorized, and you failed to report it.
When I was in the Army, years ago, if the work area was beyond walking distance from the barracks, transportation was provided by the unit.
What is considered walking distance?
@@nuavecmoi my experience, never more than half an hour walk. The only ones where car ownership was necessary were for those living off post, and those in dependent housing on larger posts such as Hood, Benning, Sill. In Europe unless with a family, due to good. public transportation, totally unnecessary. Looking at UA-cam posts, I get the idea Air Force lower enlisted under peer group pressure to get a car right out of tech school.

Anyone says car or bike ownership, is a necessity, to successfully complete a military enlistment, for anyone living in barracks is full of shit! These are people who can’t conceive of life without car ownership, which of course is their right. What isn’t their right is to impose this bullshit on others.
Ahhh barracks living. I miss shooting rats in the hall of the quasit hut we called a barracks at CRC in Korea. Mid-90s. Case of MGD, Red Rider BB gun, and rats = barracks fun!

I got out roughly 27 years ago so my answer may be outdated. Officers live in Bachelor Officers Quarters. The BOQ is nothing like barracks and you will have a room to yourself. You will have the option to live in town if you like and get an allowance to pay your rent.

Ft Drum 96 - 2002. It was fucking horrible. 2 men per room and the bathroom was shared by 4 men. Hard to believe as much as we spend on the military that they treated grown ass men this badly. No excuse. No wonder soldiers don't re-enlist.
That barracks is your free housing and share with 2 other roommates and also inspections I would rather pay for my own housing in civilian life I serve in the navy from 81 to 85

If you lose keys, they just rekey the lock and give you new keys. Just like in an apartment.

Depends. There are tours called an accompanied tour and unaccompanied tours. If it's an accompanied tour then you can bring your spouse and it's a 2 year tour. If it's unaccompanied then you can't and it's a 1 year tour. So it depends on what they give you.

I was stationed at McNair Kaserne in what was then West Germany in Frankfurt from 1981-1983. What you describe sounds like a 5 star hotel compared to the sh*thole I had to call home. McNair was built by French occupying forces just after World War 1. We were in 4 man rooms. The place was noisy, drafty, too cold or too hot, and the bathrooms stunk to high heaven, no matter how clean you got them. Showers were in big, open stalls with many shower heads. Finally, in 1987, they had to renovate the place because the rats outnumbered the soldiers. You guys today have it made!

Yes. That kind of thing is only restricted at Basic and AIT but at your actual unit you can have just about what ever you want in your room as long as it's legal.

I can't help noticing you raked a Platoon Seargent over the coals but didn't say much about a tragic withdrawal from Afghanistan. 13 SM gone many more disfigured for life and the psych health of the former SM who will NEVER be able to square that event. 69-71 two story open 50 man barracks. Bunk beds, foot and wall lockers, all windows permanently open 4 inches, first floor latrine. All food served in the mess hall or PX, none in barracks. The only "amenity" was one coin operated washer and dryer. By the way, all of us were drafted. Stop complaining.
