Thanks for the video. I first sprayed each bolt to be removed with penetrating oil. Before using the socket to hammer the washer off I took a pair of channel locks (any pliers with teeth should work) and held the bolt below the washer (where the raised retaining rings are) and used the T55 torx bit in a drill to spin the bolt while applying slight pressure with the pliers which ground down the raised retainer rings that hold the washer in place. It made getting the washer off easier.
Thank you so much for your instructions and parts list. I was able to add the tie downs to the front of my Tacoma bed following your video, and it was spot on perfect.
I was able to find the exact tie down rings on the internet. Used a 1” galvanized end cap to get the washers off the bolts then installed 2 of the rings on the rear bolts. Thanks for the tip.
I added 4, 2 along either edge, by drilling into the bed. This keeps them out of the way when sliding larger objects in and out of the bed. It also gives you a larger tie span for things that are 4 feet or wider.
Thanks for sharing how to do this. Can you add the link to the tie downs you used in the video? The link you provided is for a different tie down d loop that doesn’t loom as robust.
Reid - the military tie downs you used stated they had a 1/2" hole for the bolt, but they are sold out without a re-stock date. The biggest, heaviest D rings I could find on Amzn had a 13/32 hole. Could you please tell me the width tolerance of the bolt on the Tacoma bed to see if I could use one of these 13/32" D rings? Thanks. And BTW - excellent vid!
Hi I noticed your truck has a roll type bed cover. My last Tacoma truck I bought one and needed to remove my rail tie downs, I see on your truck you didn't have to remove rail tie downs. What make and model is your tacoma bed cover ... thx
Well I gave it the old college try but there was no way I could undo these bolts. I don't have an air impact wrench like you so maybe that's the problem. I did find some other areas to put these D rings by using the existing bolts on the rails of my bed cover, so all was not lost.
This is going to help me a lot because I need to haul something very heavy from Connecticut back to the Ohio Valley in my 2010 Toyota Tacoma access cab I’m going to use wooden ramps and a 12 V electric winch to load it I’m going to try and mount the winch to the front via tiedowns either chain it up to The tiedowns or come over with a solid piece of steel from one bed bolt to the other and tie that down to the bed with holes drilled in it to fix the winch to,,,, thatidk???
Mfg. Standard should have been at least 2 additional factory tie downs near the cab, under the no brainer rule? Why hasnt Toyota made this $8 improvement. Appreciate your video
I was all jazzed to do this, then realized I have a mat in my bed, and I'm not removing it. Why they didn't put tie down locations in the front like every other normal pickup, I'll never know. That's all I really need.
I was thinking you could use an air die grinder and sand/grind the ID of the washer however if your tiedown base is substantial enough you may not need the washer,,,, maybe you could go with a slightly thinner washer so you can get more threads back into the frame I suppose that’s where these bolts screw it to???? You could take a few thousand off the original washers to make them slightly thinner if you had to I guess,,,, I want to get as much thread back into the frame from those bolts that I possibly can.

Good tips for sure!

You’re welcome!

Have another source? Cant find any in stock....
Only issue for me is those new D-rings are set in place and don't rotate like the factory ones do.
Awesome video! Very much needed for my 2005 Tacoma.
Thanks. This is next on my list for my 2014 PreRunner.
You’ll love it.
Thanks for the info I will add to my Tundra, you ROCK!
No problem. They really help out big time when you have to tie down anything heavy.
Thanks Reid, ive been looking for something for my 2010. I also bought six👌
No problem man. You'll love them. I find it easier to tie things down in the bed now.
Where did you find the D rings? Not seeing such heavy duty ones, also are they half inch bolts for the d ring bolt hole?
I added 4, 2 along either edge, by drilling into the bed. This keeps them out of the way when sliding larger objects in and out of the bed. It also gives you a larger tie span for things that are 4 feet or wider.
Where do you get those military D rings?
Thanks for my Tacoma.
What is the link for the tie downs that were actually used in the video?
They are no longer sold :(
Awesome video thank you for tie downs looking for years 2009 Tacoma.
Great idea thanks!!!!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hi there! Awesome tutorial. Do you know what the mil part number was for the original d rings you used. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing how to do this. Can you add the link to the tie downs you used in the video? The link you provided is for a different tie down d loop that doesn’t loom as robust.
They quit selling the ones I used :(
I’m going crazy looking for these exact ones also. The ones that come up on the link don’t have the hole for the bolts.
Nice job
Thanks
Awesome idea. That’s a torx t55 👍
Weird they didn't do this to begin with
Right?
I thought about doing this for awhile now. My Taco is brand new so they should come right out without any issues.
They weren’t too bad as it was.
Any problems with rattling when there not in use?
You know I didn’t even think about that. I don’t notice any rattling.
@@DIYReid nice. ill have to try this
The link at Amazon is for a different d ring. I’d sure like a link for the D rings you installed. ThAnks
They discontinued them :(
Bummer but good to know. Thanks. I like that it is recessed
The D-ring in the link for Amazon is different and they look small. Did you buy original ones from Amazon or their website?
Thank you for the video
@samishegga4216 thu discontinued the ones I used.
Thanks for making this video. Doing my bed bolt in my 2020 tundra to install tie down.
You’re welcome. I love them. Use them all the time.
Cool easy idea! I very MUCH need tiedowns on my 2010 Dakota. Really like the idea of adding 4 on each side; super useful! Thx!

Wondering the same thing, a year later. Did you ever buy the 13/32" on amazon?
Does this rattle while you drive?
I don’t hear them and that’s something that would annoy me if I did.
Since you’re taking the time to undo the bolts, why not spray them down with some rust preventing WD40 fluid?
No more those tie downs are the linked website. I couldn't find the bigger screw hole tie downs now.
Eh, the link for the tie downs isn't working
Let me see if I can find a new one
Thank you so much
You’re welcome

Hey Rob, I just ordered 5 from the link above. Not sure why there are 5 and not six. Do a search for D rings when you get to the site.

Nice mod but won't those D-rings jingle more than bells on Santa's Sleigh?
You would think but I never hear them.
You have the rings, but not the sleeve that allows it to ROTATE as with the two from the factory.
These do not rotate.
Just barely touch the rings that bind the washers to a grinding wheel.
Smart

I agree. Stronger than factory tie downs.
Just what I need, but apparently no longer in stock.
Same man, disappointing
Damn. It’s been a while let me see if I can find something else.
Thank you! You just solved my problem. I just ordered them.
Clark??? Is that you?
@@DIYReid Yes it is. Don't tell anyone, Reid.
Mums the word.
Thank you so much for this. Just go my 2006 Tacoma and came with only 2 D-rings near the tailgate. Will be installing soon
I love mine
thanks, but would be better to get proper tie downs so that they can swivel vs what you have that locks the ring down and won't allow swivel.
To each their own. I use the crap out of these.
I was all jazzed to do this, then realized I have a mat in my bed, and I'm not removing it. Why they didn't put tie down locations in the front like every other normal pickup, I'll never know. That's all I really need.
I’ve seen people cut out those areas in the mat
cool video only problem i had was at the end of the video you have abuger in ur nose man clean that up to speck
Saving it for later.
Or just drill a larger hole in the existing washer.

Too much work. The bed rail system is plenty strong.
if you say so. im here because i saw how much they bend up when hauling my motorcycle
I wouldn’t trust the bed rails for a motorcycle
