Ford Cruller: "There's this youtuber called Jelloapocalypse that said some things I didn't like, so I put him in the Astralathe and made him hate Bomberman Jetters"
One thing I actually love about the "no such thing as the curse" thing... Is that by being a psychic related to Lucy, the Aquatos have a specialty in hydrokenesis. So mix that innate specialty with an intense passed down fear, and you get a subconscious use of your ability that tries to drown you. Love that Ford didn't think about the potential of that happening.
I do really like that idea, I don’t think it was executed well though. Specifically because Raz just gets over it at the end of the game. This kid is traumatized, with a subconscious fear so deeply rooted it manifests with his powers, and now that’s been amplified with memories of water actually trying to kill him and he just… realizes it’s irrational and stops being afraid? Which isn’t how that works? And it feels very jarring and frankly upsets me, since Psychonauts is a game about psychology, and in the first game it shows how very simple things like high school bullies or losing a board game can affect someone. But Raz’s very serious phobia is just kinda skipped over, like it isn’t a big deal. I think it would’ve been a lot better if they had him try going into water at the end of the game, and get somewhat close, only to get terrified and almost drowned again. That would’ve been interesting, and I would’ve loved that. Since they didn’t actually treat the trauma more seriously or focus on the implications of it, it ends up coming across as more of an excuse to me than an actual story concept the writers wanted to explore. It feels like they just wanted him to be able to conquer the curse in the end, even if it wasn’t deserved, just to wrap everything up neatly. Sorry to go on a rant, it’s just that the way they handle Raz’s curse/phobia is honestly one of the biggest issues I have with this game
@@ella_cupcakeI like to think that the fact that water IS still a barrier indicates he's not entirely over his phobia. He has a better relationship with his fear, but he still can't cross water easily and it boots you back. It may be primarily mechanical, but I like to think it's also just that he's not completely over his phobia, either.

The bees and the library both thematically relate to Cassi, but not really to each other. The library is because Cassi was a writer, mostly, but the bees are because Cassi wasn’t letting herself feel in control. Hiveswarm is described to be a self help book but one that actually works which seems more unrealistic than the psychic powers. It’s apparently supposed to teach you how to properly divide your mind and multitask, which was Cassi’s specialty as a psychic, thus her commanding bees like a queen. But Cassi couldn’t listen to her own advice after all the Maligula stuff and became a drone, literally doing the same thing day in and day out to distract herself from her problems, since everyone was either busy (Otto, Compton, the other psychonauts), mentally compromised themselves (Ford, Bob), or thought to be dead (Helmut, Lucy) So the librarian archetype, her most useful archetype for, quite literally in the mental world, compartmentalizing her thoughts and feelings became the “queen bee”, while she let her actual full self become a drone Not much connective tissue between the hive idea and the library idea, but I think there’s enough. Most of the psychonauts 1 worlds were very loosely connected. Compton’s Cookout was also like this, only tentatively connected in theming to his animal connection, but just a framing device to represent how much he judges and puts pressure on himself while projecting those thoughts on his friends.
Gotta say, it's really nice to see Jello and co. enjoying a level instead of, understandably, being grossed out by them. I definitely think the latter half of the game is where it truly starts to shine, though I still like what the first half had to offer for the most part. With that said, this was a delightful stream and I'm looking forward to the next one since Bob's level is, without a doubt, my favorite of the bunch!
I love that they got Gir's VA for the little doodle creature, it legit gives me such happy nostalgia, like meeting an old friend again. Also it's a kind of reference that doesn't sour the game for anyone who doesn't know Invader Zim.
"UH OH RAZPUTIN, I spilled my soda watching this vod! Looks like I gotta put you in the Astrolathe, so nobody can remember me fucking up like a clumsy asshole"
The funny thing about Jello wishing this was a point and click game is that it probably could've been. Tim Schafer came up with the idea for the game while working on a point and click game called Full Throttle where he wanted to have a section where the main character went on a quest inside his mind but it ended up getting scrapped, with the idea later being turned into Psychonauts. Psychonauts very well could've been a point and click adventure game with the paper cutout look that Jello loved from Paper Raz and the Clairvoyance visions but they went with a 3D platformer instead. Although I feel like In a point and click adventure game it'd be harder to make the different minds feel like large sprawling worlds. Definitely not impossible, but it definitely lends itself more to a collectathon style.

I really like how they dive into actual psychology in this game. The gross stuff doesn't really feel that out of place, your mind does think about gross things so them being there makes sense. I agree they should maybe have spaced them out better, that was a kinda awkward stacking of multiple in a row even though I wouldn't consider Helmut's level to be fully gross, following the other two it was kind of made worse. Also there was a bit less razzing of Raz these last few gameplay missions which is nice to see (maybe it's just because he hasn't been talking to the other characters though, tbh. Also I'm writing this kind of at the start of the vid so I might just eat my words soon) I do think that while making Raz passive made the mockery worse. I feel like he should have stayed a bit more aggressive at the start at least until he sees his family return because it would have made sense that he wouldn't feel like talking back to them due to them being relatives. He would be a bit more scared of talking back and after that he might feel defeated enough that his classmates' ribbing would sting a little more.
