The RC 505 Mk II has high-def converters which is a big upgrade from the old 202 (reviewed here) and 505. The new RC 500 is an excellent unit and can be desk mounted. No effects but an excellent device for pro level work. The RC 600 has the effects added with more channels and is a great unit as well.
Hi Woody! Cool video of a cool product! I must say, your “production values” have risen and it’s obvious you’ve invested a lot into your channel. More importantly though, you’ve kept the high standards of the content! Well done! Cheers!
Best review on this yet. Nice to see a real player use it and give solid, practical feedback. I wonder if the 505 is also noisy with the same crappy preamps?
I use TH-U built in software looper which has similar 2 track recording functionality. You can assign midi controllers to control it for record/play/clear etc. You can insert it anywhere as a midi effect vst. Put it on your DAW master buss, or insert it in a track. I insert it in Pluginguru Unify on master layer. And there's no noise issue being it's software.
The headphone jack mentioned from 11:25 is even more useful since you can route the count-in / metronome click to this output only. So when using headphones / in-ear monitors during a live performance , the audience can't hear the clicks.
That is cool, and actually pretty useful, if one thinks of this thing as a "sampler" the way I do. Being able to record with a metronome playing, without the click being heard in the outputs, is pretty handy
the noise you mention on the signal, seems to be a digital problem, i have tried recording (or looping) my analogue synth (Yamaha CS30) with both Boss and Roland equipment and there is always spurious noise in the background, and when i use the on board noise limiting it messes up the sound of the synth in various horrible ways. So my search for a usable 'looper' will continue.....
Interesting video. I wasn't aware of this product until I saw this. I owned an older Boss looper for a while, but never really made use of it, though I like the idea of how looping works (inspired in part by KT Tunstall, Ellie Goulding, et al). Not sure I'd invest into the whole looping thing again but this does look a lot more interesting and more useable than the pedals of yore.
Did you try connecting your keyboard to the aux in instead of instr in? The input impedance of those two are significantly different. It shouldn’t matter in this case, but who knows? 🤷♂️
iirc i did some test recordings with nothing connected to the inputs and the loops were still noisy, so lots of self noise in the ADs or the signal processing. glad to get rid of it.
I owned one for about 4 months. In that time it glitched and stopped working 3 different times. I was able to reboot it and get it working again but it was a real pain to do that. very frustrated. Finally sold it.
It seems to pick up the noise from the microphone preamp. Normally it should automatically switch the level Mic/Line. There are some reports on the internet describing the same problem. You may be able to switch off the mic input or the input effects (amp simulation?). The device is also not cheap at 340 euros. So no reason to install bad input amplifiers. If several layers are recorded, the background noise also adds up. But the problem you describe seems to be more serious. In contrast, the 505 is supposed to be completely clean.
good points, yeah i turned down the mic preamp as much as possible, but still noisy over headphones, which is why boss installed the noise gate presumably. have some other boss pedals on order to compare.
Wow, you plan to perform on the streets of Sweden in the style of Tribal Need ? His performance is based on a looper and a Juno 106. Is there a way to record in separate phrases or is this overdub only? Greetings!
the 202 is very good , i had one , but the 505 is much better for separate tracks . I have both Mark I & update mark II , excellent gear , more suited to keyboard players , beatboxers, DJs , Guitarists need pedals.
@@WoodyPianoShack I use mine to create backing tracks , the rhythms on Mark II are good & versatile, though it's always hard to find the beat you hear in your head . So i start with track 3 adding a keyboard/guitar rhythm . i generally do 8-16 bars 2or 3 chords . Then i add track 4 a keyboard complimenting rhythm , all this time built in drums keeps me in time. then on 2 is my bass , & track 1 i add drums or percussion often timbales / congas , track 5 can be a pad. or arpeggio .Or i often add a brass or sting part. This is backing for a song , sometimes I'll go to next programme & do a chorus with different chords. but most of my songs are jams on same sequence. I play live keys/ organ or el. piano & i sing , play harmonica / melodica. This method means i have lots of pre-programmes & i know where i'll find the bass or the guitar. etc. It's for me a lot looser & live than an arranger , i got rid of the Electribe , which i found too mechanical. The beauty is i can start with just 1 track & add as the song/jam develops , dropping tracks in & out. I'm in a saved programme & i can erase tracks / live or overdub them , then providing i don't write again , it reverts back to my original , when i go to next programme. Live looping is not so easy , as in front of an audience there can be a tendency to overplay., miss the beat. but with practise you can create some lovely atmospheric music. I had a pedal looper , but i was always bending down to change settings. so the desktop is more suitable. just wish they did a battery powered version.
Such a promising device that could be so useful and fun, utterly sabotaged by introduced noise :( Would be interested in alternatives. Loopy Pro on iOS is a really nice iPad solution, but obviously not as tactile as a physical dedicated device.
i think it is because many users of this device are hooking up noisy guitars, mics etc and so not so noticeable. but when you hook it up to an astrolab which has a super clean line out, then it matters. i guess i'm not the target consumer for this unit
Close mistake! I am no expert and the reason I was looking at new reviews of loopers on you tube and this one came up, seeing as this review was recent I was surprised to see it is an old model and has been around since 2016........................(copied from google AI) The Boss RC-202 Loop Station was released in April 2016. It was Boss's first second tabletop looper and was intended to be a smaller version of the Boss RC-505 Loop Station.
I own one, it's full of problems but mainly awful preset management, poor time stretching quality, and if it's not the lead clock you'll get weird distortions and garble sounds inside your loop. This and it's older brother are not the midi sync loopers you want unless you can live with all that.
Also manipulating multiple active effects with only one knob is actually not great in practice. I wish it had at least a mono XLR out though a di box solves that. I don't recall having noise issues but we use the pedal for vocals only.
yep agreed, it can be a bit tricky to use those effects in realtime, luckily nothing that i find myself needing so keep it simple. for me, midi syncing with synth arps worked like a charm. did you also notice the background noise on yours?
I also noticed a hiss when trying to play an active bass into it. The same bass in a different day didn't cause the same hiss. I don't know if it is some kind of electrical interference from the power line... Needs more testing.
@@WoodyPianoShack Actually you can nudge BPM of hardware via midi from Ableton; but there seems to be any hardware to offer this directly without the use of a computer.

thanks, they made a mk2 of the 505, but not the 202, so one can hope it has improved preamps.

good to know it is not just me. stay tuned for future videos featuring loopers that don't exhibit this issue.
@@WoodyPianoShack and i thought it might just be me! i look forward to you finding me one i can use, saving me the trouble of searching!
Can this unit be hooked up to a DAW
actually yes, which is very powerful feature it is a stereo usb audio interface so you can loop your favorite softsynths in theory.
is there a software equivalent out there oder a vst for the DAW?
no, closest you will get is the looper plugin built in to ableton live, but you don't get all the big physical buttons that are necessary to perform
2:20 - Bruce Hornsby?? Maybe?? - Nice !
Woody.. do you get the right cables to connect it to whatever or do you have to buy them seperately ?
all cables must be bought separately

2 track, so 2 separate phrases with own overdubs! must check that out, sounds inspiring indeed!
That's just the way it is with these loopers 😅
This video could not have been timed better :).
trying to figure out if that is a pun, timing your loops etc...

very much doubt it, seems a strange feature tbh

maybe i am just very sensitive to noise, but that built in noise gate was really screwing up reverb tails and slow releases!
