- Though the powers of the presidency have expanded with the growth of the nation, the process has been anything but smooth. These four presidents are benchmarks in the development of executive power (Andrew Jackson, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Richard Nixon). Three stretched the office to its constitutional limits; the fourth overstepped those limits and brought on a new era of presidential weakness.
“The American President” is a series that aired on PBS in 2000 profiling 41 U.S. chief executives, using exclusive interviews with Presidents Clinton, Bush, Ford, and Carter. Well known figures lend their voice to presidents of the past who lived before sound recordings, including: Colin Powell, Bob Dole, Walter Cronkite, Ben Bradlee, John Glenn, James Carville, Andrew Young, and the Rev. Billy Graham. Narrated by Hugh Sidey.

Looking back on history I believe that the USA began its century of greatness because TR was the US pres for the opening of the 20th century??? Right century for right usa pres. Teddy really was a piece of work. Basically did whatever he wanted.

Yes and it mostly worked, but he was too impetuous for me. While no President can be expert in all matters, but, for example among others, his silly Amazon trip that broke his health and later killed him.
Imagine today a president who'd killed, for sport, as many animals as did he?!!. Yes, it's 115 years later, but still. His renovations of the WH were done in a rush and without adequate funds leading desperate contractors to irreparably weaken the basic structure of the WH that in 1948 nearly collapsed.. I think some successful, especially in those days felt that by commanding something be done, it would be or else. However, such personal power does not change the laws of science.

Given his intense narcissism, it would appear Trump sees himself as infallible, thus catapulting himself as representing the pinnacle of presidential performance. The historical record - and clear thinking people - know better.

She made him feel as if he were the top man on the scene constantly.
She meekly agreed to play the charade and to benefit off of Ted's dad's money..
A fair tradeoff for that period of time.
TR had many advantages. He was also a very handworker, resourceful and a genius. The combination of those things made him president.
In 1899, Teddy Roosevelt wanted to be the VP candidate, but McKinley's first term VP, Garret Hobart, refused to step aside, but then Hobart died in Nov. 1899, age 55. TR and McKinley were elected to office November, 1900. McKinley was assassinated September 1901 and TR became president. McKinley’s campaign manager, Sen. Mark Hanna, wanted to challenge TR in the 1904 GOP presidential primary. Hanna died in February 1904. TR was reelected in November 1904.

I admire TR as a great historical figure but he was something of a tyrant.
Both were terrible. The former did too much with little effect and the latter did too little with much effect.
Steven is my relative 4th cousin 5x removed … I grew up with my great aunt always reminding me we are lossley related. Also archbishop James Bayley is In my ancestry.
