+iamlost2 building a hotel next to the grand canyon and a barrier to open borders are very different things. As he said in his annual message to Congress as President in 1905, "We cannot have too much immigration of the right sort and we should have none whatsoever of the wrong sort....The prime need is to keep out all immigrants who will not make good citizens. The laws now existing for the exclusion of undesirable immigrants should be strengthened, Adequate means should be adopted, enforced by sufficient penalties, to compel steamship companies engaged in the passenger business to observe in good faith the law which forbids them to encourage or solicit immigration to the United States." His views did not change over the course of his career. As early as 1888, he said in a speech in New York City, "I wish Congress would revise our laws about immigration. Paupers and assisted immigrants of all kinds should be kept out; so should every variety of Anarchists....We must soon try to prevent too many laborers coming here and underselling our own workmen in the labor market; a good round head tax on each immigrant, together with a rigid examination into his character would work well." As President, he restated these principles in his 1901 annual message to Congress, "All persons should be excluded who are below a certain standard of economic fitness to enter our industrial field as competitors with American labor. There should be proper proof of personal capacity to earn an American living and enough money to ensure a decent start under American conditions. This would stop the influx of cheap labor." He did not share the desire of liberals (and many business leaders) to import poverty and breed a new proletariat. In the same speech, he continued to urge that "we should aim to exclude absolutely not only all persons who are known to be believers in anarchist principles or members of anarchist societies; but also all persons who are of a low moral tendency or of unsavory reputation." TR thus opposed policies that would undermine living standards or support radicalism.

You can't fully appreciate Teddy Roosevelt until you've read his books. Two of which are Hunting Stories of a Ranchman and The Wilderness Hunter. Great reflection on the times and a waning era. Without those experiences, he could not have been the President that he was.
Teddy Roosevelt was one of my favorite Presidents of all time as well,Did anyone know that one of Teddy Roosevelt's best friends was one Owen Wister The great western author who wrote the great western novel the Virginian,
Through the Brazilian Wilderness gave insight into his evolution after being president. He did a lot of reflecting in that book. They can be tough to read since he wrote in Olde English and sometimes very technical. In Africa he was testing the new at the time 30-06 for the military on various dangerous game animals. His insights on hippos are rather comical 😂
Well, my grandfather, an Irish tough from New Orleans, at age 17 yrs old, accepted an invitation from Teddy to train to become a Rough Rider. Tommy accepted, Teddy thought he was 21 yrs old. Together they ventured to Cuba. Both caught Yellow fever. In later life, that virus compromised both of their lives. My grandfather’s Irish immigrant family were sharecroppers in Dublin, GA. So I am sure they had some interesting conversations. These tough characters had much MOXIE. I have it too, and live highly engaged in nature, very remotely in a forest in West Michigan. Great content and share! I carry on the engagement with nature in the Rockies. Teddy once harvested the State of CO record. I believe my namesake was part of that entourage. I venture there for each September. And yes, I have all of the Rough Rider documents. It is wasn’t for Teddy , my mother’s family would have never evolved. Interesting, Teddy must have taught my Irish tough grandfather how to court classy ladies . Tommy ended up with one of Harry Truman’s classmates, since her father, a transplant from Dublin, IR., was one of the Founding Fathers of Kansas City, MO. They all lived in Independence, MO. One room schoolhouse dynamics.....lol! So part of Teddy mentoring this Irish tough, made him a sergeant and launched him into life. Giant steps for a teenager working the docks in New Orleans and boxing in bars. Tommy and Teddy most likely connected at the Menger bar, with Tommy there to fight....he walked away with validation, training and a job.....and a superstar willing to guide his passions. Hero’s like Teddy no longer exist. 👋👍🎯⛄️😷🇺🇸🍀💉

Teddy, personally recruited the roughs and toughs out of society, to educate, train, organize and guide the first American Volunteer Army.....he called the Rough Riders. A collection of Blacks, Irish, gamblers, bounty hunters, Indians and other marginal men. They were trained at Fort Sam Houston to fight on horseback. Soon to be deployed to the tropics of Guantanamo Bay. My 17 yr old Irish grandfather was one of his leaders. Teddy thought my namesake was 21 yrs old. Teddy was the champion for and of all. He was a true conservationist. Remember too, his first supper guest at the WH, was Booker T. Washington. Professor Washington soon became his fast friend and advisor. Teddy, along with his followers, my grandfather included hunted mountain lion in northern Colorado. He literally bagged a monster. This President gave my immigrant grandfather and namesake a chance in life. He was a remains a hero to all. And yes, I have all of the paperwork. FYI....he hunted lions in Meeker, CO. I still hunt there to this day.
Roosevelt paid out of his own pocket to raise the rough riders, he was rejected for regular service in the army. This was a time that the states still excepted volunteer regiments like during the civil war.
we have two primeministers in the last 200 years who come close to roosevelt .wellington who was a great soldier but average primeminister.churchill was a cavalryman and saw a great deal of action in the khyber pass omdurman and then the boer war as a reporter.after being sacked from the cabinet in ww1 he went up in my estimation for becoming a colonel in a front line fighting regiment.of course them ww2 made him our greatest primeminister. i think like roosevelt seeing action made a difference.he has another similarity to teddy his uncle moreton frewitt was a very big rancher in wyoming part of the cheyenne club at the time of the johnson county war.
Arriving at the top of the hill, Theodore Roosevelt - Medal of Honor of the United States Congress and future North American president - "fired at the retreating Spaniards, seeing one fall and, although he was not sure if he had killed him, He boasted: 'I killed a Spaniard with my own hand like a hare. "The fact remains that 700 Spaniards had withstood the US attack of some 15,000 men on the hill of San Juan (Cuba) for 11 hours and that they lacked of the fearsome Maxim machine guns, Roosevelt arrived, moreover, when the Buffalo Soldiers - African-American military - had won the hill and there were only machine-gunned bodies, however, in Hollywood productions such as Rough Riders (1997) or Night in the Museum (2006). ), Roosevelt is described as a hero who liberates oppressed peoples and deserves a distinction.
I have to say TR was a man's man. And he deserves respect for being present for the battle at San Juan Hill. Although as stated, the actual event is far from the Hollywood depections. My biggest gripe about the affair is the photo of Roosevelt and the Rough Riders on the hill....it was cropped to cut out most of the buffalo soldiers. I'm a white southern conservative but no racist. Give credit where credit is due. The buffalo soldiers were very instrumental in winning that battle
Very good documentary! TR was certainly a man of action. Actually, you can learned a good deal about TR in the novel "A BLAZING GILDED AGE" where he comes to life.
TR was probably the best diplomat this country ever had. He understood the importance of the preservation of ego. You never put a world leader in a corner. In other words, you never put a world leader in a position in which they cannot back down. You always allow them a face-saving escape route. It takes leaders with overly inflated egos to understand this principle. I think Trump understands it also.
I have always loved this president who is definitely one-of-a-kind even before he was president and the creation of the national park system we can thanks him for. Remember that every time you go into a national park we must take care of it I know a few of us here live in National Park system He never took no for an answer
In 1899, Teddy Roosevelt wanted to be the VP candidate, but President William McKinley's first term VP, Garret Hobart, refused to step aside, but then Hobart died in Nov. 1899, age 55. TR and McKinley were elected to office November, 1900. McKinley was assassinated September 1901 and TR became president. McKinley’s campaign manager, Sen. Mark Hanna, wanted to challenge TR in the 1904 GOP presidential primary. Hanna died in February 1904. TR was reelected in November 1904.
Per his biography, TR wanted to remain governor of NY in 1900, but he was being forced out by the Tammany Hall leader (can’t recall name), he then reluctantly accepted the VP nom as he saw it as a useless position and he could better the country best as remaining governor.
Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin were two very accomplished politicians. Teddy being a staunch Republican and Franklin was a Democrat. I'm glad Teddy went after the Robber barrons and successfully busted up several huge monopolies. Standard oil being one notable. Franklin was effective helping navigate our country through the effects of the Depression. The measures Franklin took to improve the economy was phenomenal. Franklin helped in multiple ways but one that stands out was his public works programs. Creating jobs by making improvements with highway's , canals and many other building projects made a huge difference. Franklin was very effective with communication. His fireside chats using the radio to keep the public informed of his efforts and successful accomplishments were eagerly welcomed by the citizens.
Linda Dimira This is incredibly false. Roosevelt IS NOTHING like Trump. The man wanted to put in a wealth death tax, exactly like Sanders. Tell me how Trump is like Teddy, Teddy was literally a PROGRESSIVE, and Don is literally a CONSERVATIVE. The difference is in the damn name of their political ideology.
The Parallels with President Trump are unavoidable. A Leader that puts his people first and Nation first should be the minimum requirement of any person in public office.
It makes my gut sick seeing full blown leftists , socialists & modern progressives clinging to his quotes as if some saving grace to the degeneracy currently taking place in modern America & democracy .
I thank God for this man and his far seeing conservation efforts nearly every day. I cherish our public lands, forests, and natural wonders more than I can express. American fundamental ideals brought me half way to loving this country (especially when I was able to see them set next to many other nations') but the land took my heart fully. I don't hunt, but I support Roosevelt's vision of hunting. I fail to understand the moral opposition to conservative minded hunting. Animals in the wild don't die very humane deaths. They become prey, their teeth go and they starve, they freeze to death, it's terrible. A humane shot through the lung or heart is far quicker and humane.
This should say he was a Republican, and so he supported the Union. The Civil War was not a war between the North and South, as is so often misstated, but it was a war between Republican (Union) states and the Democrat states that wanted to leave the Union.

The laws now existing for the exclusion of undesirable immigrants should be strengthened, Adequate means should be adopted, enforced by sufficient penalties, to compel steamship companies engaged in the passenger business to observe in good faith the law which forbids them to encourage or solicit immigration to the United States."
His views did not change over the course of his career. As early as 1888, he said in a speech in New York City, "I wish Congress would revise our laws about immigration. Paupers and assisted immigrants of all kinds should be kept out; so should every variety of Anarchists....We must soon try to prevent too many laborers coming here and underselling our own workmen in the labor market; a good round head tax on each immigrant, together with a rigid examination into his character would work well."
As President, he restated these principles in his 1901 annual message to Congress, "All persons should be excluded who are below a certain standard of economic fitness to enter our industrial field as competitors with American labor.

Both Roosevelts are American treasures. During hard times nothing matters more than great leadership.
How do you square what Franklin Roosevelt did to Japanese Americans?
This program features Hamilton Fish III, who lived to age 102. He was one of the most significant congressman of the 20th century.
Man, that ending made me start crying hard, dude. Here was a man who understood how important it was to leave behind a world for the future. He knew America was something much larger than himself. Really wish we had that kind of person leading us now.
well said, my friend. If I was a time traveler, and ran into him - I would be embarrassed to look him in the eye, and admit that I am american, mainly bc of how we've turned out. Sad, indeed.

It's nice to here them directly, even when telling the story as it's oft been told by others. 👈😉
I just wish they'd shared more personal details and anecdotes; potential insights into the "private" life of TR.
It'd be fabulous if other important, (particularly American), people's descendants, spouses, parents, and siblings would participate in other historical and biographical documentaries.
I fear the current gotchya soundbite 24/7 breathless "Breaking 'News'" social wannabe UNculture will prevent most from being willing to risk doing so.
It's NOT SUPPOSE to BE RISKY to do a show like this; it is all too often now. 😔😩😫😩😔

According to Edmund Morris’ biography of Roosevelt, it was the assassination of James Garfield (not Lincoln) that inspired a generation of honest young men into politics.
Biographers have their own slant on things, maybe read Roosevelt's own words if you want the truth.
“Get action, be sane.”
Theodore Roosevelt
I knew next to nothing about TR. This very watchable documentary has remedied that and sparked in me an interest in learning more about him. Thank you for making it available. 🇺🇲❤️

Very moving doc. Thanks for posting. TR is man desperately needed in our modern times. Compare this Republican to the 21st century republicans. "Preservation of our natural resources." Try that out on a neocon.

Yeah, they are like the coyotes we have here in the rural south. I've lost three cats and one dog. Don't go out my door without something to protect myself with. Only reason I haven't hung one upside down in a tree is cause I haven't had a clear shot at one yet. I've been out in my small forest at night in the attempt to bag one. They are a menace and will take down a human if given the chance.
@@3360274 That is the rewilding scenario ,subsitute farmers ,rural land usage with predators and a sort of pagan worship of the predators. Over here in Scandinavia its close to a child being attacked by the wolf hybrids ,so sadly not in the vision of Roosevelt they think up here in conservation tems yet.
Theodore Roosevelt is the quintessential cowboy and hero of which young American boys dream.
we have two primeministers in the last 200 years who come close to roosevelt .wellington who was a great soldier but average primeminister.churchill was a cavalryman and saw a great deal of action in the khyber pass omdurman and then the boer war as a reporter.after being sacked from the cabinet in ww1 he went up in my estimation for becoming a colonel in a front line fighting regiment.of course them ww2 made him our greatest primeminister. i think like roosevelt seeing action made a difference.he has another similarity to teddy his uncle moreton frewitt was a very big rancher in wyoming part of the cheyenne club at the time of the johnson county war.
What a truly amazing man; I have admired T.R. for years.
God don't make men like Theodore Roosevelt anymore today in 2020
Arriving at the top of the hill, Theodore Roosevelt - Medal of Honor of the United States Congress and future North American president - "fired at the retreating Spaniards, seeing one fall and, although he was not sure if he had killed him, He boasted: 'I killed a Spaniard with my own hand like a hare.
Don't blame God, blame the culture

TR was probably the best diplomat this country ever had. He understood the importance of the preservation of ego. You never put a world leader in a corner. In other words, you never put a world leader in a position in which they cannot back down. You always allow them a face-saving escape route. It takes leaders with overly inflated egos to understand this principle. I think Trump understands it also.
I have always loved this president who is definitely one-of-a-kind even before he was president and the creation of the national park system we can thanks him for. Remember that every time you go into a national park we must take care of it I know a few of us here live in National Park system
