Great video! I started thinking about how many years I've been feeding raw....does anyone remember when there were no Wing Stop, etc. restaurants around? That's how long I've been feeding raw because way back then I could buy wings (which have a great bone to meat ratio) for .25 a pound! So I've been doing this for over 25 years & you're spot on with what you're doing! I've had several dogs over the years live to 16 & 17 years of age. I've done the BARF & Prey model & exactly what you're doing now...saw no difference in the health of my dogs from either diet...it's all about balancing over time just like the human diet. Thanks for encouraging so many people out there to give this a shot!

Thank you so much for saying that! I love that you have tried many different methods and haven't noticed any difference. It really helps me feel more confident (something I still struggle with because of everybody's very loud opinions).
I just wanted a healthier alternative for my dogs that also didn't break my bank or take more time to make than meal prepping for my own family. 😂

I like your attitude! Do what works for you! You are a realist. So many videos make it so complicated and it’s discouraging. If it gets complicated, it gets tossed out, so I have taken on the theory that no matter what I feed him will always be better than the best kibble. I have yoyo’d with raw because it is time consuming, but your videos motivated me to start up again. Thank you.

Coconuts in your yard?! I am jealous. Also, thank you for your videos and reminding me that my dogs diet doesn’t have to ALWAYS be perfect. Almost a year ago, my dog was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and I was told he probably wouldn’t be around for more than three months. I was slow cooking him human food at the time, but switched to a BARF diet and holistic treatment at the time of diagnosis vs. prescribed intensive chemo. I beat myself up nearly every time I prep his food because I am worried that I am not doing a good enough job or providing him with what he needs, but I know the raw diet has assisted in him still being with me months after such a bleak diagnosis.

Well done! I've been feeding my dogs raw for about almost 2 years now. I started because my adopted Aussie had severe digestion issues, vomiting bile after every meal. I'll give my other two dogs some veg/fruit because they like it, but the Aussie absolutely can't tolerate carbs. I try to be as balanced as possible, but sometimes I fall short so I make it up during the week. I use chicken as the base then add sardines, gizzards, liver, and occasionally some chicken paws. In the beginning, I stressed out so much thinking I had to get all these expensive exotic foods, then I realized I was being ridiculous and here we are.

Hope you see this - how/where do you source the extra proteins?

    • @Tara8oh8
      @Tara8oh8 Рік тому +1

@@rose8662 I buy the 10 lb. bags of chicken leg quarters, turkey necks, chicken paws, turkey gizzards, liver, and beef shanks at the Mexican markets. They always have sales. And I'll buy beef when it's on sale at other grocery stores, like roasts for $2.97/lb. then cut, portion and freeze. I buy canned sardines in water at Walmart, their brand (none of my dogs will eat fresh or frozen fish). Walmart also sells the chicken leg quarters for $7.80 for the 10 lb bag. Price has increased over the past year. My dogs honestly get a lot of chicken because it's the most economical but I do switch up their protein, like turkey necks, sardines, and beef for a meal. I give beef liver like 2-3 times a week.

Thank you, for breaking down how you have switched to a raw food diet for your pupper. My wife and I have been considering switching both our GSP’s from kibble to your method. I know I’m not perfect and trying to get the balance exactly right would be impossible for us the way we work. The method you break down seems simple enough that we could at least have the conversation about maintaining our puppers health. We all know kibble cereal is not good for our dogs but the raw diet is so intimidating.

Thanks for this. I've been feeding raw for almost 20yrs but have mostly bought through local raw food providers. I've rarely taken on the task because of how difficult others have made the process sound. Currently I buy 45 pounds of food per month that's trucked down from Phoenix. Not any more! After I watched your videos, I found a local source for bulk meat, ordered the same grinder and containers, and I'll be grinding my own now. We can't change people's minds when they're hell bent on a subject, but that's ok. My dogs live long and healthy lives without kibble and very few vaccines (the absolute minimum @ puppy stage and/or forced vax - I'm still learning but leaning towards none, if possible). I'm accustomed to the hate and just ignore it. Thanks again and good job.

I have done so much research on dog nutrition I am thinking of going for my PhD LOL I think you are bang on with not stressing about making our dogs meals 100% perfect 100% of the time. We don't do that for ourselves. It's already WAY WAY better than kibble. Like with our own diets, if we get a little too much of something one day, it will probably get balanced out somewhere in the next few days. people who make nasty comments to someone who is trying their very best to do the right thing for their animals should remember that old saying "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" ;0)

Your videos got me started on feeding my doberman raw food. I put a half cup of kibble in his bowl every day, but he looks at it like I just gave him a turd. I grind up chicken leg quarters from Gordons, mixed with hearts and livers from Publix. He eats one frozen marrow bone a day, one egg, and I give him cod liver oil tablets as treats. He had some dandruff when he was 10 weeks old, and two days after giving him 3 cod liver oil tablets per day as treats, his coat looks so good it doesn't even look real in pictures. Sure, it's a bit of work to grind it all up, and there are precautions to take with raw chicken prep, but he loves his food, he looks great and the health benefits of the raw diet are noticeable almost immediately. His poops turn black in a few hours, and white in 2 days. He doesn't drink tons of water like he did on kibble either. I got a good deal on a 5 series Weston grinder, which has plastic gears, but it grinds chicken bones easily, at least for now. If the gears strip out, I'll upgrade to a 12 series down the road. My dog had soft poop for one day, but now everything is working great. I have a few 40 pound bags of Diamond kibble on hand, which is what the breeder fed him for the first weeks before I picked him up - just in case there's a power outage or whatever, but he wont touch it if he has a choice between that and real food. The case of leg quarters I just bought cost $20.99 for 40lbs. The incinerated "dog cereal" costs twice as much by weight, and if given the choice, he won't touch it. Raw food is not only better in my opinion, but it's cheaper too. Everybody wins. Thanks again!

He's a very stoic boy...sits with one big front paw lying over the other...just judging everyone lol. He is not an active boy, he'd rather lay under the tree outside and feel the breeze, than play. He's never played, not even as a pup really. He's my boy though, and I love him. I've been wanting to change his diet to something healthier. I didn't know about the "raw food diet" until your video. Not everyone comes from a fortunate background. I'm from a third-world country, and fresh meat here beside processed one is so expensive. Imagine 1kg of pork can cause you 50$ in your own currency. Yet, I strive to provide the best that i can for my dog, and they still live their life happily till this day.

All the rural homesteaders in Alaska that have sled dogs feed them raw fish or other meats. I think you are right that there are a-lot of diets that humans and animals can survive on, animals are quite adaptable. Also, I have never seen a coyote or other wild dog with a garden or raising grains in the woods.

Thanks for the info!! I think anything has to be better than the over priced garbage kibble. You’re right. They lie about our food so of course they’re not honest about the pups. I lost my boy recently to DCM. The vets said it was caused from kibble, peas in the food. It was Not grain free. Maybe maybe not. But I wish I had known I was potentially poisoning my poor boy.

I have wanted to switch my dogs to a raw diet for years. Problem was anytime I researched it I would chicken out (pun intended) because I couldn't afford or wrap my mind around everything they say you need to keep it balanced. I was also afraid I wouldn't get it right and would therefore harm my dogs. So I just stuck to the best kibble I could. After watching your videos I'm seriously thinking of taking the plunge. I like the idea of a grinder because the dogs I have now are small shelties and I worry about them choking on a bone, so grinding would eliminate any possible issues with that. Also your totally right. I have been far from perfect with my own and my children's diets. As much as I love my dogs my children's health is a higher priority and yet I don't go crazy over the perfectly balanced diet for them. So the best I can has to be better than kibble. Hmm, I may need a grinder for Christmas.....

Hi. Please know that 100 years ago no one worried about how to feed their true working dogs exactly an 80-10-10 diet. They fed whatever scraps that were left over and the rest of the time they hunted for themselves. No one measured or stressed about how to feed raw. Back then dogs were not a luxury or a pampered pet. They were valued for the work they did. They were healthy and correct in their physical structure. Any dog not able to work was culled. They didn't have the luxury of maintaining any animal that didn't wasn't food or wasn't working

Beautiful dog! I’ve been doing raw for about 2 years and my dog no longer has that awful wet dog smell. I have the same grinder. Dogs are carnivores! Humans don’t need grains either! Our pets and us weren’t designed to eat as many carbs as we do. I do use the organs and bone/bone marrow in tablet form, same ones I take, I also add raw egg yolks. My cat loves raw too. I add sardines also. Were in Florida too and our 95 lb English shepherd can barley handle the heat, looking forward to fall/winter!

I don't know why people get so hung up on figures, especially for things like feeding amount. Each dog is individual and requires different amounts. Personally, I would take more weight off him. I like my dogs lean, especially having issues with hips.

I'm apart of this great FB fresh feeding group. The admins always say "feed the dog in front of you, never follow a guideline to the detriment of your dog". It's so true. I have two dogs that are the same weight, but one needs double the amount of food to maintain a healthy weight. They're all different.

Yeah, for puppies, but he’s an older guy
his body isn’t going to metabolize proteins as well as he gets up their (our lab dropped in weight at 12) and he will loose weight (staying on the same amount) and he will get lean (they may choose to feed more at this time because of this) kind of like people 😁

My GSD boy Gus was 140 lbs when he was younger and was a “slim” 125 lbs when he passed. Massive bones and he was 100% GSD. Came from a long line of xl GSD’s. We fed raw also and our dog loved it. I’m thankful that I had a vet who was okay with me feeding raw…much easier when you have acceptance. One thing I loved about feeding raw was the beautiful teeth. We never had to do anything to his teeth either and they were pearly white. Your dog is beautiful! Keep doing what you feel is best!

He couldn't believe his eyes. His entire office didn't recognize my dog after not seeing him for a month. His whole body changed from inflammation to lean muscle. My boy is now about 14-15 and even though he's showing his age, he's still healthier than when I first aquired him about 5-6 years ago. He's still very strong even though he's an old man

@@mariabennett1151 hi Maria. I'm not computer savvy so I don't have any vids but I can give you information you can find online or that can help. Thank you for asking... Raw Feeding 101...
Dr Ian Billinghurst's books on raw, he was the one who coined, BARF. You can look him up and he has already prepared meals, frozen. Also, Jason Cory's book on Raw Feeding Master Class. Please look up Karen Becker and her info on raw. Also a documentary named, Pet Fooled, information on the pet food industry, an eye opener. This documentary will tell the truth about commercial food for pets.
I feed a foundation of raw chicken including the bones, not alot of red meat, venison, wild boar, alligator, these are exotic meats so I use sparingly, turkey, pork. I go to a store that has mostly sea food ... Squid, maceral, butter fish and the like. I grind all together including some spinach,(optional), carrots, and I give him supplements. For fiber and phyto nutrients, super greens, colligen, please forgive my spelling. Joint supplements. Kefir, yogurt. I hope that helps. I try to cover all aspects of nutrition and I don't sweat the small stuff. Take as much info as you can then talor it to the needs of your pet. Sardines mixed with the supplements is good. Nutritional oils such as organic olive oil, secame seed oil, flax seed, salmon, are all good oils to add. You don't have to add all of these but there good as a compliment to raw. I've tried to list as many options for supplements. I hope this helped and not overwhelm. My boy is about sixteen and showing his age but his raw has helped him with the problems he had when I adopted him. At his age he's showing signs of his age but he's still can pull me around when we walk. God bless.

It's great for people but commercial bone broth contains onion so you can make your own by only including what veggies are good with bone and simmer or put in crock pot and cook for hours. The broth is good bone broth. Of course bones are included since you want the collegian and minerals From from the bones. Never give your pups cooked bones so discard after the broth is fully cooked. I wouldn't discard the veggies though. I'd add them to the raw as a compliment

I never got caught up in measuring out specific amounts of different types of ingredients. Makes it too difficult. And people get so caught up in it, I'm glad they have the time and desire for that but I don't. It is balance overtime, over a week or a month. Not every single meal. I do use a lot of variety, different protein sources etc. And I feed raw meaty bones and green tripe two or three times a week. I do a combination of commercial raw dog food and homemade. I've been feeding my dogs and cats raw for over 10 years. I will never go back to kibble.

2 things, switching up proteins also allows them to get different nutrients from different animals. It's pretty important to switch it up at least every couple months. And also, dogs are omnivores while cats are strictly carnivores. They do require some veggies in their diet. So I'd urge you to do a bit more research there but at the end of the day youre right, what you're doing is still wayyyyyy better than kibble 👌
