    Hi Michael Martin Murphy. I discovered you back about twenty years ago on a trip to Yellowstone. When I was in one of the stores they were playing one of your albums and I went looking for it and purchased two of the albums. I love your old fashioned country music. I love what’s forever for. My husband Inhad 42 years before cancer took him. Couples need to learn what they need to do to stay together. It’s not always 50/50. Sometimes it’s 100/0 when one of the partners has trouble. I still miss my husband even though 24 years has passed.

    I bought his album when I was a lonely 22 year old kid. Now with a wife and family, 20 years later, I remember this song and it helps get through the rough patches. thanks Michael!

    Amazing that they only practiced this backstage for a few minutes. Then came out and performed it live. Classy and talented artists.

    I love MMM’s work. Saw him at a college concert in 1975 with only a couple of hundred in attendance. What a show! Wildfire left the audience in awe.

    This afternoon while standing in line at a local store, I could not but help overhearing a conversation between a mother and her son (11?).
    Apparently, her divorce from the boys’ father became final that day. She was telling the boy the way things are set up now, things will be better; that his brother is better off with their dad because “He’s aggressive just like your dad is, they’ll get along just fine”. She continued, “You are like me, we don’t have to put up with all their sh*t anymore. - We don’t have to because our divorce is finalized today.” “Does that mean I can play and do what I want from now on?” the boy asked. “Yes, life is so much better now that we’re free!”
    I tried to hold back tears as I remembered a similar conversation us kids had with our mother back in 1963; when I was seven years old. Recalling this, I realize that was the day our family died. I never did recover, and no, we kids were not “resilient” as the adults liked to say; to clear their guilty consciences I imagine.
    It was all the self-control I could muster not to say anything to the woman. I wanted to say, “Lady you are clueless, this same thing happened to our family FIFTY-FIVE years ago, and it still hurts, I’m still haunted!”
    Perhaps, I should have said something, but I didn’t have the guts or was too overcome with sadness and anger. Anyone reading this who is seriously considering divorce, unless you or your children’s lives are endangered; DON’T!

      Kelly Dunn ... There are as many reasons for marriage break ups as there are people going through them. For me it was so that my kids wouldn't live with the knowledge that their mother killed herself. Even leaving wasn't about me, but staying would have been worse. You cannot know everything someone else has experienced, or how life brought them to the point of desperation. That conversation you heard was only the surface of the experience for them, yet you compared it to YOUR truths, your feelings. What if leaving was the ONLY way that woman could guarantee her child a chance to grow up? Or if leaving made sure she, herself, survived to be his mother til he grew up? There are no means for you to know the reality they lived with before that day... only clues such as the mention of "aggressive like your father" .
      Not all children are better off in families that "stay together for the children", in fact I'd be surprised if any of them were completely happy. Children know when their parents are faking a feeling for appearances sake, but may not understand why they're doing it. Happy parents tend to raise happy, well adjusted children far easier than unhappy ones do. My kids were 11 and almost 16 when I left, and I know it hurt them for a long time. My ex was emotionally and mentally abusive, and unfortunately my son had started the monkey see monkey do with my daughter... so when I left, so did she. I separated my children, just as the woman you listened to, but not for the same reasons... I needed my daughter to develop enough backbone to stand up for herself... and she did. Today, they live with me, both my children, but they see their father regularly, and for them, it is enough.

      1974 I was 6. I still have the scares of my moms selfishness.

    • @citrinedragon1466
      @citrinedragon1466 6 років тому

      jay strilland ... Selfishness? Is that what your six-year-old self thought? Or your adult self? Sometimes the break up of a marriage is because both parties realise they made a mistake and sometimes it's because one of them "cheated" on the other... and sometimes it happens because one is violent and the other must leave to save a life. These days, the reasons for divorce are often openly discussed with the children later... In the 70s and earlier? It was different... with some men abandoning their responsibilities, or a sick wife or child, and others deciding they want a younger, prettier wife after their first wife is coping with many children including a husband... but at no point would the children know the whole story.
      Since you're not that six-year-old child any more, I imagine you might want to understand why your parents marriage collapsed... My suggestion is to just ask them.

    • @jaystrilland7537
      @jaystrilland7537 6 років тому +1

      @@citrinedragon1466 I am 51 I have heard both sides and am confident it was my moms selfishness that led to divorce.

    • @citrinedragon1466
      @citrinedragon1466 6 років тому +2

      jay strilland ... I am sorry you had that experience, truly. Even after the fact, many parents will never tell their kids what really happened, not because one side is perpetually in the wrong, but because most people hate admitting they made a completely avoidable mistake. They know how THEY felt, but not all of it is ever expressed.
      When I left my marriage, my kids were 11 and nearly 16. I left because my ex was isolating me more and more every year to the point where I had no means of escape without his permission and no reason to keep living. I was suicidal, but still had enough understanding that if I stayed my kids would grow up knowing I committed suicide, but if I left they would still have a mother. I should have left years before I got to that point, but I persuaded myself there was nothing out there that was better. It took listening to a friend actually try killing themselves while on the phone to me to realise the impact it would have. I never told my kids about it until they were both adults and I had forgiven myself.

    Lyrics :
    I've been looking at people and how they change with the times
    And lately all I've been seeing are people
    Throwing love away and losing their minds
    Maybe it's me who's gone crazy, but I can't understand why
    All these lovers keep hurting each other,
    When good love is so hard to come by
    [Chorus]
    So what's the glory in living?
    Doesn't anybody ever stay together anymore?
    And if love never lasts forever, tell me what's Forever For?
    [Verse 2]
    And I see love hungry people tryin' their best to survive,
    When right there in their hands is a dying romance
    And they're not even trying to keep it alive
    [Chorus]
    So, what's the glory in living?
    Doesn't anybody ever stay together anymore?
    And if love never lasts forever, tell me what's Forever For?
    So, what's the glory in living?
    Doesn't anybody ever stay together anymore?
    And if love never lasts forever, tell me what's Forever For?

    That was amazing! We truly need to instill in the younger generation to forgive minor transgressions and never start major ones. I believe that many of the major ones begin because the minor ones are either overlooked or worse become major ones because there is never a sword of Damocles. For those unfamiliar this means you can't enjoy your naughty behavior because you know it may come to an end suddenly and swiftly. The sword of Damocles will kill you all. People don't hear the sermon or the parable or the fairy tale regardless of the version and don't understand or care about the consequences.
