One of my personal favorite dreadnought stories comes from Helsreach. A templar dreadnought, who i forget the name of saddly, that was deployed to the surface of Helsreach. The story itself revolves around the templars' opinion of the being sealed away in the dreadnought. The story itself ends on the templars' death, laying motionless on the battlefield of Helsreach. However, for the first time in hundreds of years, he can hear things with his own ears.
It stands as one of my all time favorite tales of dreadnoughts
Edit: the dreadnought was name Thalhaiden. Chapter 13 in the Helsreach novel.

I'd like to give a shoutout to Autolochus. He's from the Iron Snakes Chapter in the book 'Brotherhood of the Snake.' The book was published in 2007 so there are some lore inconsistencies, but I look past that as this was one of the first 40k novels that really got me into the lore. Nothing really crazy or over-the-top happens, but the book does a fantastic job portraying how the Venerable Ancients are looked at and treated by their chapters. Everyone looks up to him, including the Chapter Master, and everyone listens well when he speaks. He also has a pretty fun fight scene where he's basically just toying with some dark eldar and enjoying every moment of it. Also, special mention to Chyron of the Deathwatch who thinks he is the last remaining Lamentor. My soul needs a scene where he learns his chapter is not lost.

I think the best part about Rylanor's story is it hurt Fulgrim's pride and is still a sore spot to him to this day, because when you break it down, as I bet he has, Fulhrim was the least important person in that room, and he was powerless to do anything.
Fulgrim thinking about that situation, going over it in his head, obsessing about it, trying to come up with a way to change the outcome, trying to think of a way HE would matter, and coming up with nothing, brings me joy to think about.

One of my favorite Dreadnought characters is the Anchorite, a former Word Bearer who rejected the heretical teachings of his genefather and defected from his legion by surrendering to the Ultramarines.
At first, he had expected execution for his crimes under Lorgar's banner, but was instead left to rot in a cell, a fate which he accepted as eagerly as he would have accepted death as penance for his sins.
During this time, he turned back to worshipping the Emperor, as his genefather once did, and would go on to guide the nascent Ecchlesiarchy from within his cell upon the world of Almace.
Eventually, when the Word Bearers discovered that he indeed still lived, they attacked the planet in a bid to bring him back to their domain, where they would either try to convert him back to Chaos worship or execute him for his betrayal.
At first, the Anchorite insisted that he be killed so that the Word Bearers would give up and leave the planet, their objective denied from them. He had sworn a vow of pacifism, refusing to raise hand against anyone, not even his traitorous brothers, out of guilt for the innocent blood he had shed.
But when Cardinal Eamon, an Almacian minister who was with him, insisted that he would rather die alongside the Guardsmen and their Imperial Fists reinforcements than let the heretics even come into possession of his _carcass,_ he gained the resolve to face his estranged brothers. However, instead of fighting with physical weapons, his powerful faith manifested the divine energies of the God-Emperor himself through a forgotten word of the Colchisian language, thus banishing the Word Bearers' Daemonic forces back into the Warp and allowing the planet's defenders to finish off the remaining traitor Astartes and their mortal slave-warriors.

Personal fave obscure Dreddy is Appius, Father of Dreadnoughts. Before Sigismund was in charge of the Templar Brethren, Appius was. Not sure what happened but he got put into a Dreadnought (the wiki says Contemptor but the actual story mentions a vision slot and leg cables so almost certainly Castraferrum). He had a giant dreadnought sized shield and hammer combo. When it was decided that Sigismund had to take his place, Siggy had to fight and beat 200 of his fellow Templar Brethren to take the post (which Appius might have also had to do in the past?). Appius was the 200th and almost killed our boy Siggy, but he pulled the W by cutting Appius leg cables. No clue what happens to him (he’s not mentioned again I think) but I want a decked out Templar Brethren Dreadnought with the hammer and shield now please.

He’s one of the newer ones, but Brother Agastus of the Ultramarines is a pretty cool idea. What happens when a legendary chaplain with a penchant for smacking things is laid low in battle? You slap him in a Brutalis Pattern Dreadnought of course! He has such a strong relationship with the lieutenant in charge of the fire team, which is named after Brother Agastus rather than the LT, at the LT’s request no less, and the two seem to trade leadership back and forth whenever one or the other has more experience with a specific situation. For only having a short story written about him in a booklet in the Fireteam Agastus box set, he just stands out to me as a very interesting character.

Istvaan III is the first atrocity where Horus, Angron, Fulgrim, and Mortarion killed 1/3 of their own in a disturbing betrayal to get rid of loyalist element from their legions. The Istvaan 5 drop site massacre on the other hand is where the iron hands, salamander, and raven guard got betrayed and got caught right in the middle of both traitor armies of Horus, Fulgrim, Mortarion, Angron, and Perturabo in the front. The Legions of Konrad, Alpharius, and Lorgar on the other hand shot the 3 loyalist legion in the back when they thought they were allies when they attempted to retreat and resupply.

Before being entombed, he was the chapter master of the Salamanders during the Heresy and beasted so hard against that orc waghhh that big E had to help with Vulkan went out of his way to invent the ironclad dreadnought. The dude was at Istvaan 5 and was turning the tables against the traitors so hard that the human serfs in orbit over the coms heard Space Marines knowing genuine fear. Horus was shitting his pants over this supreme badass, then decided to orbital Lance Cassian's location, glassing a continent. After the battle, the survivors of the loyalist dug him up using just their hands. They found Cassian, who was still perfectly alive with just the limbs of his dreadnought being destroyed. The SMs who found him took him to a nearby forge world to do repairs, but right after fixing him up, the world was attacked by Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors, who got set up and were wreaking house. Cassian, now able to move, ran through the miles wide forge world monastery at them. While running through the heart of the forge world, his fury infected every servitor he passed, causing them to drop everything they were doing and follow him into battle. It's not said where he dies, but the Salamanders still have his chassis and entomb the biggest baller of the generation in it because if they don't have the coolest dude in it, the strange machine spirit who has a strangely similar personality to Cassian kills the new occupant.

    Dreadnoughts? I click.
There is a Black Templars short story revolving around a Dreadnought. He and his Battle Brothers drop onto an ice world and mess up some orks. Moving to their next target, they find an Ancient Crimsom Fists Dreadnought frozen in the ice, a last remnant of a lost battle, and a survivor of a nearly extinct Chapter.
Instant veneration from the young Templars, instant bromance between the fellow Sons of Dorn, and impending adamantine clad doom for some orks.

I read one Greyknight book that had Bjorn in it. The point of view character was a knight and he was acting as bodyguard of an inquisitior that was fighting the Space Wolves. They were sieging Fenris when the Chapter Master was away, so to parlay they brought Bjorn.
There was this junior fenrisian inquisitor (that wanted to stop the fight) that had this profound religious experience about how she knew Bjorn was real. The Grey knight that was there to protect the inquisitor from Bjorn just knelt to him. The leader inquisitor (that wanted to make the wolves comply) just had this existential crisis about not knowing how to deal with the situation, wanting to make threats but also kneeling to the demigod.

Bjorn the Fellhanded is cool. I love the idea of them waking him up, and him lumbering into tell the newest recruits stories, and they're in awe, and then he starts talking and just tells them worldly wisdom.
Also I think it'd be neat if he somehow became a regular marine again, like a homunculus takes him out of the dreadnought, and regenerates him fully with dark eldar tech, to try to use him in some plot to fuck over the space wolves. But it goes wrong, and the homunculus becomes the now regenerated Bjorn's rival. So its just ancient as dirt meth space elf Vs ancient as dirt wolf-space marine guy.

He's known as Bjorn The One-Handed after losing his arm on Prospero until in "Wolfsbane" Leman Russ learns from his skalds that Bjorn is destined for great things. Russ drags Bjorn around everywhere almost like a good luck charm and is the first one to call him "The Fell-Handed". Bjorn thinks this is an insult because he does not yet have a bionic replacement and thinks Russ is mocking the fact that he cannot even hold his bolter steady, but Russ says the skalds and their fortune telling bones told him when Bjorn rises to greatness in his future he will be known as Bjorn The Fell-Handed. There's a character they made up for the Burning of Prospero set called Geigor The Fell-Handed who makes an appearance in the various accounts of Prospero and desparately tries to council Bulveye away from following the Thousands Sons into their warp fuckery labyrinth out of which they eventually re-appear as the wulfen of the lost 13th company. There's a short story about Bjorn aboard the Hrafnkel as the Legion is preparing to disembark for battle. He does not want to be left behind and goes down into the armory to find something to replace his arm. The forgemaster basically tells him to fuck off and get in line then Bjorn spots this fancy lightning claw. A tech adept tells him it's intended for someone else, presumably Geigor, but Bjorn says fuckit and steals the lightning claw starting his path of fortold greatness. He is pissed off at Russ, but Russ told him (because of the afformentioned fortune-telling) that he knew Bjorn was destined to stay behind and keep watch over the chapter in Russ' absence. And that's what Bjorn did.

Hey Arthur, cool vid. Tbh I've only heard of Bjorn but then I don't know much about lore. I was curious on this as im currently in the middle of making my own chapter and I loosely based one named character off Bjorn and Rylan without knowing. A contemptor that was saved by my chapter to find out he the sole survivor of his chapter, he agrees to join their ranks. He slumbers in a garden area and serves as an advisor or when truely needed. When he wakes he tends to find trinkets left to him (by children) and children napping by him, the grandfather of the area as it were. He found it irritating at first but grew accustomed to it and enjoys waking to the little gifts and slumbering children. Yeah I know weird. But any who. Great stuff sorry being late to this vid by like 8 months I just stumbled upon you recently and I too find Dreadnoughts awesome.

Seeing as he's a literal spasming killing machine, there was little to do but modify his chasis in order to drink blood. Somehow.
