I also forgot to mention that, while Cain didn't even believe it was Diablo in Tristram, until it was too late other orders took it seriously, and all three heroes such as The Rogues & the Vizjerei sent heroes to investigate. So, only the last of the Horadrim, the sworn Greater evil hunters, didn't believe in their own orders philosophy, yet everyone else seemed to.

Deckard Cain is smart but that doesn't mean that he's isn't an idiot, even smart people do stupid things... the stupid don't own the monopoly on it. I agree that he's shortsighted, but I'll add that he's foolhardy and ignorantly dismissive of the schemes that surround him. Hell, he doesn't even realize that he's being used by Diablo by the time of the events of D3, someone as smart as he is supposed to be should've figured it out by that time... one would think...

IIRC what was said about Cain is that he was apathetic about the horadric text. IIRC he even said so, basically saying if it wasn't for his apathy he would've been strong enough to stop Diablo himself. No different than Leah decades later that had the same apathy as he did. Apathy isn't stupidity or any sign of being dumb. It just means that you don't put that much faith in what you are being told. You are liable to say to the ones telling you about the text you are reading too much into them just like Leah did Cain in D3.

Adria did not dump leah on Cain. She dumped her on Gillian The Barmaid, Gillian was driven mad by the events of the darkening of tristram, and when leah was roughly 7-8 cain met her by accident, where she confessed she was afraid of leah and asked him to take her. Cain Obliged. He had no way of knowing for sure she (leah) was really adria's and diablo's daughter because gillians mental state had deteriorated to the point where most of the time she wasn't fit to be among other people, she did not have a good grasp of reality. Also, he didn't know leah was to become Diablo's vessel (At the time he started training her he didn't even know for sure Adria was a follower of the demons, he only learned that after years of having been taking care of Leah, plus, Cain knew he was old, and wouldn't live much longer, he needed somebody he could mold into a successor of the horadrim so the world wasn't in danger once he died, and Leah was pretty much all he had access to. Also, Cain did not deliver the secrets of the horadrim to the burning hells through leah, Tal Rasha had been Baal's host for centuries already, and he was not able to keep his mind closed the demon, so all horadrim secrets would have been known to baal long before leah became diablo's vessel. that is assuming that when the great evils take over you they gain all your knowledge and memories, which is never stated as far as i know.

I totally agreed with you. Exemple: In Diablo 3, when we finally have the black soulstones (who have disapear long time ago), we learn the black soulstones absorb the souls of all DEAD Lords of Hell, right?. Ok that explain how Diablo, Mephisto and Baal have been trap into it after we kill each of them AND destroy there personnal soulstones (the Red, Blue and Yellow(because it's would be really stupid from Tyrael just leaving the Baal soulstones behind after destroying the Stones World)). But later in D3, after defeating Belial and Azmodan, we learn and see Leah using a spell for capturing the souls of Belial and Azmodan into the black soulstones. If no one have found the black soulstones until D3, who have used the black soulstones and casting THIS spell for capturing the souls of Diablo, Mephisto and Baal in D2 exactly?

He probably tried to raise Leah in a way that she could be a force against evil instead of an ally. Really, Leah's fall was Tyreal's fault for not taking notice how Adria was treating Leah in a fairly sadistic manner. I mean, Archangel of Justice just stands aside as abuse from a parent goes on just so he can accomplish his own selfish goal of ending the conflict by any means, even at the suffering of a young woman.

If he really wanted to, if he wasn't so ignorant to things going on around him, he could've easily learned several potent spells in his younger years, could've studied techniques used by the Horadrim and at least pass them on to someone else by the time of Diablo 1. Edit: He had no way in knowing Diablo could take over peoples mind and that the people he helped were weak willed in Tristrim. He had no way in knowing Izual manipulated the Horadrium. A scholar can't always see what is in front of him, he admits that in Diablo 2 and helps destroying the Soul Stones. That should've been where his story ends and should never had appeared in D3.
Edit 2: Diablo 3 was a poo-stain on the series stories and crushed intelligent and well-written characters into versions of themselves that are completely different and fast tracked a story that should've been slower

El'druin cannot harm any being with righteous intent, and Malthael's actions although ethically dubious could be justified. He might have been driven mad trying to understand life and death, he might've became the aspect of Death, but he was still the Archangel of Wisdom. After the defeat and imprisonment of the Prime Evil within the Black Soulstone, the only source of demonic corruption was on Sanctuary itself. The only threat to order and to the Heavens would be the return of the Nephalem, which the Diablo 3 protagonist also proved were getting far more powerful (likely the Diablo 3 protagonist was one of the Nephalem whose powers were activated by Lilith before she was banished a second time by Inarius). Rathma and Zoltun Kulle also proved that the Nephalem could easily be swayed towards evil, and couldn't be relied on.
If Malthael was successful in using the Black Soulstone to capture all demonic essence on Sanctuary, he would've ended any threat posed by the Nephalem and ensured that the High Heavens won the Eternal Conflict. His only problem was that the Soulstone would not differentiate between Nephalem and humanity that descended from Inarius and Lilith, though he viewed eradicating humanity as a negligible side effect and justified given that humanity tends to gravitate more towards their demonic nature anyway.
That is why Tyrael couldn't harm Malthael, and Tyrael's angelic soul is why Malthael didn't kill him. After Malthael's attack on the Pandominum Gate in the High Heavens however, El'druin would be able to strike him IF it was able to harm Malthael within Pandemonium (and within his 'between life and death' state). Certainly after he absorbed Diablo's soul. There, Malthael wasn't acting with righteous intent and was acting out of desperation to slow the Nephalem down.

Kinda my line of thinking. I figured that a sword may not be able to tell if someone is batshit insane. In Malthaels mind he was totally doing the correct and righteous. So his intentions were absolutely pure and righteous....in his own mind.

I know this video is super old, but honestly, I think you're being a bit hard on Cain.
To start with, although he identifies himself as the last member of the Horadric Order, he is, in fact, simply a scholar with a fascination surrounding the old stories of the Horadrim. Stories of his ancestor enthralled him as a child, and he dedicated his life to learning as much about them as he could, while not actively believing in the stories themselves. So, when things went bonkers in Tristram, even though his spider senses were tingling, he ignored them, specifically because he did not actually believe that Hell and the Evils existed.
As events in Diablo 1 progressed, Cain worked very closely with the three heroes, and over time, began to see them as his close friends (even though he charged them to identify stuff). When they returned, he, along with everybody in Tristram, was incredibly relieved, believing that Diablo and his machinations had been stopped. When Adrian started to show signs of corruption, this old man, who had only recently learned that the Evils actually even existed, believed that the prince was simply depressed, disturbed deeply and traumatized by his encounters with violent death and literal demons in literal Hell. Including the literal lord of terror itself. He was still naive to the true corruption and ingenuity of the Greater Evils, and was compassionate to his ailing friend.
Yes, Dekard Cain did suspect that Leah was the progeny of Diablo through his possession of Adrian, while also suspecting that Adria (wonder if their names being almost the same was intentional) was pretty suspicious. However, he also sensed that Leah's soul, despite her parentage, was innocent. Sure, he could have murdered a baby - that would have prevented a lot of catastrophe later on. But this isn't Warhammer 40k or Song of Ice and Fire - Diablo is a story of Good verses Evil, and Cain was on the side of Good. He hoped instead to foster Leah to the side of good, raising her as a Horadrim in the hopes that, with her inherited power and her pure soul, she would be a force of good against the forces of Evil - and she *was,* even if she ultimately failed.
Admittedly, it was foolish of him, in his final moments, not to reveal Leah's or Adria's true natures to the characters. Perhaps he was worried that, if they knew the truth, they would Destroy Leah? Although more likely, they simply would not have trusted Adria, and her plans would have been foiled.
Cain didn't die from restoring Tyrial's sword - he was dying anyway, and wanted to make sure that the former Archangel recovered not only his angelic weapon, but his memories as well. Yes, it's true, Tyrial was absolutely useless all throughout Diablo 3, but that wasn't any fault of Cain's.
    What Cain Did do:
Provided invaluable knowledge to Adrian and the other heroes in Tristram. Had he not done so, the town would have surely fallen much sooner, and Diablo would have walked the earth. This happened anyway, but Cain did everything in his power to stop it.
In Diablo 2, his services were invaluable, guiding the seven heroes to ancient artifacts, instructing them on their uses, providing essential lore so that they might confront the forces of hell. Not only was his guidance essential in defeating 5 of the 7 Evils, is also helped them save 4 different settlements from absolute destruction, and he even fallowed them into Hell itself. Luckily, for whatever reason, the hell portal took him and the party to Pandemonium Fortress instead of straight to Diablo himself, but he couldn't have known that would be the case.
After Baal was defeated and Areat destroyed, he gave Leah, an innocent, a rich and fulfilling life, despite strongly suspecting her less then savory heritage. At the same time, he diligently studied ruins, texts and artifacts all over Sanctuary in the hopes of preventing what he believed was the coming of the end of days - but he was only one man, last scholar of a dead order, and he was too late. That said, despite his experiences and all he'd done for Sanctuary in the past, no one was willing to believe his stories, or that Evil could return. Again, this was a failing of others, more then a failing of his own, as had his words been taken seriously, Sanctuary may have been ready to face Belial and Azmodan, and the resurrection of Diablo might have been avoided.

I thought the Leah story was a cool concept with a suitably dark and horrifying conclusion, but the way some of it was written in the game didnt quite meet its potential. Ironically Leah would have had a claim on the vacant throne of Khonduras, which could have been an interesting angle. It's always bothered me that her dormant uncontrollable power along with the totally insane things that happen around her & Cain (demonic cults, spirits, an invasion of the undead) make all of her talk of "uncle's crazy stories" seem somewhat absurd and out of place.
It's also pretty strange that Leah was the progeny of a witch & a man possessed by an immensely powerful demon lord and had innate magical abilities beyond her comprehension but was completely well-adjusted, kind, caring and friendly. You'd think a young woman conceived by the Dark Wanderer as a vessel for the Lord of Terror would be troubled, distant, perhaps haunted by fears, nightmares, or disturbing premonitions. Which leads to another issue: if Cain the Horadric scholar "always suspected" that Leah was in fact the daughter of Diablo, wouldn't he have thought to put some safeguards in place to prevent her from being possessed or turned towards evil! He raised her like a daughter but left her possible demonic heritage completely to chance, despite his advanced age meaning he wouldn't be around forever.
The writing in D3 was good in concept but there were many holes in the execution. Much like the aesthetic change to cartoon fantasy, it was also written like a cartoon, or a superhero comic book/movie, with grand ideas and a lot of references to the lore, but full of lazy cliches and plot holes that are glossed over.

"It's okay to kill a child" -Dark LORE Dash, 2020
Cain taking Lea in was not an idiot move. Could she become a threat, yes, could she of been a force for good, yes. Don't forget Lea never chose to become a monster. Her mother forced her to become one. Deckard saw a child who could be guided to the light and he had done so, making her a powerful force of good and someone who could follow in his footsteps... That was not an idiotic move, especially since he thought Adria was dead.

Cain was old and freil....he was a scholar not a warrior mage, I think this was made very clear. He sensed that something was wrong with Aiden after he defeated diablo, but he thought it was due to the stresses hero had undergone to physically defeat Diablo and his minions. Aiden never told Cain what he had done with the soulstone he took from Diablo, he never told Cain he imbued himself with the soulstone....as far as Cain was concerned the stone and diablo were dostroyed and banished from mortal realm. So you can't really blame Cain for inaction, he was not a warrior mage, he was an old, frail Horodrim scholar...keeper of knowledge not a fighter. But you can also blame Blizzard's lazy writing and continuation issues with the story too....

A little bit unfair, and I would definitely not agree with you. There are a couple of things I want to correct you on: first, you also said this in your video on Adria that Leah was left in Deckard Cain’s care by the witch. That is not true, Adria left Leah in Gillian’s care. Deckard Cain did not meet Leah until she was 8 and didn’t become her guardian until Gillian tried to kill the both of them by burning down her own house. Second, Cain never viewed the Horadric tales as true until King Leoric went mad, before that point, the Horadric tales were just stories. At that time, the Horadrim were nonexistent and it wasn’t until Cain met Adria and they began sharing their knowledge with each other that he began to consider himself a Horadrim. Lastly, and this isn’t a correction, but just a point I would like to make. Cain, is as you say he is, a scholar. At no point in any dialogue in the games or in other sources published about the Diablo universe are we told that he has any combat skills, or even magic skills for that matter. His is simply an advisory role, he isn’t the hero. He is more like a Merlin type character to a King Arthur.

@@DarkLOREDash True, however it could be said that Deckard was trying to make up for past mistakes; not only with his own son, Jered, but also with Prince Aidan as Cain was his mentor as a boy and Cain saw him like a son. Additionally, Cain knew that despite Leah's heritage, she had the ability to choose due to her human half, and brought her up to be a selfless person. It is also worth noting that Leah did become exactly what Deckard Cain hoped she would, a noble soul. This is commented on both by the Nephalem, who says that Leah only became the Prime Evil because they all put their trust in the wrong person, and that her fate was Adria's doing, not her won. Tyrael also writes about this in the preface of the Book of Tyrael, saying that he hopes that Leah will be remembered for who she was, not what she was turned into. I suppose the best comparison I can draw this to is the show Dexter. Despite the fact that Dexter showed that he had sociopathic tendencies, his foster father trained him to use his inclinations to become a vigilante. Which he did, hunting down vicious criminals instead of preying on innocent people.

Really. As I see it. Killing off Cain is pretty much the current atmosphere of Blizzard as of right now. Even if it wasn't known at the time. Cain was supposed to be replaced with some other person. Likely a woman. Though it never happened in D3, and we got Cain's Book.
So now with D4, maybe, hopefully, to be finished and released. Cain likely ended up being forgotten. As he was an Old White dude, and as some Blizzard person states, "Fans didn't like him anyway." Which is odd. As there is a freaking Rap Song that is pretty good and does not see Diablo getting a song of his own...or her own...or ITS own. Yeah, it sounds tight. Its own.
I only heard maybe 1 person dislike Cain, and they were a moron. Also, the death of Cain or how he died. Well, that hit me harder than like Laura's death. Really, I saw her more as an annoyance and well coming down to being that Mary Sue that got proper treatment as being a pawn for evil. So. Yeah. That is how I feel.
As for calling Cain an "Idiot," now that is harsh. As you have foresight and know the whole story and have all the pieces. Should look at it from his perspective.
He didn't know everything. He was making guesses and trying to understand the riddles of the past to predict the future. I mean, how the fuck was he supposed to know an Angel would fall from the heavens and nearly kill him? Plus maybe he did try to teleport out of the catacombs but due to the foul magics. It ended up opening a portal to some realm in Hell or summoned the skeletons that were chasing him.
Of course, now I am making assumptions. Though Cain is a lot smarter than he is depicted. After all. Cain had Wisdom. Just poorly shown on screen. I mean if ge was an "Idiot". He could have simply locked himself away and never be known to the world. Just exist on some other plane and watch the world burn. To later die of old age and the death of humanity with him.
Yet Cain still did something. By the end of the day. That matters more than some drunk who cries in his drink.

  • @XPator
    @XPator 3 роки тому

blunders in the writing aside, I think the inability for Cain to see the bigger pictures about the schemes of the Prime Evils and Diablo might only be due to his own mortal limits. Diablo did, after all, manage to pull Imperius, an angel of great status, into falling for his traps.
The common theme for all of the Diablo franchise is just how unfathomable the influence of Diablo can be, to the point where his mere existence can darken the soul of mortals, burn the High Heavens to the ground, and create dissent among angels, mortals and nephalems alike.
Yeah, Deckard Cain failed to save Humanity on many occasions, but my guess is he's only the modest survivor of the Horadrim, tired and weak from his old age and traumas, he couldn't have done any better.

They started out with Biblical concepts of angels n demons, heaven n hell etc, but eventually you can walk into hell located near downtown Walmart, or going upstairs to hang out with your angelic brothers. These places are no longer realms, and the creatures no longer spiritual. Demons n angels would just respawn after being killed anyway making you wonder what’s the point.

I dunno, YMMV but to me, the whole point was that Cain’s tragic flaw was his humanity, just like Adrian, just like the Rogue, and so many others who have fallen before the Prime Evils. I’m expecting that trend to continue with the nephalem being able to champion only by embracing the human side of their heritage (which would make Tyrael’s becoming mortal foreshadowing and not just stupidity) and thereby providing something of a redemption arc for humanity in Sanctuary.

Disregarding morals/ethics, Malthael is just in killing all demons regardless of how much angel blood they contain.

tyraels sword only harms evil doers. and trying to rid sanctuary of all traces of demons, isnt evil in the eyes of the sword.

still hoping that deckard cain comes back as the arch-angel of wisdom, I would stay for an eternity and listen if it did happen.

Perhaps watch this 19 minutes again as it explains there was literally no wisdom to be found in deckard’s brain

I thought he taught Leia so she might be able to resist her heritage. Which honestly would have been much better than turning her straight to evil.

"For some reason"....Umm....Tyrael explicitly stated his reasoning before clipping himself.

I have to remind everyone that before D1 demons had stop appear for at least thousands of years,
even Deckard still remember and told everyone about the lore is because he honor his mother in this way, not because he really belive in it
so its not fair to blame him to not take it seriously in D1

The fact that all the heros of D1 get fucked over and most of the heros of D2 get fucked over it makes sense that the heros of D3 get fucked over too.
But let's be real, Cain should be untouchable considering all he's witnessed and survived. After all he's the narrator and chronicler.
