At first I misread this as a 100% review and I was terrified for the machine you’d become, somehow managing to 100% a project like this that even The Completionist wouldn’t be able to manage :’) I at least know that your review will still be very comprehensive and with a high quality!
The only issue I have had in this game is more to do with the cool downs on character skills. Big mobs rush you and you use your skill that lasts like 6-8 seconds and than it has a cooldown for like 15-20 seconds, it really slows down combat to have such long cool downs and can at times make your character feel like a wet blanket while they wait for their skill to cooldown otherwise the game is quite fun :P
Damn, I thought that was just my poor build on my Rogue. About 60% of my combat time involves using the basic skill, and for context: my basic skill is the one that increases my resource regen. Yet I’m still always out of energy, despite only having a single active skill and the rest being on cool-downs.
Cooldowns is a ridiculous concept that MMORPGs plagued the genre with. In the best classic RPGs like wizardry or might and magic, you could just unload your OP spells as you wanted as long as you had mana reserves. Cooldowns make it more like a Simon says game and limits options.
This is something that is only true during the early game however. With my tornado druid for example I just need a little bit of initial spirit to get going, after that the tornados themselves generate enough spirit to just keep spamming them with the occasional top-up via my basic attack skill and I'm level 71 with mediocre gear, only properly starting on torment now. Same for the big cooldowns - initially, Grizzly Rage has a 50 second cooldown and 10 second uptime which sounds, and is, kinda lame. However, with a complete build in the endgame, it reaches 100% uptime. It'd be kinda weird to just start out with no cooldowns on the biggest abilities and infinite resources, removing a massive part of the progression and just generally the feeling of getting stronger.
For me, macrotransactions in a $70 game are unacceptable, even if they're just cosmetics. Additionally, these battle passes borrowed straight from free-to-play games solely to extract more money from buyers, regardless of how good the game is. It doesn't matter that they're optional; they're present, and you can't obtain them unless you pay. I miss the old days when items like these were rewards for challenging achievements or hidden, waiting to be discovered.

Great review,I just finished the campaign, enjoying the game alot but I am tired of people telling me I should follow a build guide(all poe players mostly)I want to play the game how I want to and you agree, that's one of the reasons I like this review. So keep up the good work.
@@yaldabaoth2 Well to be fair, every game should hopefully be guilty of that. I think the warning sign is when the game manipulates or leverages addictions to get you feel you need/want to pay more money for the micro-transactions. Even then I guess I'm a little more ok when its upfront and clear (gambling casinos), but I agree that micro-transactions don't bode well and make me hesitant. To Scorpio, just be double check yourself to make sure you know why you spend on micro-transactions if you ever feel the pull to do it to advance. I liked Elden Ring, Darkest Dungeon because it was enjoyable and felt like an adventure crafted and designed to challenge me and provide fun. Analogy is a DnD campaign with a DM who likes telling good tales, enjoys DMing, fair challenges, etc., that I like. VS. a DM who throws high level monsters and then says "pay me $5 and I'll give you +2 gear.". Not sure I can articulate why I prefer the first over the latter, but I do.

Probably the best review of this game! Every other review I’ve found is either rushed with no care put into it, or they want you to dislike the game right off the bat.
I love this game. It takes what I love from 2 and 3 and improves. Started in early accesss and just got the first three areas renown to 2,000. At the start of act 4 with the barbarian. Level 47.
Absolutely amazing review, I expected nothing less from Mort lol. Great breakdown of the endgame and possible problems w AB's brand/behavior. Your summary outro is the best way to explain my thoughts and concerns as well
Gosh I love your channel Mort and reference you often when discussing the UA-cam review-sphere. You're an inspiration in my own UA-cam journey. Please keep up the good work and make sure to take care of yourself.
Hah... the title of the Druid. Mortym Rabid Nightmare - NICE. Hope will be able to play it some day. Loved the previous iterations of the series and positive impression after the Beta.
I have played all 4 Diablo games and this is my favourite diablo game, and possibly my favourite game of all time. I can’t put it down. Exited for whats to come still
Only ever played Diablo 3 on Switch, and am currently enjoying D4 on Steam Deck, it is really fun to just run around with a friend and tear up some dungeons. Like you I just hope Blizzard doesn't ruin it somehow.
Perfect review , thanks for taking the time, and not letting them reap your soul! Oh and I hard a hard time listening to you for 30 seconds until you picked up those unique gloves =]
Welp, this reviiew pretty much answered all the questions I had about the game. That last point about them possibly ruining everything with p2w is really deterring. Do want, but going to wait and see. Maybe like in a year's time or so, they've shown their colors and possibly discounted the game to something reasonable. Thanks Mort.
I’ve watched a lot of reviews for D4 but most of them feel incomplete compared to yours, great content and a sub from me (not sure why I did not do it before)
I'm a big fan of your work Mort, I agree with the things you said and I just wanted to add that, the game is much more fun in Hardcore, because you appreciate it carefully and extract the most of the high price charged for the game.
A fix for the glitch where you can’t interact or skip cutscenes, if your on pc. Hit ctrl+esc then just click the game on the taskbar again. Fixes it every-time for me and a lot faster and easier than completely logging out and back in again.
Great review! Glad it ended up being a good game. I think Ill hold off until the battlepass releases and we can see what long term monetization is going to look like, and then maybe further until it goes on sale. I cant spend this much money on a single game if it then demands even more to be spend, if it is to be an enjoyable experience.
Thanks for the review. Opinions on Bliz notwithstanding, they do know how to make an effective gameplay loop. Onward to 200k. All glory to the algorithm.
I'm waiting to buy until an offline mode is made available. My preferred way is to play diablo while camping and outdoors. D3 on the switch was a great experience, and I'd like to replicate that experience on my steam deck.
For me, I playing only for the storyline m… the price is too high. I’m waiting for huge sale. Diablo 3 was also only online mode without a milking shop. Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, Torchlight 1-3, Wolcen and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing are my favorite and they have offline mode :D
Great review as always; very thorough. One of the best in the biz. I'm over here playing Wolcen instead because I don't feel like installing another game launcher, but if the acquisition goes through I look forward to playing D4 on Game Pass someday.
I'm glad I played the Server Slam...but I was already bored by the time it closed. I'll probably grab it when it's heavily discounted later on but, for now, I feel like I've seen enough to know it's not worth paying full price for. Was just a little bit repetitive and the open world is big ..but empty...mostly just a lot of walking with nothing to do on the journey. The presence of orher players added very little, if anything. NPC interactions were mostly just the one line of dialogue repeated every time you spoke to them. Dungeons all seemed procedurally generated... indistinguishable from the last one or the next one. Cutscenes were great though.
I agree with you... in that they should add an offline mode. I love the game so far but the server connection issues are pretty rough. I've been "kicked" several times while in the middle of playing. It's expected but also aggravating.
Mrs & I are having a blast duoing a Rogur/Sorc combo as casual scrubs. Actually enjoying the level scaling which seems to be favouring us, where a lot of other players are complaining about it, go figure. Love the fact that we can go anywhere on the map and not get steamrolled, so the fact that we can't go to a 'low-level' area and steamroll mobs ourselves is a small price to pay I would say. Thanks for the comprehensive, fair and entertaining review, as always Mort! ;)
As per, well, always, exceptional video- especially for such a small channel. Easily among the best like MandaloreGaming and SsethTzeentach regardless of complete varying styles- you are a channel that is desperately needed for the genres you cover (of course referring to the majority of your content that is less mainstream than Diablo 4...)
I have a personal experience with "not intrusive" microtransactions in online games through GW2. What began as a niche addition to the content, within a year or two morphed to the only place where you could get cosmetic rewards themed to the current update. Dose the current update have a red crystal theme to it because of story? Oh you can't get the crystal themed weapons by doing the dungeons, or the story or the open world. But sure as hell you can buy them from the store.
I'm having fun with it. Do not regret spending $70. One thing that really has struck me is how much I'm enjoying playing a Barbarian! I usually play casters or ranger-types in top down ARPGs. To me, the Rogue feels a little too slow, though. I don't like the cooldown on the dodge/roll. But the Barb feels FAST (for a Barb). It reminds me of my favorite melee build in one of these games ever: A Shaman/Soldier 2H specialist in Grim Dawn. Level scaling is something I'm worried about, though. I want the power fantasy. It's one thing these games are all about, IMO. I want to be able to grind a little to get overleveled. I like being able to control my "difficulty setting" by grinding or not grinding. That's another thing Grim Dawn did right: Bounded level scaling...Not just 1:1 100% of the time. MTX and how they do the expansion(s) is another thing I'm worried about. I don't want to be nickel and dimed. I want to buy one big expansion like I did for D2 and D3. I hate how the Necro in D3 is its own $20 purchase. We know we've got 2 expansions coming (Blizz said so) and we know they need to drop in at least one of the holy boys (Paladin, Monk, Crusader)...as their absence from the game right now is glaring. I'm glad (for your sanity) you don't consider the whole 100% thing with a game like this. It's OK, man. You are a machine and you don't have to 100% anything for me to pay attention to your reviews. It's icing.
Given the nature of this game, we'll let you off for not 100%ing the game to set you apart from other reviewers on the platform. Seriously though, really enjoyed the video. Solid commentary as always! My two main criticisms so far are the ultra texture pack devours vram even on higher end cards and sometimes the lower texture settings seem like the don't always fully load some textures. Also, the some spell effects can completely obscure what's going on like the necro's corpse explosion fart cloud. They could do with making them a bit less opaque in order to see better.
So far I've got a sorc to 30ish, a druid to 10 or so, and a Rogue to 15. I intended to play through with sorc first but man Rogue actually feels really fun too. I might just switch back and forth on all three at least until the story is done. I've had a lot of fun so far though, it feels like a huge game. I do want a press alt - show all interactables button, but oh well not a huge deal
Something for end of the year I think. It looks great but I've got other games as well and this one is a big time sink which isn't great with my limited playtime. Thanks for you review!
Yooo great job with the review, are you planning on doing more build videos for some of the other classes ? Keep up the good work my man, your evolution on youtube has been spectacular.
Microtransactions of all kinds killed this game for me. Imagine how it would take all the fun out of D1 and D2 if those existed back then. Blizzard's prime was 20 years ago and it's not even a phantom of its former self.

I waited a bit before buying the game, and while I'm still pretty early in, I would say your review nails it 100%. Excellent work :)
Couch coop is incredibly underrated!
So far its simply best review of D3 that i seen, thank you Morti!
Thanks for the comprehensive, fair and entertaining review, as always Mort! ;)
I just finished the campaign and thought the cutscenes in the last act were amazing. Really good stuff. Now to rest my mouse hand before BG3 starts.
Great video as always. Every single morning you make my day a bit better. Thank you. :)
It's icing.
You, skillup, and ACG are my go to. Nj
Great vid, love your mentality and loyalty to honesty. Keep it up!
Online only. Thanks for heads up. Just needed to watch 1 minute of this review.
Just a tip. If cutscene skips and interactions are hindered, you can alt tab out and back in and boom fixed though it is only for a while.
Very comprehensive review. Good job.
Grim Dawn is still better.
Damn amazin game indeed
The online only part makes me worried about what they're going to force on players a few months in.
No current plans on more, but never say never
I started playing on June 2, level 60 now and i had ZERO problems with the game, a lot of fun for me
the goat of video game reviews
Microtransactions of all kinds killed this game for me. Imagine how it would take all the fun out of D1 and D2 if those existed back then. Blizzard's prime was 20 years ago and it's not even a phantom of its former self.
