How to talk about stopping dialysis

- Dialysis care providers tend to focus just on the numbers, but trying to make the numbers perfect may be causing more harm than benefit. In this video, I give real talk about when and how to stop (or at least change) dialysis.
I say more on my website blog: www.thenephrologist.com/blog/2023/2/12/so-you-think-you-want-to-stop-dialysis
Check it out!
I.m almost 9 years on dialysis, 4 days per week… both kidneys removed, have a stomach, half liver, 5 heart attacks… coma… I am so tired… exhausted actually…. It might be time
Never give up
God bless you. I understand.
I'm so sorry.. I pray you have peace🙏❤️
Praying for you. There is more🙏🏽.
Everyone telling them to not give up, well you try living their life and have their mentality then tell me if you won’t want to do the same… what I’m trying to say is never delude people into believing life gets better if you know for a fact it won’t
Thank you, doctor - appreciation your openness.
Time stamp 8:47. Stopping dialysis ahead of time. A lot of doctors seem to focus on numbers instead of the patient. If more doctors could understand not all patients are the same I believe there could be a better understanding and the bridge of communication could be more open.
Completely agree. One size does NOT fit all.
Great video
Dialysis saved my life. I pray for everyone that cant get a transplant. Dialysis was 4 years of my life. Love u guys
My mother is 82 and had bad kidneys but never on dialysis I’m assuming her base line dialysis/ creatinine was around 2 . She got really sick had hospitalizations of over a month and starts dialysis 3 times a week for about a month . Now she came home went to 2 of her appointments and says she isn’t going anymore .
Her creatinine level is around 4.4 .
He has accute kidney injury . She thinks she will be fine and if not she says it’s her time to go .
Everything I need says she will pass in a week or so is this true ?
My boyfriend has been on dialysis for 26 years and still has the same fistula. His body has been through a lot of different changes. Are there any holistic ways to stop his advanced calcification?
such important work you are doing to inform and build trust among patients. thank you for your care, your details, and your nuance.
I am so glad I found your channel; my mom is on dialysis year 13!
Every patient has autonomy when making medical care decisions. The conversation should start with WHY start dialysis in the first place. I have made the life choice NOT to start dialysis in the first place. Complications, poorly trained staff and medical errors with no apparent accountability are valid reasons to be wary of starting in the first place.
😳 What I don't understand is why this Doctor doesn't answer any of the questions in the comments! There are many people that have CKD and they a worried and stressed out about it! Stress can cause blood pressure to rise and that's Not! good for your kidneys not to mention other physical issues!
❤❤❤MY SON ... IN JIS 40's not willing get TRANSPLANT ... is now on dialysis.... WHERE❤IS YOUR PRACTICE ? WE'RE IN ILLINOIS
What is it about transplant that makes him unwilling?
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼HE WAS ATTACKED AND BEATEN INTO A COMA ... 2012 ... HAS SOME PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE ... SO HE DOESN'T THINK TOTALLY NORMAL
Thanks so much! Slowly getting better at this. 😊
You are doing great! We would love to see more of you.
Hello, l am a 67 year old man , told l have stage 5kidney failure. What type of treatment should I get. Have a very active lifestyle.
I just hit stage 5. I'm out. No thank you!
Thank you for sharing this valuable information 👍.
What about if your 40s and you do hemodialysis at home and makes you so sick afterwards? Kidney function 15-18% still urinating like a regular person. Is wise to get off and monitor it without doing dyialsis until you get your transplant?
Pl discuss about homeopathy medicine for kidney disease, lot I heard about homeopathy in kidney treatments
Did you have a specific homeopathic treatment in mind? In general, I think these herbal supplement companies are selling false hope and empty promises and sometimes cause harm.
Thank you for posting again Dr. Vanessa. I fully understand the pitfalls of giving medical advice without having access to a patient's full history; but I need to know (for research purposes only) what was the solution for the man with incessant itching? I suffer from this and it is maddening, phosphorus is controlled, I use benadryl and slather myself in hydrocortisone, my dialyzer is flushed, I only use gentle cleansers on my skin and clothes but nothing works.
Gabapentin in very small doses in patients on dialysis. It’s often given to people with diabetic neuropathy up to 900mg 3x a day, but I once had a dialysis patient who slept some 18 hours with 100mg pill (smallest pill size) 😮 so I had to order the liquid form!
Thank you for your response Dr. Vanessa you are a gem! Your answer is a bit funny to me personally as I was prescribed gabapentin for neuropathy in my feet and ankles. I read the insert (you know the one written in microscopic text folded and stuck on the top of the bottle) and decided against taking it due to the side effects. Well my search continues. Thank you again.
@@mikerossgup You’re welcome, but keep in mind every medication has a long list of side effects, that the vast majority of folks never get. For gabapentin, the most common are sleepiness and nausea, which is why we have people start it at night. I encourage patients to be open to seeing if the benefits outweigh the downside.
Wow, YOU are beautiful!@@realkidneytalk
@@realkidneytalk can gabapentin damage kidney further? Mum age 85 years old in ckd 5, after she took this medicine, she tend to sleep alot.. 2 days not wanting to get up.. Scary.. Besides side effect.. Will It damage the kidney further?
So sorry Mike. It is very emotional leaving something that you cherish. Take Care.
Insatiable itching?? That's me!! What can you recommend to calm it, especially all night??
Planned to respond in the video I just posted but it was getting too long! Depends on the cause...just dry skin, phosphorus. For the patient I mentioned in the video gabapentin worked beautifully. But WARNING: Sometimes 100mg can be dangerous for folks with end-stage kidney disease. Please discuss with your doctor.
@@tomgreaney1 you don’t know what you’re talking about. I delete ignorant comments.
Thank you for your commonsense approach to kidney failure.
I do like the new logo.. Yasss Dr Vanessa I see you branding! 🙌🏾🙏🏿🙌🏾🙌🏾
I have sickle cell trait I have a low hemoglobin and I get blood transfusion and I have ckd can I survive from doing dialysis.🎉
Sickle cell trait alone usually doesn't cause problems. Could something else be causing your severe anemia? Everybody on dialysis has low hemoglobin. It's end-stage kidney disease that kills people; rarely does anyone die directly because of dialysis.
God bless all who don't know when to say "this is enough "
You are a great women
