I think the black and white helped a lot there. The hardest part of realistic CGI is realistic lighting and colour matching so having to only deal with lighting was the best problem they could’ve had.

My favorite film of the year, I’d call it a psychological drama with horror elements and lighthearted moments. There were so many beautiful allusions and interpretative homages, and the Promethean imagery stunned me

I'd have to say one of my favorite things about this film is how it looks just so old school that if you did not know any better you'd almost swear The Lighthouse had been filmed back in the mid to late 1940s or early 50s.
I love the setting of this film. Wish it was used more in movies... nautical settings lend themselves so well to great cinematography and that time periods look is so classy. Still processing what the hell happened in this movie though... in a good way...

The internet spending so much time discussing a black-n-white film with only 2 characters. You'd think people will dismiss this compared to last 20-30 year's standards, but The Lighthouse has sparked so much discussion and interpretation. It's just a testament to how good a job the whole team has made. That includes you, Mr. Cosmonaut (Hour?), for acknowledging it.

A flat character arc was proven fine quite a long time ago...a flat arc is about how the world changes around the character because of their personality/choices/etc
This film is such a trip. I've watched it over the course of a little more than a month cause it was just freaking me out, but in a good way. I've watched several scenes several times over just to grasp what I'm being shown and honestly I can't even tell you the meaning behind most of what's going on without doing more research but that's the kind of thought provoking movie making I want to see. It was a great watch and the performances are epic.
No spoilers. The movie is based on the greek myths proteus and prometheus. It's about stealing fire/knowledge from the Gods and not being able to understand everything all at once. This led to consequence in the mythos. A lot of symbology in a modern take on greek mythology that grounds itself in human behavior. It makes more sense under this context once you know where the writers were pulling influences from. I would say willem dafoe's character took on the trickster archetype and patttinson was his target for mind play. Great movie, but felt like an acid trip devoid of all color because of the obvious choice to go old school black and white lense. A must see, but go in expecting to be confused by weird imagery.
Could very possibly become one of my favorites. They also shot on 100 year old lenses or something like that. Saw it two days in a row, both of the times driving through deep snow and ice. The theater attendant recognized my hat and said, “again?!”
I won’t lie, I really didn’t enjoy the movie at all, even though I studied film and I usually LOVE weird, stressful avant garde art films, but I think it is to this movie’s credit that I can still see WHY people like it even though I don’t. (Dafoe and Pattinson were insanely good also).
A D I loved it but I do think it should have ended a bit earlier with a children of the flies ending confronting society by the way of the tender showing up while Dafoe was on a leash. But maybe I’m wrong

I would say that every frame a painting applies to this film. It is that perfectly acted, shot, lit, written, etc.
This has quickly become my most anticipated movie of the year, and I first heard about it in June.
You should really check out the Korean film, Parasite. I adored the Lighthouse but I think Parasite is the best film this year.
