Actually there's a really deep lore to Hollow Knight, but it's not directly told. I guess it's just that you really need to be invested in it to get it.
It is deep if you disregard the obvious real life examples regarding bugs. A bright light is driving them mad, the abyss is basically a nest with a huge offspring. Some bugs mate like crazy, others remain devoted for life, etc.. They took a lot of simple biologic examples and made a really good story with it. But, if you start to notice these examples (like me), the lore can become a little funny instead of deep and gloomy. I was super invested into the abyss, "this is metaphor for depression", etc, etc.. then, I noticed it is actually a nest, lol
@@RRRRRRRRR33while it does take a lot of examples from irl bug lives the lore itself still exists Abyss can still be a metaphor of death or whatnot, while it has taken inspiration from irl nests
R isn’t the abyss the grave of the pale King’s children who couldn’t become a pure vessel? I know this is a half a year ago but I really like this game and wanted to talk about the lore
You were actually pretty close with the story you figured out. The Radiance can escape through thoughts and dreams, so the Pale King created vessels from the void, a being that wouldn't have thoughts, a hollow knight (hence the name). The hollow knight that was made (the one in the temple) became corrupted when the king grew attached to him, which made him start having thoughts, making him imperfect, so the radiance eventually seeped out. The knight you play as, however, is a perfectly hollow vessel, so they go to kill the current knight and takes their place.
See, I never really understood that. If our Knight is totally bereft of thought, why does it do favors for people or save the grubs? How does it have the cognitive capacity to fight or barter? How does it draw up maps? A mindless, thoughtless, soulless, unfeeling vessel would be a mannequin in the literal sense.
sixstringpsycho it’s doing stuff for people cause it knows by doing their favors or drawing maps, etc. it will only bring him closer to his goal, he doesn’t do it out of the sense of pity or kindness, he does it because he has a mission and if that means using people to complete his mission faster, then he will do it

This game's lore. Oh man. It's minimalistic in-game because if they tried exposition, it would literally extend your gameplay from 26 hours to 26. There are so, so many things that you can learn, not by text or by obvious correlation but visual parallels and callbacks. And so subtle, too. And _all_ the lore hints are present from the very start of the game! Before you even reach Dirtmouth, you can actually find out that the smol knight was born in Hallownest, lost its memory and regained it just by stepping foot into the King's Pass and coming across the tablets from the Pale King! The fact that you are a higher being, that you have no soul and any soul you have is from others, that you are related to the Pale King and emit a pale light like he did, the fact that the Pale King popularized soul vessels but hid the existence of the masks, that moths were powerful species, the fact that the Pale King knew he was fighting a losing battle against the Radiance from the very start and hence left it up to his children, how he tasked his five knights to protect the city from the outside so no one could enter, how the King and the moth tribe in their separate ways tried to give vessels the chance to prove their strength - and how the all the vessels, including the Hollow Knight and our smol knight - aren't truly hollow. The game really makes you think about who's really evil - if there really is any creature which is truly evil. (No wait, I take that back. The primal aspids are truly evil. They were evil both before and after the infection, and nothing can change my mind on that lol).
I was watching your Symphony of the Night video, that you ended asking for a metroivania, I thought about Hollow Knight, then went back to the UA-cam home page, and HERE WE GO. Talk about timing.
I mean... this sure beats Super Metroid's story, which is mostly setup and some environmental stuff. But the sense of exploration is one I've rarely seen, even in some other recent Metroidvanias. Heck, all you get in Symphony of the Night when you find a secret area is some potion or worthless equipment most of the time and the best things you can get are sometimes frustratingly low% enemy drops.
Potions in SOTN are basically the key hunt in Metroid Prime, you need them to facetank the final boss... (unless you get the Crissaegrim somehow.) In Hollow Knight there are some dead ends with lore tablets that you can't even read without a special charm, etc. There are some really cool secrets in this game, though.
@@zibasav9440 If you still don't know much about it, Johnny did review it when it came out. But it stands for Another Metroid 2 Remake, and if you compare it to the real Nintendo-made Metroid 2 Remake, it's even better imo. (It actually came out before the official one; the Another is referring to the fan creator's previous failed Metroid 2 remake, not the real one.)
I played this game for 99 hours, 34 minutes and I only have 106%.That is not a testimony to how hard this game is but to how bad I am at playing video games.
9:10 The answer to that can be found in the Hollow Knight book. (why yes I am a nerd) "Applying and removing charms is a bit of a tricky process, one that is best done while at rest."
Johnny, you didnt mentioned that for charms, certain combination changes their effect as well. For example, the simple Mark of Pride, while it boost your range , it also stacks with Longnail But if you have equipped Grubberfly's Elegy, it increases the projectile from that charm. There are other interactions, i just pick the more boring one.
Another example: The Glowing womb lets you spawn little fly minions that bash into enemies, but if you combine it with the Defender's Crest, the fly minions explode when they come in contact with an enemy.
and to think that they removed an area because it was to big and they thought people wouldn't be able to handle how massive it was. i guess they were right going by your experience. but apparently it was the biggest are by far. the forest of bones is what it was called. though it seems its gonna be in the sequel to hollow knight. hollow knight: silksong. though im not sure how much it would have changed since its intended inclusion in hollow knight.
Well... If you're ever looking for more Metroidvania, there's always Rabi-Ribi (a fairly cutesy anime styled Metroidvania where bosses tend to have bullet hell elements and later on get pretty difficult (one of the bosses in the post-game even gets tougher if you have a high item percentage, since they use the items you have against you)). Sure it's a bit on the generic side story-wise (anime girl tries to rescue another anime girl with the power of friendship) / power-up wise (Bombs to break open passageways, double jump, dash, etc) but it's still a pretty fun Metroidvania from what I played of it (I didn't complete the whole thing but beat the "final" boss and got into a post-game labyrinth that could be compared to the Chaos areas from Aria of Sorrow).
It's my favorite metroidvania of all time, mostly of great music and being the most open metroidvania I've ever played. It also has FANTASTIC music, great and numerous bosses and I enjoyed the story (not Shakespeare, but I like characters and it sometimes could hit the feels). There are also sooo many NG+ options. Even 0% runs are possible. I'd really love to see Johnny reviewing this game, my 3rd favorite game of all time.
That's not a very good suggestion. Rabi-Ribi is not a good game. It's masochistic for being masochistic. It has an incoherent pixel art when characters and backgrounds and shit don't mesh with each other. It doesn't even have a nice story. And overall, if you want a good metroidvania with bunny girls, just play Bunny Must Die! Chelsea and the 7 Devils, that's a hard, but a really good game with 2 distinctively different campaigns due to having to completely different characters.
Have yet to play this one, but as someone that's growing increasingly jaded with the pixel art approach a lot of indies seem to default to these days, I am loving this game's art and animation.
Jesus. Literally yesterday I started playing this game and said "Damn I hope Johnny reviews it soon I like it" and sure enough I wake up this morning!!! I'm psychic!!!
Your description of the game's lore was surprisingly accurate. It could be nick-picked out, but it's one of the best short descriptions of this game's lore I've heard so far.
I saw it, and everyone everywhere kept telling me it was the second coming of Jesus Christ "No game that good can ever exist and be sold for so cheap" But this one, it is You won't regret it
Honestly, I'm not the most og fan - joined at around 2012 - but Somecallmejohnny has consistently been the best channel on UA-cam. While you might not have millions of subs, you still are favourite and I always highly anticipate every new episode. Plz never stop
Really nice video - and a good choice of game to review. I personally love the minimalist storytelling nature of the game - it lets you fill in a lot of what's going on in your own way, kinda like Cave Story and its own silent protagonist. It is also, definitely, an *enormous* game, and getting lost in it is half the fun of playing it.
This game definitely looks nice, but based on the sheer size, I don't know if I'd ever be able to get through it. On a different note, I love that shirt.
This is my first Metroidvania game that I’ve played in a long time. Must say, it’s quite nice playing game genre that I’m not familiar with, and I love the game’s art style. It was a bit overwhelming exploring everything, but it was great, and the boss fights are the spectacles. The game is definitely difficult, but the style and gameplay is nice. I especially love the grub and the stag, they’re nice NPCs.
overall loved every hour of the game while playing through it, it is a game truly rich in exploration and lore, the music is beutiful, and the gameplay a satisfying challenge with a learning curve to boot. i would agree that the game falls a bit flat with the characterization, sure you like (or like to hate) interacting with the various characters that populate the desolate ruins of hallownest, but alot of them dont really seem to have much of a reason to be there other than for the sake of a stupid gag, to give you a quest, or to sell you something. for instance, the game never really gave me a reason to actually CARE about them, and maybe that's to do with most interaction being one way listening due to silent protagonist syndrome, but their should have been more emotional angst, show how they would realistically cope with living in a hollowed out husk of a dead kingdom, and have them express more aspects to their personality than what they first let on, more about their own history, their family, freinds, gossip, anything beyond vague quips and one liners. But instead of actual character development, we instead have characters that act completely oblivious or counter to that fact and it just decimates the compelling pathos the dark themes would have otherwise suggested in exchange for cheap bathos and dark humor, and from what i have seen from silksong trailer, this approach will most likely continue. TLDR: just because its in a animated style, does not mean it cant be serious!! Don Bluth can attest to this.
The shriek and ground pound are by far the best abilities because they have multi-hit, grant I frames and deal way more damage than the vengeful spirit and it's ilk.
You ever cross over into 3 lanes of traffic and nearly die because of a UA-cam notification? Just kidding but it always makes my day whenever Johnny uploads a video
Damn dude, you're a badass. I have no patience for the super difficult bosses or extra areas. I don't have the skills and it was endlessly frustrating. I don't have as much time for games as I would like so, had to cut this one short just after finishing the "last" boss. Still an amazingly fun and haunting experience that I just supwr enjoyed. The world is so vibrant and creepy. It was great!
Oh c'mon Johnny!! The storystelling for this game is really sweet and the lore is gorgeous! It's not a happy story by any means but it's damn marvelous. Great video as always tho. :)
It seems johnny isn't a guy for description lore and lore you have to put together yaself, after seeing this and the dark souls video, also the "magic" and "mana" are actually called soul, which is an energy source that isn't truly specified, its part of the lore so calling it mana, magic, and fireball really triggered me.
Great to see Johnny back on, what I hope is and will continue to be, a regular schedule releasing the Johnny vs videos. Also loving the new theme. I know it's just a variation on the previous one but I like this one a lot better.
@Gamerluna I love Hollow Knight, but I love Dark Souls 1 even more. It's just more impressive how they could make such an interconnected world in 3D. Hollow Knight has a really original artstyle and simple gameplay that you never see in other Metroidvanias, even though it works so well. Well actually, they're tied in my books.
I just finished this game a few days ago!(81%, didn't get the true ending, but I don't plan to play more of it anytime soon). I beat nightmare king Grimm and that was awesome! But now it feels tedious to search for ghosts warriors and dream essences so I can unlock the final ending and enter the white palace. So i'm not going to force myself to do it, Still really liked the game overall. Excited to watch this review!
Another review already, you weren't kidding when you wanted to compensate for last year. I always welcome your reviews and look forward to any future ones.

I love how there is an actual reason to why he’s emotionless and doesn’t speak

Johnny's new intro theme makes me wonder if I'm on LSD
I played this game for 99 hours, 34 minutes and I only have 106%.That is not a testimony to how hard this game is but to how bad I am at playing video games.
Johnnys opening theme makes him sound like a mob boss plus that cat 😂
9:10 The answer to that can be found in the Hollow Knight book. (why yes I am a nerd) "Applying and removing charms is a bit of a tricky process, one that is best done while at rest."
I love this game and almost broke myself with the broken vessel/ lost kin
I just got into this game like a week ago, your timing is pretty fucking great
Johnny Vs Spider-Man PS4 is long overdue.
Same with Johnny Vs Dragonball FighterZ
What about Johnny vs Ori and the Blind Forest? That's overdue too.
Hot damn that intro is still a boppin beat and i love it
Johnny, you didnt mentioned that for charms, certain combination changes their effect as well.
For example, the simple Mark of Pride, while it boost your range , it also stacks with Longnail
But if you have equipped Grubberfly's Elegy, it increases the projectile from that charm.
There are other interactions, i just pick the more boring one.
Another example: The Glowing womb lets you spawn little fly minions that bash into enemies, but if you combine it with the Defender's Crest, the fly minions explode when they come in contact with an enemy.
Use this damage build
Shaman Stone
Unbreakable Strength
Nailmaster glory
Quick Nail
It’s really fun, trust me
and to think that they removed an area because it was to big and they thought people wouldn't be able to handle how massive it was. i guess they were right going by your experience. but apparently it was the biggest are by far. the forest of bones is what it was called. though it seems its gonna be in the sequel to hollow knight. hollow knight: silksong. though im not sure how much it would have changed since its intended inclusion in hollow knight.
@@tipsyConfection "Rabi Ribi is not a good game" next your going to say is Fallout 76 is not a bad game. GTFO
I never clicked on a video faster when I saw you do Hollow Knight. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
Yo that Dreamcast shirt tho
Have yet to play this one, but as someone that's growing increasingly jaded with the pixel art approach a lot of indies seem to default to these days, I am loving this game's art and animation.

Your description of the game's lore was surprisingly accurate. It could be nick-picked out, but it's one of the best short descriptions of this game's lore I've heard so far.

You missed out, man, NKG is hard, but he quickly becomes a favorite.
Something to wash off the disappointment that is Metroid Prime 4s restructuring.

@Rymiledge @Mellow 147 I’ll do what I damn well please
That's it, you've lost your internet privileges. Give us your router immediately.
I absolutely adore this game.
And the way it handles dlc is stellar!

Minor Gripe: "Mana"
It's technically Soul.

!!! I just was thinking about you reviewing this when I was playing this game!
It's one of my absolute favorite games I've ever played!
Oh c'mon Johnny!! The storystelling for this game is really sweet and the lore is gorgeous! It's not a happy story by any means but it's damn marvelous.
Great video as always tho. :)
Gotta say Johnny, really loving the new jazzy intro.
Ori and the blind forest next :>)
Nothing like being sick at home and watching Johnny to make you feel better!
Speaking of Metroid...well, I'm sure you already know.
Great to see Johnny back on, what I hope is and will continue to be, a regular schedule releasing the Johnny vs videos.
Also loving the new theme. I know it's just a variation on the previous one but I like this one a lot better.
Bug Souls 4
@Gamerluna ah yes, a 2D hand drawn metroidvania about bugs is comparable to a 3D depressive quest in a JARPG
Woah shit, didn't expect another Johnny vid this soon.
Classic Mr Bean episode.
