Titanfall 2 - Mobility and Momentum

  • One of Titanfall 2's main draws is its parkour system; wallrunning, sliding and bunnyhopping is a core focus of Pilot gameplay. In this video I run over how these sweet movement systems work and why they make the game so much fun.

      Hey, at least you managed to master slide-hopping which I still can't willingly do. Both DOOM and Titanfall 2 are my pick for shooters this year. Both have awesome single player campaigns but it's TtF2's multiplayer that kept me coming back for more. Seriously, I've never stayed with a game's multiplayer mode for this long before.

    Reminds me of how the mastery of movement was absolutely necessary in Tribes Ascend... unless you played a heavy class. Heavy class was just like your slow plodding modern FPS and only required knowing when to jump and how to aim. Light and medium classes on the other hand required extensive knowledge of where to aim your straight-line firing explosives (spinfusors) because of how fast you were moving affected the speed of the projectile and where it would land. Not to mention that for the light and sometimes medium classes your goal was often not to kill others but to get the flag back to your team's stand as fast as possible. This required you to master the basis of moving fast in the game "skiing" knowing when to boost and how to land on a slope going downward to keep your speed.
    Some of the most adrenaline pumping moments was when you are chased or chasing someone with the flag and are desperately trying to kill the guy or force him to drop/keep the flag before he made it back to his team's flag stand, and both of you are going 300 km/h (sanics) firing explosives that changed where they would land on a second to second basis because both of your speeds and direction where changing every moment.

      I found out about Tribes from Tribes:Ascend and that was well after most of the player base left, but even now I came back to play the few matches still running just because it's that fun and exhilarating. I'm really hoping Midair (a spiritual successor to Tribes) will be able to bring the idea back to life.

    I would like to see a keyboard cam of you utilizing all of the movement skills while in combat and/or -- if you have an expensive keyboard -- a heat map of how often keys are pressed. Especially so if you could compare it to other mobility shooters like CoD or Wolfenstein. That kind of data interests me quite a bit and you seem to have hit the tip of the iceberg on the subject and, subsequently, why Titanfall 2 'feels' better to play than other mobility shooters.

    One of the my most satisfying moments in one matched had me cornering a titan, jumping all over the place and constantly rodeoing it and shooting it with the anti-titan laser gun until I destroyed it. I don't know how I did it, maybe the titan player was just shit, but it was so satisfying taking on a (somewhat) full health piloted titan as only a pilot. I was able to use the movement system to dodge between melee and shots until I destroyed it

    Titanfall seems like a series that'll be gone for years but will gain cult status. At some E3 a new game will be announced and everybody will get hyped. Then we'll find out that it's a reboot and not being made by the same developers. When the reboot comes out we'll see that these new people have no idea what made the previous games good. You'll have no mobility options and it'll be entirely about the titans.

    I'm currently designing my own game and this channel is an amazing inspiration!
    The only complaint I have is that each video feels like an extended train of thought with once pace, one tone, and no breaks. Sometimes I'll finish a video and think: "I learned so much!" but then fail to recall exactly what it is that I learned since it all of the information was packed in one massive chunk. I think good example of varying pacing and tone is Egoraptor's "Sequelitis" series.
    Regardless of whether I struggle to digest your content, it's still extremely insightful and mind-blowing!

I noticed you get shot less the more you move, which is a great way to encourage you to manoeuvre around rather than hiding behind objects.

    I understand what you're saying about movement feeling slow as soon as you try sprinting or shooting from the ground. I think if it wasn't that way though, that fun feeling of wallrunning or hopping would be lost. Imagine if you could play DOOM, and could slide or wallrun - but it didn't boost your already fast speed at all, and simply served as an equally-viable option to walking. Probably not an option so many people would go for.

    So basically, if you have trouble trying to strafe jumping in Quake 3/Live, good luck you're gonna need it? Can't strafe jump in Quake, and can't keep up momentum in Titanfall 2. I having nothing against these types of games, i just suck at them.

  • @lozm4835
    @lozm4835 7 років тому

    So, basically, PVP Warframe with a grappling hook instead of a bullet jump and aim glide (the latter being basically an aerial slide and the former a jump that boosts your forward momentum from a slide). That sounds pretty damn good if you ask me, even if I'm not a shooter guy (even in Warframe, I'm a melee person.)

  • @bluefletcherfish
    @bluefletcherfish 7 років тому

    You want them to make it so you can shoot while sprinting? Then there'd be no tradeoff, it's good for players to have to make that choice.
    Also, while I'm no gun guy, I did go shooting the other day, and I can guarantee anybody shooting guns while they're sprinting around isn't going to hit much.
    Obviously I recognize that isn't consistent with the fact you can shoot while boost sliding or wall running, but I still think it was a great design choice.

    A modern FPS with movement mechanics that isn't tied to one button abilities with cool downs? This has got to be a joke right? And it was on a console? There's no way I mean modern FPS developers are shit when it comes to movement. It's either slow walking speed with a sprint or pretending to have depth by having a button that has a cd that makes you go fast or jump high.

    Ah yes Titanfall 2, where the grappling hook is the only equipment and anyone who says otherwise is doing it wrong. Really sucks that EA killed this game out the gate by squishing it between infinite warfare and battlefield 1 especially when such attention to detail has been paid to the movement mechanics present in the game. I do hope a Titanfall 3 can rise out of the ashes and even further improve on this game.

    The hitscan part is a turn-off, but it's a concession to make the gamae more appealing to casuals on consoles. I wish this game had more singleplayer content. Apparently, you can finish the main campaign in like 6-7 hours and has little replayability apparently. If only the campaign was longer, had extra challenge mission and side content, then I'd get it.
