I've just moved to Bulgaria at 38. Feel like Ive retired. Beautiful country.

I am a Bulgarian who has left my home country in search of a better life abroad. Well, I found a better life in terms of paychecks, medical service, and social security. But I lost a lot in terms of socializing. I miss my friends. It is so difficult to befriend a Westerner. Thank God, I have my family beside me otherwise life would be very lonesome. Bulgarians are very friendly people. They will open the door of their home for you, share their meal with you, befriend you and make you part of their family, just because you are far from home and missing your family and friends. WE ARE EXTREMELY HOSPITABLE PEOPLE. Exactly the opposite from the culture in Western Europe where everyone keeps it all for themselves and you can live years without really knowing your neighbours and never being invited in your neighbours' home. Something unthinkable in Bulgaria. I miss also the food, so AFFORDABLE. Gosh, for the same price in Bulgaria I can invite at least 4 people to a restaurant (compared to Western Europe). What I do not like is corruption. However, Bulgaria still is a low crime rate country. Or is it? My experience dates back 10 years.
I'm a current final year student planning on going to study in plovdiv on a few months. While initially I only looked at how prices are overwhelmingly low compared to where I am now (Ireland), through some reading and watching I've grown to love the country. I've lived in Ireland my whole life though I'm of Southeast Asian descent and while the people are often deemed incredibly friendly, my experience with making friends are quite similar to that of yours. Curious as to why you left bg, anything apart from the apparent unemployment and low pay?
So, which is most important? Money or social life? Sounds like you would be happier in Bulgaria.
@@msmith2568 It was extremely hard in Bulgaria at the beginning of the century. Then things got better and the world financial crisis stroke, and some people were also heavily affected by it. Sometimes you don't have much of a choice. Still many Bulgarians think that it is way easier in Western Europe than it is.
As a Bulgarian I can not agree with this, I used to live in USA and people there are more social then Bulgarians. Also I have 3 apartments in Bulgaria and I don't know my neighbours.
@@t6bib The low prices will not last long when Bulgaria joins the Euro!

In a 30 minute video you can never do Bulgaria justice ...we bought houses their 2/3 years ago ..and I'd quite like to keep Bulgaria as Europes Best Kept Secret ..seriously though ..Bulgaria deserves to be recognized as a un-discovered jewel ...
Nothing is a secret. Most people will stay right where they are. More adventurous types will like to live elsewhere so I wouldn't worry. There is too much of this mindset like I found something special and I don't want others to spoil it. You are posting on the most visited website in the world and then you say you want to keep it a secret? That makes no sense at all.

Retired with a 7 figure portfolio and Receiving about $53k in dividends. I have been in the Stock market about 20 years. Am I worried? Am I selling? Absolutely not. I have purchased growth stocks too a little at a time over the past few weeks. I am going to sit back and observe how this all plays out, adding more at a time. my investment strategy actually calms me down. Eye on the prize, stay the course!
Dividend investing is great, just be patient. I went from making enough passively to pay for my netflix and hulu to now making enough to cover half of my mortgage. Not commenting this to brag, just to give hope to anyone who is discouraged by tiny gains in the beginning.
what route did you take? how can one invest more efficiently? help. sounds like you got something going for you. I am new at investing and really want in.

Hi, I enjoyed watching your video. I already bought a property in Bulgaria. The only thing missing is the mention of the city of Veliko Tarnovo. It's one of the most beautiful cities of Bulgaria and it use to be the old capital of Bulgria.
True but try to find place to park on the hills....
Can foreigners buy properties in bulgaria?
We have just bought a beautiful home and begun renovating. I know people in the UK who have spent more on a car, yet we have a big home with land. Thank you Bulgaria...
How are you enjoying it there so far?

@@bamboozle999 loving it thank you 🙂
How much. Only a couple needs to live comfortably in Bulgaria per month without paying rent 🤔 now in 2023? We r looking at buying a property in the villages south of Burgas
I miss Veliko Tarnovo in this video, one of the oldest settlements in Europe.
Absolutely agree with you, Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most colorful cities in Bulgaria. If you visit it, do not miss the "Sound and Light" Show (offered by the city council on request, mainly for foreign visitors and upon paying a fee, which is ridiculously small and affordable). But the show itself is one in a lifetime. It will reveal the whole beauty and magic of Veliko Tarnovo.
Burgas as well...
I am a Bulgarian living in England, then a video broke down in tears of love 😍
Where abouts ?
Most stray animals are friendly and will even let you pet them, I'm 20, I've lived my whole life here and in that time I've only met about 3 stray dogs that actually wanted to bite me, be that because they were aggressive or i unintentionally scared them into trying to bite me. But if you are afraid of diseases and the like you can just shoo them away or if you so pet them, just wash your hands with soap or hand sanitizer.
As for why most strays are friendly, that's because we tend to give them food and water when we see them, we pity them for having to live out in the cold winters and hot summers, at least most of us do, there are some who find it funny to mess with them, which I find sad.
Stray dogs are a big problem, especially for old people. I don't have much of a problem fending for myself, but my grandma has been attacked and bitten and I know of other occurances where stray dogs endangered the life and safety of the elderly in my town.
It's usually most humans you have to watch out for. Animals generally are not the issue. Feed and pet them and you have a friend. I know, the US is no different, we have strays here as well. I found?a stray cat and got some cat food and now he's mine. I took him in and I'm a big dog person, not a cat person. Animals pick the human they like not the other way around.
Do not mix Bulgarian roots with Turkish nonesense (Bulgaria is at least 1000 years older than them). The names Turkey and otomans did not even exist when great ancient prime 7 tribes of 7 brothers call them selfs Bolghars. Bulgarian name comes from proto Bulgars from words "Bog-hary" wich literally translates from proto Bulgarian language "thank god" as we had more gods than Greeks back then. The name Bulgaria was never changed ever since its creation, around 2500 years ago acording to secretly preserved sourcess throught centuryes. We don't just use Cyrilic alphabet, we invent it, we don't just speak Bulgarian - it is the main base of all slavic languages incuding Russian (btw we give them the Cyrilic alphabet along with christianity). I see you've really poor research on Bulgaria's history, so don't speak of something you are not familiar with. Do not relay on Facebook as virtual social live is not important for us and most of the mature people does not even have social media accounts. Street animals are not problematic as they are healthy and won't bite you because all Bulgarian people taking care of them like pets and they got inspected often - you can see yellow plastic marks on their ear.
As Bulgarian native I wish to thank you for your time and efforts creating that nice video! I agree and confirm most of your statements, with some exceptions and comments:
1. Sofia is not the best town to live in. The major advantage is that you are close to the biggest international airport. But you should consider high level of pollution, traffic jams and lack of typical Bulgarian hospitality and atmosphere. Sofia becomes more an EU capital and lost it's charm. Well, you may find charming some old communistic and historical buildings.
2. Although there were few fragments of videos from Veliko Turnovo, you never mention that town. It's our old capital, unique place, I highly recommend everybody to visit it. It's a must if you are into historical tourism or plan to live in Bulgaria.
3. Be prepared for corruption /within police, public administration and up to the government/. Poor public medical care system and plenty of poor people in the country side.
4. Stray dogs might be a problem only at the slums or some isolated villages.
Finally a tip: my favorite beach is Аркутино, you can google it.
Thank you for all your local tips! It's appreciated. I usually choose three cities and there are so many to choose from but yes Veliko Turnovo is definitely a great town, I agree!
@@roninblue5885 You well-come. But I'm the one to thank you! Best wishes and best regards from Bulgaria
@@georgiyordanov6191 if I owned a house there that was vacant for half the year would it get broken into, or would it be safe to keep things inside of it? Can you trust neighbors to help look out for it, or trust that security systems work to keep it safe? I would love to have a second home in Bulgaria but concerned about how secure it would be.
@@rubytuesday9539 not
@@rubytuesday9539 Well, no security system could provide 100% security. It might happen that security guys are criminals... I don't recommend their service.
I guess you want to buy a house in a village, not in a town, then yes - you definitely can and should trust neighbors. Would be best to choose village with minimum or no gypsies.
There are still some villages, where people did not lock their doors even while they are sleeping at the night. Because there is no criminals, just pristine air, silence and lovely nature. But basically that's isolated mountain places, not everybody preference. Feel free to ask me here, if you choose your village/property.
I visited Bulgaria a few times. Plovdiv is a very old and nice city. I also liked Varna. Next time I need to visit Veliko Tarnovo. There are also beautiful mountain villages with authentic architecture, like Koprivshtitsa. And not to forget the famous Rila monastery. Some less popular towns suffer from depopulation, as many youngsters try to make a living abroad. Food is cheap and usually good, but there are not many high cuisine restaurants. The climat can be harsh in winter and super hot in summer. I had close to 40 degrees in Plovdiv. As hot as the summer can be, as warm are the people. They're very welcoming, helpful and interested. I always felt safe on the streets, also at night. The nature is stunning, especially in the mountains. A beautiful, maybe slightly underrated country that is definitely worth a visit!
Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe and in the world.
I was looking into New Hampshire in the US, possibly S America....Canada....Florida in the US.....Spain, Italy and Germany. But after a lot of research....Bulgaria is looking better and better and better.
Do not come to the US. Even in the rare spots with hertige american culture like new hampshire or western rural culture like nebraska are being ruined by the globalist consumer culture and all the worst aspects of america are promoted. Additionally, the cost of living is outrageous. All the places you mentioned are going to cost you a lot to live in, just the basics are expensive, and now we have 20% inflation, so its going to get even worse. The number one cost will be housing, and you wilk have to pay the security tax for safe housing. This is the hidden tax applied to the monthly rent or cost of the property to live in a safe area. For instance, in chicago you can buy a place on the southside for under 50k, but you will get shot. So the equivalent place in a modestly safe area like rogers park will cost 300k. Don't come to the US, it is literally turning into poor, corrupt northern mexico. No part of the country has been left untouched, even the tiny rural town of 200 people i grew up in now has illegal mexicans in it and crime has increased 400%. This is a tiny midwestern town with 200 people and it has been ruined, now there is trash along the roads, illegals are everywhere, and the culture i grew up with is gone. Do not come to the us if you want to live a safe and quiet life.
So what did you decide? I am American. I was married to a Bulgarian for 10 years and also lived there for 2+ years.
My home country America USA is expensive like Canada. Need good money or rich to find a decent place to live. Bulgaria sounds interesting.
Yes it’s cheaper there just came from a vacation and we enjoyed it
You seem to have confused Roma Gypsies with Romanians. Roma does not mean from Romania. Roma originate from India.
Rom/Roma is the language of gypsies. In many EU countries it's considered racist to call them anything else then Rom/Roma or in my country Romer. Many of them in Romania to. Their nativity is very high and is the only folk group in Bulgaria/Romania that increase in population.
Bulgaria is an incredible gem. On the business side, Bulgaria has almost the lowest taxes in Europe and a high-quality fibre internet. Bulgaria is one of the most Digital Nomad friendly countries in Europe, if not the world.
yeah, an incredible gem for people seeking countries for lowest taxes, who in the end always have the outway of "returning home" to be supported and being taken care of in a system they never contributed to

This video is misleading. If you are not a Bulgarian citizen, you cannot buy land in Bulgaria. (I know this firsthand...my wife is Bulgarian and we had to fight to have my name added to the deed on our house) You CAN, however, buy an apartment or business structure.
You do not have to "register at a police station" for an extended stay....that is ridiculous. You can stay 90 days as a visitor without question...and a 90 day extension is fairly easy to get.
Sofia is NOT inexpensive...it is quite the opposite.. Good luck finding an apt. for 600 bucks....lol And, it is NOT "walkable"....it is a very dirty, confusing city to navigate and has zero parking. It is a wonderful city...but, it is expensive and a nightmare to try to find your way around. (I take a taxi EVERYWHERE)
English is widely spoken here...so, there is very little "language barrier" issues. English is a required language in the school system.
Also, it is misleading to call Bulgaria "reasonable" when it comes to cost of living. That is relative to wages...and wages are extremely low. So, unless you have a cushy job lined up, or a trust fund, be prepared to struggle.
"Racism" is almost non-existent...Bulgarians are more worried about the gypsy population that is sucking the system dry.
Many things you say are true...Bulgaria is AMAZING in so many ways. You should visit some time.
im willing to move with my wife and daughter to bulgaria, looking for my company to pay my re alocation there
Well, some people watching this might think moving to Sofia would mean going to the beach every weekend, but reality is you are 4-5 hour drive away from the beach. In addition, don't count on people speaking English everywhere as this is just not true - young people do speak English, but people on low-paying jobs don't so you will likely struggle in the supermarket counter or in the taxi.
I find shopping easy overseas as an English only speaker. Electronic readout and there's no need for casual conversation that much more common in the United States than elsewhere. As long as you understand the denomination of paper money or coins, you'll be fine.
I would assume if you are planning on moving to a foreign country you will be intelligent enough to learn the language, not just an ignorant tourist who relies on natives to speak a foreign language (English)

I'd love to go to Bulgaria one day. Lovely looking old buildings, also so much history. I could go on with what I like about this part of Europe. Also love their clothing and folk traditional music.
Live Bulgaria🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🐺
An interesting and quite comprehensive video. I assume your target audience is Americans (not Europeans) as you quote prices in US$, which are meaningless to me. I would prefer in Leva or Euros but that is just me. The "o" in Povdiv is short (to be fair you seemed to get this right the sceond time it was mentioned) and the "e" at the end of sirene (white cheese) is pronounced not mute. Regarding driving I have found that there has been a very big improvement in the rural roads particullary as regards reduction in number and seriousness of potholes in recent years but this does vary from (Oblast) province to province. I have not needed 4WD, but winter tyres are obligatory from when the winter season is officially declared. Like most people in BG, I have two sets of car wheels, one with summer tyres one with winter tyres as it is easier to just change the wheeels than remove and refit tyres.
Also, Bulgaria is pronounced BulgAria, not BulgEria. "A" like "Advantage", not "E" like "Example".
27:00 Mostly Cash
Is personally Pro to me.
It's not like that I would be against electric. money but I hate the idea that there would only be electric money to use.
I am for the idea that both cash and electric money is in use everywhere.
Otherwise good video thumb's up.
Honestly, in every restaurant or shop there's a way to pay with a card. It's a small exception these that don't have the possibility to pay in such a way.
my mother once owned a kiosk and sometimes the payment terminal didn't work or was otherwise broken so customers had to pay in cash
i think the world is going the way of card payment but i find it extremely stupid to leave cash out

Thank you so much for your great information sir, top of my list. I’m so impressed so much beautiful and clean.cant wait to go,
L from Bulgaria 🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬😊
Thank you for this video! I have been saying for years
that Bulgaria is the most beautiful country in the world.
It has everything. For a person from the USA, looking for
housing with amenities similar to what Americans have come
to be used to is not cheap. I checked into houses
near Varna and you will not find them to be inexpensive.
Still, they are less then what it costs in any big city in the USA.
I found affordable houses between Golden Sands and
Varna. Another city that is affordable is Stara Zagora.
Basically a nice 2 br 2 bath apartment in
Varna is around 70,000 to over
100,000 Euros. I found some houses in the 100,000
to 150,000 Euros for a 3 br 2 bath outside but near
Varna and slightly cheaper near or in Stara Zagora.
Also construction is more masonry as opposed
to the usual 2 x 4 sheet rock walls as found in
the USA so you don't deal with the 'paper thin' walls
that transmit noise easily between apartments.
If you like rock music, Sofia has a bunch of amazing bands like
Hellion Stone, Der Hunds, Fat Bertha and Caliberty.
Not sure at present, but I am seriously thinking of
leaving the USA for Bulgaria. Oh one thing.
Bulgaria actually created the cyrillic writing system and
a lot of signs and such are in Bulgarian and written in cyrillic so
you need to learn both the language and the cyrillic writing.
USA is getting too expensive and also has higher rates
of violent crime then any city in Bulgaria. You are
35 times more likely to be a victim of crime in a
US city then in a city like Stara Zagora or Plovdiv. Bottom line.
Do your own research on the cost of living. Be realistic.
If you had a 3000 sq ft house in the USA, don't
expect to be happy in an 800 sq ft apartment with 2 small bedrooms
and one bath. Also, stuff like cars and such cost as much
in Bulgaria as they do in the USA. I mean, an Infiniti
Q60 is 55K Euros in the USA and Bulgaria. So be prepared to
to pay the same for many things in Bulgaria as you did in the USA
or other western countries.
Lucky you! You are presumably totally free from MAG, or else, what makes you prefer this poor country with its poor people scattered outside foreign supermarkets and malls in their futile efforts to survive?
@@josefnagy1697 :D poor? You just cant understand life...
@@tazzz1783 I understand life after 68 years, and I also understand what idiots keep telling but understanding is not the same as agreeing,
can you tell me how far 1000usd last you in bulgaria in aoth of you buy a hoise or apartment
I don't agree with some of this. The prices in supermarkets and restaurants are very similar to those in Western Europe and even in many cases more expensive compared to UK and Germany. If you consider the fact that the minimum wage in Bulgaria is is less than 400 Dollars, I would ask you to imagine how easy it is to live there.
I am heading out there too ... Hope to rent then buy a small holding. This is a brilliant video for those looking!
Veliko Tarnovo is my favourite.
Nice video. I know that there is a lot of false information about the history of Bulgaria, including in the old textbooks but the name Bulgaria, the origin of Bulgarians have nothing to do with Turks. it is the equivalent of claiming that Native Americans in the US originate in England.
Thank you for your comment. Where do you yourself go to find accurate information about Bulgaria?
@@roninblue5885 There are I believe 23 theories about the origin of Bulgarians. Nowadays everyone relies on Wikipedia.
If you doubt any theory just compare 23AndMe tests of Bulgarians or simply google: "Bulgarian guys pics" vs " Turkish guys pics".
What Rositsa was probably trying to say is that what we believe is our history would be very close to this video below:
ua-cam.com/video/k_vEYjWxqo8/v-deo.html
As a Bulgarian I can say this video is surprisingly accurate. The one thing I`m not sure about is that everything in the capital is in walking distance. I can`t say Sofia is a small city. Maybe if you live in the city center maybe everything you normally need would be in a walking distance, but if you need to go somewhere specific outside of the center you may have to use the public transport or have a car, which is really not to be preferred since it is sometimes a real struggle to find a parking spot!
Thank you RoninBlue. God bless his soul. Thank you Sami. I love my country, even though medical system is not that great and corruption is so high, as well as the prices (in comparison to the salaries). However, I would still choose to go bck. I travelled the world and discovered that my country it is a little jewel. Thank you all.
I am pleased to hear that you've discovered a jewel at home after seeing the world. We need to find a way to outsmart corruption that exists in every country :) Thank you for your kind note, Mira. I wish you all the best. Love, Sami

The best vlog that I have seen on Bulgaria so far,
2 best reasons - it's beautiful and cheap.
cheap because everything's crap
Good for you! Cheers! Poor Bulgarians may disagree and go abroad for making a life, maybe begging for money outside some Northern European supermarket
@@josefnagy1697 Poor Bulgarians work as doctors or engineers in the North but poor gypsies do what you say. Probably a hungarian can't see the difference.... And it's cheap for the people who might retire in Bulgaria, obviously....

Bulgarians are not rasist. They don t like the gipsys. But they are not racist to black people. Bulgaria is not strong seismic region. There the last big earthquake with 100 deads was in 1928. 100 years there was no big earthquake. In your whole life in Bulgaria you may register 3-4 very light earthquakes. Nothing dramatical.
I have a ton of stuff I need to do this morning. Maybe I’ll just watch this lovely video first 😂
I'm from Bulgaria and i live in Plovdiv!🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬
The video really didn't show beauty of Bulgaria ? food is cheap and excellent ?
A beautiful and unspoiled country for now. Being in the EU will pollute it and it will eventually become expensive to live in like all EU countries. Rural land prices have increased by around 300% since Bulgaria joined the EU and Europeans started snapping up the cheap land.
So I as a US citizen I cannot buy a small little farm outside the cities of Bulgaria?
"Relics of a Soviet System", that was the best healthcare system in a world, but what do you know, lol

yo dude i am Bulgarian and i just want to say that at 6:05 the stadium and the teatere are not roman they are much older then that they are made by the trakis like 6000 years ago so it's not from the romans and at 9:29 that is not a midevel church my dude the construction of it was finished just before WW1 started and this is not a hate comment i just want to correct you :)

Nice film but I dont think the first 20 seconds of this film really shows the Bulgarian cost. Please tell me if I am wrong by give the exact position of this schene
Well, I've watched that 20 seconds again and again, it seem you are right! I should have known that place if it is in Bulgaria... I'm 90% positive it is not in Bulgaria, maybe Greece?
This gives me food for thought. I am very unhappy living in the UK right now. I am retired and tired of the cost of living and therefore looking for a civilised country as the UK used to be, but not anymore. Bulgaria might fit the bill for me to live.
