      People are wicked. Unlike other holy texts, people are presented with all their flaws and weaknesses and it never elevates any humans to demigods or supermen, or offers any way for people to find heaven by their own works.

      That's one way to view it. Or it could be seen as a study in human behavior, highlighting our strengths and our weaknesses. Full of examples on both sides, of what to do, and what not to do (as seen from the social dynamics at the time it was written). But then, one would have to have an interest in human psychology, and a good internal compass of human morality in order to be able to make sense of it.
      The best UA-cam presenter of the Christian perspective is Rev Ed Trevors. The best overall source on God I've found so far, is the Urantia Book... not at all like the Bible. And only for the honest truth seeker.

      The thing is, it's those who are terrible at their faiths that we hear the most about, especially evangelicals. But, as religion will never disappear (too many of us have had actual spiritual experiences that were fantastic), the wiser course would be to encourage people with a religion to be better at it, so they don't become an awful example of their faith that we hear about on the news. If all Christians were really good at practicing what Jesus taught, no one would have a problem with them. Ed is one of them.

Who am I to doubt? It is not like I knew him, or picked up a phone and called him. We were completely cut off for over a week. He just showed up and said God wanted him to do that. He would not even accept payment. And the people of Samaritan's Purse who helped my son when his house was completely flooded were sent by God according to them. The kids running around on four wheelers delivering water, and food were according to them sent by God. Crazy, enthusiastic, disorganized, and absolutely wonderful kids. Food, water, clothing, comfort. And the prevailing theme is this is to those doing it, God's work. I registered with FEMA two weeks ago. Yet to see them. I am commanded by God to love Him with all my heart soul and mind. I therefore acknowledge the power of His universe. But the second thing I am commanded is like unto it. If we're agreed that god doesn't objectively exist, or that the definition of god is in inherently beyond objective assessment, then we're restricted to talking about the field of subjective experience.
    And that's fine, as long as we're careful to remember that it's subjective only.
    Also, even subjective experiences have some objective correlate. If, for example, I feel sadness at a memory or when considering some imagined scenario, these feelings are still based on what I've come to understand or internalize from experience of the objective world.
    Emotions and even sensations can exist without any such correlate, but in that case there's nothing more to be said about them, beyond comments on neurology. A bare emotion is just that. It carries no MEANING.
    It's interesting, though, that if a bare emotion does arise within us, we seldom leave it alone. Instead, we'll automatically look for something specific to tie it to. If we observe ourselves mindfully, we can even see how we'll try on different memories or stories to find the one which seems to most closely match the emotion. And then we'll explain to ourselves that the story sunmoned the emotion, when it would be more correct to say that the opposite sequence took place.
    That's a very basic way in which we create meaning. But it's heuristic, imprecise, not entirely reliable. We arrive at quite a few false positive matches that way, because we have a selection bias towards false positives, and yet our sense of conviction can't distinguish between false positives and true positives. Strong convictions do not correlate reliably with objective truth.
    Wity this sort of cognitive equipment, how can we possibly hope to do better than what evolution has given us? The answer (which we all recognize, as soon as we stop to think about it) is that we practice with abstract reasoning on simple examples until it becomes a habit of thought. And then, when some situation comes along which resembles that habit of thought, we use the sense of recognition we feel in response as a kind of signal to look more closely, to compare again, until a sende of conviction builds that our practice tells us we can rely on. So it's no longer just a sense of conviction, a bare emotion, it's a set of interlocking points of conviction, each based on a practice that we can intentionally review for correctness.
    Searle has much to say about the nature of consciousness, most of it pretty good in my opinion. But he tends to do what we all do, making consciousness out to be more elaborate and mysterious than it needs to be.
    Consciousness is the part of thought that can make statements about what it's doing. It's not all of cognition, which we know is largely unconscious. It's just this particular ability. But it allows us to step back very slightly from being fully immersed in subjective experience, and try out various stories about what we're experiencing. The stories are themselves explicit, so we can tell stories in turn about them. This marks a small qualitative change in cognitive ability with huge implications.
    And, to be honest, we're still not all very good at it. Religious convictions are one result of not being very good at it. Strong convictions do not correlate reliably with objective truth. Religious people believe that they do, and may go so far as to cultivate strong convictions for their own sake.

    Given how people describe God as being timeless and and spaceless, and existing outside of time, no, he doesn't exist. His very existence is impossible. If God is timeless and exists outside of space and time, then how could his timelessness allow him to exist for a time to create time from timelessness? If God has no physical form and exists as a spiritual form, then he is nothing, and if nothing exists, then he also doesn't exist because he is nothing that exists in nothing as nothing for no amount of time and is able to become something with time from nothingness and timelessness to create something with time from nothing with timelessness. How does that work? 🤔

    Does god exist? Well to tell ya the truth there is just nothing that leads me to believe such a thing. I personally think that gods are a human construct but I am willing to change my beliefs in the face of empirical evidence. Thus far the gods have failed to provide any. As for faith, well that just provides belief and does not provide knowledge. I don't want to believe gods exist, I want to know they do, if they do. Only then can I believe.
    Even if I could believe such a god exists, I could not worship this god. Believing is one thing, worshiping, well that's a whole new ball game. I have spent almost 70 years on this planet trying to be as good and moral a person as I could and if that is not acceptable to a supposedly moral god then I would want nothing to do with it. It would be awfully petty of a god that couldn't get over this belief thing and condemn the good only for the sake they didn't believe. This fact on it's own leads me to believe such a god does not exist. If a god truly wants me to believe it should know what it would take to make that happen in an instant.

    Why would anyone believe that a God exists? You look at the history of the universe, the Earth, life, human beings, our societies and civilizations, and conclude this must have all been created for us by some being who cares about us, and is capable of helping and protecting us? That entire concept makes zero sense. Then just look at how humans who believe in a God treat each other and also non-believers Why would anyone want to join that chaos and history of enormous cruelty? As Carl Sagan observed, we must outgrow faith, and overcome religion in order to survive. I wish I were optimistic.

Why is it allowing this to occur? Why so much suffering throughout the entire spectrum of living things? How could a caring, powerful supreme being create this, then demand that we worship it or suffer even worse eternal suffering? It simply defies all reasonable comprehension. Existence itself refutes the very concept of a God that humans should care about or that cares about us.

    • @thetruthaboutscienceandgod6921
      @thetruthaboutscienceandgod6921 2 місяці тому

      @@coachafella Hey, Coach: You have asked some profound questions. My responses are below:
      1) Why does God allow suffering? As Billy Graham once said: “Suffering carries a message of mystery. And we may never know until God explains all things to us.” Or, as the Bible states: For now, we see as though through a glass darkly. Still, nonbelievers have no real basis with which to question the God’s character, given that they have no objective moral foundation on which to do so. Morality for an atheist is just a matter of opinion. Additionally, when Adam and Eve rebelled against God, sin entered the world, and they were driven out of the Garden to fend for themselves. That's when God told man that life would not be easy, but to take the Earth and subdue it. Subduing the Earth has taken us thousands of years, from invention of the wheel to modern transportation, to landing on the Moon, and to life-saving medicines. We still have further to go, of course. And God promised mankind that in due time, a Savior would take away the sins of the world and man would be reconciled to God.
      2) Why would God condemn anyone to eternal suffering? He won’t. Following the resurrection at the End of the Age, all humans will be judged by Jesus Christ. Those whom He condemns will go to what the Bible calls the “second death”. They will cease to exist forever and be forgotten. Meanwhile, those whom Jesus has not condemned will enter into glorious eternal life.
      3) You wrote that existence itself refutes the very concept of God. That is not correct. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 1:20: “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.” The phrase “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” is from Psalm 19:1. It means that the beauty and awe of nature show us the work of God and the existence of God.
      4) Finally, I provide examples in my first brief video of scientific facts contained in the Bible; facts that the writers thousands of years ago could not have been aware of without divine knowledge given to them by God. And today’s scientists agree with those scientific facts.
      Thank you again for your important questions. Please let me know if you have any more. Thanks, and take care.

      The writers of the Books of the Bible lived thousands of years ago and could not have known that the scientific facts they wrote down were true without divine inspiration given to them by Jesus Christ / The God of the Bible.
      For example: Moses was an isolated sheepherder who knew absolutely nothing about the geologic history of the Earth, which occurred over billions of years by time as we experience it here on Earth.
      Yet, Moses wrote correctly in Genesis that during the Earth’s development there was a time when it was totally covered with water and then the dry land appeared in one place (the supercontinent that existed before tectonic plate movement began, of course).
      Scientists today agree that the Earth was once covered with water and that land initially appeared in one place, just as the Bible says.

    The question, "Does God exist?" is irrational and inadequate. My counter-question is, "What do you mean by God?" If you're talking about the gods of religion or a totem deity, or a divine force, then that needs to be clarified. If I were to respond to such a question, I might respond by asking, "How can a nonsentient universe create a sentient being?" Maybe the only "proof" we can have is the realization that we can never disprove the existence of a higher being or power. We're just too small.

    More people should commit to hard atheism for God specifically (that's capital-g God, the name of the god in Christianity), due to the Problem of Evil being a self-contradiction in that being's definition. A being cannot knowingly cause all evil and be "all-good"; they must be at least a little evil if they intentionally create a little evil (and an all-knowing God must have caused all evil knowingly, and causing evil is causing evil whether you kill someone directly or use murder-bots or have even more steps than that between you and the murder; if you know for a fact the person will die because of your action and there is no other major factors causing that death, you're responsible for it).
    For other gods, the idea is more open ended as he discusses. We can't prove or disprove them, so we shouldn't believe in them. (And to be clear, disproving these ideas is often impossible, like how if Gary shows up in the thread arguing Spirit-Elves exist and caused the universe, nobody can actually disprove their existence. Yet we shouldn't believe in Gary's elves.)

    • @ShadowveilFox
      @ShadowveilFox 3 місяці тому

      I don't know any hard atheists besides Aron Ra and myself, and maybe the Amazing Atheist. I started off as a soft atheist but after hearing so many good arguments, understanding more about how the universe works and the history of religions, I'm pretty sure one doesn't exist and it's existence is impossible, and the Christian god could oy do what is logically possible as the book says, so he couldn't create something from nothing or exist at all. The people that came up with this nonsense weren't smart enough at the time to go I er everything and make sure there were no flaws in logic with this entity they made up.

    • @majmage
      @majmage 3 місяці тому

      @@ShadowveilFox Sure, but again hard atheism is justified specifically for god(s) where we know of those knock-down logic errors (self-contradictions like the Problem of Evil).
      Those arguments don't universally apply to all gods: they only prove the non-existence of certain ones whose attributes half self-contradictions (or other logic error).
      So
      * we know certain gods don't exist, because they contradict themselves. We should be hard atheists of those gods.
      * that includes God (the god of Christianity)
      * that doesn't include every god though, so we should only be soft atheists of those other gods (we should still be atheists until someone can demonstrate such a being shares reality with us, of course).

      But to call it false is a claim "no gods exist", and that takes evidence.
      It's the lack of evidence of gods that makes the belief ridiculous.
      Yet you lack evidence no gods exist, and so that belief is also ridiculous (again, except for the gods where we actually do have knock-down arguments; those arguments are the evidence justifying a belief that those specific gods don't exist).

    Silly about does GOD exist. Throughout history it's always been gods. As we know El Elyon and the Elohim, the gods "We created man in our image" the gods were multiple. Isreal made a covenant with El Elyon and each canannite tribe their neighbors made covenants with one of the other Elohim. After the Babylonian exile the elders desperately sought out a monotheistic God. They turned the Elohim into angels and generally changed definitions to get what they wanted. Such does not change reality.
