good tips for beginner's man 👍🏻👍🏻. some guys like gooey soft eggs some like bouncing balls . i like mine stream hardened then salt cured - they always seem to work for me - even after 3 years in the freezer
First coho I ever caught was a doe, harvested eggs, did a combo of two of your cures and tied my own just like this, landed a 30" steelie in a 2ft deep creek the next day. Great guide, stay humble.
I tried your brown sugar brine and man I’m impressed… hit the salmon River for thanksgiving and hit 3 small Steelies … thanks for the great tips!!! Tight lines
I like the Borax and Jello powder as well. I use the raspberry flavour on skein chunks and that’s killer mix for those sweet tooth salmon in marinas and harbours. The Pautzke is great for loose eggs, I also don’t river cure the eggs. Thanks for the demonstration Fray. Good to know a few different methods.
Nice! When I used to cure salmon eggs I did the salt method but a tad different. I would river harden, salt water bath until they float, rinse the eggs off in cold water and then soak the eggs in cold water and they would become bouncy balls. It was crazy! The one thing I found was after I stuck them in the fridge, they would shrivel up a tiny bit but were still very hard when tying. What does the sugar do instead of using plain water?
Trout and steelhead love sweet things so it adds sweetness to the eggs while salmon prefer salty things so I don’t use sugar water when fishing for them
Just wondering, im new to curing/making my own bait. From my limited understanding I thought majority of roe curing products are salt based are they not? If just using straight borax no salt is needednto cure the roe from the sounds of it?
Good video, thank you. So, the moment you catch the hen, bleed it at the river, then put the fish on ice in a cooler then cut/clean it when you get home?
Thank you, just done with second fall run for king salmon I'm going to try to make My own bait for king salmon, so good luck see you on the river this fall.thanks again Edward Henry
Thank you for the video. Should we have to wash after curing with borax in next day and dry them before fridging? or Should we rinse before making a roe sac?
@@FishFray Thank you. Are they pops out easily? I cured loose roe with non-iodized salt and rinsed it with tap water. It makes like a rubber ball but the problem is that the roe sac is getting white after 2-3 casts. Not sure why. Is it because of the amount of salt or any other cause?
Once wrapped in balls, can you freeze them? Will they deteriorate too quickly? I've seen other's store in some additional borax as well. Your take on these methods?
Currently a student in Mount Pleasent and just got my first king this past week. 25lb female. Easily the best experience of my life. I wanna do some steelhead and salmon fishing now on my own. Not fully sure where to start, preferably wanna fish the muskegon because its closest. Got any tips on equipment and locations? Thanks.
Buy a centerpin you will never regret it. It’s the easiest way to get a better drift and catch a lot more steelhead. Plus fighting a fish with no drag system is very fun
Gotta try pro-glo bro. Made by beau-mac here out west. Just barely sprinkle. Great stuff, and or marinating in sand shrimp powder in your brine.👍🤙🎣 salt n sugar good too.
If u can't vacuum seal. Full a sink or bucket with water and dip the bag into the water until the zipper is only exposed. Don't let Any water in ofcourae but the pressure squeezes all the air out very evenly and thouroughly
Yes, depending on how well developed the eggs were in the fish. If the fish was very loose and ready to spawn, the result without river curing will be decently firm
For the Pautzke, do you just use natural I guess and forgo the coloured options and rely on the spawn net for colour then? Also do you have a preference on king, coho, brown or trout eggs to catch steelhead?
i cut the membrane with scissors then put it in spawn bags. i cover with borox detergent over night first. store in freezer and have caught fish on these 2 and 3 years later.
River curing looses a ton of good scent aswell I never understood why you’d want an egg with less scent that is harder and won’t milk nearly aswell either.
Salt sugar cure is by far my favorite in terms of scent, but river cured eggs just last forever in the fridge. Nice to pull out some bags that have sitting in the fridge for 3 months and still look prestige. Low scent but look great, more natural looking than beads IMO.
I'm new to curing roe and wondering if someone can answer this. I'm trying the salt brine and brown sugar method, but my spring/king/chinook eggs won't float to the top. It's been 2 hours and it sounded like Fish Fray didn't wait that long. Can someone explain why? Or what I should do different? I used 1/4 cup of salt per litre of cold tap water. I also started the curing about 36 hours after the catch. And roe came from a more mature white spring. If any of that is the reason, please let me know. I've taken some out at intervals and kept em in separate batches to do some testing. Gonna leave a batch just soaking in the brine until some float.
Prolly be to late now I’m fairly new I just keep adding salt until the water has grains on the bottom switch bowls leaving the last 1 in of water with all the grains out and using the fully saturated bowl for salt brine usually eggs float pretty quick I think the salt just make them float
3 parts borax, 2 parts sugar, and 1 part salt. Caught a ton of fish with that cure whether it’s loose eggs or skein. Personally I would never river cure eggs, that’s the worst thing to do.
Hey buddy love your vids. Do u have any suggestions on where to get fresh spawn if I haven’t been able to catch any or don’t have the hookup from a friend? I’ve tried the pautzke premium trout eggs but they don’t seem to work that well.
Instead of using string I cut up foot sections of copper extersions cords with single strands of copper wire in them and cut the insulation away a inch back on both ends of the foot pieces and pull a piece of the wire our to tie the bags'''
Plus you can get the hook in them much better with soft eggs. When you eggs are hard you fight the fish with an egg sack on your hook. Makes no sense to run river hardened eggs. I can tell many reasons not to water harden!
Does anyone use fresh non cured eggs anymore. I know they go bad in a week but there is nothing better than fresh spawn bags. Also I hate that spawn netting and magic thread. I use scarf material and plain old white sewing thread. Scarfs are harder to break open on snags and easier to tie.
They call me “The Wizard” around here for the baits this ole’ salty dawg puts up. Fishing 2/3 year old baits that STILL catch fish. Haha “BAIT FO LYFE” 🦾🎣🤘🏼🐟🖤😎

How long to river water cure ? And how long to salt cure ?
👍I appreciate the patience it takes to film those bobber downs! Great intro Fray!

Ty for the info here! Very helpful! Q...is it an unhealthy fish that has little white eggs amongst the more nature eggs in their sac?
How do the fire brine eggs work for you?
How do you cire your eggs for skamania?
Hey man great video. I have some creek hardend eggs that are bouncy balls doxi even need to cure them or can I just tie them how they are
How long do the eggs sit in the salt water before you put them in the sugar water?
Thank you for the video. Should we have to wash after curing with borax in next day and dry them before fridging? or Should we rinse before making a roe sac?
No need to wash or rinse after curing. Any leftover borax should dissolve in the water on your first cast

Is there a way to know the hens eggs are fully mature? Especially if they're not spewing out upon landing the fish?
do you leave the sugar water eggs in the fridge or at room temperature all night?
Always keep the bait cold if possible
Once wrapped in balls, can you freeze them? Will they deteriorate too quickly? I've seen other's store in some additional borax as well. Your take on these methods?
This was an awesome video. I've always done straight borax but I'll definitely try adding some jello next time.

Great to meet / see you on the river today. Go Rams!
Softer the better fray. You know what's up! Water hard ruins eggs

Have you ever added brown sugar to your eggs. I tried it last year and slayed fish.

What hook size you use and style
How did you get the eggs out of the salted water?
Did you pour it out or did you use a strainer or other.
Thanks Thank
Until they float
Ngl bro I appreciate this vid. All cures in one video
If you don’t river cure the loose eggs, will you still get a decently firm egg with just salt cure?
Yes, depending on how well developed the eggs were in the fish. If the fish was very loose and ready to spawn, the result without river curing will be decently firm
Carpenter cloth works so so good. Quarter inch square.
What action are your salmon centerpin rods?
For the Pautzke, do you just use natural I guess and forgo the coloured options and rely on the spawn net for colour then? Also do you have a preference on king, coho, brown or trout eggs to catch steelhead?
Depends on time of year and what fish are spawning while your fishing, salmon and brown eggs in the fall and early winter, steel eggs in the spring
i cut the membrane with scissors then put it in spawn bags. i cover with borox detergent over night first. store in freezer and have caught fish on these 2 and 3 years later.
Was just wondering if you were going to put out an updated video for this. Perfect 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Do the eggs need to be salmon eggs or will using steelhead eggs work as well? Thanks in advance!
Steelhead eggs work great also!
I will have to give it a try. Love your videos, especially the bobber downs!!
Do spawn sacs work of coho too?
pink Himalayan salt works great for curing. Incase you've never tried it I highly recommend.

always river cure,by the logic soft beads wont smash fish since they cant break in the fish's mouth and I crush fish on soft beads
So as a fisherman who was told to preserve. We massage the eggs out. Throw the fish back in for another year. You also don’t do more than one.

I go and get eggs from the charter boats in July or very early August. A good way to get fresh bait even before fish go up the river
@@joshuavanderschaaf5145 Do u just show up at the docks or do you call around to find out if anyone has any?

Go to a fish cleaning station at a marina and wait for the charters to come in with them.
Tennis or bad mitten racket to scrape skein brother!

good job thank you
Use a cheap badminton racket to separate eggs rub over mesh eggs fall through
get 90 percent 10% pop
I'll have to try this!
@@FishFray works really good we can 50 to 60 cans a year the badminton rackets work awsome

Scribed great video bro
These eggs in my country would cost couple hundred dollars .He just using it for a bait lol
Eggs are absorbent🐟
First! Fish on!!! Ty!
Much easier with a spawnie
Doesn't seem like it could possibly be good to feed fish borax and fire cure... I mean I know I wouldn't eat either of those...
Not an expert ………Have you seen your bobber downs? Lol
I'm from the west coast, so it's a bit different, but river curing sounds like the worst thing one ever heard
