You tie all kinds of slip-nots. You are a true friend and guide. I wouldn't be surprised if you had a slipknot dongle on your escutcheon swinging beneath the banner of your motto.
I really like the J-bend. It has become one of my favorites for UL backpacking. I have never had it slip and it is easy to tie and untie, even with the Spider webbing. The Beckett I have had slip and it is hard to get it tight to avoid the slippage when first done, and I have to redo it to get my hammock perfect. With the J-bend, I know how much it will slip when tightening; slips only as much as the length of continuous loop through the Marlin spike. Nice to see you demonstrate both. They are a nice option. Thanks Shug!
Fantastic demo as always. Helps me to keep in mind the Becket Hitch is in effect a Sheet Bend to make sure its right. For the purpose, leaving a slippery tail The becket hitch it simply that same pattern applied to a closed loop/eye or hook (becket meaning the loop or eye). Cheers
Shug, thank you for all the great information. I've been watching a ton of your videos lately, and they've been very helpful for someone who knew nothing about hammock camping just a few days ago!
I just love your videos. So funny and informative. I am doing an AT thru hike soon and have been trying to shave gear weights. Learning the Becket hitch and switching out my looped strap for a plain flat strap helped me shave 7.5 more ounces! woohoo!
Ah, I see...as the blind man picked up his hammer and saw! I have been using the Becket hitch for some time now but heard about this the J-hitch--now I see how that works, too! Thank you kindly.
I have been hammocking a little over four years. Early on, I used what I call a "slippery sheet bend". As it turns out, I learned later that some call it the Beckett Hitch. Great knot. I also use a slippery Bowline to tie to the tree. For me, easier than threading the loop. Thanks for all the great hammock info.
It's some months i study about bushcraft, trekking and overall doing it with hammock. Found you some days ago and I'm totally in "love" with you ahahah you are so funny and enjoyable! 🍻🍻🍻
Shug I want you to know that I enjoy watching your videos very much, I watch the whole thing (2:50) from start right till the end. Who doesn't like good information followed by some fun? I went camping this past weekend and despite the check list for camping I forgot all my biners. I proceeded to use the J-Bend for both nights and it worked like a charm. I may forget my biners from now on just because who needs them when you know how to tie good knots. Your whole series for different ways to hang has been one of my favorite. time after time coming here to learn even when I already have a good setup it can always improve!
I like seeing options, but I'm sticking with the tree strap, Dutch Clip, Marlin Spike hitch, toggle and whoopie sling you taught me years ago. It allows for fine adjustment and when you stick with the same set up every time, you can do it when you're worn out or under the influence after a long day hiking. But I do enjoy your videos for all the different ways to hang.
Thanks, Shug. This series is great! We moved to Mexico and do not have access to amsteel unless a mission team brings some down with them, so it's great to learn about the other options. My son is using the Becket Hitch now on his chocolate table cloth hammock. Thanks again!
I’m going to do my best to remember these loops,,webbing,,,pinch it...grab tail end...and seek perfection in a imperfect world... then catch the continual loop and take a wee bow.....😬
You really saved my ass! I am a newbie in hammocking and will start my first hammock hike soon...no clue how to fix it. But now - I know. Thanks for showing.
I'm going to give the beckit hitch knot a try. I have titanium cinch buckels right riight now from Dutchgear and I just don't have much success with them. I've watched plenty of videos on them but they will go wonky on me or crooked and then ruin my nice web tree straps. I tried it again this weekend with a brand new strap, made sure they were nice and snug and straight and it slipped again and ruin a brand new strap. I'm done with the cinch strap. The beckit hitch did work, but I think I will give the whoopie string a try next time. Thanks for all your videos. '
for me, I will use these knots when I need to use a pair of trees that are too close together to accommodate the additional distance required for whoopie sling, marlin spike/toggle suspension. Thanks man!
Webbing from dutchware and using becket hitch is fraying the end of my amsteel continuous loop. I ordered the beattle buckles. I like knots and not so much hardware but I think it will make for quicker set up and adjustment.
Your Knot going to show every not? Or not going to show every knot? 😂 Seriously, lots of data out there, but you Shug, are more responsible than any other source for improving my hammock life! Cheers from Michigan!
I’ve had the stitching on the loop of my tree hugger that the whoppie sling is attached to blow out. I’ve also had the tension on the whoopie sling pop the knot off the Amsteel on the end that’s passed into and out of the core of the cord. In both cases, I fell to the ground at 3 am. So yeah, NEVER hang your hammock higher than you wish to fall, and it’s still good practice to not hang over a steep slope, sharp rocks, or any other surface that you would not want to fall onto. I’ve seen Dutchware Cinch Bugs and adjustable clips slip against wet webbing and slice a gash in the webbing in the process. After watching this video, I find myself thinking, why all the complexity? I suspect most experienced hammockers are hanging on trees 15-18 feet apart and know exactly the angle and tension they want to hang at. I think to reduce risk, ultimately you might be best off with two ten foot sections of 2 inch wide Venom webbing. Tie a figure eight loop on a bite at the end of each segment to use in securing the webbing to the tree. Then incorporate your J-Bend to attach the hammock. Done! No fancy hardware or extra lines that can fail you. Finally, I’ve migrated to 2-inch wide webbing because I saw so many instances of scarring from my webbing on trees, after I’ve taken my setup down. Outside of it being unsightly and against LNT, it doesn’t hurt trees that have their cambium layer deep underneath the outer bark (maple, oak). However, on other trees the damage is pronounced and, due to the soft nature of the bark, the tree may suffer adverse affects. I’m thinking trees like cedar. I wonder what your take is on this and if you’ve ever done any research into the matter. A video on what types of bark / trees to hang on and what types to avoid would be welcome, IMO.
Good thoughts you have. Thankee. I use a tree hugger and marlinspike knot/toggle for most of my hangs. Deep Winter I use a tree strap and cinch buckle. Wider straps when required. In my opinion tree bark varies. I'm no expert but when possible I try to hang off of trees with firmer bark. The trees I hang off in my backyard show vey little bark marks after all these years. Woodpeckers do way more damage! At this point as a backpacker I always look at trees in camps o see what bark damage exists. Hatchet chops, animal rubbing, carving, nails and such. Some bark seems to show all kind of marks. Same as looking at bare muddy ground where tents are pitched over and over. Nothing is perfect out there. I'm not convinced that a little bark marring affects the trees live span. Ever seen trees with fencing nailed to them and tree absorbing the fencing for years and the tree still thrives. Or even ropes and line. Complicated subject.
Shug, you are a precious commodity to Humanity. My only regret is not finding you here on YT until just recently. Now, I have my weeknights accounted for... watching your prior videos. I'm particularly amused at the fact you're a "circus junkie" (i.e. circus entertainer/employee). My Aunt works for Cirque Du Soleil and has done so since its inception in the Province du Quebec.
The Becket hitch, mmmm that's a purdy knot, mmhmm. Thought I would add it to my list of knots I can tie. When tying it, I realized it's actually a Sheet Bend (only slippery). Great to add to my list, but I'll just call it a Slippery Sheet Bend. Thanks Shug. P.S. watching an older video of yours I'm now a customer of Claxton!!! Thanks for that one too.
The j-bend was the first suspension knot I used (don't own any hardware), but I quickly decided that the becket hitch is much easier to adjust. I do sometimes dream of whoopie slings and cinch buckles, but so far my trusty becket hitch has done well by me.
You are the Vince Lombardi of the hammock! “Gentlemen, we will chase perfection, and we will chase it relentlessly, knowing all the while we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence.” ― Vince Lombardi Jr.
@@shugemery Got it down now. It's a fast set up and I'm taking 2 extra stakes to keep the line from slipping. Since they are new they want to do that, as I've plopped to the ground on the first tries.
Becket's hitch... it reminds me of a sheet bend. Technically, I think it's a sheet bend if you are tying ropes to ropes. But if you're tying a rope to a fixed eyelet, it's called becket's hitch.
Ordered a used Warbonett. It came with the end all knotted up with its Ridge line kind of wrapping around the knot. My guess is it was meant for another loop or a caribeaner to slip around that Ridge line...tge Ridge tgat wrapped the knot at the gathered ends of the hammock. I wonder if I undo that hammock knot (it has another little cord around it too), then I can run a cord or loop or whatever through it & gather it. I wonder the advantage of this knot tied at the ends of the Blackbird though.
More like a slippery marks head to me. FYI I always watch your videos all the way through. I have been wondering if I should go to continuous loops instead of fastening my whoolie straight to my hammock. Hummmm.........
That Becket Hitch looks useful. I've been using a marlin spike hitch, but simply using a carabiner to clip my hammock directly to the loop in the hitch. Easy, but not easily adjustable. The Becket looks almost like it gives you the function of descender rings in knot form. Have you noticed any issues with your continuous loop wearing or abrading from being tied directly to the webbing?
No wear that I see though I have had those cont loops on for a long time. Usually a dutch biner on them with my whoopie suspension. I don't use the becket that much....just showing this for suspension option purposes.
Shug I just fell...your work on here just popped up when I Googled a Beckett Hitch. I wish I could put up a picture, but I just baught used this Blackbird & it has the knots at the end that gather it...it looks very similar to what you have there. I'd better study the whole video. Yep...mooorree sllloowerr...lol.
It is a Wilderness Logics hammock. Owner died some years back so company is no longer. But you can get a black hammock.....dutchwaregear.com/product/11ft-netless/#fabric-layer-1
I dunno if I trust the people I'm camping with enough to leave the release hanging so temptingly. Practical jokers have to go potty in the middle of the night too.
I went from an easy-but-heavy rope ladder and carabiner to the becket hitch after the tree patrol started to require straps instead of my doubled rope. One big problem was that my Teton Firefly has a very stiff continuous loop of doubled strapping which makes it impossible to tie the knot properly with the loop nose protruding. As you noted, much hilarity ensued when my slippery new strap was loaded with my full weight. I have resolved this problem with a small toggle, which has worked well on several trips, even though I am really just tying the suspension strap to itself. Am I cheating death? I don't mind cheating, it's the death part which could be problematic.
@@shugemery Sometimes you know the answer, but just need to hear it from someone with an opinion you respect. I have found another strap material which works if I also tie the hitch "left-handed" to avoid the problematic splice on the continuous loop. On occasion, cheating may be fun. Usually it's not.
Shug, I have watched many, if not all, of your vids, some more than once. I don't ever recall seeing you hang from one tree and use a downed branch or something similar for the other end and some rope to hold it up... have you had to do that or experimented with it? Seems like where you go there are always plenty o' trees.
Hi there, nice videos keep them coming!. I got a Warbonnet BB xlc with Becket suspension. My question is the following: after a good night sleep, untie the becket hitch knot is very difficult to the point that I switched to a Marlin spike and use a toggle, does this happen to everyone? Should I switch to a whoopie sling?
One question Shug. A marlin pike hitch you hang on the knot, not on the toggle. The J bend seems to be hanging on the toggle, I.E. the webbing. Is that not contradictory? On a side note. I carry heavier webbing 1" polyester and use the becket. never slipped on me. I give it a hard yank before getting in the hammock then readjust if needed. Thank you for the great videos. I quit the rings because they slipped, now I know why!!
If the knot is wet and freezes, it’ll probably be a lot harder to release, right? Hardware would probably be the better option in cold, wet, and freezing conditions, right? I’m a novice and haven’t experienced those conditions with a hammock yet.
Could happen I suppose. May not be the thing in that weather. With whoopies I run my closed hand up and down it to cause friction to loosen it up if it seems frozen.
Quick question Shug: I'm thinking of using the Becket hitch to join the line coming from a Hennessy Hammock to a bare webbing strap (no loop) coming from the tree. Is it ok to do this, ie make a loop in the webbing by doubling it over, then tie the knot, or is a fixed loop on one end required? I sure hope that made sense, lol
Thanks for another great video shug! I do have a quick question: do these knots hold on a more slippery strap material? I have the dutchware uhmwpe straps.
I come back to this video every spring to relearn the knots
I often have to brush up on some of them myself!
lol. Here I am. Again. In Spring. (Glad I'm not the only one.)
Holy Smokes...after all these years I knew nothing...NOTHING I say, about these two knots. Wow. Thanks Shug!
Good knots. Always think I am gonna go this route but never do.

I really like the J-bend. It has become one of my favorites for UL backpacking. I have never had it slip and it is easy to tie and untie, even with the Spider webbing.
Never hang higher than you are willing to fall. Yessir!
@shugemery still hung up on the fact that you have a black hammock that's really cool. What's the brand, and model ?
It is a Wilderness Logics hammock. Owner died some years back so company is no longer.
But you can get a black hammock.....dutchwaregear.com/product/11ft-netless/#fabric-layer-1
Sammuel Beckett...maybe that old series Quantum Leap. He does CSI New Orleans now.
I have never watched a CSI. Or a Simpsons~~~~
super slow mo perfection

I dunno if I trust the people I'm camping with enough to leave the release hanging so temptingly. Practical jokers have to go potty in the middle of the night too.
That is funny. Have to pull mighty hard with you in the hammock. Might take two of them.....
Why do you prefer the marlin spike hitch toggle over these knots?
i just learned it first and still like it best.
Sounds like you have cheated death so far//:::::
@@shugemery Sometimes you know the answer, but just need to hear it from someone with an opinion you respect. I have found another strap material which works if I also tie the hitch "left-handed" to avoid the problematic splice on the continuous loop. On occasion, cheating may be fun. Usually it's not.
Shug, I have watched many, if not all, of your vids, some more than once. I don't ever recall seeing you hang from one tree and use a downed branch or something similar for the other end and some rope to hold it up... have you had to do that or experimented with it? Seems like where you go there are always plenty o' trees.
Haven't had too! Did do this though....ua-cam.com/video/2kPvSn5_T58/v-deo.html
Depending on your strap or rope it can be difficult. Personally I like whoopies.
shugemery thanks for your prompt answer!
I'm looking to use a becket hitch with my supention but what length should my suspention be if I have never been to where I'm headed?
I would err on the longer side until you get familiar with the area. Bigger trees go longer.
very nice....
I say thanks.
Webbing wont break like a weak toggle!
Ahhh....ring plummet!!!!
That makes perfect sense. Thanks.
Shugiddy-shug-shug-shuggster, I live in California and we have HUGE redwoods. Would you recommend hammocking with trees over 3 ft. in diameter?
Very long webbing I suppose. Or find smaller trees.
I think that will work. Only one way to find out.......
Basically a slippery half hitch onto the continuous loop, once it is passed through the continuous loop, correct ?
Pretty much but there if not tied correctly you will be on the ground.
@@shugemery, ok. Will DEFINITELY check that.
At almost 270#, I do not want to end up falling.
Thank you, Sir !
Sector 7, checking in.
Oh, that's what those are called used em both at various times, but not hammocking, and just sort of came up with it on the fly when i did
I too do knots I cannot name.
What is the hammock that is in this video? Thanks for another great video!

Thanks Shug
Y'elcome.
What suspension techniques do you prefer for extreme cold where manual dexterity is limited?
I switch to cinch buckles. Descender rings would work well too.
Cinch buckle video coming soon.....
Thanks for another great video shug! I do have a quick question: do these knots hold on a more slippery strap material? I have the dutchware uhmwpe straps.
It should. Could be harder to get the knot out. Only one way to find out.......
@@shugemery very true! I'll give it a shot. Thanks again
Personally, i like the sheet bend.
Pretty much same as the becket.
I think whoever invented all these knots , must be a real knot-job 😂
Do you agree ? 🤤
Rim shot!!! Ba-boom.
Ah! Your daughter inherited your ginger hair.
And how!!!!
