Awesome seeing these old rigs! I grew up in one back in 1970-75 In Hollywood CA, after his return from Vietnam, we went all over CA, AZ, Baja. Lots of great memories...VW!
*Thanks for taking me almost 60 years back in time, where I started as a 13 y old kid, having my [adoptive] dad teaching me the magic of driving, in our grayish-beige, '62 split window transporter!* (What I remember most vividly, is driving _alone_ - at fourteen, on a crispy night, on snow covered Norwegian country roads, with the snowflakes in the headlights coming towards me, _ohhh,_ what memories! . . . ) Thanks for sharing you guys! 🙏
I've owned four of those darn things, had my 63 down most of the bad dirt roads of Baja in search of waves and tromped all over Australia in a 77. One day I met a Landcruiser guy in the eighties, bought one and never looked back. That video brings back memories and some residual ptsd
It's fantastic to see so many of these old busses still out and about. I still miss my old 1966 bus that took me half way round Australia and i still kick myself for ever having sold it now the ones still around are stupid prices. Thaanks for taking the vid
GREAT video! Wonderful O'l buses. I had a mint 71 hardtop Westy that we drove up Thomas Mt in So Cal...pretty rough road, took our time and when we arrived at the top there was a Jeep Jamboree going on. They were not to stoked to see a VW bus make it all the way to the top. My favorite vehicle. Thank you for the memories!
What a beautiful video, I belong to WetWesties and we do campouts 1-2 times a month all year. Many Bus's and Vanagon's, I am owned by STORMY an 87 Vanagon Westfalia Camper and have had her for 14 years. Thank You for putting together such a beautiful and interesting movie. ☯️
I had a 1977 bus sure was a fun vehicle. When I was like 22 years old I took off one summer on a cross country camping trip from Pa to Montana and back it was the time of my life. One of those things you can do when you are young and have no responsibilities to speak of. This reminded me of that trip and sent me looking at old photos. Thanks
This video stumbled into my feed, somehow. I ended up watching it to its conclusion. I found it amazing that you could get this many old VW buses together in one spot and then take them offroad. Great comaraderie! I almost never see any on the road. I always thought these had been gobbled up by collectors and restored, yet her are some that look beat, but damn, you guys are having fun with them. Maybe add a little voice over where everyone is pulled to the side of the road explaing the reason why i.e. "We stopped because the engines needed to cool", and/or add something at the end presenting the number of break downs and what they were as well as how many started and how many finished. Who drove the farthest. It would be easy to make a documentary on this event. I am just amazed you guys could climbe all those mountain roads and not overheat. Loved the video.
I had a 74 bus camper. The top popped up for additional sleeping and had a fold down bed in the rear. Bought it used in the 90's. Still had bug screens for all the front windows. Drove it to Nothern Upper Michigan and Canada to go camping.Since it had all the engine weight on the rear wheels, I could drive it on many 2 track old logging roads, it had good traction. 2000 CC engine, automatic.
I don't know what it is about those little VW buses, but they are so damn cool and I've kinda always wanted one.. I had no idea that you guys grouped up like this, which adds a whole new layer of nerdy coolness to this whole thing it's really got my considering picking one up!!

Ca,ped in the deserts there, offloaded small mountain byways... jeep trails and mammoth lakes during some snow storms.. was an auto!!.. not a stick even. but died a slow death n gave it up for couple used cars before getting a 07 tacoma reg. cab 4x4, 2.7L stick! n a camper back..larger tires, n some extras that I still drive, w only 100k miles... love that truck! but miss the Van!! lol. prior to the Vanagon... had a 73 FJ=40... lift larger tires lift n 3 gas tanks n lights... good internal heater. camped midwest winter n simmer off-road!! khaki with white top and wagon wheel rims... classic!! 327 swapped out for 6 mated to the stock 3 Spd... from orig. owner. MISS that rig as well!! a beauty as the 90 Vamagan .. and the 07 tacoma will have another 100 plus miles till it disintegrates! only new vehicle I bought in CA. now in MN! I’d love a bus one day. I’ve owned a lot of cool cars but I’ve never acquired the one I really want and would buy in order to keep. Someday soon hopefully
I grew up in Dunsmuir and Klamath Falls and the washboard on those dirt roads will bounce your rig right off the road if you don’t watch it, I don’t want to imagine the damage it did to all your suspension links and bushings.
During the '70s I had a'59 single cab with a 40 horse, a '65 with a 1600 and a '68'.Traded the '68 for a '65 Ford 1/2 ton with a 390 and three 20-gallon gas tanks.
Where I live, Palo Alto California, You don't see many split window VWs. But when I do see one more often than not it's been restored like something from Gabriel Iglesias garage. But you wouldn't take a show car on a trip like this. My guess is that in the future the unrestored vans will be a rarity.

Somehow the best and worst vehicle ever built. How could something so clunky be so cool? I had a ‘57, a ‘64 with (27?) windows and a cloth sunroof. The car was fantastic…from the window up. My family took a road trip and always parked on a hill so we could push start it.

There's no denying that the vintage VW vans have a very special allure.

This was one of the best video yet , Looks like a lot of fun man .
I found it very interesting, here in Brazil there could also be expeditions like this.
During the '70s I had a'59 single cab with a 40 horse, a '65 with a 1600 and a '68'.Traded the '68 for a '65 Ford 1/2 ton with a 390 and three 20-gallon gas tanks.
More VWbusses than in the whole of Germany
Man that looks like such fun!!!!

How do you know winter is finnaly over? Vw drivers aren't scraping the inside of the windshield. Still have my 65 bug 45 years later.
The vibe is real
Since he has recently passed gotta say it 'you got yourselves a convoy '

I’d like to know the route you took. I recognize all of it but it seems like they are out of order in my head.
We usually start south of Clearlake California and just drive on a bunch of fire roads through the Mendocino forest towards mount shasta
Where did they start and where they going
Started in Mendocino county California and going to mount Shasta
20-30 ни у кого ума не хватило, что надо ехать медленно)))

The road looks pretty sketchy in places. I'm not so sure I'd want to risk it if I didn't have 4 wheel drive.
These are better than 4x4 if you know how to drive.
