Honestly, Ristar was the character that made me realize Sega wasn't just the "Sonic company" and let me enjoy all of the wacky stuff the company has done :D
My first introduction to this game was unlocking it in Sonic Mega Collection. As a kid, I was so bummed out by the fact that it was just some 'random' game instead of more sonic. Nowadays it's become one of my favorite games on the sega genesis lmao
That's funny, that's literally how it went for me as a kid! At first I wasn't interested because "eww that's not Sonic" but then one day I got bored and tried it out and oops, I ended up loving the game and now it's one of my favorite games! It's still a very good game.
0:37 Now let's star-t. Ha, gotcha. Ristar's designers need to learn from Sonic Team and remember there may come a day when someone challenges themselves to beat your platform game without any platforming. Gotta cater to them as well, maybe give Ristar an invincible sentient asteroid sidekick who can carry him if he doesn't feel like moving.
This game is unbelievablyy underrated for how polished and well made it is I am so glad that one of my favorite content creator's is shedding some light onto this wonderful game Keep up the good work man 👍
I've made a TAS that also tackles this challenge (ua-cam.com/video/7S2V0b9IQo0/v-deo.html) and there are some jumps that can be avoided: 1-Boss - you can grab the walls to climb it, but the timing is precise 2-1 - You can climb practically any wall using the grab move, and that applies to the walls that are close to the water 2-2 - I dont think swimming should be counted 3-1 - you can do the miniboss if you're extremely lucky 3-2 - you can climb the pole, and then grab the ceiling to move to the end 4-1 - if you leave the metronome in a place where ristar can grab it while dropping from the platform, you can throw it to the platform, skipping a jump. you can grab the metronome while jumping out of the monkey bars. Wall climbing also saves so many jumps its ridiculous. but 2 of the jumps are actually impossible 4-2 - those jumps are skippable with wall climbing once again 5-2 - there are no improvements, i just wanted to say that this level sucks 6-1 - that jump can be skipped with wall climbing 6-2 - the second room is actually possible jumpless, if you grab the enemy to get up to the platform, if the grab killed the enemy, and the gem is close enough. you can skip that moving platform jump, and that also aplies to the room with the multiple platforms. the strat to doing room 8 is pretty complicated, so I recommend watching the video Overall, you only actually need 20 jumps! 2 in 4-1, 13 in 5-2, and 5 in 6-2, but you still had a great attempt! Edit: I've discovered a save in 4-1 that saves 1 A press in the any% run, and 2 in the 100% run!
I still can't believe that they managed to made the game so colorful, more than two decades passed and Ristar is still one of the best looking 2D platformers ever.
Great video! I need more people to talk about Ristar, and do things like this! I love the game and it's soundtrack, mor people need to experience it! Also I've never played Dynamite Headdy, but since you mentioned it's a rival or parallel to Ristar, I'll try it out someday.
Nice to see you make a video of my Other favorite Sega Genesis game besides Dynamite Headdy! It was also more enjoyable to watch the entirety of the playthrough, this time counting the total jumps! I cracked laughing when 'the' gap just before the first boss prevented you from advancing, as well as the bunch of jumps you had to do at the end of the snow ice level. It must have been so annoying lol. However, there were some really nice moments when I didn't think it would actually be possible to skip some of the parts but you surprised me, such as in the fire world. It was a really satisfying video. I wish you also made an "awards" just like you did at the end of the Dynamite Headdy video, but oh well, that's you spoiling us :)
God, I’m glad there’s none of that "waffle found host" comments in the section. Anyways, great old school gaming content, git. I’m particularly a fan of videos without voice but it’s generally a treat to see your videos with voice every now and then.
There was one, but I deleted it. I can tell already it's going to be the worst meme ever because there's literally no reason it gets posted and that's what makes it funny, apparently.
All levels in this challenge (MikeWillPlays proved some are possible): Planet Flora/Neer - Light Plain: Possible Planet Flora/Neer - Dark Woods: Possible Riho Is Coming (Riho Boss): Possible Planet Undertow/Leatow - Blue Water: Possible Planet Undertow/Leatow - Lost Palace: Possible* Ohsat Attack (Ohsat Boss): Possible Planet Scorch/Onaclove - Flare Surface: Possible Planet Scorch/Onaclove - Under Factory: Possible Adahan Fall (Adahan Boss): Possible Planet Sonata/Neuos - Du-Di-Da: Impossible Planet Sonata/Neuos - Dance-Dance!: Possible Awaueck Sing (Awaueck Boss): Possible Planet Freon/Elykiki - Pure White: Possible Planet Freon/Elykiki - Splash Snow: Impossible Itamor Lunch (Itamor Boss): Possible Planet Automation/Rewope - Law? Chaos?: Possible Planet Automation/Rewope - Brain Maze: Impossible Uranim Power (Uranim Boss): Possible Castle Greedy - Kings Tower: Possible Inonis Doll (Inonis Boss): Possible Siek Kaiser (Final Boss/Kaiser Greedy): Possible * Impossible if you count fast swimming as jumping Only three levels are truly impossible (unless you count Lost Palace, which makes four), with Splash Snow needing the most jumps to complete.
I thought you weren't going to do voice over here because you said that you didn't enjoy doing it in your Dynamite Headdy video. Was doing the voice over any more enjoyable here?
That 'Hasta La Vista, Baby" bit just reminded me of Team Star. Would Ristar have to do the weird hand movements when saying Hasta La Vistar if he joined them? probably, haha
3:20 yeah I expecting that this gap in ground will mess you. I played in Ristar many times and I think this gap is just for design style to make view less blant Also, 5-2 almost always glitched on my cartridge at start
I do realise now that some platforms shown in this video that require a jump are kinda useless. Why are those here ? Those do not provide any challenge (except here...). Just take a platform at the beginning of the level, you must jump. No enemy before, no enemy after. Is it there because "it makes the player press button" ? In this case, can we consider it is a lazy level design ? If anybody want to share their point of view I'm interested !
Since you already did a minimum jumping video for Dynamite Headdy, can you try to beat Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Mischief Makers, Silhouette Mirage and Sin and Punishment without jumping? They were all made by the same developer as Dynamite Headdy.
I really like the idea of a music themed level, which stands out among the standard grass, water, ice, etc. stages. It's not something that, say, Mario does often when it comes to level variety
Honestly, Ristar was the character that made me realize Sega wasn't just the "Sonic company" and let me enjoy all of the wacky stuff the company has done :D
And then they turned into the "Sonic Company."
@@Randomguy-ih5sd Huh?
@@zap648 It's a joke. Look how many Sonic games they've made compared to any other of their franchises in recent time.
@@Randomguy-ih5sd In the last five years?
@@Randomguy-ih5sd At least Nintendo tried to acknowledge they make more than just Mario games.

Wasn't it Sonic Team that developed Ristar, though?
Or am I mistaken?
@@OhCrapI_He it was developed by the people who went on to become Sonic Team, to my knowledge.
Love this game, I give a big up to Bpblu for introducing me to this game & still love watching his playthrough of this game to this day, RIP man! 🙏
this really makes me happy, ristar is one of my favourite sega characters :)
I love Ristar. Thanks for making this, I wish more people would talk about this gem!
6-2 has a speedrun trick with a torn wall which lets you get to the teleporter with just only one jump instead of two
This game is unbelievablyy underrated for how polished and well made it is

13:08 Oh come on he's just doing a little dance he ain't hurting anyone.

I'm going to go by Mario Odyssey rules as what counts as a jump: pressing the button underwater does not, pressing it at the surface does.
finally a ristar video, i hope people make more challenges like that to this game
This was really well done also Ristar is a pretty underrated character, would be cool to see him make a good comeback someday
These challenges are AWESOME!!
Im gonna subtract one from the final score for the underwater jump button, which acts instead to propel you forward
Ayy it's my boy Ristar. Love this game, was too young to play it when it came out but I loved it on the Wii Virtual Console.
Yoo thanks for picking my idea!!!
Congrats on having it picked!
21:45 You could've also used the Star Handle to avoid the enemies. That's the reason why it was placed there lol

I bet the flashing fire was supposed to be some sort of weird transparency effect, flickering on and off to seem like it mixed into the background

@Makaibros i'm also grateful that stupid meme does not exist in this video
24:51 Ristar definitely plays Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
I love ristar! :)
Fun fact :this video temporarily disappeared from my subscription box, it's back now. I just think that was wierd.
I don't think I actually knew you could "jump" underwater, and got stuck at that damn turbine that gave you trouble. Now I feel like a real dip.
I can't beat this game WITH jumping.
I'm kinda shocked you didn't make a joke about the blue orbs looking like puyos.
3:32 That's what she said
I was playing Ristar when this notification appeared. Leave my mind alone
3:33 we’ve all thought of that some point in time
This is so unfair ristar is so forgetted but it might be cus it was released at the end of the sega gensis life span😢😢😢
16:19 wtf is that glitchy mess

I already made that joke bro
