  • I cobbled together over $32,000 of audio gear into an All-Star System featuring some BIG names in the hi-fi business , and a Goodwill find. What brands and gear did I select. How did it sound? And was I ready for it. Am I a luxury system person, or am I just a mid-fi guy at heart? There is only one way to find out! Thanks for watching!

Prioritizing spending on our passions is always worth it if your basic needs are met, but knowing when enough is enough and reaching that level of contentment requires a lot of maturity.

I'll spend more on the analog side, because that side isn't likely to be obsolete as quickly. On the digital side, I want each stage separate so I can replace stages like Legos.

I couldn’t keep up with my rich friends in the Hifi competition. I gave up and walked away. Many years later, I’m putting together mostly vintage gear and loving the results. It’s about the music and your enjoyment of it.
Cheers from Bastrop Bob. Keep up the good work.

"Enjoy the music!" I think you nailed it. Like you, I cannot justify spending that kind of money, and hear "too much" whi h can distract from the enjoyment. I've got about $8000 in a system that I really enjoy. I second your Klipsch comment. Heresy IV's sound great to me.

I used to think $10k was way too much, and when you find a pair of speakers or amp that has your sound you're 1/2 way there. Mid-Fi is a great place to be - it matches the sound I relate to from the 80's. Component by component is my approach, and if I find an item I believe will help and I can make it work I'll give it a shot. Testing and comparing components sounds fun. I like finding items that sound good but am not a fan of unboxing, moving, cabling, and general disappointment a high percentage of the time. Small items can have meaningful impact on quality, cost is less, and they're easier to revert if desired. Figuring out what works for each of us to keep our minds calm & happy is a personal item we each get to nail down

In at around $6k: Fluance RT85 with AT540vm headshell/stylus into Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 phono stage, Emotiva TA1 into Emotiva XPA-2 gen 3 power amp, WiiM Pro streamer, and a pair of Polk R700 speakers. This is the final iteration of quite a bit of switching out and upgrading. It's mid-fi...........and sounds phenomenal.

Yeah, You were spot on with this one. I have Conrad Johnson Preamps and amp, vintage and new. They can be in that $10K+ price range. They reveal EVERYTHING, both amazing beauty and the warts! I also have our beloved Forte IVs. It means my sources have to be really good. My turntable is glorious, thank God. I upgraded my 10 y/o $1500 Rega RP6 to a much higher level because of how flat it was sounding, including the Rega P10 tone arm (RB3000) and Sumiko Starling MC cart, double plinth and more . My DAC is great (a Denafrips Terminator 12th) but my digital sources suck (IfI Zen stream, 10 y/o Cambridge Blue ray/SACD/ Media player) . All told, including cables, switches, linear power supplies etc.., I'm in it for $32-35K! I am saving up for a 5-6K streamer! Nuts! While I can spend the money eventually, it is not wise at my income and stage of life. And yet, that is the plan anyway. If you can live with your sound system as is, after having heard the Moon Audio stuff, consider that a gift!!! If you find you half to buy that equipment, you get NO judgment from me! LOL! Enjoy the music no matter what!

In my current journey in the audio world I’m all in at around $6,500 and truly love my current system at the moment and for many years to come. I started out with powered Fluance bookshelf speakers then took it up 10 notches to… Arendal 1723 THX towers, Yamaha R-N1000A stereo receiver, AT-LP1240-USBXP turntable, (2) 15 inch subs by Starke Sound, Sony CD Player, Douk audio phono pre amp, a pair of KEF Q150 bookshelf speakers, External power amp by Audiophonics (class D with NCore technology) looking to get an external DAC and hear great things on the J2 with Sparkos op amps, and get a better cartridge for my turntable. Love the journey and researching and wishing but most of all love the hobby and the music 👍 thank you for all you do love your channel!!

This video brings up an important point and the car analogy is apt - I experienced this myself recently when I finally got, for me, a holy grail luxury vehicle. Every time I drive it, I scrutinize its performance, terrified (ok, not really, but something like that) something is going to go wrong. Never worried about my Toyota Highlander lol. Audio gear I think would be the same. I've begun an upgrade path across all my components and I do find myself doing analytic liste ING almost more than I do pure enjoyment listening, questioning whether this or that component is performing the way I want and how it could be better.

I'm with you, Bob. Especially regarding streamers, which go out of data almost as fast as smartphones. Disposable tech is what I call them. For streamers, software is more important than hardware.
DAC technology has been changing pretty fast too...especially regarding filters. Some may disagree, but we've been asymptotically approaching 100% transparency in digital to analog technology for a while now. The best $200 DAC today outperforms the best $2,000 DAC from a decade ago. Easily. Unless one is after boutique or stylized sound and cosmetics, it's no longer necessary to spend thousands of dollars on a DAC to achieve full transparency.
Change comes more slowly to analog components. It still makes sense to spend majority of an analog system's budget on the transducers: loudspeakers and phono cartridge. A top-of-the-line loudspeaker from twenty years ago won't be embarrassed by modern designs at around the same price (adjusted for inflation), but there are significant differences. Modern designs tend to be less efficient but are tuned for more even response, both on and off-axis. The use of computer-designed waveguides to better match driver dispurisions at the crossover frequency has been a major advancement. It will be interesting to see how loudspeaker and phono cartridge technology changes over the next decade. e.g., laser pickups?
Amplifiers and preamplifiers have not changed much, ignoring the addition of digital inputs on some models. Power amplifiers used to have a gain of around 30 dB. Many still do, but a fair number of modern models are between 10 and 20 dB. Digital sources have a noise floor that's at least 30 dB lower than analog, so I believe this change in power amp gain is to achieve a lower noise floor end-to-end. And, it works! As a result, we have lower attenuation or even some positive gain from the preamp. Many modern DACs have a native output of 5V instead of 2V or 4V, which also helps compensate for reduced gain downstream.
My point in all of this is that when folks spend a higher portion of their disposable income on audio gear, its reasonable to expect greater longevity. The risk with longevity is potentially missing out on benefits from advancements in technology and design. It, therefore, makes sense to optimize audio investments by spending more on component types that tend to evolve slowly.
In your system, a $13k streamer does not make much sense to to me. I know that you love your Klipsch Forte loudspeakers, but if you had $20k burning a hole in your pocket, upgrading to a modern loudspeaker like the Perlisten S7t would take your system and room to a completely different level.

One of life's harder lessons ... Price does not translate to quality.
I used to service a number of high end systems, one over $100k and at the end of the day, they were not especially better than my $1,500 system. Sure they had more raw power, of course they were all dressed up fancy, but ultimately the listening experience is no better.
The components inside those super spiffy casings are the same stuff that gets used in equipment at 1/4 the price ... the same transistors, the same chips, the same general designs. Most of what you pay for in the "high end" world is fancy cases, names and small production runs... often attached to exorbitant markups as the company is trying to get a year's worth of income from a couple of dozen sales.
Yes, there really is such a thing as "Audiophile Markup"... and it's likely to be half or more of the cost of these so-called "high end" systems.

Im what i call a blue collar audiophile. Mid-fi is the perfect balance of fun, good sounds and contentment for me. There's so much available from vintage gear through the newly democratized high levels of sound quality coming from brand new mid-fi gear today (though im mostly a vintage guy. Vintage up until the start of BPC gear)
I can rotate a pair of speakers out into my shop for storage for a while and not be concerned about thr perfect humidity.
My 100lb. dog can thwack her tail into a woofer without me having a heart attack.
And if my ego ever pops up and trues to get involved, I still know that I have better sound quality than any house around me for miles.
Btw i love the term "fun-fi". I play around whith that type of stuff for my wife's desktop and her office. She loves the sound and i get to play around with all the little new gadgets without having to be as critical as i would if they were in my studio/listening room.

You touch on for me is the biggest pitfall of Hi-End components. The sense of the hyper real, which when I auditioned Sim/Moon gear also gave me. I loved the inner detail the amp and CD player would draw out of my recordings, alas it was not my cup of tea. Since I like Hard Rock and Gothic Metal the products would shed too much light on harsh the top end on the Genre's recordings. Settled for perhaps a not quite so resolving but more forgiving sound for my main rig. Wish you all the best :)

Now THAT is a nice 2 channel system Bob. I say if you feel you can appreciate the subtleties and nuances that come from such amazing gear then no, it's not too much for you. Budget is another issue altogether though. I say it all comes together in a Venn diagram of budget, aesthetics, sound quality and features where the components that fit in the sweet spot are the ones best "for you" being whoever the decision maker is.
Too much for me for sure due to the amount of upper range hearing I've lost I wouldn't be able to appreciate that kind of audio performance anyway.

Amazing video. I definitely relate to your approach. I was almost lost to the infinite search for better sound quality (with no crazyness involved, tough), but than I slapped in the face and woke up to reality. The majority of my collection is CD and regular LP (none of that Mo Fi expensive stuff). I just want equipment that allows me to enjoy the music I love. If it has low noise, no distortion and a decent soundstage, I am a happy man. It's will always be all about the music for me. The gear its just the means to an end. I rather go to a Caribbean island on holidays with my AirPods and listen to Lee Scratch Perry and Peter Tosh all day, than safe the money to buy the most recent chip DAC.

It seems the depreciation on reasonably nice audio gear is pretty gnarly. I feel like the sweet spot is 5-10 years old. I've got just under 10K in my system and if you'd bought all of it new it would have been double that. I got an above average deal, in particular, on my Kef Reference 1s.

I have always avoided tube amplification, because they are less durable in most designs, plus mid Fi is better than ever. When I saw made in Russia printed in English on the tubes, I had to wonder how easy replacement would be.
I mitigate the cost of equipment by not churning through it. I find the weak link in my system, upgrade that , and then live with the happy results for years, or at least until I have both the means and desire to attack the resultent new weak link. now, as an old man, I am just finishing up my end of the road system, once I upgrade the amplification to the quality of the other stuff gathered over time. .
besides, since listening to a recording of a past musical event can never be more than an illusion of that past event, one needs to decode on how far one is willing to chase that illusion, since human hearing did not evolve to tell you the truth anyway. how you think something sounds is your reality, the process is only subjective.

Records, yup… I still get 2-3 per month but I managed to build a decent system over the years of Yamaha and Technics that should last me for decades longer. I might add a good and relatively affordable streamer at some point like the Eversolo A6 but not just yet.

    @brunohebert1351 4 місяці тому

That's the main issue with those systems/components that are "too good". If your recording sucks, well, it will suck big time but if it's great, it will shine.
Makes me think that you nearly need to have 2 systems, one for the great recordings and one (forgiving) for the bad recordings (because we want to enjoy those too)
But extra cost, extra space etc...
therefore it's nice to be in a middle ground where bad recording don't sound bad and great recordings sound pretty good.
my main system is around $3000 all vintage (McIntosh, Boston Acoustics, Kenwood turntable, Marantz SACD) no streamer or Dac.
I'm on the hunt for a proper streamer that can stream from my NAS via wifi including my DSD files.
If it has a DAC even better but not necessary, it's easy to add a DAC after.
(BTW, any suggestions are welcome as I haven't been able to find one for a decent price I mean ;-) )

I was surprised and a bit horrified when I counted up the list prices of all my gear in my main system and it was well north of £30,000.
Now that's been built up over years and I buy a lot second hand or especially ex dem, but still. And I am comfortably off in retirement but have never been wealthy. Thank god my wife is a secular saint. It's amazing how quickly it adds up in this hifi game.
Then if you add my second system, my vintage gear and my AV system... Gulp.
Don't regret any of it, though. And because a lot of it was bought below list, I could sell it for close to what I paid if the bailiffs came a knockin'.

I have a feeling you'd love my Denafrips Pontus II DAC/Hermes DDC combo. It sounds like you're sitting in the venue/studio. Regardless of whether you're listening to CD or high-rez flac on your streamer, it sounds like I'm listening to music. It's enormously detailed and warm in character, transients are lightening fast, the highs have air, it soundstage approaches that of the Soundsmith Aida cartridge and like the Soundsmith, it's utterly relaxing to listen to for hours and hours thanks to it's somewhat forgiving nature. I also have an Oppo UDP-205 that has eight ESS Sabre DACs for the class A, balanced stereo output section that provides a ruthlessly accurate playback of all disc formats. With the Oppo, if the recording engineers decided to slip in vocals recorded in a sound booth instead of the open studio the rest of the tracks were recorded in, it's about as subtle and getting slapped in the face. With the Denafrips stack, it's clearly audible if you're looking for it, but it doesn't pound your face and ears with it so it doesn't brutally take your attention away from the performance, itself. Mind you, the whole shebang is under $3500 with the Wiim Pro Streamer (which is run through the Hermes DDC digital processor via coax). If you get some time out of your busy schedule, contact Alvin Chee at Vinshine Audio to see if he can send you both for review. Denafrips has a factory service center in Texas for all repairs in the USA. By the way, Denafrips DACs are fully discrete R2R ladder DACs. There's about a thousand laser trimmed 0.01% tolerance surface mount resistors in a four channel array as the Pontus II's fully balanced or quad-balanced as some manufacturers describe. And Denafrips products are deceptively heavy for their size and are built like tanks.

I've pretty much have stuck to Vintage Pioneer gear 78-80. About 7 grand including some servicing on things that were not shipped to me properly. I like my system. The idea of having 32k in gear doesn't appeal to me at all.

I never found any speaker from the Klipsch Heritage series shouty or harsh. I do find them boring. Klipsch just doesn't do it for me. I've tried to like the Heritage series, including the non-Heritage RF-7. No dice. Wish I could dissect it and give you specifics. I've kept my ADS 1230s for over 40 years. Back in 1983, I a/bed them against the Klipsch Cornwall. No contest. No disrespect to Klipsch lovers. To each his own.

The lower spec TI /Burr-Brown dac in Rotel products with only 100 db signal to noise ratio, outperforms the Geshelli Labs J2 AKM dacs. Better bass, sound stage, air..so much better. It not that TI Burr-Brown is good or bad, as higher spec chip in latest Bluesound Node sounds terrible. You may not think it sounds terrible, but if you listen to a dac in the latest 15 series Rotel, makes the other sound like junk, and it’s the cheapest, worst spec dac chip. Go figure. But that is in a $1700 pre-amp. But those other dacs pumped into that same pre-amp sound lifeless in comparison, mostly for lack of bass, detail in bass, and too much detail in mids and highs…like Klipsch speakers sound to me.

But isn’t that what the artist intended? Isn’t that what the sound/ master engineer intended? Or is your system at this point studio sound that is showing you everything about that recording? Have you gone too far up the chain that it sounds like you sitting in the recording booth? Great discussion…

  • @lsaideOK
    @lsaideOK 4 місяці тому +1

Isn't it about the music? And not the gear? If you enjoy the music less, then the gear is not doing it for you. Whatever the price. At the low-fi level, it's probably the distortion, the way the system adds stuff to the music. And at this level, it's the way you are hearing more of the recording rather than the music. I think there are two other factors: guilt over spending so much for a want rather than a need; and how much the cost is a percentage of your overall assets. If you have a billion, 32,000 is nothing.

What is the world coming too when owners of McIntosh gear, and $2000 turntables are low fi…maybe you said mid fi…either way. I have probably 8K in my 2 channel system and have to sulk around acting like it is a lo fi system. Meanwhile the world is listening via portable Bluetooth speakers.

In many ways, you're a better reviewer than that buddy of yours, Randy.
In other ways, not so much.
$32K worth of hi fi gear and Bob chooses, as a source, Tidal STREAMING service, a COMPRESSED source. SMH.
As far as the Klipsch go, the TWEETER sound reaches your ears BEFORE the woofer sound does. This is EASILY seen in a simple step response test Bob.
So yeah, they are kinda shouty, in your face......they are DESIGNED that way. It's ok to LIKE them, but they destroy time and phase, which makes them NOT audiophile speakers (in my book)
BTW, Randy HATED the Moon gear. Pissed him off he said. Reason he started his channel of audio LIES was because Moon audio "pissed him off"
In reality, Randy was clueless as to WHY the gear sounded bad. I told him why. I can explain it, but can't make that fool understand it.
