  • This video will show you the basic steps on how to remove the rear apron off your classic beetle. This is done to make engine installation and removal much easier, which is nice for people who swap out engines at least once a year (I run an engine with heater boxes during the winter and one without during the warmer months). This isn't really meant to be a tutorial on how to do any kind of metal fabrication, just how to get the apron off if you want to make it removable or replace it, etc.
    This job takes about an hour and a half for the experienced mechanic and you can do it easily with the engine in the car. If you doubt that I'd be happy to take a couple hundred bucks off your hands in a bet - it wouldn't be the first time.
    After you remove your apron it goes without saying that you need to protect the bare metal you have exposed in various places. Countersink, sand, prime where necessary to stop rust.

    Nice, clear video! I would like to do this on my Bug. What tool did you use in your Dremel to cut the inside "ears"?

      Thanks, but I got it done already. I had a cutter like the one you linked to, and it seemed the most likely one to work, so I used it. As you said to Lee Elliott below, I am keeping it on just with the fender bolts, and so far it has been secure. Anyway, I wouldn't have attempted this without your video. It helped greatly to show what problems were to be expected.

    Hi. How did you attach the new apron? Quick release?

    • @marbleknight

      I've done it several ways, quick release DZUS fasteners, regular bolts, and my favorite: Nothing. For the past year I have been running one that is held in by nothing other than the rear fenders. The last three bolts around the backsides of the rear fenders will hold the apron in there after you tighten them down. It's like putting the apron in two vises and it is NOT coming out of there, come Hell or high water!

    What is that you covered your hood vents with??

    • @marbleknight
      @marbleknight  8 років тому

      Just a magnetic strip. If I'm out driving and it looks like it's going to rain I will slap it on there to keep water out of the engine bay. I don't drive with it on there though.

      +marbleknight so is there a overheating problem when they are covered? So rain really gets in the engine ?

    • @marbleknight

      I never tried driving it with the vents covered so I'm not sure about the overheating. You could argue that the earlier models didn't have decklid vents at all, but VW must have put them there for a reason. As for whether the rain comes in through the vents, the answer is absolutely. The vents are right over the engine with nothing but air in between.

      I used the fiber-reinforced dremel discs.
