Why Android Doesn't Have FaceTime
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 тра 2024
- Back in 2010 Steve Jobs introduced FaceTime, and declared the technology would be open source. Meaning any company could include the feature on their device, including Android. But as we know today, FaceTime is only available on Apple products. So what happened?
Well, after FaceTime was released, Apple was sued by a company called VirnetX. Who offers video conferencing and domain name services with a focus on security. - Наука та технологія

@@shaheersks1could you explain for me what difference between Google meet and Google duo? Why Google have 2 video call app.
@@shaheersks1Google Duo is now Google Meet. Google will change it again at some point like they do with most of their stuff.

Can’t android users use FaceTime through through the shared link feature that was introduced in iOS 15?
@@ddylan4catsit’s a way worse experience, you’re better off using WhatsApp or other third party apps

Definitely they can.

I hate Patent Trolls with a passion. They legitimately make society worse.
They should be forced to cease operations but well, I suppose the responsible government just wanted to help scam Apple. The law system in the US doesn‘t seem to be up to modern standards as in no way, 330m$ in damages could have been caused by some wrong P2P implementation.
Aren‘t those who claim damaged obliged to prove them in the US? In Germany they certainly are.
Keep crying 😂😂😂
I recommend to remove your comment.
@@DavidKen878 why? There is a difference between patent trolls abusing potentially corrupt law systems like the US one and legitimate patent holders like Sony or Fraunhofer _which actually have entire research teams dedicated_ and therefore have the legitimation to license their tech and patent trolls which can, with the help of a underdeveloped country, just file for damages which haven‘t been caused.
@ And that relates to this video how?
Patenting peer to peer is crazy

you didn’t mention that on iOS 15/ MacOS 12 they added FaceTime links that you can use in a browser. It’s still technically exclusive to apple devices since it’s not installed but at least you can use it on android now
Google Meet, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc...: 🗿
It's beyond my imagination how a person can choose one OS over the other because of a messaging app 😄
You may have a plethora of various communicators on Android, including the likes of Duo, which do video calling. But the blue bubbles vs green bubbles I guess...
it's not even 1 os over the other, it's 1 company over ANY OTHER OF THE HUNDREDS
Well here in the North America we use SMS due to how our cellular network is set up (beneficial for rural areas) so third party apps aren’t really a thing. If this was anywhere else then yeah I can see that. However I would say FaceTime just looks better overall, I used Duo when I lived overseas, it wasn’t the best quality compared to FaceTime, but that might not be a priority for some people.
@@superiortoall22 whatsapp users use whatsapp for video calling , it is not good as facetime
i really dont get why apple users care so much about the colour of a text bubble, like will they die if they look at the colour green? theyre so overdramatic over nothing

*a lot
its only patented because they knew that since it was the cheapest and most simplest way to make video calling applications, many companies would make code that was very similar to their patented product, and therefore, they would sue them for millions
Learned some new parts of the story here, thanks.
Recently we were at universal studios in Florida and a family member was having a medical emergency and we needed to video call, the family member has an iPhone, but all of their relatives with our party had Android, they video called and phone called via telegram, Facebook and some other third party Android app, all would fail during a hard thunderstorm in Orlando. Just kept disconnecting and choppy audio and no exist video finally the person had the wherewithal to ask if friends could ask if anyone in our group had an iPhone. I do and they gave me their number, they talked on FaceTime for 2.5 hours with crystal clear audio and video, and happy to say, it was a good day and no one died, but they almost did and heart felt would-be final moments came across face to face. I’ve never given much credence to the difference between iOS and Android, I just like iOS. But I’ll be damned if I’ll ever switch now.
What type of emergency requires a video call? 🤔
To be fair, Google Duo/Meet is actually just as good... even my iPhone family members use it....
@@DavidKen878maybe they carry some sort of device that can’t be explained easily
@@catmerchant8699 Such as?
The tech support bit in me tells me it's likely they had a phone with either worst reception/reception issues, a phone provider using different bands (if their towers aren't as close or are down, it could lead to issues) or some kind of mobile data issues (since all of these use mobile data and aren't as basic as a phone call. Just my two cents though :)
Thanks for the informative video, love your channel ❤️
You explained it very well and clearly.👏
The dude could not even pronounce VirnetX. LOL. LMAO EVEN.

FINALLY I’m able to make the backing track my alarm ringtone, I don’t think I can ever get sick of hearing it lol
In Germany, I’ve never seen a person using FaceTime ever before. We always use WhatsApp or similar apps
Habe noch nie wirklich WhatsApp Video benutzt, immer FaceTime. Alleine schon wegen den Video Qualität. WhatsApp ist wie Skype aus 2009
smart
I’ve never used FaceTime before lol. There are just so many options now, in Australia I feel like no one really uses imessage with their friends, usually Facebook messenger, Instagram or Snapchat, all with video call features. I live in Japan and obviously LINE is the biggest messaging app here, the video call has different features like face filters and video filters too, which is cool
I guess this is the case for most of europe
Some friends with iphones just want it gone to save space
same in spain
VirnetX has literally destroyed android growth
I’ve always been an iPhone user due to my blindness. I find that the Disability features on the Eye device products to be really good. And I often like FaceTime audio calls to call my friends because the call quality is just so much better than a regular phone call. I do use WhatsApp a lot, though to communicate with my Apple and android friends.
Read the comment about the family, having an emergency in Florida and they had to scramble to find somebody with an iPhone. I thought that story was very interesting.
I’d like to point out that technically you can access FaceTime on Windows and Android devices through the chrome or edge browser. Apple’s support website even explains how.
*I had a question, but it's a season of performance rather than technology.manufacturers should think about it~*
Damn... I've only ever used FaceTime twice, because I live in SA, on one hand I'm kinda sad that I'm unable to fully use this phone, but on the other hand, I'm glad that I don't need an iPhone to Video call other people, because that sound like a lot, considering how very few people I know own iPhones. Moving back to Android next year, IOS has been interesting

Another example of patenting stifling innovation and limiting progress instead of encouraging it like it was designed to do.
How was patenting designed to encourage progress when the entire purpose of a patent is to take ownership and gain exclusive rights? 🤔
@@DavidKen878 the idea for patenting and copyrighting was people would be afraid to create and innovate because someone else could steal their idea. You'd be afraid to invest in resources and development because you'd be afraid that you'd never see a return on your investment because anyone else could simply steal your ideas and years of hard work.
A patent gives you exclusive rights to your ideas and inventions for a limited time, giving you enough time to sell your idea and make a return on investment without your competition profiting off your research and innovation for free.
But that's been flipped on it's head and some companies now patent ideas or inventions they'll never implement. Once someone comes along and figures out how to implement the idea the patent holder will claim they came up with the idea first and demand a large payout for the right to implement the idea. Even if the exact way in which the idea is implemented is different than the original patent, if the patent holder can convince a bunch of judges with absolutely no technical expertise it's the same thing they could still win the lawsuit.
That's how we end up with ridiculous law suits like Fortnite claiming they own the rights to battle royals or music companies claiming they own the right to music notes. This has the opposite effect of discouraging innovation by making it expensive and legally treacherous. The idea of patents is fine but the way it is enforced is ridiculous.
as always great insights, thx !
Thanks for the explanation! I have wondered about this, but always just thought it was the usual Apple way of doing things. I love my Macs, but I am not an iPhone user.
You are missing out on such great features.
You are missing out on so much customization and actual "New Features" that android implements these days and not the one iOS gets which Android had for years @@DavidKen878.

It also forcing people to buy iPhone which is why iMessage is only on iPhone. Apple will not cave to google and make iMessage universal. Tim Cook even said in an interview “buy an iPhone “
Yeah asking for iMessage on android is likely to be as successful as Nintendo exclusively releasing the next Zelda game for Amazon Luna.
Lmao. No one is forcing anyone to buy anything. iMessage is an Apple only feature. I don't know why you all act as if it must be made available on other operating systems.
@@DavidKen878 apple makes their hardware and software proprietary as a tactic to get people to buy Apple products. If they made iMessage universal, there would be no reason to buy and iPhone or switch to phone. Same thing with FaceTime. You want the platform well buy or switch to iPhone. If you want this you have to buy and iPhone. You can’t get it on Android. Is my point
@@Packerm87 That is 100% that not true lol. But even if it was, why are you saying that like it's a bad thing? Everyone makes proprietary products.

You forgot that is possible to FaceTime Android user, you can share link and on let’s say chrome open link on start video call with iPhone user.
story would have completely different if they would have released Facetime during lockdown when everyone was at home they missed a huge opportunity
And Google has their own app, Google Meet, which also works on Apple devices. And of course there's also Skype or Microsoft Teams or even Zoom. Apple is really losing out by not making Facetime available cross platform, since all the others are.
Not really. Because like the video said. People choose to buy apple products because it’s the only way to use FaceTime. They’re making big money from that fact.
@@Narutocoolcat They said that, but it's just an opinion. They didn't provide any evidence. I know several people who own Apple products, including myself and my father, who never use Facetime. My father has an iPhone and I use my iPad constantly. I'm posting this on it. Neither of us use Facetime.

For iOS 15 or later, FaceTime can connect to any user who don't have an Apple device. Only web version for non-Apple devices.

Dear Apple explained , you have to do a new video history of IMac because now is on Production IMac M3
Next Apple explained video idea: why pro iPhone models are only made for one year instead of three years on there non pro counterparts
Because “professional” phone users don’t need outdated hardware. Only the best. This is not important for a regular consumer who may not want to spend a lot of money for a phone and isn’t bothered by the phone being an older model

FaceTime became available on Android in Apple’s 2021 iOS 15 Release to a limited degree with a link required.

It is to a degree, Android users can’t create a FaceTime, but can join any with a link. I never said that the complete app was available.

Hey Apple explained can you please do a video on why the iPhone 15 has a back that can be broken easily and why it gets overheated when you don’t use a Apple charger
Answer to ur question: it breaks easily because theres nothing behind the backglass to support it and it gets overheated on any charger most likely because of the USB c or as apple said an Instagram bug
Actually an android user can FaceTime. Sharing FaceTime link android user can join in the call
Hey man I'm getting my first iPhone next week, it is the iPhone SE 2020

It may be true un US, but here in India, the most popular video call app is WhatsApp. Many of my friemds are using iPhones, but I have never seen anybody is using face time. iPhone to iPhone video call is also using WhatsApp.

android phones have facetime but the app name is google meet
Why Apple dont have call recording

Don't understand how facetime is better than telegram or even whatsapp video calls.
Actually FaceTime is open for Android and Windows but just on browsers.

there is an web version
Actually Google meet and duo are Google's facetime
Audio call and video call are good names. Face time sounds like a name for kids. A 5 year old kid is not eating his medicines so mommy says, come on baby, you know what time it is, it's face time! Like seriously! Nobody thought that was an embarrassing name for a product that was for adults.
Nice!
There is FaceTime Links available for Android through the browser. But you need the link which can only be created by an iPhone user you wanna talk with.
That's not FaceTime on Android. That's literally just a normal video call.
because they have video calls
I don't get the need for face to face phone calls unless it is to use the rear camera to show a utilities repair person a problem in your house.
Outside the US your last graph is the reverse.
so basically, one freaking company led to all this..
Isn't google meet adding face time like features? Because I can call people with it using their phone number like face time
because it is simply called "video call"
Face time isn’t really as exclusive now with the link feature
iMessage could crush if not both, telegram and WhatsApp, at least WhatsApp if only Apple would release it to platforms outside theirs. Change my mind.
Companies like this should not benefit from so called "damages" since they didnt build anything to be damaged. They just hold the patents and did nothing with it.
Damages is the legal term for money owed. It doesn't refer to actual damage. 😂😂😂
In the case of patents, regardless of whether you do anything with it, it's still yours. And people need to get your permission to use it. If you did nothing with the patent and people still didnt get your permission, then they owe you reasonal royalty damages. Which is the amount you would have received had the person bought the patent from you.
Kinda Sorta? Via Browser?
I think Apple should bring iMessage and FaceTime to Android for the benefit of all of us.
iMessage its old and not safe. Apple should update iMessage and use the standard and worlwide used protocol for SMS but they wont cause Apple sucks
