Why The iPad Doesn't Have A Calculator

- When the iPad was being created, a guy named Scott Forstall was leading its software development. He was responsible for the skeuomorphic interface featured early on in iOS, and the calculator app included with the iPad prototype was simply a scaled up version of the iPhone’s. The software team assumed the final product would ship with this calculator, but once Steve Jobs saw it one month before the iPad’s release, he met with Forstall right away. Saying, “where is the new design for the calculator? This looks awful" Forstall replied, "what new design? This is what we are shipping with.” Jobs said, "no, pull it. We can't ship that.” Although Forstall tried to convince Jobs to keep the calculator on iPad, he was given an ultimatum: Redesign the calculator’s user interface to make it look good on the iPad’s larger display, or it won’t be included. With the iPad’s release just weeks away, Forstall knew his team wouldn’t be able to create a new app from scratch, so the original iPad shipped without a calculator.

@Galavant No, I didn't put it on the app store because it costs money to. I can push it out to GitHub if you want to build it yourself.
He'd be a great politician. Saying a lot without actually saying anything useful.
Obviously lmao. They aren't gonna have a good answer for something like that, and a LOT of interviews with big companies are either an advertisement or just a load of random garbage to deflect from questions they don't wanna answer.
Steve “Baby-Brain” Jobs throwing his weight around by bullying some guy about a calculator 😂
"Sooner rather than later." Wake me up at my funeral when the billion dollar company figures out a calculator.
Bruh, no one is ever going to be "wowed" by a damn calculator. Just put one on the ipad.
I mean if the calculator made my phone walk to the kitchen and make me dinner then I'd be wowed
People would be "wowed" by now (if it was released at this point) as it has been over a decade and there still isn't a calculator yet.
Because its not the reason. It was not included part to being a scaled up version sucks, but also for the things you use an ipad, it was deemed not needed, and you could use your iphone or mac for that. It was all about making products for specific purposes with Steve, and not making an ugly mess of it, like iOS 14 and 15
@jess Windows 10/11 calculator is the best default calculator ever.
Keep using the free ones with candy crush adds on android. I guess you just want to crunch numbers and adds don't bother you
Craigs answer was pure utter BS
Fr. I could tell it was cap as soon as he opened his mouth.
Just like any politician. Saying a lot without saying anything.
imagine being a politician
Apple: upgrade 10nm chip to 5nm. Also Apple: can’t make a goddamn calculator with some of the greatest designers around the world.
He basically said “we can’t do it because we aren’t good”. It’s a goddamn calculator!
I’ve had an iPad since the iPad 3 and I was pretty sure that one had a calculator. But maybe my memory is wrong. Don’t recall the iOS version. When I got the 2017 model (having been out of an iPad for a while) I suddenly had to install a 3rd party app for that.
Had I known this earlier, in those 10 years, I could have learned coding and design my own basic calculator app!!😅
“steve jobs isnt ceo of apple anymore” thats a funny way to say he died
😂😑😑😑
Well he was fired from ceo long before his death, but yeah he. He doesn’t do much of anything anymore
@@ian.williamson how do you get fired as the CEO, arent you the one who does the firing?
@@cezargotrobbed I think either the board of directors voted on it because they didn’t like what he was doing with the company or he got up himself because he didn’t want to work himself until he died; he wanted to enjoy life. A lot of decisions aren’t even made by the ceo though, he’s more like the president and the board of directors is like congress.
@@ian.williamson That’s dumb. he can be voted out when he’s the founder??
