Today we’re going to explore the history of FaceTime. Because although Apple’s video chatting service is simple and straightforward, it has quite a complicated and dramatic history that I’ve never really seen discussed in great detail. So that’s exactly what we’ll do in this video. Now FaceTime has become a quintessential part of Apple’s ecosystem, it seamlessly works between iOS and MacOS, and for many people it’s hard to imagine living without. But FaceTime wasn’t even around until the iPhone 4, which means the service is just 8 years old, and only recently adopted features that many users wanted years ago, like group video chats. But let’s start from the beginning, before FaceTime was even revealed to the public, and follow its development to the present day.

Mich Washington Welcome to Germany, where iPhone users don‘t even know that iMessage and FaceTime exists.
People have to use iMessage if they are gonna message someone but then again they can download other messaging apps. And some people don't have Apple products to use those kind of apps. You need to understand that most people use Android or Verison or anything! Or they have no use to use iMessage and Facetime. People like you have to understand that.
@HeladeraDragon I mean, I have an Android and I just either text people with iPhones or use Instagram.
Facetime and iMessage are generally American things, here in Europe all my friends who have iPhone use WhatsApp and even my teachers who have iPhone use WhatsApp too
@@sontodosnarcos I would second that, what Idon't like that it didn't work if one party is on android or windows until recently, so despite I knew about its existance I prefer other more multiplatform approaches like Skype e.g.

I learned about FaceTime on the 4th generation iPod touch and it was amazing I was blown away (and still am) cause it feels like you’re there with the person makes being far away very close

5:38 You know I hardly ever use FaceTime, but now that you mention it, you are spot on about the audio. I notice that when I use Skype or Zoom, the audio is spotty and skips, or even worse, does that loud annoying sudden voice crack thing.
With face time it really does sound like you’re there with them. Neat.
I remember my uncle had a huge “Video Home Phone” that he used to video call my grandparents thousands of miles away. He installed one when he visited them at their own home. I only used it once before he just switched to using an iPhone and an iPod.
FaceTime been out since 1955-70's aka "PicturePhone" BellTelephone AT&T was one of the early facetimers.

Facetime was already popular but has seen even more usage during the current pandemic.
and fun fact: before FaceTime for both macOS and iOS, there was this thing called "iChat", which was a built-in app for most early macOS X versions, and it supported AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) accounts.

I’ve had the 4th gen iPod Touch since October 2010, I also had the iPhone 4, the iPad 2, the first iPad Mini, an iPhone 6 and now a XS Max and I have never ever used FceTime

One of the first video call phones were Skype phones that 3 brought out in the uk anyway but there noting like Facetime (even today Skype is lacking) I only used my Skype phone for free messages between me and my partner or family now obviously there’s lots of apps to do that including Skype but this was way before traditional smart phones

Jailbreaking to allow facetime to work on 3G actually resulted in better call quality than if I used a fixed line service

I think Apple should’ve made a service called FaceTime plus where if there’s an android user who’s interested in FaceTime or PC user they can download the app but they have to pay at least five dollars a month to use the service that’s if they want to use it over Wi-Fi if they want to go cellular Apple can have the carrier charge them five dollars extra to use FaceTime over cellular

Are use FaceTime over Wi-Fi sometimes it lights but most of the time it works perfectly fine never had a problem I wonder if any of you use FaceTime

Its sad here in Brazil people don't use it as the main video chat. The point is that an iPhone here costs sooo much, its the most expensive in the whole world, so there's no way of making it for everybody. So we use whatsapp as daily solution.

At the same time though, face time would still have some form of icon if you were being listened to, and it would have been reticle easy to stop it. Hit the red button. Also, proven by my testing, you would only hear about 3 seconds or conversation. This is for the recent bug.

apple needs a better verson youtube with no copyright
That's impossible. You can't just take someones hard work just because you want it. Copyright is there to give the creators the money they deserve.
Apple wants to put new features on their existing devices, unfortunately due to these very bureaucratic laws, Apple has to conform. Very infuriating.
This makes me wonder, was the Sarbanes-Oxley Act the reason why Apple didn't let the 1st Gen iPad Mini to download the iLife and iWork apps for free even though Apple made it for free after iOS 7?
I was able to download the apps for free by logging-in into a friend's iPad Mini 2.
