    I'm playing Warden in the current war and was defending the Safe house across the bridge from Ulster Falls in Linn of Mercy. Every night without fail, the Colonials would end up taking the Safe House and we would blow the bridges. Then in the morning when the Warden population went up, we'd retake the safe house. Thursday night I got sick of the cycle, so I decided to kept cheering people on nonstop to keep repairing and fighting. We were blocking doors when they charged in with havoc charges, mounting guns to windows, and when we ran out of bmats I somehow managed to get an ambulance across the bridge to get another 600 back into the Safe House storage. Other players were calling it quits and went to blow the bridge up, but me and a select few others refused. When we ran out of BMats again, we would scavenge for supplies to make small boats and drive them back and forth 100 BMats at a time. With a blown bridge and surrounded on all sides, we held that shit until the Wardens started to finally come alive. But instead of having to cross a bridge to reestablish, they already had a foothold. Morale has a huge effect in the game and had it not been for the few that stayed cheering each other on through that National Anthem level last stand, we would have lost it.
    God Bless Callahan

    My biggest moral booster is this: its a war game, and you're just a cog in the machine. As typically just an infantry guy (without us your logi is wasted and the fronts collapse faster), I've seen both sweeping victories, mind numbing stalemates, and crushing defeats.
    My first war was on the old charlie shard, which I liked that system, where one shard was more casual and the other more serious, but I also understand some (speculative) reasons the devs undid it.
    If you're bored of logi, or your tank regiment isn't online as much as you'll like after losing a few tanks, grab a gun, head to the front, and die. Infantry is the most frustrating but also the most fun experience ever.

    Au contraire, some regiments W side absolutely judge you for taking breaks, and everything else you do or don't do. They even go on long diatribes on their Discord about how they are better than all of their neighbours. It was what inspired me to take a break from Foxhole that has lasted a good 2 years.

      I've been in clans on various systems for about 12 years now. From being a regular trooper to commanding battalions and even whole clans. Just like in life there's always good and bad. I've been following Foxhole for about a year now and just recently was able to play. On my first day I started by going around and asking if people wanted help. Met people from different clans and honestly (most of the time) you can tell if a clan is good or bad by their players. And I'm not talking about skills. What I'm trying to say is that instead of disrupting your experience try to recognize if something doesn't suit you then just let it go. Don't like how you're being treated by others teammates/clans etc? Just move along and let them drown in their own insecurities and toxicity. And if you're part of a clan for a long period of time and can't enjoy the experience anymore well once again just let it go. Keep the good memories and the people you enjoy playing with and just dip. Like Robert said it's a game. Learn how to separate toxic/bad energy with good and focus on having fun.

    What got me to take a break is those godawfull partisans / alts. I can take frontlines shifting all war. I can take losses but if i spend DAYS building a facility of any size, meant to support my faction with ammo, equipment and weapons platforms, etc.. and then have that facility destroyed utterly overnight. Then congrats, you’ve made me quit for the rest of the war. I already bust my back making sure there’s a public stockpike and a stockpile for my regi or hell even other regi’s to use for operations and whatnot.
    For all of that to be undone by one shitheel is THE most demoralizing thing in the entire game for me.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому +1

      Makes sense. I know a lot of players that get burnt out by them.
      Sorry that happened to you :/ Unfortunately I don't know how to stop them directly besides just suggesting taking on smaller projects to help bring your own morale back up or even just take a break for war.

      I loathe partisans, but I will say that most people do not construct sufficient defenses to mitigate them. Alting is a different story. It ruins the game and you can do almost nothing about them, especially not long-term. And the worst part is they are effective, my clan saved raremats to build a frigate with and they got dumped by an alt, made the entire regi wanna quit. I suppose me even saying this is handing a W to them since these people revel in taking joy from others.

    I personally don't care about winning or losing, my personal WR is something like 25%, so it's really not the thing that demotivates me.
    The one thing I absolutely hate above everything else, is people not trying, you have a BB or Relic with an enemy tank line approaching, you've got tons of AT and also 120 Gun with shells.
    You try to rally people to defend either through crewing arty or rushing with AT, but you see all of these people, sometimes as high as Brig or Maj Gen not even trying to help and you get really frustrated.
    I can understand that some players don't want to interact with specific parts of the gameplay like arty, but when you have 50+ players at a front and you can't event get 2 people to try and do ANYTHING this is when I start to really lose faith.

I wished them luck with their evac in the discord where upon I was challenged by a member. I'm not a member of any Regiment so he promptly booted me from the discord even though I'd been vetted as an ally.

    Artillery has the biggest impact on Morale imo. When its raining down and there is nothing to stop it. You just respawn only to just die right out of the base as the enemy steamrolls you. Yeah... I quit and give up at that point. Tank pushes can be bad but at least a well equipped group of infantry can hold the line and even out right destroy a tank column.

    - I think the real burnout is that nobody listens to anyone and just plays as they want (sometimes just AFK, not even playing).
    - Like spending your time digging bunkers and delivering supplies so your team can open another front to push an easy target. But nobody shows up while 20 people AFK in queue elsewhere.
    - Or spending 3 hours building a Base then ask AFK people just to show up and Vote for Upgrade. Take them literally 1 click, yet nobody shows up.
    - I would rather play single-player games if not for some active individual in the community. (At least Bot in singleplayer games actually spawns after you set things ready for them)

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому +1

      Coordinating with others can be sometimes difficult for sure and that can really lower morale if no one is listening.
      And yea I wish those 20+ people in a que would have more incentives to join another front and push some where else. Maybe the devs can find a way to fix that some time.
      Not a lot of people know or remember about the voting for bases. I blame the tutorial system.

    You mentioned that there should be a flag in the game and I 100% agree. The devs should add horses as well. Something designed for the early game which spawns in the world like bicycles and after tanks are teched then they will stop spawning. I’ve heard many players want this and maybe you could use the flag as a spear to ram players while riding a horse.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      Yes!!! And horses would be pretty weak to any bullet I would assume ha even a pistol. But maybe they could make it work. Otherwise you will have to live that dream out in Anvil Empires.

  • @Vodkahans
    @Vodkahans 3 місяці тому +3

    I think population is most of the case the factor of winning or loosing, even if you have a low pop with more vets you still loose from attrition, vets need to do more for keep the front alive and burn out. When you have pop you can use new players or occasional player for keeping the front stable or give opportunity to vets to attack weak point on frontline/take a break if you play a lot. If you don't even have people for keeping the frontline stable you need to do it by yourself. For my part my role most of the time is keeping my hexa stable. protecting logi road, making defence where it's needed, kill partisan, sticky roaming vehicule, killing enemy wt, keep a track of enemy movement on map for announce to the team, ... etc
    But if the frontline is low pop, i'm force to bring a tank/canon/play inf for help and not doing the other part, and most of the time when i can't renforce the weak point on my hexa and be force to be in permanence on frontline the weak point i spot and didn't had time to renforce got attack by enemy most of the time.
    When you have a lot of pop, you can have help on frontline and backline for doing any stuff, if you have low pop, you spend more energy doing everything by yourself and then burn out ^^
    For one war i follow the post on reddit and i never got there again, my moral always got hit by these propaganda post and i feel better to just not see them ;d

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      We have certainly seen the data prove that population makes a difference like 90% of the time.
      And I agree with you that low pop wars people do seem a lot more frustrated and it's probably because they are doing a lot more of the work. Good observation.
      And good on you for just not looking at the reddit all together ha!
      Thanks for your thoughts on this!

    I believe being on the losing side can be interesting because you are fighting against the odds.
    I remember several wars ago, fighting for the wardens, we were pushed all the way into Reaching Trail, and our last holdouts were Elksford and Dwyestown. Morale was low, supplies were low, and I was one of the few staff sergeants in good enough spirits not to despair. The vets were unavailable since it was a "break" war, and we had lost the previous war. So, there were mostly new guys on the Warden's side. I won't lie; the Collies had us by the balls, and defeat seemed inevitable. The green tide just kept on coming again and again, wave after wave of men, then cars, then tanks, all while it was snowing. I believe there were three Collie clans participating there. We affectionately crestend Elksford "Elksgrad" since fighting was that vicious and cold. Most of us were in a foul mood since we had been fighting over Elksgrad for awhile, taking and retaking the town hall several times without being able to push. I recall one of the privates asking what to do and I told him that "we fight for a miracle, that's what" and encouraged him and others to follow me to the trenches while giving them directions. They were new, a little help goes a long way. After a week, I think, a miracle did happen, the entire Colonial offensive stalled, the vets came back, and we were able to bring in enough supplies to push the Collies to the town of Reprieve. Then we got our tanks in the area with two or three warden clans participating and contained the Collies to Ft. Mac Conaill.
    So yeah, we were at our breaking point and ready to quit. But with teeth clenching grit and determination to not quit the job until its finished, miracles can happen.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      I agree! I honestly prefer to be in a defending spot rather than the assault most of the time. Yea winning feels good but like you mentioned going against all odds can feel really cool as well. Especially if you can hold the attack off or do a lot of damage to them.

      I think most vet players understand why a war is being loss or won. It may be harder for newer players to understand though. Devs giving more intel from past information would be helpful. Like a place to check in game on when territory or bases were lost.

    Your Battle of the Bulge nearly convinced me that you were about to take it all back. Morale is just a Pendulum. I didn’t give up when I thought you were going to push back. I was pissed we lost the fronts I had been fighting on all war, but I began Doomsday prepping with Thunderbolts, 150mm, Dragon’s Teeth, Sandbags, etc. I don’t give up when my morale decreases, only change to more defensive measures.
    As soon as we took it all back again, my morale shot back up and I built more tanks.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      Well said about morale just being a pendulum. I thought for war 113 there was a few times we could swing that pendulum back in the other direction. I think if we Wardens would have held our ground in Stonecrade and Cape for another week we might have been able to do it.

    The wars are taking that long because the meta seems to be to build a huge multilayer fortress line every 50 meters and the technik to always back up aftger every shot from a tank and hope that one shot will track the enemy tank and give an opportunity to kill it this means hours and hours and hours long tank battles where barely any tank is lost, many are kept alive with repair after they have 0 armor left just to get almost killed again by 3 At shots from infantry.
    Waste of time.
    Resources are abudant, make more tanks and dont be afraid to lose them. If you do it right you spend less time bringing a new tank to the front than you spend with backtracking and repairing all the time. but thats just my opinion. And who am I to challenge the meta.
    I would disallow reparing vehicles for 30 seconds after they take damage and only allow repair of subsitem failure, not HP.
    I dont know what to do about builders building maginot line every 50 meters. If they would spent half the time with making tanks and logi them to the front the battles....
    trenches and wires are ok but the massive bunker structure spam has to stop.
    Also, moooooore arti. I barely see any arti, only large clans do it and even they do it rarely. randoms are like never. The game should have a built in camera to see where your shells explode to make it more alluring to random players. I bet they dont do it becuase its much more fun to shoot the enemy from tanks or trenches than to push a button every 4 seconds without seeing where it lands.

    • @alexvandenheuvel4757
      @alexvandenheuvel4757 3 місяці тому

      You need a spotter for Arty. Wind is a factor and most dedicated arty use third party tools to have more precise shots.
      Ideally you need 3 people. Spotter, loader and gunner.

    Hate. Let me tell you how much we’ve come to hate them since the formation of the colonial republic . There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for wardens at this micro-instant. For them. Hate. Hate.

    Here’s my experience with morale in video games. I sometimes play a ww2 naval game, and usually the pros play as the Japanese instead of American wich leads to more Japanese victories, but sometimes after multiple rounds lost as American someone will start screaming in global chat about freedom and the glory of the American navy, then we hype each other up and surprisingly often the tide turns. That hype continues for a few rounds of American victories until we either loose or run out of things to say. my biggest complaint about the foxhole community is how so many people seem to only enjoy the game if they are winning (rather the war or just a battle). I personally love the playing the game, I have fun driving, chilling on the front or doing some random logi. Don't fully get why people play the game if they only have fun when luck is on their side (no hate intended just confusion lol)

    Great video. 100% it's all in the player population. The devs have ways to help balance this like how tech spawns more for the side that has less players to keep the tech somewhat balanced.
    There are some other issues like it can feel like you only have one option to solve a problem and if that doesn't work you feel like giving up. Like on the colonial side when facing warden armor in the end game the best option you have is the stygian and BTD, but if you have a manpower shortage it's hard to get the people to support a BTD and it's more likely that the wardens will have unrestricted arty so the stygian gets countered.
    There is an idea that gets thrown around where if one side starts to win then they should be able to quickly end the war. As you have issues where as the population starts to decline, it puts more and more burden on the remaining players until they give up and it gets worse and worse. But if there was a sudden end to the war then the next one could start before people burned out completely.
    I don't think I like that idea personally but I do see the merrit to it. Like making the big rockets more available so they clear out areas instead of how rare they are nowadays.
    But also I wonder if it'd be better if all of the middle maps were more open and easier to capture so players would feel more accomplished in the early game instead of getting burned out early on like with how much of the middle regions turn into endless meatgrinders. If the meatgrinders were setup more towards your backline (large urban areas, defensible mountains) then players can accomplish more early on and either rely on their backline to hold or take a break when they reach the enemy backline.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому +2

      Thank you! And population as I talked about in another video is for sure a huge factor if a faction wins or not.
      I don't think I agree with that idea as well.
      And early war is really slow in terms of territories shifting around. You might be right that maybe players would feel more accomplished if they could be taken easier and get less burned out.

    As a player for warden and over 4k hours in this game, I ask you, why try to win now? The developers need the colonists to balance the counter of wins and losses, that's why they give them an overbuff in the last 3 patches. therefore, I suggest that all warden loyalists rest for the next six months until the developers remember the existence of our faction :D

    Obviously morale plays a role in keeping you from coming back. But the overwhelming evidence points to a lack of competence in your teammates. I doubt any person thought World of Tanks would be improved by requiring more teamwork just to operate your own tank. Or needing to communicate with 15 different people just to operate a battleship. This has the same fundamental problem as group projects in high school. If one fails, everyone suffers.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      I can agree with this. I would say it takes a lot more than one player to fail for the whole group to fail. In Foxhole terms it would be like if 1-2 major clans failed for a faction now that could do some damage to your team and morale.

    I don't think that personal moral is something you can control. Can't even imagine a person to be satisfied by investing hundreds of hours in to the war, lose it and stay positive after :)
    Unless you are a man of super high culture like those about whom Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem called if.
    Could be that this video author is one of those type but in that case you are next level super human being :)
    In my case, when my faction loses I'm blaming everyone and everything and myself as well. That's why I'll spread my rage over Colonials next war >:)

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      I would say I stay fairly positive after losing a war I spent hundreds of hours in. Yea it stinks that we lost but it's just a game and I did a lot of fun things with the players in the game. So I am forced to fight an entire tank formation alone with an ATR or try to hold a vital position against hordes of the enemy by myself. Naturally, I fail and get frustrated as we then bear the consequences of losinf that vital position that we could have otherwise held. After a few incidents like that I either get pissed or turn off the game.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      There really is no "claiming". The resources are still open to the public. A clan might claim the area around the field to build their base and they do this through a 3rd party system which a lot of players are not a fan of. But it's sometimes the best way to organize bases and sometimes have less drama. I'm not in the discord either so you may have to ask around in the official Foxhole discord to find a link to it. Believe it's called SIGIL for Colonial side.

    Population is the biggest factor, as we learned recently with the data drop on foxhole stats. But, moral is a direct contributor to Population. Low moral can and often leads to lower pop, lower pop can lead to a loss, for example.

    Another decent factor to low morale are those "serious" players that call out that the war is lost and done (Yes doom postinig), AND those who would rub operation successes to the enemy or friendly team from local voice all the way to reddit or Foxhole discords, sure most of the time its targetted, but randoms literally out there want to play for fun but if they see or even hear that kind of toxic boasting out there, well it ain't just low morale it is also making the game unappealing before the game actually shines.
    So when a friendly or enemy fails remember to say gg you tried or don't say anything at all
    More chaotic fun that way, unless of course if its larping lol then I understand that.

I want to primarily work solo so this was a slow, small victory but those micro goals assist the macro as well.
    Between slow solo logi runs I spent some time as a medic (i don't like guns/shooting games) and the two things that always made me smile were the players who would salute me after being revived and the players who feigned dramatic death speeches while being carried to me.

    Last war (112), I spent 3 hours hauling resources for a BT when I wanted to sleep. It was too late to cancel the trade I made. The next day, my ally pushed it into a line of HTD's. I was commander but had no control over the tank. I brought myself to play twice this war. (well, technically 4)

    When you have played the game for near a decade its very easy to see lapses in commitment by both factions. Morale is a real world term that translates well but I feel its less about that than other factors like time of year, new games, current meta and player count. Back before multi map wars colonials lost for like a year solid and that's the only time I've seen genuine large scale morale issues. While both factions are almost the same I would say that over the 8 years I've played foxhole it is the wardens that tend to fight right up until then end more often than not. This is because of the player created lore around Callahan and being able to fanatically scream a name as you hopelessly die against the green tide is a powerful weapon against "morale" loss and I feel is the biggest difference between the factions.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому +1

      I have a shorter time than you in the game it sounds like but I would agree that after playing both sides that Wardens have a lot more fight in them at the end then Colonials do. And I also agree that having that lore as a morale booster really helps. Colonial faction needs something like this.

    I guess I have permanent morale exhaustion at this point. This game demands herculean effort for the smallest amounts of pogress. Feels like playing arm wrestling with a giant.

      You have just described Foxhole ha. I think if you look at the progression of wars to closely then you will get burnout very quickly. Better to make sure you spread your energy out knowing that these wars last at minimum 25 days now and have potential to go into the 40 day time frame.
      This current war 115 is for sure going to go into the 40s at this rate.
      Take breaks and play different roles in the game! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

      @@RobertLovesGames I don't really feel like playing frontline anymore. It demoralizes me faster than literally anything else. I usually pick out one direction that I push and it goes one of two ways: you either meet a river in your way, which puts hard stop on any sort of progress until a large clan does something about it; the other thing that can happen is you making some progress and the wardens push you back to where you were previously and you go round and round until one of the sides basically gives up.
      This game isn't really about winning, it's about outlasting the enemy. This is by far the biggest problem I have with the game. Nothing demoralizes me more than knowing that everything I do, no matter how good I am at it, will achieve absolutely nothing because the only way my side can win is because the enemy stopped resisting. I played something around 750 hours by this point and the conclusion I come to is that this game has a fundamental design flaw that actively takes away all fun once you realize that it exists.

    My first day in Foxhole was fun and social, even though we were losing. The next day, in the final hours of the war, I sat in the spawn tower with a Malone. I destroyed so many, killing non-stop bayonet rushers. Then we pushed forward. I went to sleep (at 9 am haha) happy, only to wake up and see that we had lost. Still, it was the best day ever.

    Yeah, havent played since like 2022 maybe 2023 after 1.0, trying to keep a facility running with only a couple of friends was like a 2nd full time job and I felt compelled to make sure I was on for a certain amount of time every day so the facility didnt degrade, then the rate changed and I logged on to see it missing and crumbled. Your videos and them getting recommended to me make me want to play a bit more and just play casually tho, the game is fun and great, its just so much of a time sink

    For me, the thing that makes me lose morale is when you spend hours upon hours, days upon days, building up a defensive line and a facility. You try to patch holes in it, try to get others in the hex to help you out (To no avail) and then all of your hard work, and the facility you are needing to solo manage because no one wants to help, gets burned down in about 30 minutes. All because some partisan knows how to glitch the game to get past what you built.
    I guess at the end of the day, for me, it isn't the legitimate pushes. It isn't the 1-sided fights, it is when nothing you did mattered because someone exploited something in the game. For me, that has been happening more and more frequently and I am unsure on what to think about it.
    I loved old foxhole, but the new one just feels.. weird.

    I suffered from low morale burnouts before the region Msupp changes. Now I can do an hour of driving a flatbed instead of spending all of my time just running Msupps. I do sometimes plan too much than I have time for though and then I grind through it achieving the results I wanted to, but being too burned out to enjoy the success.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      Praise be the Msupp changes! Hope they don't revert those. Keep reflecting on your limits and your enjoyment in the game! Don't want to get burnout in Foxhole because you planned on taking on big projects. I know to many players that took on big projects and then didn't like playing the game after that.

    Currently i'm on my "break war" after binging 5 wars since January this year, one of the biggest morale issues i've found is when players on your own faction giving you trouble over small issues and don't want to at least cooperate together and brings other people down, had it happen to me a few times which is when i noticed that it's time for a short break from the game.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому

      Sounds like you do need a break after playing 5 wars in a row! Good on you for taking a break!
      And yea I don't like it when other players don't want to listen or cooperate or just try to bring others down. I just ignore them and move on because they are just not worth my energy.

    As a new player I only lost morale when I joined this small group doing arty that was helping the front a ton, some alt killed our "commander" (the one guiding all the arty) and he rage quit then the whole group just fell apart and left the arty guns to be picked up later. After we stopped shelling the wardens they just completely ran us down and pushed us out. It really sucked seeing us lose that front so easily because one guy decided to rage and leave the rest of the group without direction.

    • @RobertLovesGames
      @RobertLovesGames  3 місяці тому
