The second season of our animated historical documentary series on the Mongol Invasions is here! Previously we have covered the Rise of the Mongol empire under Chinggis and his successors. This second season will deal with the Fall of the Mongol domain and the first episode will describe the peak of the Mongol power under Kublai and the invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281 and the battle of Tsushima.

Fun fact the US fleet planning to invade Kyushu had Japan not surrendered were also hit with a Typhoon shortly after the surrender. It heavily damaged most of the merchant ships and quite a few warships.
Japan's weather is not friendly to enemy fleets.
It isn't weird. There's typhoons every year, it's like hurricanes in Florida. If you pay attention, each campaign lasted months. It was a matter of time before they got caught in a typhoon, and they spent plenty of time. It was bound to happen. Also both times they were already retreating. The Japanese beat them fair and square. Edit: Still, thumbs up.

An interesting fact maybe worth mentioning is that, even though the Japanese were victorious, the invasions did destabilize the government and led to its collapse. Traditionally, Japanese warriors were awarded after combat with the spoils taken from the vanquished (usually land), but since this was a defensive victory there were no spoils to share. Disgruntled warriors and their daimyo became more and more rebellious, and the financial burden of the defense was being felt heavily. Japan always was a collection of estates more than a unified country, and the outcome of the invasions drove these estates and their lords further apart.
i mean, even before mongol invasions japan was a land of warring factions. a little over two or three times i think that japan was actually united in one banner? correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the shogunate that was established before the mongol invasion was because of the mongol invasion in the first place, thus they weren't really that stable in the first place.
@@futoifutomomodesu3206 The Kamakura shogunate was established after the Genpei War (1180-1185). Japan did not see the first Mongol invasion until 1274, so I doubt the 2 are connected. I'm no expert on the Kamakura period though so I could be wrong.
@@Joppe253 well, i most likely in the wrong since my sources were way back when I was 13 in a youtube video, were they said that japan needed to unite comparing it to the greco-persian wars.
@@futoifutomomodesu3206 Maybe you're thinking of the Asuka period? The Imperial system was created as a copy of the Chinese because the Japanese were afraid that their loose confederation of Uji (clans) would not hold up against a united China if China decided to expand its territory.
To be more exact, After this battle,The Hojo clan reinforced thier influence across japan.
This state is called the exclusive control of the Hojo-Tokuso family.
As a result, Emperor and the other powerful samurai clans repined against the dictatorship of the Hojo clan. The Ashikaga clan is one of them.
So it was actually

Yea that’s why you conquer neighbors. To raise men
It is called kamikaze

3:33 In short, Japan was ruled by the regent of a regent.
Alex Ye yep, and if memory serves it stayed that way for a quite awhile, circa mid 19th century with the Meiji restoration, I think it was.
Abe Rod Nope, most of its history was just regent, not regent of regent. I don’t think the Tokugawa Shogunate ever really had a regent of a regent being the supreme leader.
@@ZhangK71 buuuuuuuut, I clearly remember that even after abdicating, Tokugawa Ieyasu continued heavily influencing the government and being the true power behind the throne.
@@lucadelaurentiis6907 I don't know if what you said is true or not, but I don't see what it has to do with what I said. Assuming that the emperor is a figurehead mostly dominated politically by the shogun, then there was a certain period of Japanese history where the shogun was in turn a figurehead dominated by a regent or some "shogun's assistant" or something like that. However, this was only a small part of Japanese history. Most of the time, the shogun was the direct ruler behind the emperor, and was no figurehead of anyone else.
I don't think Ieyasu abdicating to his son and/or heir counts as a "regent of a regent" because they're still both the same institution/"faction".
@@ZhangK71 Ieayasu wasn't actually a "regent of a regent", but he was too much of a relentless and cunning politician to completely and voluntarily cede power. He was shogun for a mere 2 years, between 1603 and 1605, then abdicated in order to avoid the same fate as his immediate predecessors. He was exposed too much in that position. But he continued to rule the country as the ogosho until his death in 1616. You can easily find information about this on the internet. His son and heir became the new shogun, but it was, and it is, clear where the real power resided.
Y'know it's good to know that a video game like Ghost of Tsushima actually got people to want to learn more about acient Japanese history. School teachers would be so proud!

I wish but my teachers only teach western European history but not cool shit like the Romans but medieval+ so we don’t learn about the Ottomans, Vikings, Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Mongols, Chinese, Japanese, Native Americans, etc, etc.
American school teachers don't care about Japanese history. They're more political commissars than educators these days. To them, history is something that needs to be rewritten in order to fit the narrative.

Respect to Japan for withstanding 2 Invasions. I always loved the History of Japan and their Samurai and also I like the History of the Mongol Empire, rising from a short horde to a world power.
Japan didn't have any navy,
@Lynz Ally because japanese feudal warfare were 99% land based. Even as an island nation Japan never developed sea faring ships and they didn't seem to need them.
@@devilhunterred Well they had some pirate-groups operating against Korea as it is mentioned in the video, and if I remember right japanese pirates even attacked sometimes chinese coasts. Not a mighty navy, but ships who could sail that distance and back could be not that bad (of course they may have used island as foreward bases).
There was another large one in 1019 by China and Korea. 300 ships with 3000 men . Tsushima was invaded by surprise, took women&children of 1200, killed 300. There is precise number was recorded but I can not remember. The monk reported to Bakufu/Government for help and reported what villagers&he saw. They ate human fresh uncooked and domestic animals including dogs. Japanese were horrified.

Bruh the storms carried them
The storms helped a lot, but only because the Samurai were skilled enough to keep the Mongols in the water. What an heroic defence. (And just killing the Mongol's envoy after that first attack was a boss move.)
After first attack, a young shogun thought they will come back. So J built stone walls of 2~3 M high and 30KM long alongside Hakata bays.
Although Mongole 140,000 army and 4500 ships reached Hakata, they could not land for two months, Japanese were only one third of mongole army, J were waithing and fought off in front of walls. Mongole were backed off to Islands near Kyushu , four times. but J attacked at each island where Mongole were. Finally Mongole built stone walls for protection on the island and surrounded the island by their ships. J was good at fight against one by one. So during night J crept into their ships and kill. Mongole tactics were fight enemies as groups from distance with arrows or riding on horse. During two months, their tactics became defensive only. Then Kami Kaze came.

@TheGreaterGood80 yeah even if the mongols did manage to land i doubt they would be able to stay n the land for very long due to the unsuitability of the terrain
@energy material Actually the formation maneuvers the Mongolian cavalry did would not be efficient in many important places in Japan.
@energy material but you are comparing horses that are well-trained and native to the mountainous terrain vs Mongolian horses that are native to the plain. Pretty sure you know which one has the advantage here.
By the way, someone should mention the incredible similarities between the Mongol invasion of Japan and the Persian invasion of Greece in the 5th century BC. The similarities are crazy: 1) In both cases the aggressor was the largest empire in the world, an unstoppable force that never faced defeat before 2) Number of invasions for Mongols and Persians before they gave up the campaigns: two! 3) Persian fleet was destroyed by a storm close to Chalkidiki - Mongolian fleet was destroyed by the typhoon 4) Persian invasion led to the unification of the Greek city states and the self-identification of the notion of being "Greek" - Mongol invasion had exactly the same result in Japan!
It really feels as history repeated herself in the Eastern Asian version of it.
Yes! And the fact that both failed against underdog nations significantly smaller than them (the two smaller nations having their culture and warriors still renowned today and considered badass, which I find awesome). Both the Achaemenid and Mongol Empire collapsed soon after as well, albeit one was through literal conquest by ya boy Alexander and the other just fractured and dissipated. Still tho, so many similarities.
Actually both had been defeated before - and Japan actually became less stable
@@law_boii But then interestingly both Alexander's empire and the Mongol empire met similar fates - both became divided because there was no real succession plan and generals who squabbled over who the next ruler actually should be decided to just settle for having the empire carved up and each general having their own land to rule.

Many Europeans and Americans sincerely believe that the Mongolian army has twice failed to invade Japan like the divine wind. In fact, the Mongolian army was organized by ancient Korean soldiers, but because they built ships in haste, they were not very experienced in actual fighting. In addition, Japanese soldiers at that time were quite strong, and it is true that they responded to the invasion of Mongolian soldiers by boarding Mongolian ships and using their manure and fire well to defeat the other soldiers.

Fun fact: Mongols successfully invaded Sakhalin Island on north of Japan. Sakhalin is geographically really close to Japan, but during this period, it was unknown to chinese or mongolia. Maps created at this time always showed Japanese Isles and Sakhalin were further apart than it actually is. If Kubilai knew about this he might have invaded Japan from North since they already gained control of Sakhalin.

The encounter with the Mongols was certainly a shock for the Japanese samurai, who had never experienced anything like their massed bowmen or gunpowder bombs. But a combination of stout Japanese resistance and a devastating typhoon made the Mongol expeditions a costly affair. The funny thing is the Japanese looked like a pretty easy enemy to defeat given the highly ritualized character of samurai warfare, which was only possible to sustain because the samurai almost exclusively fought one another. When Kublai Khan mounted his seaborne expeditions to Japan in 1274 and 1281, the samurai were initially wrong footed by an enemy who ignored their combat protocols like inviting enemies to single combat, but this was mainly because it was not a Mongol custom and because they did not understand the Japanese language. Nevertheless they still managed to successfully resist the Mongols, with the help of the kamikaze (divine wind). And so the Japanese did not fight a foreign enemy again until the 1590s when they tried to invade Korea.
Wrong. Japan and Korea had countless skirmishes even before the Imjin War. Imjin War was when Japan and Korea and Ming actually had a much larger scale of warfare.
And Japan also invaded Ryukyu before invading Korea.

You're one of the minorities somewhat, I liked the series, I haven't read the Marco Polo book nor did a ton of research on Yuan Dynasty Mongols but the show was good tho cliff hanger
The book isn’t very good, it’s essentially a medieval travel guide mixed with a sort-of diary.
@@Nocreabo215 hmmm
This is pretty cool! The Mongol invasions of Japan was the greatest season finale ever.
Excellent video, informative as usual. Permit me a slight nitpick - 13:20 a coup de grâce is a French phrase. I'm fairly confident that the ce is silent - pronounced coup de gra.
Playing ghost of tsushima...
UA-cam: here’s our recommendation.
More like UA-cam: Here's what actually happened.
Me: Buys Ghost of Tsushima
UA-cam recommendation: Mongol invasion
The timing of this was amazing
Hey Kings and Generals, how long do you make Mongol invasion of Vietnam?
This should be the next episode
No one cares lol
@@shinjiharada4785 But it will as he mentioned about this video. He never miss about Vietnam
That will be an upcoming video, along with the Java campaign.
@@TheJackmeisterMongolHistory Don't forget about Burma
I'd love to see a well funded series on the japanese defence against the mongols, it would be an interesting story as both sides are such good fighters
Agreed!
Shouldve been the second season of Marco Polo. Not that stupid secret Christian crusader army in china shit
When you're being invaded by the Mongols but Lord Susanoo got your back.
5:34 Japan was not a small nation by any means in 1274 .The main island of Honshu is a bit larger than Great Britain.
He prob means compared to the mongols
14:48 amusing that you guys used the actor's portrait that played Jingham from Marco Polo show for the icon.
Can't wait for the docu's on their collapse, so much interesting content. As always astonishing work K&G, keep it up!
Me attacking Japan as Ming eu4 flashbacks
Great video! It's good to see the Mongols back, even if the succeeding videos will cover their downfall.
One minor criticism: the sound of the storm during the first invasion was too loud. Drowned out the narration for me. Other than that, the video is great. 🙂
Thanks for the feedback! :-)
There is not much use to conquer and empty land. North America wasn't that populous. What conquerors of the type of Genghis Khan looked for were not empty lands but large populations to pay them tribute.
When Europeans invaded the Americas, Europe was already overpopulated and had excess of population.
I gotta admit there are LOTS and LOTS of great new information on this documentary. Master Piece of Information. Thank you for sharing.
Mongols were too hasty and impulsive in invading Japan.
Instead they should have taken time to gain knowledge on Japanese environment and battle tactics.
This war was the equivalent of persias invasion of greece. Both were destroyed by nature and defeated because of their pride.
TheGreekDeal their is no Pride and Glory in war. Those are used in Hollywood to fantasize battles.
It's all about Knowing your enemy, apply good strategy and then WIN.
Simple
They did, they already sent spies and acquired knowledge concerning Japan they did that everywhere they went, there's mistakes in is video.
This is such a great series. I’d love to see a series on the Mongol Invasions of Vietnam and Champa! The other instance where the Yuan were defeated in East Asia.
Mongolians did not know how to prevent corruption through checks and balances of rights. They ruled the most advanced society in the most primitive way. For example, China was the first country in the world to use paper money at that time. Mongolians did not know the operation principle of paper money, so a large number of printing paper money led to currency. Expansion. Only half a century after Mongolia conquered China, a large-scale anti-Mongolian riot broke out in China in 1352. Two years later they lost control of the whole country
GreaterGood510 Definitely. Was mainly referring to Eastern Asia though. :)
Would love to see them do an episode on India as well!
赵汉卿 Yup! Great warriors and conquerors. Not the best civilization builders. Kind of like Alexander the Great. I believe most of the Mongol’s administration was carried out by people who they conquered, and not the Mongols themselves.

An interesting tidbit: during the ending days of WW2, the allied invasion fleet also suffered major losses to weather near Japan, aka the Typhoon Cobra, along with the devastating Okinawa campaign and the successful test of atomic bomb, the U.S. finally cancelled the plan to land on Japan mainland
This came in my recommendation because of [[Ghosts of Tsushima]] it's great to learn about the history of the Mongol invasion as I have to relive the journey as Jin Sakai a samurai.
Samee
Getting ready for Ghost of Tsushima.
This video suddenly appear on my feed after watching ghost of tsushima state of play.
Amazing video!
Will you guys ever cover the Soviet invasion of Manchuria?
Jabzy did a video about that conflict. The video is called "the soviet japan war"
Hey kings and generals can you do a youtube video the Satsuma Rebellion 1877 involving the last samurai
Shem Naga wow easy I know his a bit of a D but come on
Kublai's forces were also routed by the Vietnamese at the Battle of Bach Dang River (invasion of Dai Viet by the Yuan dnasty) and stands as one of the greatest defeat of the Mongols. Hope K&G team adds this up for their future video in the Mongol series. Great content as always, Cheers!
Don't worry, that one will be coming soon!
Adib laugh in javanese
@@TheJackmeisterMongolHistory waiting game begins! :)
@Adib yep the massacre of 1305 AD ordered by the Sultan against converted mongol citizens/POW's and a series of failed mongol invasions of the Delhi sultanate, still those defeats cannot surpass casualties suffered by the Yuan dynasty in Dai Viet (Tran Dynasty). At the Battle of Bach Dang 1288 alone the mongols lost 80,000 men of the original 110,000. so yeah Dai Viet may very well be the Mongol's "Vietnam".
Adib those 29 invasions 'claimed' by the Delhi sultanate was fought over centuries with different rulers of the sultanante (Khajils, Mamluks etc.). Those can be considered as series of see-saw battles in which Mongols (Chaggatid khanate) invade (e.g. occupation of Kashmir and Lahore in Punjab province for decades) and retreat after being routed, at the same time ravaging towns along the way. Most of these battles was waged as raid/retaliations from previous defeats thus the mongols only field 1 to 2 tumen at any given time depending on how many mongol commander is present on the field (exceptions were battle of Rivi and Almorah? With casualties inficted against the mongols ranging 30 to 60 thousand). This back and forth raids by both sides never really stopped until the slow decay of the mongols over time. Having said that, the battle of bach dang river on 1288 was greater in scale because of the staggering loss of 80,000 mongol soldier in a SINGLE CAMPAIGN with vietnamese estimated loss of only 4-6 thousand men, thus at par with hannibals cannae, a complete battle of annihilation.
Great video, like the rest of your work! I especially like the music starting in 14:11.
12:45 they released the ninjas 🤣
