Just curious, is there any particular reason why you use a portrait of Farnese as your profile picture? not sure if I seen a video like this about his career but after seeing the image I think it would be a interesting topic.
@@superspies32 agree that our language had some influence from china but we already have our language. Just like every country's language have some similar to the other countries next to them. Actually the latin just a bunch of letter that translate what Vietnamese people speak. In 14 century Vietnamese people created our own language, it's look like chinese but Chinese people can't read that, we call it's Nom. Nowadays no one in our country use Nom because we use the latin so long and can't get back to Nom. Just some University about our Vietnamese language is teaching it for student and some people have interesting on Nom are learning it them self or with help from old people or University teacher.
@@Sealdeam Yes! How did you know this? You must be pretty well versed in that era of history haha! (much more than me) I think Farnese was one of the greatest strategic minds of the 16th century. Diplomatically and militarily. Check out the Battle of Gembloux, of the 1584 siege of Antwerp.
@@Foneio The spanish were fortunate to have some of the greatest military minds of consecutive generations at their service, among them the Duke of Parma; I know something about that because that period (1492-1648) alongside roman history and the american civil war are my favourite subjects, so it was more chance than anything that I recognized the portrait of Alexander Farnese.
Mongols: We can speak to the horses. Our horses will crush our enemies under their hoofs. Dai Viet: We can speak to the rice fields. The rice will disappear when our enemies come.

Mongolian army died of unsuitable climate? American troops died of mosquito bites? You should know that the Mongols invaded Vietnam for more than 50 years, the American troops beat Vietnam for 30 years! They all carefully study the terrain as well as the soil in Vietnam. Look at the fact that the Vietnamese army defeated the 6 most powerful countries in the world! Farmers beat it all - ha ha
actually I suprise when read about the Indonesia's Mongol invasion. Defeat the Mongol. Yes. But " not only defeat Mongol, but also use them to defeat other of my enemies.". Raden Wijaya is another level compare to another generals who defeated Mongol.
@Hoàng Nguyên the fact that they did. China, France, Japan(few months during the WWII), and US(technically for 2 decades) have successfully invaded us. However, to conquer and to invaded I do believe they are different. To conquer is to blend the culture, destroy national identity, bla bla. Thus, I mean there have not been yet any nations on Earth had successfully did it to us. The reason that skinny nation is still on the world map is because of national identity. The idea of Việt people, neither communist nor republic Vietnam.
To be fair Dai Viet was under control of China for a quite long period of time, if I remember correctly maybe around 1 millenia, and comeback as more like autonomous revolts during time where China has some internal conflict, more than we won the fight. The part where I dont really understand is why in such a long time the Vietnamese didnt absorb Chinese culture enough to recognize themself as Chinese.
A small country with 4000 years of history, torn by war after war, invaded by superpowers time and time again, but the Vietnamese were not erased from world map. They still preserve their original identity, and eventually grow to become a decent country. That is quite impressive if you think about it.

Watching this video and seeing that audiences outside my country know about our history made me feel proud and so, I'm very grateful.
Vietnam used to be under Chinese rule for 1000 years at their beginning. But once they woke up, not any empires can occupy their land. Chinese, Mongol, Manchu, Portuguese, French, English, Japanese, American...all failed to occupied the holy Vietnamese land. It's not a coincidence, it's the strong will of the Vietnamese that defends their independence.
Yes, southeast Asia is hard to invade, jungles and islands are only for the locals. However, this also means southeast Asia countries are hard to expand.
@@svenkorlos5146 southeast asian countries doesnt have any problem to expand their country. You can find Srivijaya empire and Majapahit empire. They are a thalassocratic empire who conquer the area which today is known as Indonesia and Malaysia. There are other empire which can conquer a lot of lands there like Singhasari Empire, Demak Sultanate, Tidore Sultanate, etc.
@Rz A You totally mistook what I mean. Expansion feom one region to another, like Turkish expands to Europe, China expands to central asia, Mongol expand to all around regions.
@@svenkorlos5146 The empire in southeast asia doesnt like to expand though but they sure love to colonize empty land like in Madagascar. Some Malay group people actually colonize Madagascar even before the Bantu people from Africa colonize it. It is also a well known fact there that they have trade with the aborigin people in Australia long before the european found Australia but they never colonize it, some researcher even found some cannon from Majapahit/Demak era in the northern part of Australia.
Mu Qri They did. But most of the foot troops and supports were Chinese, not Mongol though. And they did fear having to come back to Vietnam for a fourth time only to die in vain doing their Mongol masters’ biddings.
Hoang Mai Many Song soldiers and generals helped in the defence against mongol invasion of Vietnam as well. Mongols on the other hand were ruthless and barbaric therefore they didn’t gained any loyalty from most of their Chinese subjects, especially in southern China.
They used the same tactics as Russia did with Napolian troops. They ordered their civilians to evacuate to mountains and jungles then burned their crops. Mongolians thought they could get food from civilians on the way but they faced ghost towns and villages. They captured Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam but saw no food.

Fun fact: After repelled the third invasion of the Yuan Empire. Trần's Emperor asked Trần Hưng Đạo: How was the enemy? He simply replied: This year's campaign! Easy.
Let us *all admit* the fact that the Mongols overplayed and utterly overextended themselves That was the reason why their 'empire' was soo short lived and cannot be sustained
Don't forget how the idiots basicly went übernazi on all terretories they had conquered turning tjem into useless wastelands that were a net negative for the empire. Plus it ensured that the surviving locals would never be truly loyal
Not really. The biggest issue was the lack of instituonalized power. And even that is relative: usually nomadic empire would collapse right after the original leader dies (see: Attila, Modu, Togon/Esen and the like).
The strong will of the Vietnamese and Afghans can never be defeated as they have proven in history that these two countries repelled invasions from the mightiest empires.
Not really it was under Chinese rule for a thousand years. During the Ming Dynasty , Yongle Emperor conquered it and ruled it as a province , but his son , Xuande decided that Annan (Vietnam) wasn't worth it and abandoned Vietnam
The most admirable thing about general Tran Hung Dao is that his family had a personal feud with the current Vietnamese emperor, but he had put his personal feud behind the priority of his country. As a Vietnamese, I am proud of General Tran Hung Dao, but as a human I have major respect for him based on that aspect I had mentioned.
Vietnam is that skinny little quiet kid that gets bullied and doesn't say anything back until you touch him, then you get slammed on your head and stomped out in a rage of fury.
So proud of how the Vietnamese have been able to fight off invasions from superpowers throughout medieval and modern history. The Vietnamese people I know are spiritual, easy going and kind. LOVE their cuisines as well, definitely on my bucket list to visit this beautiful country. Much love to Vietnam!
It’s not our love for war/conquest of other nations that makes us formidable. It’s our love for peace and willingness to do anything to have peace that makes Vietnam deadly.
Pre-historic Vietnam was home to some of the world's earliest civilizations, making the Vietnamese, one of the world's first peoples who had practiced agriculture. With an intriguing history of achieving what others deem impossible, Vietnam is a country like no other. The New York Times wrote, "Vietnam has a history of resisting the world’s great powers. It threw out the French after almost a century of colonization and then handed the United States a humiliating defeat. That same spirit has emerged in its war of wills, this time over China’s attempts to project its growing power closer to Vietnam’s shores." The deadly anti-China riots in Vietnam in 2014 as the result of China's illegal placement of its oil rig in Vietnam's waters, drove more than 40,000 Chinese nationals back to their mainland China. The history of Vietnam’s formidable people and defenses dated well before the Vietnam War and even before the Mongol invasion of Vietnam in 13th century. In fact, it dated back to the war against the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in 300 BC. However, the famous battles of the Vietnamese army against the mighty Mongol Empire have become the most celebrated episode in the history of Vietnam. Scholars regard the Mongol conquest as one of the deadliest invasions in human history. The unbeatable Mongol army had conquered half of the known world, but eventually given itself up to a small country named Dai Viet (currently Vietnam)! In less than 80 years, the Mongol Empire encompassed entire land from the Pacific Ocean to the Danube River. After having successfully conquered Eastern and Central Europe, Middle East, Central Asia, Great Russia, all of China in the 13th century, the powerful Mongol Empire immediately started their southward expansion in Southeast Asia where it finally met its match. Even China was agonizingly defeated and completely conquered by the mighty Mongol army, which by contrast was bitterly defeated 3 times by the resilient Vietnamese. The decisive victory of the Vietnamese army over the invading mighty Mongol army in the bloody battle at the Bach Dang River in 1288 eventually brought an end to the Mongols' invasion of Dai Viet (currently Vietnam) as well as their dream of conquering the entire world. If the Mongol Empire had learned that the Chinese Empires before them had been bitterly kicked out of Vietnam after their 10 centuries of occupation while completely failing to assimilate the Vietnamese, the mighty Mongol Empire would have never even thought of invading Vietnam.
@@siddave549 who say it's easy? The first Mongol invasion on our country was so terrifying that even our own history record have to admit their force is unstopable. Heroes and generals died like flies. But we somehow learned along the way, and fought back with more efficiency.
Well to be honest, if one Great Military Army invades Vietnam in this modern time, we will not stand a chance. The Mongolians failed in the past because they were not similar with the geography, tropical diseases spread among soldiers, and according to Vietnamese history, the general of Dai Viet army back then was great with tatic. None of those things would help in modern day since modern wars are fought by nuclear bombs, battleships and biological weapons.
Alexei I thought China has already released their biological weapon and the world is suffering for god knows how long? Btw don’t bother answering this, I just realized I don’t care anymore
@sinnerandprejudice Vietnamese did use guns. Actually, a lot of guns, since they did have a period of civil war before where many belligerents employed guns, even western guns (due to trade) in mass. The problem was that by the time of European colonization, like many other kingdoms and empires in the region, Dai Nam (the name of the kingdom of Vietnamese) fell prey to isolation, extreme conservatism and corruption. Military was regressed, while the restriction of trade and prosecution of Christians, blocked them from the access to more advanced weaponry. While France was equipped with breech-loading guns and rifles, Vietnamese had mostly smoothbore, muzzle-loading guns and firearms. France also had steam ships (not sure if they employed these ships in the invasion of Vietnam, though). Better ships allowed them to bring bigger cannons to siege Vietnamese castles, which were often situated near rivers and shores.
It's not like there is one graveyard of empires on this planet. Alongside Afghanistan and Vietnam, you also have the Balkans. Probably other places too.

@私の日本をアイシテル I didn't said that Vietnam was unbeatable. The problem is Mongol's strategy and army's strength is unbeatable at the beginning of the war. But Vietnamese knew their weakpoint, which is they didn't carry a lot of foods. So we destroyed our rice farm, we killed cows and chicken,... Which is not good for the mongols's because their strategy is use the foods they stole. So after a while, they start to starving and we attacked back. So basiclly Vietnamese's strategy is to retreat while Mongol's army is still strong and attack when they're weak. We paid the tribute to them because we didn't want war. Will you want another "Little Boy" drop into Hiroshima? We just want peace. And don't be too serious. It's just a joke.
@私の日本をアイシテル and just a little advice: You should learn more about English grammar and polite conversation. You sound kinda childish and impolite for an adult Japanese.
It's quite impressive if you know that Vietnam had fought so many enemies in its history, from China (main villain), from Siam/Thailand, from Cambodia, from Laos, and even against Mongols that composed many Turks/Persians/Koreans, Manchu Qing, Japan, France and USA - and is now even inspired the Ukrainians (during the Russian invasion several Ukrainian bunkers named itself "Vietnam" as a confusion for Russian troops), Yemenis, Algerians, Poles, Egyptians, Czechs, Croats, Taiwanese, Uyghurs, Tibetans, to believe about a future win for their rights to exist, etc. What on earth power gives this nation such a strong determination to stay united amidst so many aggressors approaching is beyond me. What a country.
Wow! you know a lot about Vietnamese history. Thanks for your comment with some interesting aspects. Your question about the source of strength of the Vietnamese people determination of staying united in fighting off oppressors is a very good question but hard to answer. It can be our traditional culture. It can be our love of peace and knowing the value of freedom and independence after thousands of years of struggling experience. The strength might be from the love of the blue sky, the calming river, the peaceful rice fields and strong bond between villagers or neighbours.. The spirit has been seeded in our blood/DNA. So that whenever the nation in danger, the Vietnamese people from most paths of life would become one. I believe that if a foreigner who lives long enough in Vietnam would act the same way :-)
1. Vietnamese people are emotional people: for the country, the homeland., the family, even the beautiful scenery. => When the invaders come to destroy these things, the Vietnamese will bring all their strength to fight to protect what they love. 2. The Vietnamese are very good at long-term resistance, the more they fight, the stronger they become. When the enemy kills a loved one, a friend, a comrade... Then the hatred for the enemy multiplies in the souls of those who are still alive. => creates incomparable power => It was itself that defeated 500,000 Mongols. It's a scary thing....

Dear Kings and Generals; Dai Viet's capital at the time was called Thang Long (Thăng Long), Hanoi is a more modern name for it (not until 19th century I believe).
@@KingsandGenerals Just a small suggestion but to avoid misleading, you can explain like this: "The capital Hanoi, or formerly known as Thang Long during this period, ..."
ok, several mistakes here: - you guys use the "Lý Dynasty flag" instead of the Trần Dynasty's one - the capital's name at the time was Thăng Long. "Hanoi" was used since 19th century - Hóa Châu and Thuận Châu were established in 1307, so they haven't existed then - Toghon marched into Dai Viet from the northeast, not from the north. He defeated Vietnamese forces at Vạn Kiếp and then captured the capital, before Sogetu reached northern Vietnam. - Sogetu was killed in a battle in Red River Delta, not at the border - In the third invasion, Omar's fleet sailed upstream all the way to Thăng Long, returned to the coast to pick up the supply fleet, but failed to meet it. Omar then went back to Toghon before he ordered a general retreat

This isn’t really true for this time period, because the Chams were not actually considered Vietnamese nor did they saw themselves as that. It’s not the love of war and conquest that makes Vietnam a formidable foe. It’s the love of peace and the willingness to do anything and fight anyone to uphold peace that makes Vietnam a deadly enemy.
Nice video, but you miss some important detail. When Mongol people capture Thang Long (Ha Noi), they got nothing but an empty city with deadly trap and deadly disease, no food, no people left for them to exploit. That represented how well the people are willing to cooperate, with their government. They are willing to abandon their life, their home and every one of them become a soldier even for women, kid, and elder just to defeat the invader. That is why the Mongol always easily capture Thang Long (Ha Noi) as well as why they always fail after doing that. This strategy is a strategy that requires fully cooperate of the people and iron will to defeat the enemy or die. It's called "Vườn Không Nhà Trống" - "No Man City". It's a different version from the version in China that Zhuge Liang use to scare Sima Yi. Vietnamese's "No Man City", is a deadly trap. I think there are not many countries are tough enough to make their capital into the bait. If yes, please comment, I want to know more :).

Huge appreciation to the ones who made this historical video and all the international friends that showed big love to us Vietnamese! Well I would unhesitatingly state that there is no other countries which is undaunted, consistent, brave and persevering like Vietnam. These virtues are what kept us survive through 1000 years of Chinese colonisation (officially, because they came back many times after that but we never gave up on maintaining our land), Japanese, American, French colonisation, and also are the reasons why we triumphed over Genghis Khan's great army three times! As a Vietnamese, I myself sometimes feel unbelievable as I always wonder how incredible Vietnamese people are, to keep on standing up when enemies shoved them down; to keep on fighting no matter how many years had passed, how many blood we had spilled, how many pain and loss we had to endured; to insist on believing that we would win no matter how powerful the enemies are, because we fight for our justice, for our sovereignty and territory, for our belief and for our people's life. And we did, we won all the fights against strongest, undefeatable, most powerful armies! We made the impossible possible. Oh dear, can't tell how proud I am to be a Vietnamese.
Actually, this is already the third battle of Bach Dang in history. In the first one in 938, Ngo Quyen repelled an invading Southern Han force, which ended an almost 1000-year-long Chinese occupation in Vietnam, and created the independent kingdom of Dai Viet. Even more interesting is the fact, that Ngo Quyen used the very same trick on the river against the larger Chinese warships, as Tran Hung Dao would use again some 300 years later against the Mongols.

@an nice no Vietnamese didnt push the Japanese out. Most of the Japanese garrison in Vietnam already surrendered. What the Vietnamese did was just disarming them. The total arm force of Vietnam before 1945 were only 32 strong.
actually, there're 3 battles of Bach Dang (in 938 against Southern Han, 981 against Song and 1288 against Yuan), and they employ the same tactic too.. I don't know if the Chinese didn't record these defeats because they were too humiliating (hence falling for the same trap again and again), or they knew but didn't tell their Mongol overlord out of spite..
That and don't forget with dynasty change, there was the burning of records, accompanied by negligence. That's why they say "History repeats itself." And you are correct, Vietnam used the same terrain meta for those battles aforementioned. "If it ain't broke..." ;)
In ancient times, Vietnam has been expanding to the south. Vietnam has conquered southern Vietnam. Do people in the south now hate people in the north? Your logic of history education is very problematic! ! !
@@旅人途见I don't understand your question. In my comment, it's 2 different people (Chinese and Vietnamese), so the Vietnamese have no reason to love their northern neighbor. But the Vietnamese who currently live in the South are the descendants of the Vietnamese in the North, so why should they hate their Northern kin? It like asking if the Chinese in Guangdong still hate the Chinese in Bejing - it makes no sense whatsoever.. but when it's about a different culture, then yes, the non-Vietnamese in the South don't particularly like the Vietnamese. During the 2nd Indochina and Vietnam war, many minority groups tried to establish their own states within Vietnam, fought against both the North and South government. And the anti-Vietnamese sentiment is still quite strong in Cambodia, with many Khmer still consider that Vietnamese stole their rightful territory (that also the reason why Khmer Rouge turn against North Vietnam).
Kublai Khan established the Yuan dynasty in 1271 in China. The Yuan dynasty is also known as "the Mongol dynasty" or "Mongol Dynasty of China" by westerners. The Yuan dynasty consisted of Dali Kingdom, Song Dynasty, Jin Dynasty, Xixia Dynasty, and the Mongol Empire led by Kublai Khan. According to historians, known as the earth shakers and the most violent barbarians in human history, the Mongols had been fully responsible for displacing the world populations and changing the face of human history through their widespread bloody massacres. Scholars regard the Mongol conquest as one of the deadliest invasions in human history. In fact, it took Iran almost a century to recover its original peak population prior to the Mongols' invasion. The mighty Mongol army has been considered the most unquestionably feared in the world. Every inch on earth the Mongols passed, was greased with human fat and soaked with human blood. Even the deadliest winters in Russia could not deter the Mongols from invading Moscow and Kiev. After their successful conquest of the Great Russia, the Mongols again repeated the great success in the Battle of Legnica in Poland known as the Battle of Liegnitz. The powerful Mongol army totally crushed the combined defending forces of European fighters, twice its size. The Mongols had great success in the battle by feigning their retreat to separate European knights from the main body of allied forces and defeat them one by one. The Mongols employed one further trick-a smokescreen being used across the battlefield to hide the Mongol movements, confuse the Europeans, and virtually annihilate them. The decisive victories in Poland and Hungary have become some of the most celebrated episodes in the Mongols world conquest, which showed the effectiveness of the Mongol war machine. Suffering the same fate as the European countries, countries in West Asia including Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey one by one submitted to the mighty Mongol army. Sadly, China was not an exception. The Chinese Empire said to the mighty Mongol Empire, "Our Empire is as vast as the sea, yours is but a handful of sand." The Chinese had paid a deadly price for their arrogance they would never forget. The mighty Mongol army creatively went around the Great Wall of China, easily got inside and savagely massacred all the Chinese people, leaving a mountain of human skulls/bones outside the Great Wall that could be visible from miles away for years. According to historians, “Body [of the Chinese prisoners] stacked ‘like rotten logs’ littered the ground for more than 30 miles.” The mighty Mongol army led by Subedei (also known as Subutai-one of the greatest military commanders and strategists in history), continued to brutally burn, pillage, rape, and murder all the populations of 90 Chinese cities for over 6 months. As a result, unable to protect the Chinese people from the Mongols' attack, China's Great Wall has sadly become a historic symbol of China's eternal shame and failure. The Chinese dynasties had to defend against countless Mongol attacks. Genghis Khan persistently fiercely attacked China for several years. Finally, the mighty Mongol army conquered all of China in 1279 after Western Xia Dynasty, Dali Kingdom, Jin Dynasty and Song Dynasty all one by one shamefully surrendered to the Mongols. In less than 80 years, the Mongol Empire encompassed entire land from the Pacific Ocean to the Danube River. After having successfully conquered Eastern and Central Europe, Middle East, Central Asia, Great Russia, all of China in the 13th century, the powerful Mongol Empire immediately started their southward expansion where a small country known as Dai Viet (currently Vietnam) at the time was their first target. However, totally failing to achieve the great successes as seen earlier in the century, the unbeatable Mongol army met its match. In spite of having been fully equipped with hundreds of well-armed warships and over 100,000 well-trained troops, the mighty Mongol army led by the most brilliant and successful military commanders of all time with the greatest military strategy of Sun Tzu, was totally bitterly defeated, not once but three times (1258, 1285, and 1288) by the Vietnamese; and the decisive victory of the Vietnamese army led by Vietnamese Prince Tran Quoc Tuan against the invading powerful Mongol army in the bloody battle at the Bach Dang River in 1288 eventually brought an end to the earth shakers’ (the Mongols) invasion of Dai Viet as well as their dream of conquering the entire world. If the Mongol Empire had learned that the Chinese Empires before them had been bitterly kicked out of Vietnam after their 1,000-year occupation while completely failing to assimilate the Vietnamese, the mighty Mongol Empire would have never even thought of invading Vietnam.
The Vietnamese is a barbaric copy of the Chinese, the same race and the same chromosome, but the difference is that the Chinese chose civilization, while the other chose wild life and went south.
You might read the Cô loa battle to know whether that it is or not. And btw, Vietnam is a combination of two countries, Dai Viet and Champa. So in effect, it isn’t a barbaric version at all. Beside, Vietnam has never really invaded other countries if they don’t become a threat for the ppl. This has been a policy for why Song Dynasty didn’t attack Vietnam eventhough they have opportunities
@championszz Are you only count invaders as a government assembling or local uprising? Also, Dai Viet didn't destroy by Champa like you think it is since there is a record that said about fighting among the local that cause the need to invade. Same thing apply to Song cause if it isn't, Dai Li has attacked Dai Viet multiple times before the Mongols come (of course, there were money and negotiation to pay in exchange for otherwise no foreigners is allowed). Aside, you might completely omit about diplomacy or foreign affairs between the tribes or lands. Most invasions back in the day were technically known by a group set of supporters and ppl who worked with the royals. On top of that, Medieval invasion were different because lands weren't distribute due to location but population and trading for resources (which is why the mongol is known for with their strategies). Beside, it is objectively wrong to say peace didn't be a solution in medieval age because of pirating or ppl who want resources from other nations that push the needs to invade. And it isn't a natural selection to governing if it wasn't internal conflicts that lead to bigger options and most of those who went for invading other nations tended to have aggression in the first place. The part that some early nations did have judicial system and it prevented the government to going for war base on what their culture beliefs. For most part, small country with a lot resources, they would actually work on stabilize their eco system more than going for a fight. Funan was also example until invaders from the sea coming in and most of these ppl weren't soldiers but pirates that first pulling tribes to unite together although most of it just the word of mouths because no records available because writing or culture is too diverse with large amount of ppl don't speak the same language.
Do you understand what it means to take less and more enemies? Because the Vietnamese understood the strengths and weaknesses of the Mongols very well, they knew that if they were to confront an army that was skilled and many times larger, they would suffer a lot of losses, and they realized that the Mongols often The Vietnamese did not bring much food when fighting, so the Vietnamese applied the "garden without a house" tactic, that is, burned all the food and moved the people into the deep forest, waiting for the enemy to plunder nothing. and lack of food, the spirit of depression will organize decisive battles, from which victory will be achieved, that is the military art of Vietnam, the country has won thousands of huge enemies throughout. Your history is not as simple as you think. Thanks!
The Vietnamese people have been underestimated many times over the past 2000 years or so, eventually defeating their enemies using Sun Tzu's tactics and instructions, and shear guts and determination. They will be the next economic power in the greater south east Asia and beyond.

No mention of the Khmer Empire which was next door. I do know they paid tribute in order to keep the Mongols out. Chances are the Mongols were more interested in taking over Dai Viet and Champa so they stayed clear of the Khmer empire at least until they managed to takeover Dai Viet and Champa which they failed at. Most likely they did not want to get caught in a war with three Kingdoms at the same time.

Great video about the invasions. Just a little detail to add: the letter "李" refers to Ly dynasty, which was prior to Tran dynasty, who governed Vietnam at that time. The letter should be changed to "陳".
A few thing i concern about this video, as a Vietnamese myself and i also pretty good at history: 1. Dai Viet Capital's name at that time is "Thang Long" not Hanoi. Hanoi only being used as a name after the Communist Revolution in 1945 as it became the capital of Vietnam. 2. You didn't mention the "Scorched Earth Policy" was used during 3 invasions, basically every time Viet Army abandoned the Capital, they ordered people to bring every food with them and burned down all rice field surround the city and on the way retreating, leaving Mongols with no food supply. However, this is a very good video
Only half of here are truth, the name of Hanoi has already existed for a long time back in the early stage of Nguyen dynasty, when the france attacked Vietnam(Dainam at that time) Hanoi name had been using
Thank you for bringing knowledge of Vietnamese history to the world to better understand Vietnam. Vietnam's most prominent battle against invaders on Bach Dang river, I love Bach Dang river tactics. It witnessed many battles defeating the Southern Han invaders, the Song Chinese troops, the Yuan-Mongol invaders of the Mongols, many of the enemy troops died causing the river to turn red.

Historically Vietnam was ruled by France for a hundred years and by China 90% of its existence.

My wife is from Vietnam, I did go there twice and I can't tell how much I love this country, will probably spent my life there
Pre-historic Vietnam was home to some of the world's earliest civilizations, making the Vietnamese, one of the world's first peoples who had practiced agriculture.

Funny enough the Mongols actually conquered Afghanistan.
I believe that if a foreigner who lives long enough in Vietnam would act the same way :-)
We would rather die than lose our country, refuse to be slaves. Solidarity, brave, patriotism
=> creates incomparable power
=> It was itself that defeated 500,000 Mongols. It's a scary thing....

I know. Decided to use Hanoi to make it more relatable
@@KingsandGenerals Just a small suggestion but to avoid misleading, you can explain like this: "The capital Hanoi, or formerly known as Thang Long during this period, ..."
ok, several mistakes here:
- you guys use the "Lý Dynasty flag" instead of the Trần Dynasty's one
- the capital's name at the time was Thăng Long. "Hanoi" was used since 19th century
- Hóa Châu and Thuận Châu were established in 1307, so they haven't existed then
- Toghon marched into Dai Viet from the northeast, not from the north. He defeated Vietnamese forces at Vạn Kiếp and then captured the capital, before Sogetu reached northern Vietnam.
- Sogetu was killed in a battle in Red River Delta, not at the border
- In the third invasion, Omar's fleet sailed upstream all the way to Thăng Long, returned to the coast to pick up the supply fleet, but failed to meet it. Omar then went back to Toghon before he ordered a general retreat

Because Vietnam territory, have many civil wars between " North Kingdom - South Kingdom" after that ( Mac - Le; Trinh - Nguyen; Tay Son - Nguyen;...). However, almost of them actually " North Viet Kingdom - South Viet Kingdom" instead two different ethnic like Viet-Champa.
It is funny that American mistake that Champa is the ancestor of South Vietnam government during Vietnam War. Actually, South Vietnam government is the children of these Vietnamese who conquered Champa.
This isn’t really true for this time period, because the Chams were not actually considered Vietnamese nor did they saw themselves as that.
The Chams were forcefully annexed in early 1400s by Vietnam and since the Vietnamese forced the Chams to adopt Vietnamese costume, language and culture overall, forced assimilation basically.
Champa is not Vietnamese. They are close to Khmer or Malay.Viet ethnic(Dai Viet) defeated them in 15-16 century and annexed them into our territory. The next part would be annexed by Vietnam is Mekong Delta from Khmer Empire in 16-17 century.Vietnam is not only a defender, but also a conqueror.

Great comment. As Vietnamese people, we welcome people who understand us deeply. it's you!

Conclusions:
1.Never side with Southern Vietnam
2. Never Invade Vietname when they are divided
The southern Champa at that time was close ally of the northern Dai Viet, they are not really divided
Btw@sinnerandprejudice, actually Vietnam culture started from ... Vietnam ( the northern side ). Until China came and replace there culture ... at least they try. In fact, they changed Vietnamese into a rebellious people, never accept any foreign invaders rule there country ... especially Chinese.
@sinnerandprejudice Lac Viet, sure. But Au Viet territory stretch from southern China to Northern Vietnam, rom Guandong and Guanxi of China to Cao Bằng of Vietnam.
@sinnerandprejudice only Au Viet are in Modern China, but China Culture didn't came after Lac Viet & Au Viet become "Au Lac", and the Culture was very different from Ancient China. But when it came, it started a conflict between the two countries, across 2000 year of history.

A few thing i concern about this video, as a Vietnamese myself and i also pretty good at history:
Only half of here are truth, the name of Hanoi has already existed for a long time back in the early stage of Nguyen dynasty, when the france attacked Vietnam(Dainam at that time) Hanoi name had been using
Tôi thấy họ nói Hà Nội cũng không sao vì nếu họ muốn biết Hà Nội và trận đánh từng xảy ra ở đâu thì sẽ dễ dàng hiểu hơn
Hanoi was named after Ming Mang king as he chose Hue as the capital. He didn't want to have a non capital city to be called a dragon city.
Tên gọi Hà Nội bắt đầu có từ năm 1831,trước khi Pháp xâm hiếm Vietnam 1858 (Wikipedia)
