@Susan….of course I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt when they are not being filmed that the cleaning crews bend down on their knees in the hallway and pray before entering an empty apartment or that they say prayers standing over a foul smelling, soiled mattress like shown in the video. What’s being done here may look respectful and impressive but it’s more than likely just showcasing.

Unfortunately it’s almost everywhere right now, this lonely death. Last year I met an old man in the hospital. He was wheelchair bound and rolling down a slope. I helped him out a bit and had a chat along the way. He told me his heart was failing and that he had no one at home, his brother had also died just two weeks back from the time I met him. After that encounter I’ve been sad every time I think about him. He was a funny man as well, had a loud and boisterous laugh, told me he often came to the hospital to watch people walk around. I hope such people can be given more help and care.

I have worked in nursing homes, and though they are kind of depressing places, I suppose it’s better than being alone with no one to look out for you. I really enjoyed working there, it’s a shame those places are so understaffed and the employees always overwhelmed and busy, because the residents want nothing more than someone to just sit down with them and hold their hand and listen.

I am not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that these men stopped to kneel and offer a prayer before entering the apartment and prayed again once in the bedroom, before starting the clean up, indicated that they have profound respect for the deceased. And that is really heartwarming in today's world where lack of any respect towards anyone, dead or alive, is so prevalent....what a cold, loveless society we've become.

I can never remove this tragedy from my memory. I do not know who she was, but as part of society, I feel somehow responsible, just like her family and friends did not check on her. We couldn’t be with him, as there was the omicron breakout and the hospital was filled with people who refuse to get vaccinated.
My wonderful, kind, sweet, and loving father died too young and completely alone of something very survivable, because selfish people won’t get the vaccine. I lived in a New York City 5th floor walkup apartment. It was an old building and had 4 apartments on each floor, 2 in front/street side and 2 in the back. On the street side, lived a very old man, in his 80's and he walked up the stairs every day with his bag of groceries. he took some time to get to the 5th floor & would rest every other floor. He was a bit senial as well & would turn his back to people when they would walk by. He also wore only 2 suits & he smelled badly unfortunately. However, i would always be polite & attempt to speak with him. One day, after seeing him for 4 years he actually started a conversation with me & i was amazed. he had lived in this apartment for 50 years & his wife passed away the year before i moved in. He had nobody in his life he told me, as well. He said he lived so long by drinking water and walking everyday :) He also spoke about Whitney Houston & was so sad that she died and said it should've been him instead. Then, one morning, it was Valentine's Day, i heard Police walkie talkies in the hallway & i looked through my doors peephole & saw 3 officers in the hallway. I opened my door & they were going into his apartment. I already knew, but had to ask them & they confirmed he had passed away & our buildings Superintendent had found his body after not seeing him for days. I was saddend, evern though we weren't close. A week later, i saw that the door to his apartment was open & i was very curious to see his apartment, since i knew it hadnt been renovated for 50 years. I opened the door & went inside & it was like entering a time machine into the past! the floors were old original wood, the appliences were so old, he had a very old record player and old jazz albums too! just one bed & a small sofa. i collect records & wanted to take some of the records, since everything was going to be thrown out, but i did not. it was incredible to see how he lived, all alone in such an old way, however, moving through the streets of MODERN NYC... he always looked confused when i saw him on the block... i know he was just reminissing about the old days. I always admired him... i feel i will also pass alone, by myself & someone will find me deceased. i do have children but they are far away in another country. I'm only in my 40's but i know my destiny. I collect antique glass, vinyl records, furniture &they amass a nice amount of money. i dont want my treasures to go to waste so i've already documented all of my possesions: date of origin, value, etc and hope my children will want some of the items or someone can place my items in the right care. ONE MANS TRASH IS ANOTHERS TREASURE. God Bless these men who prayed for him & his possesions. a shame all has to be thrown out & his child wasnt concerned about his items. .. sorry for the long post, this really hit me hard...Bless You All.

One thing I noticed as a white male is that most Latinos while not having the best financial condition very frequently do have best social ones. They have tons of friends and family and are able to communicate in a very carefree way. A lot of Asian or white people have brutal pressure to be independent while family, friendships and romantic prospects come in second. Basically a lot of it is ingrained in the idea that intimate relationships weaken your ability to survive alone. At work I have friends who are Mexican, Ecuadorian or Peruvian who are 30-40 with more than 1 child who live with their parents. And then I have some white friends who are again in the same age bracket living alone for years. Environment and tradition has a lot to do with how a person grows up to become. This is why if I ever have kids, my primary focus would be to keep them as socially active as possible while being surrounded by a big family. Stimulation of parts of brain that have to do with human interaction and connection are the biggest deterrent of development of depression.

I lived above her and there was no smell. She had a daughter and grandchildren in the same city. Also, several siblings. I don't have anyone. When I die I could very well end up like her rotting away until neighbors complain about the smell. It makes you realize that material things don't really matter. I’m an American mortician so I’ve been able to learn a bit about crime scene cleaning services by virtue of my education and through UA-cam channels/videos about it. To me, it seems that many of the American cleanup services are quite predatory in their prices, leaving families no choice but to clean up the bits of their own family members (which is actually quite hazardous to a person’s physical health). No family should have to pick up pieces of their family member because they couldn’t afford to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars on top of funeral expenses. I’ve also heard that the cleanup services can also be unprofessional and do a shoddy job at cleanup, which must be beyond horrible and even more traumatizing to the family. Glad to see cleanup people be so respectful of the deceased.

I completely understand the sentiment for respect, I felt that way too, but I also understand their need to lighten the load and find ways to cope after listening to them. They are going into highly, emotionally charged situations. They are essentially first responders and are seeing things most people do not. Many of them suffer depression, go to therapists and are getting through their jobs how they can. Laughter seems a harmless way of dealing with some of the emotions they experience also. Another beautiful thing is, those crews express togetherness in their jobs. Hopefully it does help them. I have seen them express respect.

When I looked at that bloody bed a shocking image of death and time flying made me realise that I dont wanted to be sad no more, and I made the first step to be more open. Not long ago I spoke about my parents about all the bullying I suffered, the things that made me an anxious person and how I became a solitary and sad guy, and it felt like a big bag of sentimental bricks was being released from my shoulders. Now i'm more talkative, and every day I try to change the perspective of my mental problems. Thankfully now I have somebody to talk about those things that hurted me.

That's why, even if you hate people or have social anxiety, you have to commit into finding someone or if you can a support network to rely on in times of need. It's the most important thing. This comes from a person who has had social anxiety and generalized anxiety since i was a little kid. Fortunately we have a system in our country (Italy) called "consultori psicologici" where you can talk to a therapist for free for like 8 to n sessions depending on your economical situation. So i did EMDR therapy and turned out my social anxiety was actually a symptom of PTSD. Now i still have a little bit of social anxiety but I'm more aware, and most of all i know relationship are evolutionarily essential for your survival. Of course you can survive without close relationships now, but you always have to find at least one person to rely on when your body cannot function properly anymore. Seek psychological help if you cannot do it on your own, or at least make friends online (with caution of course).

Someone once said we all die alone, there is some truth to that. The saddest thing to me is how he lived alone, not how he passed away.
On a lighter perspective, I really think the cleaning crew’s respect was admirable and I was glad to see that.

I Don't wish Kodoku-Shi even on my enemies; some elders in this generation really do feel like they have nothing to live for after they did everything they had to do; it brings back memories of my grandmother as without reassurance she felt like a burden and thought she was ugly, but she died surrounded by family in the home and i managed to get a laugh out of her... a day before she forgot who i was. the respect shown here was touching, it warmed my heart; i feel sorry for the poor fellow; i even stopped and did a silent prayer. i really am a loss for words for how messed up this world can be..

I feel most sorry for any person so tormented or neglected by a parent that they’ve left them to rot and die alone. We don’t know what the story is behind this video. But, as a survivor of child abuse, this video wasn’t sad to me. It filled me with hope and relief that there may be justice in the universe for the wicked that harm their children to the point that this is the result. I do not know what this man’s story is, but if he was truly a good person and parent then I am sorry for that, and he deserved better. If not, well…
Thank you for sharing this video. And peace be with all of the adult children that are no contact with their families.

It has become a normal occurrence in Japan that young folks deliberately forsakes their old parents and abandoned them. In fact. The number of prisoners in japan has a very large number of elder inmates. They deliberately went and steal some small things so they can be in prison where they can have someone to care for them and have a small elderly community in jail. :(. There was a documentary show addressed this problem in Japan not too long ago. Also. I’m sorry you had to endure the abuse as a child. No children should be subjected to that. :(

@@margueritemazzeo2904. Not really. They have general respect for the people and elders generally and the display of respect is mostly just for show. It’s one of those weird facade of keeping face in public kind of thing. The younger generation is mainly focus on themselves and to get ahead. This in turn resulted in elders neglects and brushed to the side to die. There is a large number of elderlies in prison over there. They would deliberately go and commit petty crimes like stealing small things so they can be sent to prison to be with other people and to have better care for them at their end journey. There was a documentary about it not too long ago. You can do a search about Japanese elders going to prison by choice on UA-cam here and you’ll see.

My mom passed away alone but we kept in touch with her. My sister talked to her every morning. So the one morning she didn't respond raised alarms. A few hours later and still no response, we called police to enter the house and do a 'welfare check'. Sadly, she was gone. But at least it wasn't too long afterward when her body was recovered.
She died from a lifelong battle with addiction, not necessarily loneliness. But it is very important to check up on people. Even neighbors!
