The instructional videos are great, but watching a live match and seeing how you guys try to make adjustments was even better. I hope videos like this keep coming.
Kevin doesn't look like a big guy, but he packs a punch. Ian is very crafty and smart. I'd like to see you play that other utuber guy that always posts his matches; iracer?
Hands down, this series with Ian and Kevin giving us real live thoughts on what they are thinking during their match was one of the best teaching material ever!!! For me the mental aspect and strategy you guys displayed was priceless. You guys are doing a great job. I feel you guys are now setting the bar high on quality tennis instruction. I thought the ones where you corrected actual people's stroke and showed their improvement was fantastic! This... this just set your content again up another notch!!! Thank you again. Coming from father and son who started out in a park rec program.
From part 1 to part 3, this not only increased to a fun conclusion, but made me think about so much; tactics, knowing your opponent, fight, aggressive vs. passive, knowing your own game, and so much more. Kudos for taking the time to do this!!!!
ugh..this is so much more entertaining yet at the same time educational. i love the little planning tactics commentary after each game from each opponent. i learnt so much more through just these series ,..why dont more coaches here in youtube collab and teach like this?? so much more in depth n watching ur favorite youtube tennis coaches lug it out is nail biting bonus!
The reason why other online coaches don't do this is simple: scroll through the comments and take a look at the negativity about our strokes/games/tactics. While most viewers have benefited from watching and learning some people are only interested in criticizing, and frankly that can be really discouraging and intimidating if you aren't used to it. Glad you enjoyed it, Santosh!
There's an extra level of learning that I get when 2 good coaches/instructors play each other. It's great that they can detach themselves from the match as players and comment and instruct on what is going on. That was a great match.
This series is more fun to watch than pro matches. Please create more contents similar to this, and we would really like to see a rematch where you guys can finish!
Loved the editing, loved the tension build up, and the commentary between points. So great to see the sea-sawing emotions throughout the match from both players. Loved the tactical change ups when you guys read the other player. Ian you seem to have a bit of a weakness in your backhand but are a master strategists and solid mental game. Kevin your ground strokes are strong weapons. Sometimes you beat yourself when the game isn’t going your way with tactics that come from desperation. You’ve always got the dogged fight that brings you back though :-) Awesome fun guys, keep it up!
Total win for us. Wow. I loved seeing how you each came to the court with your histories and tools, and showed us how you were able to adjust them to fit the situation. Kevin detuning and Ian bringing pressure without just amping up power were both maximum good stuff. That third set would have brought up a lot more questions, but I'm very happy to have seen these two. Thank you!
I'm going to do some serious thinking about my "physicality" and using my body more and just crunching the ball when I can. Need to resurrect the old forehand power groundstroke I had with my Wilson Pro Staff 6.0 about 15 years back.
I love the way Kevin is saying play to your strengths. The ebb and flow was superb. I'm actually going to accept notifications from this channel, an honour I exclusively bestow upon soccer channels 😁 Seriously though, great tips and then the real time match, the insights, the edit. Fantastic. I'm turning on my notifications now 👍👍👍
Really helpful stuff. Love the commentary from you guys walking us through that changes you're making on the fly. May be too much work with all the other videos you have coming, but I'd be interested in you guys breaking down your own form on some of the winners and errors.
Ian. You're doing great. Kevin, same goes for you too. Thank you both for your conveyance throughout the match, the internal idiosyncrasies, that we as viewers fail to realise. Keep up the good work 💪😁💪
Very nice concept, and well done. Very instructive. Shows how thinking is just as important as technique, skill and athleticism. In tennis, "know thyself" is so important. What do you do well? Where are you weak? How do you strategize your play to maximize your advantages and defend against your weaknesses? Do the same analysis with your opponent, but know your greatest control is over yourself. Also, control emotions and frustrations. I like Kevin's "Fight," meaning make your opponent earn every point. Also, take your carefully learned match play observations to the practice court and use them to build a better tennis playing you.
Yup! More videos like these please. This was humdinger of a contest and presented in a very entertaining way. Kudos to Kevin for winning the second set after getting breadsticked in the first set. Would love to see how do you guys approach a tiebraker. Live analysis was great but maybe you can make a companion video where you guys are analysing this match together discussing the strategies and crucial points in the match.Would be interesting if you could also share the info about the gear u guys were using i.e. racquet, strings, string tension etc.
honestly the way this match is portrayed in the beginning is how most players feel in matches with all the pressure its pretty cool to watch tennis in an almost movie style example lol
That was awesome guys! Great tips along with some great editing, couldn’t ask for better content! Keep up the good work I’m eating up all this great in game strategy and self coaching and evaluating!!!
Good stuff! A few observations: Ian has a really good serve and the deep high balls with little pace was giving Kevin some problems with his power game. Kevin was hitting with more pace and was effective when he could take time from Ian. Would be interested to know the percentage of games won when the winner would win the first point of the game. Do guys feel that first point of the game was the most important?
That was a lot of fun to watch! Hearing your thoughts, especially in the more contested second set were informative and great coaching to us rec players. I thought it interesting that even in the adjustments each of you made there were clear elements of your natural tendencies coming through. Looking forward to the next match!
Very entertaining guys! Thanks! Kevin, a quick question for you if I may: I generally try to pick on my opponent's weaker shot, which is typically the backhand. I noticed you hitting a lot more to Ian's forehand side. Was that a conscious effort or were you reverting to the side to which you generally hit (assuming that you mostly play right-handed players)? It seemed to me, particularly when Ian was at the net, you went after his forehand side instead of the backhand.
Great! This form is excellent, viewers will learn a lot just from taking part of mindset and different tactics due to what is going on the court for the moment. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this video. It might help! I can't seem to win any of my official single matches (0 wins and 18 losses, since I started late 2016) :) It is really strange. Things that throw me off are: "everything", well it feels like that. But I have some examples: 1. During play I am thinking about the score and if I'm leading, I am thinking "ok just make this point and you have it" but the result is :D even at 40-0 I still lose the point. 2. I come up with some great shot and the guy accidently hits it on the frame or something else and miraculously makes the point--> This one really ticks me off especially when I feel I'm missing shots at a few inches out or in the top of the net. This usually happens at crucial points. 3. Scared of double faulting. This used to be a real issue when I started out and somehow sneaks back into a match sometimes. 4. Unrealiable one handed backhands. I try to hit them more and more, but as a result I miss more shots. Shots I would easily make if I run around my backhand. If my opponents just hits to my backhand, I lose and also because It kinda gets me extremely nervous when the ball flies to my backhand. 5. Hitting against people with unorthodox techniques. You all know these guys, the guy who chops every ball or has that strange short swing forehand or squash shot or moonballing or slicing or just blocking every ball back slowly. Somehow I know if I'm up against a guy like this, I start doubting my own ability to hit the ball. I don't know, usually I feel like an idiot for losing! 6. Getting a huge lead 5-1 and losing 6 games straight in a row after. This happened to me last week. I don't understand, but somehow all my shots started to fail and it started with missing 2 short balls. 7. People talking or things happening close by as I am tossing the ball up, this makes me miss my serve 99 % of the time. 8. just thinking about the score during play. 9. complete loss of focus. I think everyone will recognise some things I am saying, but today I feel like I have all the mental problems that are possible and it is really frustrating. All I can do now is get my technique even better so I don't need the mental game anymore ;) or just quit playing competively for a while.
I really enjoy watching you guys. Thanks!!! It looks to me that Kevin produce the better shots and have bette technical skils while Ian is the one that better play the game. Many time I'm in this position when the outside viewer see me at the better player on court while at the end i do not win the match.
Thanks Ian & Kevin, What a game, will you do a last set? But it's not really the same as the 3rd set... Ian your volley is too impressive, so in control, so precise. Your serve is really great too. Wonder why you only slice on your back hand, but on the other hand, nothing wrong with that... as far the ball goes to other side and you don't get punish...
Man this is awesome. I hope y'all keep this up. Avengers 4 was the sequel I was waiting for but this is a close second. Who would y'all say is yall's favorite player?
Kevin really settled down in this set using his weapons of serve and forehand well. He was more aggressive in coming to the net and chose very tactically of when to come in. It seems his lack of consistency is what may hold him back from being a 6.0 cuz he has all the shots and athleticism to be at that level. Ian plays such a smooth, intelligent game and really makes you have to play winners to beat him. He doesn’t have quite the athleticism or natural ability that Kevin has but he is so crafty and has great counterpunching skills. Thanks for the insight commentary.
10 point tiebreak would have been appropriate but as two people who work together, I can see the benefit of a tie :) Great series, great strategies. Really enjoyed watching. Looking forward to the same format on doubles!
Fun video to watch... what was interesting honestly, was the realisation that these guys were just casual/amateur club level players. In terms of UA-cam tennis guys, I would say iRacer is realistically a step above these guys; much more consistent depth and power and way more solid (hardly any shanks). Tomas from Feel Tennis is probably around iRacer's level. TenFitMen, Alex and Simon, obviously, yet another level altogether. Either way it's good to have a variety of level and content.
Hey Ian and team.. it's been a long time 😁. I'm gonna comment this match and Ian your not gonna like it.😂😂😂. So Ian... poor technique and Kevin.. your a little bit better. Now if I start to count the number of winners comparing to the number of unforced errors the difference is just huge but this game...now THIS GAME!!!! is just super interesting because it's THE example of how the mental factor is winning and not your technical level.this is what they teach in tennis schools, this is what I was thought and now this is what I teach... REGULARITY!!! don't try to hit winners, keep it simple and just play one more ball then your opponent. Don't give them to much rhythm because the harder you hit the faster the ball will be returned. I'm gonna stop here and move to the water bottle contest 😁😁😁. Nice to see you again guys!!!!
Great match! It's only appropriate that it ends in a tie, the rematch will be even more anticipated. I hope to see more videos like this, perhaps a mixed doubles set to show us how to work on strategy?
I like your comments between games, every match is always an internal conversation ! Great match tho... Next I want to see Kirby vs Megan with the WTA grunts :)
Brilliant concept guys, keep them coming! (and nice SEO too, even though I'm a sub, I saw this video as the 3rd video thumbnail for the generic search "tennis"! next to Federer news!!) ;-)
Watched this when it was played about 3 years ago. Did you two ever finish the match? I know Kevin has moved on. Unless there is some type of tension you should still get together and play each other if you're anywhere close by each other.
In that 5-6 game. Ian came in on a serve and let one go over his head and out. It's such a split second decision. Many times in doubles I've jumped up to hit the ball only to be told it was going out. Is there a rule of thumb for how to make that judgment call?
It's a great question, Sifo. Honestly, I think it simply comes with lots and lots of reps at high intensity. Frankly, it takes a lot of experience letting the ball go and simply finding out if you were right or not....and then adjusting your judgement for the next one.
This was a very nice match to watch especially now during a time when there is no pro tennis to watch... Ian, you are such a smart player and do a lot with the strokes that you have, but I can't believe you didn't go over your backhand even once in this match! What's the point of working on your topspin backhand if you never use it! Okay, just teasing here, but even Graf hit a backhand drive once in a while!
Just an observation for Kevin. You hit more setup shots towards the end especially when Ian was at the net. Earlier, you were making unforced errors on the first passing shot attempt. You were not forcing Ian to hit a winning volley on most of his net advances. You were able to turn the tables a couple of times towards the end by not hitting an outright winner, but by hitting a solid passing shot or lob that resulted in a defensive shot from Ian. From there, you attacked and won each point.
The instructional videos are great, but watching a live match and seeing how you guys try to make adjustments was even better. I hope videos like this keep coming.
Most definitely, Joe! Glad you enjoyed it.
The between play comentary makes this. Greatest tennis youtube series I've ever seen. More of this layout forever please :)
The between play commentary is worst ever lol.
I would love to see more of these! :)
Absolutely, more coming!
Kevin doesn't look like a big guy, but he packs a punch. Ian is very crafty and smart. I'd like to see you play that other utuber guy that always posts his matches; iracer?
He's really solid, that would be fun!
@iracer

Very unique and clever video guys. You certainly think "out-of-the-box" regarding your productions which is very refreshing.
Well done.
Appreciate that, Chairman!
The beginning of Real Tennis! Very cool
From part 1 to part 3, this not only increased to a fun conclusion, but made me think about so much; tactics, knowing your opponent, fight, aggressive vs. passive, knowing your own game, and so much more. Kudos for taking the time to do this!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Yoshi!

This was great. Enjoyed hearing the thought process, strategies and adjustments.
Glad you enjoyed it, Tom!
The editing on this is top quality
Appreciate that, Samuel!
Thanks so much for posting this series! I hope there is more to come and more like this in the future!
There's an extra level of learning that I get when 2 good coaches/instructors play each other. It's great that they can detach themselves from the match as players and comment and instruct on what is going on. That was a great match.
Kirby vs Megan!
Great videos. Loved the explanations between the sets! Would be great to see the last set :)
Glad you enjoyed it, Leon!
This series is more fun to watch than pro matches. Please create more contents similar to this, and we would really like to see a rematch where you guys can finish!
Most definitely, John!
This was as fun as watching a Wimbledon match :)
Appreciate that, James!
You’ve always got the dogged fight that brings you back though :-)
Awesome fun guys, keep it up!
hearing about the adjustments from the players is amazing. I watched this closer than a classic pro game.
I would love to see more of these videos in the future. This format works, it's interesting, and I think it has a lot of potential.
More on the way!
Well done. Both of you. I think the commentary helped you two as much as it helps us all. Thank you again.
Our pleasure!
Total win for us. Wow. I loved seeing how you each came to the court with your histories and tools, and showed us how you were able to adjust them to fit the situation. This was awesome!!!!! I loved the commentating and strategy shifts! Really helps with mental talk during the match!!! Keep it coming. Thank you!!!!
You're so welcome, Michele!

i try to emulate you guys when i play in my matches, both mentally and physically. thanks for the amazing content
That was a fun match to watch. Yes, Kirby vs Megan too!
Thanks for watching, Mark!
favorite series of videos on the channel
So happy to hear that, Mason!
Really helpful stuff. Love the commentary from you guys walking us through that changes you're making on the fly. May be too much work with all the other videos you have coming, but I'd be interested in you guys breaking down your own form on some of the winners and errors.
This is awesome! I love the commentary in between games, it's so insightful. Maybe we could petition the atp to make players do this!
Ian. You're doing great. Kevin, same goes for you too. Thank you both for your conveyance throughout the match, the internal idiosyncrasies, that we as viewers fail to realise. Keep up the good work 💪😁💪
Thanks 👍
Great Vids! The same for Doubles would be great!
Definitely going to happen...
No way am i watching doubles : Poor Kevin
Agreed! Maybe do a mixed doubles with Megan and Kirby?
Very nice concept, and well done. Very instructive. Shows how thinking is just as important as technique, skill and athleticism. In tennis, "know thyself" is so important. What do you do well? Interesting question, Vernon. I'll have to go back through and tally it up. Thanks for watching!
This whole series was awesome guys.
Thanks, Matthew! Appreciate your support.
That was a lot of fun to watch! Hearing your thoughts, especially in the more contested second set were informative and great coaching to us rec players. I thought it interesting that even in the adjustments each of you made there were clear elements of your natural tendencies coming through. Looking forward to the next match!
And the music and editing added some fun drama! Way to be ET!
Appreciate the feedback, Shakeem!
Great video series! I enjoyed both of your insights during the match.
love these videos with the commentary during match play! Excellent work guys!!
Thanks, Stefan!
Great series lads. Really enjoyed it! Nice to get an insight to your thought process in a match!
Brilliant mini series would love to see the pair of you compete against some of your students if they'll allow it
Interesting idea! Glad you enjoyed the videos, Luke.

Glad you enjoyed it, Tomas!
Cool series! I'm a 5.0 player/coach in the milwaukee area and would be excited to play some sets with you if you need more people! Cheers!
Hey Scott! Pretty sure I know who you are.....Ira said maybe the two of you could play some doubles with us?
@@EssentialTennis I don't know an Ira, but I'm always up for doubles!
Ah, definitely shoot me an email then: ian AT essentialtennis DOT com.
Haha Scotty B
@@EssentialTennis I live in the North Shore area so I'm down for a playing video anytime as well!
What rackets are you guys using btw, just curious :v
Great video! Love the on the go analysis!
I’m enjoying this series what camera did you use to record this footage was it a GoPro? Thanks for any info.
It's a Panasonic GH5 with a Panasonic 7-14mm lens.
Great camera and great lens thanks for the info!
awesome watching this match....great job gentlemen !
The 3 most interesting videos in a long while!!! More! :-)
Thank you, Anders!
I really like Ian's serve, I wish my first serve can be that good. Especially, his placement of first serve.
Thanks for watching, Jason!
Awesome game coaches! 👌👌👌 more of these please!
gooood stuff by Kevin at the end. he definitely plays to his weapons but has underrated defense
Thank you for this video. It might help! I can't seem to win any of my official single matches (0 wins and 18 losses, since I started late 2016) :) It is really strange. Things that throw me off are: "everything", well it feels like that. But I have some examples:

Try drinking ONE beer before you play. :)
Any luck improving?
I really enjoy watching you guys. Thanks!!!
It looks to me that Kevin produce the better shots and have bette technical skils while Ian is the one that better play the game.
Many time I'm in this position when the outside viewer see me at the better player on court while at the end i do not win the match.
Same here
Damn! Kevin, that forehand is a monster. Great tennis!
Thanks for watching, Chuck!
Thanks Ian & Kevin, What a game, will you do a last set? But it's not really the same as the 3rd set... Ian your volley is too impressive, so in control, so precise. Your serve is really great too. Glad you enjoyed it, Ryan!
Man this is awesome. I hope y'all keep this up. Avengers 4 was the sequel I was waiting for but this is a close second.
Who would y'all say is yall's favorite player?
Glad you enjoyed it, JJamil!
Kevin really settled down in this set using his weapons of serve and forehand well. He was more aggressive in coming to the net and chose very tactically of when to come in. It seems his lack of consistency is what may hold him back from being a 6.0 cuz he has all the shots and athleticism to be at that level. 10 point tiebreak would have been appropriate but as two people who work together, I can see the benefit of a tie :)
Great series, great strategies. Really enjoyed watching. Looking forward to the same format on doubles!
We really had no time left, haha. We're both totally fine with losing....happens all the time around the "office" 😆
does Ian not have a backhand? Steve Johnson style?
Fun video to watch... what was interesting honestly, was the realisation that these guys were just casual/amateur club level players. In terms of UA-cam tennis guys, I would say iRacer is realistically a step above these guys; much more consistent depth and power and way more solid (hardly any shanks). Great fun to watch. And based on your video about tennis rules, 7:30 should have been Kevin's point :)
I'm just so sad that this video is one year old :(
I need more of this!
Wow, time flies fast. Hopefully we'll do more soon!
Hey Ian and team.. it's been a long time 😁. I'm gonna comment this match and Ian your not gonna like it.😂😂😂. So Ian... poor technique and Kevin.. your a little bit better. We'll absolutely do doubles soon. Thanks for watching!
Just great! Where is the third set? Come on.
Is this in wisconsin
How come you guys have not done another one of these?
We've been talking about doing more....maybe soon
I like your comments between games, every match is always an internal conversation ! Great match tho... Next I want to see Kirby vs Megan with the WTA grunts :)
Glad you enjoyed it, Matias!
Thanks for the videos. Looking forward to the next ones. Cheers!
Thanks for your support, Jonathan!
Love how both guys tennis seemed to go up a level as it got closer to the finish line.
We both hate to lose! haha
I don’t want to lose. Unfortunately my level doesn’t always go up at the end of a tight match 🤔
Did Kevin leave or has he always had his channel too?
Brilliant concept guys, keep them coming! (and nice SEO too, even though I'm a sub, I saw this video as the 3rd video thumbnail for the generic search "tennis"! next to Federer news!!) ;-)
Glad you enjoyed it, Olivier!
The editing🔥🔥🔥
Awesome, Kevin. Great power and stealth.
Thanks for watching as always, Doc!
love this series
Glad you enjoyed it, Dewi!
This is actually pretty good I like it!
Watched this when it was played about 3 years ago. Did you two ever finish the match? I know Kevin has moved on. Unless there is some type of tension you should still get together and play each other if you're anywhere close by each other.
please keep doing vids like these you guys should play each other more
Most definitely, more on the way, Abdul.
@@EssentialTennis appreciated, love to see two tennis instructors play against each other and analyse game by game, i can really take a lot from this.
You must play a third set! Vegas is posting odds!!!
😂🤑💰
In that 5-6 game. Ian came in on a serve and let one go over his head and out. It's such a split second decision. Many times in doubles I've jumped up to hit the ball only to be told it was going out. Is there a rule of thumb for how to make that judgment call?
It's a great question, Sifo. Honestly, I think it simply comes with lots and lots of reps at high intensity. Frankly, it takes a lot of experience letting the ball go and simply finding out if you were right or not....and then adjusting your judgement for the next one.
Will there ever Be A part 4?:()
Not in this same series, no. More competition to come.
Essential Tennis - Lessons and Instruction for Passionate Players Shame, I voted for Ian to win the third set😅
Extra extra! Outstanding video and really insightful. Love it.
Thanks for watching, Steve!
I enjoy your videos, thanks!
Thanks for your support, Juan!
Great stuff guys!!
Whoa kevin turning up the heat, so exciting to see what will happen next
Glad you enjoyed it, Edward.
The summer blockbuster music had me watching.
🎼
Wow, who knew Ian was just a pusher with no backhand
🙄 that was unnecessary. How about you post a video of yourself, Gary Morris, so we can critique it?
Really interesting. Thanks
nice video, i would love to be coached by kevin!!!!
Good observation!
Thats how to play
Ok if your plAying great you could play by going for winners but one has to be "on"! Usually you will need patience and grind opponent a bit
more of those videos! like!
Awesome! One on doubles would be great too.
Doubles most definitely on the way, JR. Thanks for watching!
