Cole. On fire. Nice to see how you play when you loosened up. Allow yourself to play your game. Don't let the environment dictate your performance. Play like you practice. Good way to get in the zone and push in ahead. Mark is playing well, but he has raised his bar based on your reputation, causing his errors/loose game to get broken. Thanks Ian for having me on ET! I’ve always been a big fan of your channel, and it’s really cool that I get to be a part of it. Playing this match against was a blast, and I’m having fun watching the videos and reading the comments.

Exactly! Very unique format. You have a great series here. Keep it up. The camera angle is good. Really enjoy the players' comments on strategy, shot selection, and challenges. Great insight into what they're trying to do and why. It ramps up the emotion and intensity. Love Ian's commentary to help draw out insight and strategy. Kudos to every player in this series. Great learning experience. Can't wait for part 2 and from this series.
Yeah big take away from this is the active college player isn't looking to crush every ball with a winner, he plays ultra solid high percentage shots until an opportunity opens up before going for anything.
I'm still watching first time, haven't read a single comment, glued to my seat here, but have to just say right now 12:46 - This is a 27 stroke high level rally. I don't see ANY 4.5 level players on this court. Damn that was freaking NICE! Pace changes, safe shots, neutral shots, aggressive shots, everything in there from both guys. DAMN. Gettin' some popcorn right now...Wimbledon, kiss it.
This was definitely not a disappointment to watch. What a match so far! Solid hitting from both players, and I really like how they speak to the camera between changeovers. That's where you really get a feel of their mentality. Can't wait for part 2!
I love this! I coach 5 of my siblings ( actually 6 but only 5 of them play competitively) and this is exactly what I have been looking for!!! I believe getting good players like these guys to talk about what they are going through and doing in the match to change up play, as they are playing, is a great idea and really helpful for younger players like my siblings. I am going to have all 5 of them watch this. Please do more of these videos!!!
The consistency and pace at which Mark and Cole hit the ball is really impressive. What's even more impressive is their foot speed to get into position to hit a shot and then recover for the next one.
Watching this channel grow and evolve over the years has been super cool. From the old videos with basic stroke instruction filmed on public courts to what this channel has become it's pretty crazy to see. Shout out to Ian for helping so many with his content.
Same here, its kinda nicer to watch other "mortals" to play :D they make same kind of mistakes, and you can see yourself getting as good as them, or close atleast. Watching pro matches, u cant see that :D

The serving of Gold and Platinum content never stops on this channel. Mark and Cole are amazing players! can't wait for part 2. Hope you're feeling better Ian!
Totally enjoyed this. Couple observations: Cole's serve is really tough - it shows how strong your serve needs to be to compete above 4.5. He also has great form on his groundstrokes which leads to easy power - once they get into a rally his consistency and depth seems to be winning out. So Mark's got to focus on other tactics to gain any ground.
This is awesome. Some really good sidebars from Cole about his strategy. Also the editing is getting much better! And we now get serve speed? Great stuff Ian.
This is just great tennis and an excellent video! I wanna see top tennis youtube coaches play in this channel like the match with scott and nate before.
Great match! At 32, I just started taking professional coaching to improve my game. This was exciting and motivating to watch! I really wanna be at this level.
Fun episode! Really insightful commentary and analysis between points/games. These guys are almost too good to be relatable to the majority of rec players, but just at that level where they still face some of the challenges the rest of us face. Still looking very forward to Ian vs Ben. That match will be supremely instructive!

@@EssentialTennis can we have a highlight reel of me just eating $20 worth of Taco Bell?! I am sure @local tennis players and @benjamin sell would enjoy
Interesting fact: When I played college tennis back in the early/mid 90's at River Falls, UW-Whitewater was one of the middle to lower tier teams in the conference. UW La Crosse was the team to beat and they had a #1 guy who transferred from Madison. Fast forward 10+ years and they become a fairly well known ranked program, competing with the likes of Gustavus, and even had Bjorn Borg's son on the team for a stint.
Looking forward to part 2. It seems like the gap is larger in score but I get the feeling Mark can come back if the errors drop. Solid playing from both sides.
Great video! Very enjoyable to watch. Just one suggestion for how the points are edited: could you always include the toss for those of us who want to observe how these two excellent players go about hitting such good serves?
I can't agree with it more. It just different from your imagination of playing when you watch it. I've been there too....mostly I can't finish it.....haha
Hi Ian, I really love your videos! I am a junior tennis player and pulled a muscle in my calf yesterday during my tourney (somehow I still won that match loll) but today I ended up retiring and was rlly disappointed. I've dealt with quite a few injuries this yr (am probably going to be out for around 2-3 weeks to a month due to this) and I was wondering if you had any advice because I am really sad I won't be able to get back on the court for a little. :( Thanks!
Hi Jay. I have gone through numerous injuries throughout my career that have left me sidelined from tennis for up to 3 months. The most important thing you can do is continue to exercise what you can and do rehab for your injury while you aren’t competing. Also, don’t be too hard on yourself when returning from injury because it can take a couple weeks or months to return to form.
They are well suited to each other and you might look at them and see a lot of similarities. However mark gets his power from swinging hard and fast while cole gets his power from good footwork and taking the ball very early. He’s saving tons of energy that way. But good matc. The right shot at the right time and toward the end Mark started using that nice slice he has very effective! Coles solid all around great kick serve too. Mark could adjust to this guy if he plays him a few times.
Cole may have grown up playing from age 5-6 with ton our junior Tournaments. I watched few of Mark's points and he can use a stable stand when he strikes the ball.
What a high quality match! Mark is an intense opponent, but Cole is something next level! Do I see Cole with a Prince racquet? What's he sporting? (I just like Prince... I'm kind of on an island that way...)
@essentialtennis and I were discussing the possibility of that. the rendering at 60fps AND 4k is arduous to say the least. In my channel I do have some 4k 60fps when reviewing tennis strings for BRoll, and it sometimes takes 4 hours or so to completely export. And I have a GForce 3090.

I think the college player is a good athlete and a good player... I also think his backhand is the stronger side, I would just play every ball deep heavy to the forehand until it broke down, follow through is inconsistent and would break down after a while. I think more extension and catching the racket would force a more consistent follow through. 11 utr and above would just be able to hit through his forehand side.

@@colelindwall9284 I would say try to catch the racket on the follow through at least for a while to get used to the swing path and have your coach do lots of hand feeding to become more comfortable generating pace! your Serve and backhand are already money too!
Interesting, but enjoyable match-up. The commentary from both players was very telling. Cole had a specific strategy on what he wanted to do. Not so much for Mark. Mark was talking more about technical stuff. Nice to see a one-handed backhand from a young guy. Seems to be his best shot, but not sure how consistent it is. I also noted that Mark seemed to be much further back behind the baseline compared to Cole. Very difficult to make offensive shots from that far back which requires more of a grinding type of game. Mark seemed to hit too much to the same side of the court too. Rarely did I seem him hit down the line and Cole seemed to have caught that so he didn't need to defend the whole court as much.
Mark is a very tough player to beat, as he has proved. He makes everyone work for every point, giving away very little. His consistency together with his ability to read his opponent. Could make him win the match. Playing the mental game but in a goodway.he is very aware of what is happening on the other side of the court In real time in game comments proof it, that makes these video's most interesting to watch. I see Cole struggle to finish the points more & more, this could be seed of doubt Mark is talking about in preview teaser of part 2. This Match Isn't over, still to close to call a winner. Where other results should have been accepted by now that match is over, Biden won. This one is all to play for!
Longest rally: 27 shots (SET 1: 4-2, 15-15) Total shots: 184 Average rally: 5.3 shots Cole seems to be dominating in most statistical areas -- esp total points won -- yet Mark's only down a break. Retrieving that break is going to be tough, though, since service points won is the category where Cole seems most dominant.
It sure is close... Unfortunately we don't have a frame of the ball contacting the ground (the one you see is after the bounce). But cut Cole some slack! We'd like him to come back 😅
Looked out to me, if you pause at the right time you can see the ball coming up after the bounce, and it looks like where it bounced was completely out
good match, im a roger fan, need to control better de backhand and do less slices. Need to be like neo roger in 2017, a powerfull back hand and a monster forehand with a few slices here and there.
Hi! I have big problem with my forehand which is that i can not hit it cleanly and it feels like im doing something wrong Very badly. I cant get power easily and when i try to get lot of power the Ball goes 5,7 miles too long every time. I do hit it net Very often too. Do you have any tips to hit cleaner? I have focused watching the Ball but it does not make a difference. If you have any tips and time to share them i would love to know them!

Any chance we can find out what string/racquets they’re using ?
I'm sure the boys will chime in...
Prince Textreme Warrior 100 with Luxilon 4G strings
Yonex EZone 98 (2020) with Solinco Hyper G 16 at 55lbs.
Great analysis! Part 2 coming soon 🙂

Cole seems to be dominating in most statistical areas -- esp total points won -- yet Mark's only down a break. Retrieving that break is going to be tough, though, since service points won is the category where Cole seems most dominant.
12:04 wicked shot. Way to get there Mark.
💪
What grip does Cole use?
semi-western on forehand. Flatter grip on backhand

8:15 just deep? that was in bro.
It sure is close... Unfortunately we don't have a frame of the ball contacting the ground (the one you see is after the bounce). But cut Cole some slack! We'd like him to come back 😅
Looked out to me, if you pause at the right time you can see the ball coming up after the bounce, and it looks like where it bounced was completely out
that was definitely out! I remember that point and I did feel the ball sail long after it left my tennis strings.
Mark’s forehand looks weird but kinda smooth at the same time
kind of like my face
Damn good production Ian. Just curious... when you speak, I hear a bunch sounds like a truck backing up.... can you explain??
There's a shipping container facility close to the tennis court 😊
He broke his string. Two more and I got a chance lol
🤣
it never said in any USTA handbook that I cant sabotage my opponents equipment :)
Hey Ian, what do you use to clock the serves? I can't seem to find a club that has equipment. thanks!
good match, im a roger fan, need to control better de backhand and do less slices.
