for a Government to spend more on their own home grown product is not considered as wasteful. It is in fact help the local company to survive and saving more jobs.
It is the most under-rated aircraft by the West. It has ZERO incident record over the years, long distance efficiency and more cheaper than it's Western counterparts. Wish I can have one too 😁
In 1985 I traveled once from Sochi to Saint-Petersburg on the predecessor, the Ilyushin 86. Nice and comfortable but the engines had not enough power. I think the problem should be solved by now with the 96 model.
I'd love to fly on an il96, but the aircraft I admire most and regret never having travelled on, was the famous Russian answer to the great VC10; their IL62. I can still remember those powerfully screaming engines and it was a large aircraft for its time. I believe it was also at one time; either THE, or one of the longest range aircraft in the world! Putting aside politics, it's a regret to see the decline of Russia's commercial aircraft industry. With their then 90s repositioning towards a westerly programme, it provided a great opportunity to adapt, achieve more global safety accreditation, and consolidate to produce and deliver planes to a more global market. Whilst I know some airlines are incestuously tied to certain manufacturers (and we know this when a 'then fledging' airbus tried to break into the global market) i don't quite understand why that never fully happened. Also surprised no other global aviation partnerships were then forged (i know the USA fleeted with some early partnership tests on TU144 (the only supersonic commercial aircraft other than Concorde).I do however welcome they have partnered with China to somewhat rebuild that market. Markets need competition at every level. The benefit? Lower/ more competitively priced, but safe air vehicles which believe it or not, should result in lower seat prices for everyone. Profit is not always about maximised revenues, but the effective management and manipulation of ones costs.
Yep, I recently saw one approaching landing at Moscow Vnukovo airport (I live not far from it). I believe that at least one Tu-154 is still in service as well. Tu-134 is out, as it was replaced by Sukhoi Superjet. UPD: today I had a flight from Vnukovo and saw some of those government aircraft. Actually, there's one more that was left unmentioned, Antonov An-148.
Enjoyed the video, it's something the Western World doesn't get a lot of info about. I understand from another video that the Il-96 has an excellent safety record too.
Why not do a video on the Sukhoi Superjet SSJ100? I flew in it with Aeroflot from Moscow to Kazan last year. It felt far more comfortable than a 320 which seems to bounce around a lot when landing - unlike the Sukhoi or a 747? I know there have been issues - but useful small aircraft to highlight.
Even Canada's CC-15001 has gold fittings, seems to be standard for any aircraft carrying a head of state, in Canada's case, it the aircraft used by the Queen or her representive on tours of Canada.
Beautiful plane, more than an incremental upgrade over the beautiful Il-86. It is very Russian looking, it has a nice character and reflects a time before CAD and AI-assisted design process was the norm. There is a lot of personal touch to it. It has the charm of the Airbus A300 and A310 or Boeing 707s and early Boeing 747. In real terms, it's not cost competitive to run even against the A340-200/300 series which were not particularly competitive to run either. Had ETOPS not been extended it may have had more of a market. If purchased on loan its cheaper price and interest 'might' be able to compete but there are much cheaper alternatives available, so it's really a niche market. The real weakness is its engines, PS90A is not good enough to the CFM56 series (to be fair, it's a leap from the D30 engines).but sad truth is, it's not competitive enough. However, the Russians may have to purchase them with updated PS90A3 engines given the sanctions so it may get a new lease on life.
The IL-96 was developed as a replacement for the old passenger Il-86. The Russian government ordered the new IL-96-300 because they performed while during operation, as did the predecessor of the IL-86. During the entire population of the IL-86, 4 people died, the IL-96 had no deaths. 24 IL-96 aircraft were produced. Many of the equipment in these aircraft is compatible with Il-86, Tu-204/214. Therefore, you don't have to worry, there are quite enough spare parts for this aircraft.
They still have a couple in inventory. A few were loaded up with cronies and other shady figures a few years ago and sent to Venezuela to prop up the illegitimate Maduro regime there.
I think mc21 range is even shorter than tu204, so they wont replace anything otherr than ssj100 in the government fleet. Next russian presidential aircraft will be a totally new one. A russian widebody twinjet probably named il106 or mc31 or something else
I think these none Boeing and Airbus are getting enough attention. Comac C919, the once known C Series and Mitsubishi MRJs. Airlines should give these jets more attention.
Once the C919 actually gets introduced it will get attention. But its not even ready yet so not sure whats more to report about that hasnt already been done
i really like this plane. the vertical tail is too big - costs extra drag (fuel economy wise). due to Western sanctions, this aircraft could be in greater numbers. its engine efficiency needs an update - high bypass engines are the norm now. having extra aircraft to scavenge parts is a good idea. as well as mechanics trained to fix this particular brand. Russians take pride in their work, and it shows in the visual appearance of this aircraft. i'm surprised the Chinese don't bother with this aircraft(?)...it's a deal.

Equally comparable to the US Air Force One B747. What the US can do, Russia can as well.
Is that why the Il-96 had to be refitted with American Pratt & Whitney PW2337 engines because nobody bought it except Cuba?
