An Epic Flight - Flying the Ilyushin IL-76 Cargo Transporter to Iraq
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 чер 2022
- This week, I flew on SilkWay Ilyushin IL-76 transporter from Baku to Erbil, Iraq. The flight was completely different from the Western conventional airplane. It took a strong team of 5 men to operate including 2 pilots, a. flight engineer, a radio controller and a navigator. The flight also carries a loadmaster and 2 technicians.
Before takeoff, the captain and loadmaster briefly introduced the cockpit and the cargo cabin. Inside the cabin, it has a crane system and ramp system able to lower to load without infrastructure. This particular IL-76TD-90 has new stage 4 noise compliant engines (Perm PS90 engines) instead of the older and noisier Soloviev D-30 engines.
Our flight took 2.5 hours from Baku to Erbil. After dropping off the cargo, we flew back to Baku empty. The view from the navigator seat through the glass nose was amazing. Watch the full video of the entire IL-76 flight and cargo operation.
The Ilyushin Il-76 is a multi-purpose, fixed-wing, four-engine turbofan strategic airlifter designed by the Soviet Union's Ilyushin design bureau. It was first planned as a commercial freighter in 1967. For more information, visit: www.silkwayairlines.com/fleet...

LOVE this aircraft. Literally. Jumped from it as a paratrooper, flown in it as a passenger, loaded it as an airline official. Almost fell from the top once. Love of my life.
Its a beautiful airplane and seems like its been adapted to do almost anything a plane can do, even to drop water on forest fires.
ow. i respect u
Da komrad, we air dropped baboushks full of vodka and crates of pickles all-over the glorious republic for many years. Now, komrad, we drop metric boat loads of vodka all over our vast nation, drink up Russian solders, da komrads, long sleep the socialist republics hardest working soldiers!
You Lucky Dog!!!
Very cool!
This aircraft is a legend. More than 1000 of them were produced and they are flying in almost every country of the world. Russia is about to release new modernised version of this legend.
It's still produced! And this is already an upgraded version with the PS-90A engine. Previews plane had D-30 engine.

In the early 90, as a journalist, I flew with such a beast to Bangladesh (packed with relief goods), after a devastated cyclone hit the country. We landed in Dhaka during a fierce tropical thunderstorm (child's play for our Russian pilot). I was sitting with the navigator and had an awsome view (through the windows below our feet) of the rain and lightning flashes and the extremely bumpy landing on a flooded tarmac... Never forgot that flight because I was scared like hell!
Hey man, I'm from Bangladesh. The situation has improved so much in Bangladesh now.
@@Acepilot1312 aren't any devastating cyclones hit the country never more?
@@user-fh4le1pn8o yes, they did happen in the mid 2000s (search ‘Cyclone Aila and Sidor) but nowadays, we’re pretty much doing great for the most part.
Our infrastructure has improved vastly since then.
@@Acepilot1312 well, I said it just because the topic starter didn't crticazed Bangladesh's aircraft infrastructure. He just tell us how it was landing on IL-76 during the cyclone time.
I'm sorry if he bothered you
@@user-fh4le1pn8o it’s okay, I’m not bothered by it at all. I’m just saying that our country doesn’t get hit by all that many cyclones as before. :)

The Il-76 is a splendid aircraft, and a true jewel of Soviet aviation. This wonderful video does it justice!
Fans of the IL-76 should check out the 2010 movie "Kandagar" about an IL-76 forced to land in Afghanistan by the Taliban. It is based on a true story and the diary of the Captain of the plane. The crew were held hostage for over a year, but eventually managed to escape in the plane! Its an incredible story with lots of great footage of our favourite plane. :)
thanks for title of the movie I am a Fan of soviets cargos
@@peterlonter9053 There is also a book about IL76 post soviet operations: "Outlaws, Inc." Good read. Also on audible.
But for some chauvinistuc reason they replaced ethnic Tatar Muslim captain who was in real story, with ethnic Russian in this film
Great video Sam! That landing in Iraq was butter. I love the gray haired guy(manager/owner) that you've had on a few times. He's so enthusiastic and seems to love showing people what his folks do.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, Samir (my father) is great character. We all love him!
Nice video Sam! That's kind of unusual flight plan over the world we could never think at about it... Could be great to have othe video from Erbil.
@@mdstate829 It's a joke, but also it's Samir sincere personality and enthusiasm...
What a beauty! The green cockpit with all those steam gauges and manual engine controls tells a story of the lost airmanship.

The planes made by the former Soviet Union look really cool because they look lumpy like muscles. thanks for the great video!!!!!

Boy, I could tell you a great story about an IL-76 experience I had a long time ago, but I better not. Suffice to say, it is a very impressive and solid airplane with "quick disconnects" everywhere, if you know what I mean. It was nice to revisit this wonderful aircraft here with Sam giving the tour. I remember the incredible APU's capability at heating things up quickly inside a pretty much frozen airframe. I also remember the heavy two piece rivetted aluminium intake covers, but they did their job well in a snow storm. I remember being impressed at the common sense layout of the cargo bay. A true work horse ready for anything, anywhere. Thanks for the tour!
IL-76 is an amazing, impressive machine. Love its unmistakable sound. Flying one of these beasts is definitely on my bucket list!
Hearing a IL-76 with Kusnetsov engines makes one having orgasms through his ears! 😀
That landing in Baku really cracked me up! The Pilot in Command is holding the yoke; the First Officer holds his yoke too, and the Flight Engineer handles the throttle levers. All that remains is for the Navigator to play saxophone! 😂
"You have control. I have control. WE have control!" 😂😂😂
Everybody has control looool. What a beast. It feels over the top and so amusing. Soviet aviation is something to behold.
AMAZING!!
Very nice man! First time I've seen a re-engined IL-76. It looked to be in really good shape. You did a really good job of getting to know the plane and its crew. That company must love your videos because you made them look very sharp and professional.
Totally agree with you, yes he did, and yes they are.
This plane looks so great, i love it. Soviet cargoplanes have all an interesting design, but the IL- 76 is really an eyecatcher. Nice video
She's a beauty. Rugged built strong . The cockpit is definitely Soviet nostalgia. I would like to ride in the navigators position.
Greetings to my Azeri brothers, awesome cargo plane and lovely crew.
Wow, I’m glad to see old planes still flying strong😃✌🏻
Russian military still uses them as well as many modified versions. This plane looks awesome imho.
@@sergevtorino agreed
Yes they have good life span too.40 years or so
I believe they are still produced ( in smaller scale ) .. atleast for Russia they would continue to fly for another 30-40 years ..

Memories to last a lifetime. I’d actually prefer that experience to first class. SPECTACULAR
Sam, Thank you so much for bringing this experience to us
Thanks. Agree! It took a lot of effort to arrange to go onboard a rare aircraft such as IL-76 but it is golden memory for me!

The navigator’s “window” reminds me of the B-17. I was privileged to be able to fly in a B-17 many years ago at the annual air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

What a treat, eh!? I flew on Thunderbird in Houston Texas during the Wings over Houston airshow in October 2008. I had gone on board years before that flight as a guest just to see the inside of a B-17. I had flown to Ellington Airfield in my club airplane that day. It was a chance happening that the bomber was outside during a maintenance cycle. Much smaller inside than one would imagine. In flight, it's a solid flying machine!
I miss the nine-0-nine
it's for a bombardier sight - every Soviet cargo plane has the ability to drop bombs
This plane is so cool! Thanks for showing the plane around :) Love the view from the navigator seat ❤
That was so cool!.
Thanks Sam & all the crew for an awesome adventure & stunning views

SAMIR YOU ARE BREAKING THE CAR!
This was an absolutely superb episode! Everything about this episode was perfect. The individual crew members are amazing characters in themselves. This could be a discovery channel show! Great showmanship Sam!!! Bravo!

Hey Sam , thanks for all the hard work and passion you put into your videos , really love what you create for us all. Cheers , Derek.
The Soviet Union was a superpower. They perform many international missions. The pilot was very experienced. Very tough monster and his little fan in the cab. . .
Sam, your videos keep setting the highest standard. I love this aircraft. Love from Montreal Canada 🇨🇦
I have flown (deadheading) three times on this very same aircraft, when I had to go to pick up our B747 in Afghanistan and in Iraq. Sam, this video brought very good memories, thank you for sharing.
Awesome views from the navigator area. Awesome video
What a sympatic crew. You can see that they really enjoy their job and that they are proud of their aircraft.
I have flown with this model in Greece in the fires of 2020...i was the first and only coordinator who ever did a drop of 42 tons of water in Greece!...Amazing aircraft and very different way of flying,....
What a treat. The IL-76 is old school flying at its best. A handsome, practical, strong aircraft. Those Soviet designers knew what they were doing. Love the high wing configuration.
