This video literally explains exactly what happened to me. A few years ago I started transitioning from heat damaged hair to my natural 3A/3B curls (that look very similar to Jayme's). I was using a very heavy shampoo and conditioner that contained both sulphates and silicones and to start with my hair was great, the curls were forming and my hair felt good. Then after around 7 months i noticed my hair felt weaker and thinner and did some research and discovered the curly girl method and the 'damage' that silicones and sulphates do to your hair. I stopped using them completely and purchased the shea moisture coconut and hibiscus shampoo and conditioner. Like Jayme, for quite a while my hair felt good but after a while my scalp got so incredibly itchy, and when i would scratch it i would have loads of buildup under my nails (gross i know!) I was really starting to give up because i didnt know what i was doing wrong. Then i did some more research and learnt about product buildup and why your hair needs sulphates to get rid of it. That wash day, i used a shampoo with sulphates in it and all of the buildup was gone and my scalp didnt feel itchy for the first time in months. Now i use a sulphate shampoo once every two weeks, my hair has got thicker and my curls are even more defined, and the itchiness is gone! I agree that using sulphates and silicones every wash will do damage to your hair, in my personal experiences, but using it once in a while is the only thing that will get rid of product buildup and stop an itchy scalp. Thank you so much Jayme, my curls are looking better than ever thanks to you. I'm sorry this comment is long, but i wanted to share my experiences with other curly girls who may be facing the same problems! xx

Agreed, I just started curly girl method. I'm in two weeks and my hair is absolutley loving it. My curls had turned to waves by daily flat ironing, now they are turning to beautiful 3b and 3A curls. I'm so excited to see how curly my hair will become. I havent worn my hair natural for more then a day at a time for over 20 years. I'm glad to learn about the CGM, and now know of possible build up and itchy scalp. However like you mentioned if I have buildup or any itch I'll remove it with clarifying. I'll use a apple cider vinegar rinse and or a clarifying shampoo with super mild sulfates before resorting to ending my CGM. My hair absolutly loves no sulfates no parabens and most of all it loves no silicones and natural oils.

Main reason I left the CG method: all the related groups on social media were turning into fundamentalism. People sending death threats to other people just for mentioning shampoo (I'm not kidding). I kept the advice that was working for me (like using a cotton tshirt instead of a towel, only brushing hair when wet, etc) and discarded the rest (like scrubbing my scalp with bicarb and vinegar... that would do for my kitchen counter, not for my skin).

Hello! I have been following the method for over a year now and my hair has never been this healthy. Have you tried using a "low" Poo? There is no need for sulfates if your cleaning routine is good enough. If your hair is fine and with low porosity, probably your scalp will need cleasing more regularly.. Look for cocamidepropyl betaine in your shampoo :) it is not a sulfate but it has great cleansing power.

LOL i have wavy hair and when i started trying to transition I only cowashed. It was pretty shocking, so I changed my routine and added a regular shampoo every four weeks. I did peruse the Curly Girl Handbook and honestly I think the excessive "rules" don't actually come from Massey, they come from other people who are trying to interpret and modify the handbook. I don't think Massey herself was actually as obsessed with rules as much as helping to guide naturally curly haired women away from chemical relaxers and constant heat styling, and maybe encouraging more women to stop color their gray hair. And it was more of a "you do you" rather than a "you have to fit this image". And I don't think any of it was meant to be "rules". And I've watched so many women approach the method as if it's a real struggle. It just shouldn't be. If it is, then don't bother and do something else.

When I went back to my tried and true conditioner, I stopped experiencing hair loss, my scalp healed, and my ringlets are back. Since the only change in my routine was that I swapped my favorite conditioner for Deva Curl, my conclusion is the negative effects I experienced were caused by the Deva Curl Conditioner. Although it is true that improperly cleansing the scalp and hair will show similar symptoms, there is definitely something going on with Deva Curl. I just think it's important not to minimize the seriousness of the claims against Deva Curl.

When it comes to any type of hair everyone is different. It’s all about trial and error, if it don’t work for you move on. I think the curly girl method has some good guidelines, but there is no reason to treat it as gospel. At the end of the day, if your hair looks great you’re on the right track!

Thanks so much this! I've only recently started wearing my hair curly again. About 5 years ago I thought the cgm was the only answer and I had curly professional hairdressers tell me I had to pump my hair full of as much moisture as I could. After a year my hair became so weak it started falling out in clumps. My husband thought it was from stress, but I'm such a chill person this didn't make sense to me. I found what you mentioned about the density of your roots getting thinner really eye opening, I think this is what happened! (I also have fine 3a curls) So this time round I'm ditching the hair masks and the leave in conditioners. Your videos are great, thanks for making them!

I've been following this method for more than a year. The first 8 to 9 months it felt great. I had my hair most moisturized than ever. I used to deep condition every wash cuz my hair used to be so dry. By the 8 or 9th month or so I started to cowash, and my hair was wonderful, or so I thought. Then my hair started to thin and fall like never in my life. I've noticed it when I had lost like 30% of my hair. There I stopped cowashing. My hair still fell like crazy, but a little less. I was noticing a bit of change in pattern an texture, flat roots...I finally tried protein treatments and sulfate shampoo once or twice and month, less deep condition and regular sulfate free shampoo. Now my hair is getting a lil better. Hope it gets back to normal. Your video was the thing I've been needing for so long, here it is. Great video, JJ! Same thing happened to me. I transitioned back in January. After a month of CGM, my 2C/3A wavy/curls were a mess. I almost pulled out my straightening iron... but instead, I bought a sulphate shampoo, new curly styling products and a Denman brush! My hair was like night and day! I found that the key to my texture is definitely scrunching “a lot” with each product I add in from the leave-in conditioner right through to the last step which is a drugstore gel. My hair has never been better! I also get highlights and color! If I get to much crunch, I just gently scrunch out with an Oil, once my hair is absolutely dry.

I watched another video of Jayme's, with styling do's and don'ts, and one of them was to not ditch shampoo, and I got all conflicted about what was 'right'. I'm learning that it's not about following someone else's routine, but its about taking bits and pieces of advice to figure out what your hair needs. And I think my hair needs a wash with some sulphates once or twice a month 😄

  • @trentkatelas4707

Omg leaving silicone was the best thing i have ever down for my hair. Using conditioner that is silicone free may leave my hair feeling dryer to start with but then after following this for awhile my hair is much healthier. With suflates i use them when i wash my hair. If i use sulfate free shampoo i get smelly hair. I gently brush my hair every morning sometimes with a leave in conditioner and find this really helps my hair. What the curly girl method should really be about is finding what works for your hair and not excluding certain ingredients.

I have been trying to use the CGM for years now. UA-cam videos for curly hair make it seem like it's the only way to get nice curls! I understand that it works for certain hair types but I finally gave up on it a few weeks ago. My hair used to go from nice curls to heavy, dull and frizzy hair and a greasy scalp and I would find it so hard to get it back to it's normal state, even when using sulfates to cleanse it. I have 3a-3b thin curls, very similar to Jayme's and this is my wake up call to stop trying to give the CGM a go. Since going back to sulfates and some silicone my hair is feeling lighter, and stronger and looking shinier. I understand that it works for some people, but it's just not for me. Thank you for making this video!

I do a simpler version of the CGM. I try to only use shampoos with sulphates at least once a month. I shampoo my hair every week to get rid of build up but it’s always nice to get my hair completely clean with a sulphate shampoo imo. My conditioners and stylers are always silicone free and paraben free. This has helped my damaged curls SO much! Honestly, I think if I followed every single rule in the CGM I would actually go crazy and just shave my head 😂

  • @AhMusic55
    @AhMusic55 4 роки тому +1

It also comes down to the hair porosity ! I have type 3b curls high porosity so my hair absorbs what I put on it really quick and my sister is more of thinner but low porosity hair , so she gets more product buildup due to her hair cuticles being so close up that she needs lighter products more H2O and indirect heat ( heat cap when deep conditioning) other wise she gets the itchy scalp because all the products just sit on her hair and scalp.. the type of oils, the placement in your hair, and how fast they penetrate into your hair is key for your hair health.. with that being said, when using silicones ( Dimethicone ect ) my hair gets weighed down, no definition, feels heavy completely the opposite happens when I use silicone free products. When it comes to scalp health I think is about consistency, the more natural thinks you’re putting in the better that does not mean putting 100 products at the same time because they claim they are natural .. our skin is a living organ that absorbs what we put on it... we would not put battery acid in our hearts and pretend it’s going to take it well. The same thing happens with our hair.. CURL FRIENDS, READ, INVESTIGATE, LEARN HOW TO READ THE INGREDIENTS and TO LISTEN TO YOUR HAIR AND BODY !! Hope you are all safe 💕

I've been following the CGM for almost 6 months and it's done wonders for my hair (2C-3A). However, I don't follow the "no brushing" rule. Actually, even though every curly youtuber I've seen says you should never brush your hair while it's dry, I brush it before washing my hair. That way it detangles easily without losing too much hair. I also brush my hair dry before going to sleep on day 3 onwards until I wash my hair again because I read somewhere that dry brushing is good for hair growth (and I can tell it's worked). We just gotta find what works for us.

Not Your Mother's Naturals (I like the pink line) and Mielle!!! I love Mielle's mint deep conditioning/protein treatment. Keeps my hair very balanced and neither products are very heavy. I also do apple cider vinegar rinses regularly to remove buildup, since I have color treated hair and sulphates strip my color.

  • @han__nya
    @han__nya 4 роки тому +1

I also went through something similar recently, basically I had buildup in my hair, which made it look greasy and dry at the same time. I don't use shampoo, or very little, and even that didn't take care of the problem. I resorted to using baking soda, and it removed all the buildup, it's crazy. I think all the styling products I used ended up making my hair look absolutely horrendous, which is the opposite of what they're supposed to do. While I don't follow the curly hair method to a letter, I do think that sulfates or silicones might help keep your hair in good shape, just used sparringly. And clarifying is sooo important.

I may avoid the products with sulfates and silicones, but I shampoo and condition my hair every other day (my hair and scalp are quite oily) and don’t put in styling products every time. I also brush my hair before washing, and comb or use a Denman brush when styling. I don’t always diffuse, and I sleep on a satin pillowcase. And that is what works best for me. 👩🏻‍🦱

The shea moisture coconut and hibiscus mousse has always worked really well for me since it adds hold and volume. Also this product is for moisture more than for hold, but the Cantu curl activator cream is my favorite leave in conditioner. It's like six dollars and adds shine and moisture. I usually don't diffuse my hair, so to make it dry a bit faster and not be so weighed down at the roots I like to plop my hair with a T-shirt (there are videos on UA-cam that show how to do this). Since your hair is transitioning you should try finger coiling a few curls for definition. Hopefully this helps you!
Btw, my hair type is 2c 3a, fine, and medium to low density.

you have to do it a but longer than just once, there are many many aspects to the method.. i have wavy hair as well and i dont cowash for example- but i do use non sulfate shampoo. only use sulfates when i mistakenly use a product with silicones or oil mask. i dont know what you did, but i do know that you have to try it more than just once to see if it works or not :)

Girls, its all about the porosity of your hair. Ive got wavy high-porosity hair, too. Cant say I followed all the curly girl method's instructions, however Ive been using organic pure oils on my hair regularly 2-3 times a week, avoiding silicones in all my products (hair and skin) for well over 6 years now. I also tried the co-wash thing for a while, only liked it shortly. My hair is pretty dull, often times it feels really rough and gliding a single hair between my thumb and pointing finger feels so unsmooth (must be opened-up cuticles). Ive also got a very bad hair-breakage problems and nothing helps.
Ive been thinking lately.. back in the day we didnt use to look up all the ingredients on our hair products, we used our regular shampoos and some people even used conditioners! Ive never had worse hair in my life :|
Just today I read about hair porosity and silicones. Silicones are said to be very good for high porosity hair. Looking back, Ive got to agree.

I basically follow what you do: sulfates on occasion throughout my wash days and really no silicones or limited at least. I have fine hair and I find silicones do weigh it down. My scalp is completely unhealthy and itchy if I don’t wash it properly every three days or so. Right there with ya!

I have had the book for years and have lent it to friends with wavy hair and it changed their lives for the better, giving them definition. However I have fine 3B-C hair and using the cleansing protocol reduces my hair’s volume and definition. On the positive side, it can make it more manageable, less frizz and more long and flowy because it stretches out my curls into beachy elongated ringlets.
I haven’t found any curl method yet that consistently works for me. It seems like my good hair days are just random and unrepeatable. It’s easier to just blow dry it straight.

Before I found this once a month routine my hair was very high porosity, easily got split ends, and bad breakage at the roots. I lost a lot of hair density. The worst was a large bald spot with little wispy hairs. Right behind my hairline. My scalp was clearly visible.
Clarify hair (Ion Hard Water Shampoo $13 at Sally's), Olapex #3 ($30 Sephora. I let my hair marinate all night then light gentle shampoo out), Aphogee Two-Step Treatment the only silicone product i use (large bottle lasts a long time $25 at Sally's follow directions), Intense Moisturizing deep conditioner ($13 at Sallys walmart or target shea moisture manuka honey)
Ion Hard Water Shampoo- It's sulfate free. Strips hair of everything even hard water and mineral build up without excessive drying out the hair. No brittle feeling. Allowing for a clean product free hair to receive the protein better. This shampoo helps hair with volume and shine.
Olaplex #3 Hair Treatment- Strengthens hair from the inside. Restoring broke bonds inside hair caused by heat damage, dying hair and just normal wear and tear. you'll also have a tighter curl.
Aphogee Two-Step Treatment- Put product in a spray bottle. (Product is watery) will work on all hair types. But Great for high porosity, heat damaged and/or dyed hair. Strengthens and protects hair from the outside. Reinforcing it with Protein. Think of a pot hole filled street (High porosity - normal porosity). Aphogee 2 step protein treatment fills in the pot holes causing hair to be stronger, smoother, shiner, less tangle prone (so less split ends), tightens curls, less breakage over all, and literally holds moisture for days. No holes no moisture loss.
Deep condition- Do deep condition with heat last. Because protein fills in the pot holes. Clarifying allows the protein to stick and hold better to the hair. The moisture will not escape as easily, so deep condition last. If you don't deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner (NOT A PROTEIN based conditioner you don't need more protein you need moisture right now) your hair will be dry and brittle then it can snap off.
Hair should feel stronger inside and out, look thicker, shiner, less tangled and have a tighter curl. I do this once a month. I have 3b, medium density, normal porosity, fine strands.

The way you discriped the density of your hair changed! I have the same and even my hairdresser told me my hair was really thin:(. I have or had very thick hair but at the hairline/contour i have bold spots😭 Thought it was due to hormones from the pill, i stopped 2 months now but i do not see any improvement. I follow cg method but i do a sulfate cleanse once in a few weeks to keep my scalp clean and healthy but feel that its not enough thow.
I did some research and choose to do a chelating wash (Lisap chalate shampoo) to get all the gunk and mineral buildup out of my hair, the result is mindblowing! My hair feels soft but clean and so light! So to me that is a sign that using only cg approved products don’t cut it to clean all those stylingpriducts out of your scalp and hair. Could you recommend a nice shampoo and conditioner that does not strip to much? I keep on using the curly girl styling products and i do brush my hair always, also a denman brush🤘🏼but will go for a normal shampoo after hearing this. I can relate to everything you said! My hair was damaged due to painting my hair and blow outs all the time and now i don’t do both anymore so that has made a huge difference in getting healthy hair , not so much to do with not using sulfates anymore🤷🏻‍♀️
Thank you for this and i lovveee everything about your hair! So pretty 😍🤩

I had low porosity before I dyed my hair and it was a nightmare. Try using a shampoo with sulfates, a moisturizing conditioner (and maybe a hair mask), a light leave in with protein and ZERO coconut oil. It was super drying for my hair.

I'm really relieved to hear that we can do it without the curly girl method. It's really hard to find "clean" products here. The ones I can find are not exactly for curly hair and making my scalp itchy as you described. I'm gonna go to buy some curly hair products with inner peace now lol
