I love love love Tennessee. I'm a Chicago gal born and raised. My grandfather lived in Chattanooga so my family and I would visit twice a year and drop by Gatlinburg. We went to memphis, Graceland and Knoxville, you name it. Now my husband and I didnt have too much money for our honeymoon. He mentioned how he had never been to Tennessee so we went to Chattanooga for our honeymoon and drove down, we hit Nashville GRIDLOCK. Like I've never seen that bad. We moved like an inch every couple of minutes. It took over an hour to get out. But I would still love to retire one day down in Tennessee, beautiful weather and the loveliest people you could ever meet!
Lifelong Tennessean from Chattanooga. One thing I’ll add if you’re in the state in the Spring (or late fall), pay attention to tornado watches/warnings. Weather can get wild here!
This Canadian old timer has spent a lot of time in Tennessee. Driving Semi and being a motorcycle enthusiast has brought me to so many awesome places in the state but best of all are the people I have met and become friends with. And now, my oldest grandson is engaged to a wonderful young lady from Murfreesboro. The wedding will be there and they are going to live here. At 73, life seems to be getting better and better.
Was raised in Tennessee, and yes, driving across the state is a long commitment! Although I-40 is the fastest route from end to end, if you have the time, take Highway 64 across the southern part of the state. It is one of the prettiest drives through old farm country that takes you through every quaint county seat along the southern border. You won't make any time, but you will be so captivated by the beautiful scenery you won't care about time. 🙂
We moved to Tennessee this year. Love it so much. We even got a Dolly Parton license plate :) We also bought Univ of TN Vol t-shirts so we can fit in on game days - don't know a thing about college football, but you are right - they are crazy about that team here!

Great video Mark! East TN is my home, born and raised and still here. There are 3 don'ts of TN. You got one...Don't dis Dolly and Don't dis Peyton Manning and Don't dis Pat Summit especially here in the east. So warm and loving here and wave at those you drive past. Pigeon Forge area is crowded all the time now. It used to be a ghost town Jan-Feb, but that's busy now too. Very touristy, but good for Sevier Co. Don't forget the Tri-Cities past Pigeon Forge. 1. Don't skip Chattanooga. It's very underrated 2. Be VERY careful in Memphis, Memphis is not a city that you can just walk around, it's very easy to end up in a dangerous area 3. Don't panic if you see someone carrying firearms, that is perfectly legal in Tennessee
Please let a 50-year-old Tennessean who is also the daughter, goddaughter, niece and cousin to police officers second this. Memphis is frequently ranked as the most dangerous city in America. A lot of Southerners call it the Detroit of the South. It's impoverished and crime is extraordinarily high. Even if you were there in daylight and in a crowd, please keep an eye out. Nobody should have to suffer a crime when they're just here to enjoy a city. And tragically downtown Nashville has become very similar to Memphis as far as crime goes, not because it is impoverished, but because we have a lot of foreign tourists who simply can't stick around press charges. Again, no matter what time of the day you are there, please keep a good eye out. No matter how much I,as a native Nashvillian, complain about tourists, I don't want anyone to get hurt just trying to enjoy the city.
Let's be honest. Don't be an easy target in Memphis. I lived here my whole life and never had an issue. But I'm a memphian. If you ain't from here please don't think you can do whatever you want cause you can't. Someone will take all your excitement and maybe more if you do.
Fantastic video. Lifelong Knoxvillian here. Being safe at the natural water areas is such an important tip. People seem to get hurt or drown at the Townsend Wye every summer so please be careful everyone! And also, so true about our left lane drivers and snow! Be patient with us and we’ll repay you with kindness ten-fold. ❤
I so enjoyed this video about my beloved Tennessee. As a middle Tennessean, I am painfully aware that Nashville has become the hub of the universe. It was once a sweet, fun, small city to maneuver around and in. Not so much, anymore. So sad to watch Nashville become the next Atlanta. Breaks our hearts that its character and flavor is fading due to growth and over population. You are absolutely right...the infrastructure cannot keep up with the rate of folks moving here. Sure wish there were a way to slow it down; Nashville is being loved to death.
I'm a lifelong Nashvillian and I think I'd actually take Atlanta over Nashville currently. At least in Atlanta you don't witness drunk British tourists pissing in planters because they don't realize that bathrooms are free in the US, or run the risk of having your car damaged when a drunken member from a bridal shower falls off one of the party buses and lands on your roof. Both of which are actually things you see in Nashville nowadays.
Yeah I just drove through about a month ago going to Lorettas,I couldn't believe all the new high rise buildings!I hadn't been in atleast 5 Years and it is booming!
I'm sorry to hear but hey, look on the brightside. It just shows that Tennessee and other reds states are doing something right if the state is experiencing so much prosperity
@@johnspinelli9396 That’s how my family looks at it but if Davidson County wants to keep having woke leftists in office they WILL ruin Nashville. I have lived in East Tennessee my entire life. I am so glad you brought up the driving. I have literally driven across the country and back. I know plenty of people that have not been too far out of this area. It is always hard to explain how different people drive in this area. It kills me anytime I have to get on the interstate and go to Knoxville.
I was just in Tennessee a few days ago. I was mainly in Eastside if the state. But I definitely agree that Pigeon Forge is very busy in the summer. But it also a great year round destination, along with many Smokey mountains activities. Also don’t skip Dollywood as great place to go to and there something for everyone there.
If you're someone that wants the mountains but doesn't like the crowds, consider Townsend, Tennessee. It's big enough to have the sort of things tourists seem like, such as cabins, walking and biking trails, and nice little restaurants. But it's nowhere near as big and as flashy. Just know it's more suited to the couple than to the family, since there's far more things for a family to do in the Gatlinburg area then there are in Townsend.

@@christianbrooks9508 Those are both great! Then again Clarksville doesn't really have any truly bad areas. Even the "bad" areas tend to be poo pretty decent.
I visited Gatlinburg in late July and Moutan City some days later in early August from my vacation base in Ferguson, North Carolina. If you ever come to those tracts on a third Saturday between April and October (between 1 and 5 pm), you should definitely visit Whippoorwill Academy and Village. The place is interesting and the people running it are amazing. And talk about accent 😗, I love it. Even if I live in Denmark, Europe, I have visited the place numerous times in the last 20 years including three times this year: mid April, early August and late September. Just a suggestion for a future trip.
Lifelong Tennessean here. I love all your videos. The accuracy of this video tells me I can trust your opinions and advice for other places around the world. Keep up the good work!!
Watch for motorcycles. Tennessee has some of the most famous roads in America for beautiful motorcycle rides, so there are lots of motorcyclists here (and most are very friendly). Just remember that 2 wheel riding is different from cars, and give extra room, especially on curvy sections and scraped asphalt.
Spoken like a person who's ridden the devil's backbone. My husband is South African and one of his brothers would sell his left foot for a chance to come and check out that highway on his bike. (Fortunately, his wife would probably hide the bike as well as his left foot should he ever try it. I don't think she wants to be a widow.)
Thanks so much. My wife and I have utilized your advice (which is solid) many times. Your content and hard work is appreciated. We also use your wifes awesome pimento cheese recipe as well (delicious). Love to you and yours.

I'm a pretty-much life long resident of Pennsylvania, and the 2 states that we enjoy the most that are south of us are: West Virginia and Tennessee!! I'm all @ that mountainous region in the eastern part of the state! It is BREATHTAKING!! Much Love & Respect --- Directly from the rolling hills and fertile farmlands of Pennsylvania!! :) Domari Nolo PA III
I live in a part of Tennessee that only does whole hog BBQ. The triangle of Jackson/Lexington/Henderson is famous for whole hog. They split the hogs down the belly, lay it flat, and cook it all night. One place, near me, did twenty two entire hogs over the 4th of July weekend.
The other thing about being around Knoxville: Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Supposedly the largest concentration of PhDs in the USA Monday through Friday.
A few more tips as someone currently living in TN. 1) We get bad weather in the winter sometimes but in most parts of the state we can’t clean the snow or ice off the roads. Don’t get caught driving in it if you are uncomfortable AT ALL driving on an unplowed road. 2) Spring and fall are not nice, gradual warming or cooling seasons. The jet stream constantly plays double Dutch over the state, meaning the temperatures whipsaw back and forth VERY erratically, so check the forecast right before leaving as you may need to prepare for multiple seasons for a one-week period. 😂 3) Summers. Hot and humid. But if you think that’s bad in Nashville just wait till you hit Memphis. Memphis is literally not even in the same climate/plant hardiness zone as the rest of the state. 4) Memphis: Yes, we all know Memphis has crime, poverty, awful drivers, etc. But only Memphians are allowed to dump on Memphis. Don’t even do it if you’re from Nashville. 5) If you’re seeing Tennesseans drive like NASCAR drivers, though, odds are they are indeed from Memphis. 😂 And remember that unlike the other cities in the state, Memphians will not hesitate to pass you on the right. If you live in the area it’s normal and you don’t even blink but if you’re not expecting it you could have a wreck. (I have to really watch this habit when not in the Memphis area.) 6) There IS something way worse than Tennessee drivers while in Tennessee. And that is TEXAS DRIVERS. 😂 If I have someone riding my butt in a giant pickup or SUV in Tennessee while I’m already well over the speed limit, odds are it’s a Texan. (If it’s a total beater of a vehicle or it’s a Mustang, Impala, or Charger, it’s probably a Memphian. 😂) 7) THE RENDEZVOUS IS A TOURIST TRAP. Any local will tell you that. Better to go to Central Barbecue or the Germantown or Collierville Commissary.
George Dickel > Jack Daniels for Tn Sour Mash......JD is for out of state people, tourists etc feels more mass produced, GD is our hidden handcrafted gem.
I lived in East Tennessee most of my childhood and teen years. Yes, college football is life. Made me laugh when he said don’t confuse them with construction workers. And yes Tennessee is a big state. That’s why we didn’t go to middle or west Tennessee very much. That is to long of a drive.
TN is really beautiful. I saw a big rig getting pulled out of the sand on the exact same runoff you drove past on the down hill highway scene. And next thing you should do is GoDawgs! And come visit the North Georgia Mountains!
I’ve lived in Knoxville, TN for 9 wonderful years! I love life here. Beautiful state, kind people. Your video was right on point in nearly every way. What I can’t relate to were your first comments re don’t confuse Vol fans with-construction workers? Because they might band together and sing Rocky Top? I didn’t know construction workers are prone to gathering for a Rocky Top rendition. Maybe elsewhere, but not particularly in Tennessee.
one addition id like to make.... dont just go to the bigger cities, some of the rural towns have some of the best food and music and we have numerous smaller parks and lakes that are often overlooked. i live in a small town (jamestown) that is 40 miles from the nearest town and we have an annual chicken festival that has some of eh best food youll find. in the summer we have events almost every weekend, music, truck pulls, mule pulls, you name it we will have it.
@@woltersworld Tennessee actually has a state law that requires slower traffic to stay in the left lane. So that's why you always have people on the left lane going 55 mph and a 65 mi zone. Add to that the fact that roads, highways, and interstates in Tennessee can change speeds without any warning, leading a lot of people to stay in the left lane because they have no earthly idea what the speed limit is, and that probably explains why you see people in the left lane going at a snail's pace. Except for trucks. Especially dump trucks. They might only be able to physically get to 45 mph, and they might be on a section of road that specifically says trucks have to stay in the left hand lane, but I guarantee you they're going to be in the right lines. Especially if crap's coming off their load.
She sure is....just love Dolly. She has been my favourite for ages, and she follows me on twitter. Just love her music. 9 to 5, Jolen and I will always love you are my top favourites.
You should have mentioned about the tail of the dragon aka US129. It’s a really freakin fun road. Buts it’s also extremely dangerous and you need to be careful when driving on it. It’s a popular road to tear up so I figure I’d mention !
We used to go through Ashville a couple times a year back in the day. I don't know why I never made a video since we really were there so often. Great beer and hiking
I'd also like to see you do an Asheville video. I understand that it's been viewed lately as a nice alternative to overcrowded Nashville. But I also understand that some of the locals are starting to rebel against the tourists. I'm curious as to which is more accurate assessment.
@@micheledeetlefs6041 my parents moved here in the early 90’s I moved away but came back about 10 years ago, in my experience most people here who have an issue with visitors, have moved here after me the second time. People I knew when I was a kid like to show the town off. Nashville is an awesome town as well.
I've lived in East Tennessee all my life. I approve this video. LMAO Ya'll come back and see us... but remember . . . if you hit the dirt road, you've gone too far. GO VOLS !
Overall this is well done, but you really missed on ignoring that “last hour” of the drive across the state from Memphis. Upper East TN (past Pigeon Forge) has NASCAR (it’s Bristol baby), the Birthplace of Country Music museum (Bristol), and the oldest town in TN (Jonesborough). It was sheer neglect to mention that last hour’s drive to reach the TN/VA border. Hope you can rectify that on a future video. Otherwise, I think you covered the state very well.
@@woltersworld Weve also got the Rhythm and Roots Music Festival every September on State Street in downtown Bristol that brings in about 50k with country, folk, bluegrass and a little of all types of music. Most people seem to think the state ends at Knoxville. (Nothing against the vid or the info, its just a sore spot around here haha)
Tennessee doesn’t stop at pigeon Forge. Why doesn’t anyone talk about the 100 miles of Tennessee east of Knoxville?? Bristol,Johnson city , Jonesborough the oldest town in Tennessee. Greeneville the birthplace of Andrew Johnson etc.
I've lived here for over 40 yrs. There's so many small towns and parks that he never mentions that are not crowded. The Appalachian Trail is in the Northeast Tennessee east of Knoxville and beautiful farmland in Northwest Tennessee plus a lake that was formed when the Mississippi River flowed backwards during an earthquake. In my little corner of Northeast Tennessee I have never been able to make it to all the festivals. It's a great state with so much to do. Come and visit and if you decide to stay there is no state income tax.
I was about to say the same thing as dxwwf3! I love the last one bc most of the locals around her.... Including me!!! Haha... are very friendly!! One reason I would never move from TN!!!! I love my state and I love to share my state with everyone else!!! 🥰
As a Murfreesboro native this video was really fun and very accurate. Great video! But you were incorrect about Tennesseeans driving in the snow: None of us know how to drive in the snow
Nashville has gotten so many transplants from Washington State and New York lately that we've actually found people living in the city who know how to drive on snow. Tragically none of them have been hired by the DMV to run the snow plows or the trucks that salt the roads as yet. So we still see the snow plows overturning every time there's 2 inches of snow!
100% correct on Nashville traffic!! Nashville and Memphis are totally different, but equally great. As far as Memphis, be really careful where you go, because it is one of the most dangerous, violent cities in the US. Use common sense as you normally would
I disagree about the driving. When I’m down in Tennessee everyone drives like an old lady but holy cow the hospitality is so understated. Nicest people in the world and I’m Canadian lol.
Definitely Recognize Amazing And Beautiful Videos of Chattanooga and the Beautiful Famous Blue Bridge ( right at South Pittsburg, TN - The Home of Lodge Cast Iron) - at that point - As a Traveler- Little known fact- You are less than 6 minutes from the Marker ( of where Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama ALL JOIN AT THE SAME POINT) - As He stated at the beginning of the video, AT Nickajack !
I’ve never heard of the term sticker shock before! To be honest, I love Tennessee. It’s a beautiful state. I need to experience Nashville and Memphis next b
The biggest DON"T about visiting TN is . DON'T VISIT MEMPHIS! You may get shot, you may get robbed, your car may get stolen and you will be treated like crap at most places you expect customer service. I know, I live here.
How do you mean? Like long tour groups or you are staying a long time in Europe? DM me on our Facebook or Instagram channel and I can help more. Comments get lost in youtube
He was actually just giving you the distance between a couple of major cities. Tennessee is a parallelogram. And while Memphis is the most southwestern city, the most northeastern town is actually Mountain City. The distance between the most western and eastern point is actually closer to eight and a half hours than seven.
@@UTTuba I am aware of that. Believe I've mentioned it in previous videos. It's one of the hilarious things about Tennessee. I love telling little details like this to my South African in-laws. They also find it hysterical that I live in an area framed by Jim Beam, George Dickel, and Jack Daniels. And that's actually how I have to tell people in South Africa where I'm from. Country music really isn't that big, and Elvis was big during apartheid when a lot of American things were banned. So if I say I'm from the state where Elvis lived, or I live in the state where Dolly Parton lives, they just look at me blankly. You name George Dickel, or more significantly, Jack Daniels, and oh my do they know where you're from! Just don't bother trying to explain to them that it's not technically bourbon because there's extra steps in it. That just makes their eyes glaze over.

Chattanooga is terrible don’t go there at all please

Hello Hey Hi and Howdy , Thank ya Sir, For Recognizing Our Tennessee Pride ., Our Blood Runs Orange In The VOLUNTEER STATE Very. Proud of Our Vols . Awesome Video.. Cleveland Tenn Waivin a Hand ✋️
.
Thank you!
Lived here my whole life but haven't been to Cleveland yet.
Thank you for showing God’s country in a good light exactly the way it is here. You even had our drivers down to a T especially in the winter time. 😂
I very recentlyoved from middle TN to Ohio and I miss TN SO MUCH! Iam from Ohio, but lived in middle TN for 35 years and I call TN home. It is a GREAT state with some of the best people ever! ❤
I am impressed with the idea of dry alcohol in Tennessee still today. Huge respect.
I've lived in Clarksville, TN for over 20 years and I think this video is perfect.
Thank you. That is really nice of you
I lived there when I was a child. In Sango. Where are you? Clarksville's a beautiful city.
@@bestyoutubechannelever3206 Sango and Wilma Rudolph area
@@christianbrooks9508 Those are both great! Then again Clarksville doesn't really have any truly bad areas. Even the "bad" areas tend to be poo pretty decent.
Hey, I live in Clarksville, too! ☺
You were really able to get some great shots and clips of our beautiful state.
Nickajack is in my opinion one of the most beautiful places in the entire state. Definitely a must visit for anyone passing through the area.
Excellent video I will traveling through the state and wow perfect video. Thinking of staying in Memphis along our roadtrip.
Thank you for so much information
Not sure which was more hot, the Nashville hot chicken for lunch, or the next morning if you catch my drift
Born and raised in East Tennessee. We love our Dolly, our Vols and our Peyton Manning! Would love to see a video about East Tennessee, from Gatlinburg on up through Bristol!
you know professor, i've said it before, but it's fascinating how you go 'walkabout' like real life aint all that serious. It certainly is how i'd like to live my life. I am truly envious! And ofc, ty for the videos, like always.
Love 💗 this! It’s such a comprehensive guide and so fun! Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley ( long live the king 👑)!! Rock on 🤘 people! And the history and museum, flavors and food 🍲, nature! Yesss! Thank you Mark and team. - Amy
Thanks Amy!
Domari Nolo
PA III
Question are you from the Appalachian part of Pennsylvania?
Driving from Memphis to Knoxville is actually a longer distance than driving from Nashville to Canada btw.
Excellent tips. I have taken notes. ✍🏽
Cheers!
Shhhh! Don't tell Huntsville Alabama that. Feuds have started over less.
Go Vols
A few more tips as someone currently living in TN.
1) We get bad weather in the winter sometimes but in most parts of the state we can’t clean the snow or ice off the roads. Don’t get caught driving in it if you are uncomfortable AT ALL driving on an unplowed road.
2) Spring and fall are not nice, gradual warming or cooling seasons. The jet stream constantly plays double Dutch over the state, meaning the temperatures whipsaw back and forth VERY erratically, so check the forecast right before leaving as you may need to prepare for multiple seasons for a one-week period. 😂
3) Summers.
(I have to really watch this habit when not in the Memphis area.)
6) There IS something way worse than Tennessee drivers while in Tennessee. 😂)
7) THE RENDEZVOUS IS A TOURIST TRAP. Any local will tell you that. Better to go to Central Barbecue or the Germantown or Collierville Commissary.
Tennessee is a great state
It's fun for sure
We're the best!
George Dickel > Jack Daniels for Tn Sour Mash......JD is for out of state people, tourists etc feels more mass produced, GD is our hidden handcrafted gem.
I Agree !
Mark, I wish you had given a heads up. Lynchburg is my hometown. We now live in Cookeville but I still have a home in Lynchburg. Thanks for the story.
Awesome video
Thanks
Love your channel! Thank you
That's very nice of you. Thank you.
I lived in East Tennessee most of my childhood and teen years. Yes, college football is life. Made me laugh when he said don’t confuse them with construction workers. And yes Tennessee is a big state. That’s why we didn’t go to middle or west Tennessee very much. That is to long of a drive.
Seriously long drives
Aussie here, I'd prefer to see things outside the cities and that sounds like fun.
Here we call it the "Three States of Tennessee". I am a lifelong resident.
Its both flattering and saddening to see all the transplants in TN over the last few years.
As a Massachusetts driver, I'm well acquainted with the way Tennessee guys drive. Won't be a problem. Lol
I grew up in Jasper, near Nickajack ❤
Great video. I’m a Knoxville native.
Dolly's family still lives in Sevier County...
As a lifelong Tennessean, I can confirm the speed limit only applies to the right lane. There is no left lane speed limit.
So true. On the upper and lower limit as well in that left lane 😞
I want to go there on vacation GA here!!!
Crosstown brewery is sooo 🔥
Nashville traffic was bad way before the growth kicked up around 2015.
You should come to Asheville in NC. You’d be great at making a video about here.
I'm in Tennessee but I love Asheville.
@@johnreed8844 Thanks. I had wondered about it.
Thank you for adding this so people can know this too. I appreciate comments like this that help give people more tips. Thank you!
Nice shirt man
Tennessee doesn’t stop at pigeon Forge. Why doesn’t anyone talk about the 100 miles of Tennessee east of Knoxville?? Bristol,Johnson city , Jonesborough the oldest town in Tennessee. Greeneville the birthplace of Andrew Johnson etc.
Great, good to know
I've lived here for over 40 yrs.
So true. Too much to mention in a 13 minute segment.
Yes Realfoot lake.
I enjoy the video
I was about to say the same thing as dxwwf3! I love the last one bc most of the locals around her.... Including me!!! Haha... are very friendly!! One reason I would never move from TN!!!! I love my state and I love to share my state with everyone else!!! 🥰
Memphis was cool when I went
As a Murfreesboro native this video was really fun and very accurate. Great video! But you were incorrect about Tennesseeans driving in the snow: None of us know how to drive in the snow
dude i got hacked lool
Nashville has gotten so many transplants from Washington State and New York lately that we've actually found people living in the city who know how to drive on snow. Tragically none of them have been hired by the DMV to run the snow plows or the trucks that salt the roads as yet. So we still see the snow plows overturning every time there's 2 inches of snow!
Ain't that the truth, 😂.
Driving tip in Tennessee: If someone on the interstate or State Highway is in the right lane slowing down traffic, it is really an invitation to race!
You're right about the VOLS, but we ain't got NOTHING on 'Bama when it comes to "Football crazy" lol.
I need to drive woth you then :)
1. Don't lose to UGA
Middle TN is NOT flat. That's West TN.
See Rick City 😊
Come back to Memphis Wolter
Tn native. I agree with the driving. We do think we are NASCAR drivers. GO PLEASE.
Central bbq ftw!

Don't think I'll ever visit Tennessee but was still an informative video (:
No worries. You are at least informed my friend. Hope you are well
Come. You'll love it here!
I didn't realize it'd take 7 hours to get from one side to another and that it spans 2 time zones😳 good to know!
The time zone thing gets me every time
He was actually just giving you the distance between a couple of major cities. Tennessee is a parallelogram. And while Memphis is the most southwestern city, the most northeastern town is actually Mountain City. The distance between the most western and eastern point is actually closer to eight and a half hours than seven.
@@micheledeetlefs6041 We can get to Canada from NE TN in the same time it takes to get to Memphis.
