    Howard is awesome! Taylor from Colorado here! His information is good, straightforward, and to the point! He truly inspired me to get orchids. In my case, miniature orchids! I already have an Orchidarium setup and it works quite well! If you plan on getting into orchids, Howard is a good resource! I would love to go see his orchid, greenhouse someday! It looks immaculate!

    Thank you Howard. I’m just fascinated by your greenhouse and orchid setups. I live in SW Florida and grow my orchids outdoors year round in a screened garden room. I’ve learned so much from you about growing bare root orchids. I was unfamiliar with virgin cork. The moss is a wonderful addition. Mosses are so beautiful. I’m inspired to try this. I have used driftwood and fern bark, but I believe this will be a much better option. I look forward to your future posts. I’ve watched this one multiple times. Please do share as much as you like.

We’ve actually had record lows this winter and a few of my orchids and Hoya are showing some slight issues from the cold, low 40s F I put my hurricane shutters down but will be getting a heater for the future. All in all though, our winters are generally mild. Many of my orchids are blooming or in spike thanks to the cold snaps. Thank you for the recommendation.

    there are also several miniature versions of dendobriums. They look really cool. I saw them near around traditional plant market here in west indonesia (humidity is high enough so people just put them near the road or pratically anywhere). Most of beautiful/advanced hybrids are from thailand, however. Kinda cheap.

      Thanks Helen. As far as I can tell, so far, there are lots of alternatives to cork oak. A friend of mine has used willow bark, I've also used chunky pieces of durable looking bark from the woodpile without being sure what they were. I don't know if there is something about gorse that makes it special but results so far have been encouraging with miniature species with fine roots. I think it's well worth experimenting with all sorts of substrates to see what works.

I'd love to see how you repot your orchids sometime, like how you have your phalaenopsis corningiana in a cork tube, how did you initially fix it to the tube? Good beautiful morning to you Howard. It’s raining here in london.
    I was hoping some advice. I’ve recently cracked the phalaenopsis orchid (the hard way). I was wondering if you had any recommendations of similar care that I can branch out to. My humidity averages 60-65% in a bedroom full of tropical plants. I’m lucky to have a north and a south facing windows. And I’m most familiar with aroids.
    I find your videos so relaxing and most importantly informative. It was inevitable that I’d become addicted.

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  Рік тому

      I assume you are asking what other orchids to consider? My recommendation, for the time being, would be to stick with Phalaenopsis but start exploring the huge range of beautiful species and hybrids some of which have very attractive foliage whilst others have a wonderful scent. Phalaenopsis are extremely well suited to growing indoors. The other even more exotic orchid you might consider would be a Vanda. I know there are lots of people who grow them very successfully indoors. I don't have any personal experience of growing indoors but there are lots of other orchid UA-camrs who do.

    Thank you so much for this very informative video Howard! I’ve just received my very first Pleurothallis dressleri and I too am both completely enchanted by it and terrified I’ll kill it! I have a tank which stays up at 90-100% humidity, temps of approx 66F/74F evening) to 80F/85F (daytime) with a small fan for air circulation. I tend to put new acquisitions in this tank so they can recover from being shipped and eventually move them over to a larger plant cabinet/greenhouse situation. I’ve only had the plant about a week and it seems okay so far. My question is this…I know that this particular orchid enjoys being pretty moist but do you think having standing water on the leaves will harm it at all? It’s often a bit hit or miss with even plants which are supposed to enjoy lots of moisture and humidity as to whether they enjoy water on foliage or if it will melt them/turn them yellow. Thank you again so very much for sharing your knowledge and stunning collection with us! I very much appreciate any tips or opinions on my query regarding this plant should you have the time. Cheers😌🌱

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  9 місяців тому +1

      Whether or not it is the best treatment I'm not sure but the leaves on mine are usually dry by evening. Although if the moss looks a bit too dry I might give them a light misting in the evening as well. This usually applies in warm summer waether of winter when the heating is on. But, as you say it's a nerve wracking business. Best of luck. Let me know how you get on. I'm sure I could do better with mine than I do. Mine grow quite well but the foliage tends to be a bit pale. Whether this is too much light or they need more feeding I'm just not sure.

      Oh I forgot to say you'll need a small quantity of sphagnum moss which is often useful to help retain some moisture and give the plants time to get established on a mount. It is not economic to buy from the US if you live in the UK. If there is an Orchid Society near where you live it would be well worth joining so as to meet other enthusiasts and find out where they get plants from. Also Orchid Shows are a one of the best ways to buy if you can get to one. Also worth watching unboxing orchid videos from the North America. Hope that helps.

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  6 місяців тому

      Good question. From memory it only develops on cork bark and some mounts get it a lot whilst others not at all. I think a lack of air movement and the resulting continual wetness encourages it. I don't think it does any harm to the plants but it looks unsightly so I scrape it away where possible and even use a small tootbrush to clean the surface of the cork where there aren't any roots. I'm also tending to try and re-mount plants more frequently. A fresh mount with nice clean cork and a small amount of some healthy moss often seems to give them a real boost. (This doesn't ofcourse work plants with bigger roots that really lock on to their mount). Hope that helps.

      No, sorry, I don't sell orchids. I bought my Pluerothallis dressleri from Spicesotic Plants here in the UK but it is very rarely available.
