I want to imagine it's like those cyrptobro discords where everyone starts shouting about them spreading "FUD" and saying "Looks like somebody's not trying to get rich!"
Originally it absolutely was going to be a tunnel, massive and unstoppable lined with engravings and gold. However, one smart dwarf suggested if they made it above ground, all other races would be forced to use it, and in turn pay honour to the dwarves. "Imagine! 200 years in the future, the Northern Bridge standing strong and undaunted. An elven carriage, utterly helpless in the face of the river, bowing to our honour as they pay respects to our Mighty Hold, allowing them to pass. Multiply that for every carriage, by every settlement this side of the river and across! Our Name would be passed down in history forever as the great unifier of the two banks!"
I really love that both humans and elves came with elephants and krugg "dressed" them in different styles, to reflect different people/cultures. Fantastic, as always!
As a HUGE dragon nerd, I personally find the current iteration of Kobolds in DND as stubby dwarf-like dragon descendants to be the cutest things ever, but I also love that there are so many different creatures throughout fantasy and folklore that go by the name Kobold.
Love the little touches on the creatures in this series, like how colorful the crabs are and how the elephants have folds like Indian rhinos. Little things like that really make the world. Edit: Also probably should’ve waited to make this comment before the reveal that the elephant have 4 tusks like gomphotheres which makes them even better!
Nothing like waking up and starting your day off with a ton of snow outside, no work, and a Kruggsmash video waiting for you! I think this is gonna be a good day.
I love your creativity when it comes to monster designs (Kobold, Goblins, Ogres etc) it's always fun when one shows up for the first time in a fortress, never know what your gonna get
Cutebolds are a long standing things in Dwarf Fortress. There was a whole mod about building Kobold Fortresses (if you can even call a hobble in the ground a "fort"). People have an old idea of them being cute because the original drawing memes that spread were very similar to the Mimigas in Cave Story, which are cute bunny people.
One bridge to rule them all, One bridge to find them, One bridge to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Armok where the FUN lie.
For your Kobold discussion, I actually really love the aesthetic you went with them for this fort. I love the wall-eyed bulldog-esque look, gives them a funny and distinct look but still something you wouldn't want to run into in a dark night as it comes screaming at you with a knife while demanding your purse. I would adopt like 4.
Design-wise I wish she had two long arms, but just the one has the right amount of weird that ancient gods should have. I can imagine a story cropping up that she kept wearing more and more bangles to show off her wealth, and her arm kept growing to accommodate them. Eventually the arm kept growing out of control, even as she stopped adding bangles, showing that, while wealth can be a blessing, it can also be a curse. Don't dig too deep, dwarves, even if you think riches await in the depths.
loved the rant about kobolds. fun fact, their origin is they were basically evil cave fairies, so would be blamed for things like cave-ins, poison gas eruptions, weird noises in the dark and such like, cobalt is derived from their name, or the other way i forget. I know at some point in dnd they were blue dog people. Loved your interpretation, of the goblins too. I love how every new world you make you change up the dress and design of each major group as well.
I loved the humans and elves in this. Just absolutely not what I'd have expected. The picture of the elves in the forest was strangely ominous. My favorite in this episode, I think.
I love forts like this that revolve around a large build. It brings so much character and purpose. Also with the new graphics it just looks so cool. Its the perfect amount of detail to make it easier to see and still leaves plenty of room for your imagination to fill in things. Good times.
I love that, despite the more clear graphics of the steam version, you put a pug spin on kobolds and a rat spin on goblins, very cool! I also really like that you used extinct four-tusked elephants rather than extant two-tusked species.
I personally don't mind at all how you draw the different creatures and races, in fact I look forward to see how they differ in each series/world you make
Again amazed by the variety of depictions you have for different creatures in different series! Love the design for goblins in Northbridge! PS: I wrote this before the behind-the-scenes, and I love that you have such a cool idea working progress for trying different styles for your series, I ADORE the diversity, in style, culture, and history you put in every series. It's truly inspirational, and makes all the forts seem much more grounded and realistic. You sir have an amazing imagination, and an impeccable knowledge and skill to bring into life all these unique yet recognizable renditions!
So I'm only 6 minutes into the episode. But watching the dwarves struggling to cross the long bridge through heat and freeze got me thinking about needing to build part of the fortress on the bridge itself. A bustling market place like the main strip of a bazaar. To cross you must not simply take the bridge, but must become a guest of the fortress. You will be safe. You will be warm and fed. You can even make trade with the best in the land. But know this...rooms do not come cheap. And the bridge is the only and the last bed you might see before the frigid north before you. Edit. Just saw the rest of the video. Haha, of course that was exactly the plan. Awesome. Love this series
Toads probably need a nest box to lay eggs. Love the goblins and elves of this serie, fearsome and otherwordly respectively. Also, >don't want to draw cutebolds >draw cute pupperbolds You foiled yourself !
Krugg has such a high standard for the quality of these crafts, I fear some day he might go into a "Stark Raving Mad" mood if he doesn't find the right resources...
i have a couple suggestions First, a Travellers Inn, underwater, glass roof, maybe glass floors. On Stilts. The Halfway Inn - Accessible via wooden pier and ladder down a Green Glass tube Second, the Fortress is Famous for it'S Platinum coins and Crafts, pave the road over the bridge with Platinum roads. A little show of wealth and a symbolic entrance into the Riches beyond
The giant mandrill and jaguar pic was so cute! Was suffering from the lack of Kruggsmash pretty hard yesterday, great to see this new episode today! Cheers! Ivan :D
Those elves look great. The lanky and pointy design make them blend in like they are twigs. And to top them off with pipes giving an eerie aura with all the smoke in the forest give a feeling of omnipresence. Ever since I saw your Crimson Trumpets elves, I'm always curious on how you decide to design your world and it's creatures. Can't wait to see more.
I love the "material culture" of the peoples in this settings. You have a great eye for envisioning a culture's general aesthetic tastes and how that would be reflected in their clothing and tools.
The goblins are like polar bears - their hairs are hollow and whitish/colorless by nature. Their characteristic purple or green colorations are caused by different types of symbiotic algae which grow within the hairs.
Nothing like waking up and hearing Quest 64, just 33 minutes into a Krugg Vid. These kinds of surface or semi-surface forts are actually my favorite, so this is another hit series for me.
Personally, I love that you redesign the core races in every world you make fortresses in. It really makes each world feel unique to me. Pugfaced kobolds and ratfaced goblins sound good to me. You know what I absolutely LOVED? In the Pumpkinhead people setting, the critters that looked like old-fashioned devils and spooky animals absolutely tickled me. I loved the hierarchy of face complexity to pumpkin-intelligence, with gods having the most human-like faces. Seriously dude, if you ever decide to kickstart an art book, I'd buy one for me and another for an art school.
Now this is an excellent form of story telling yay I can get behind! Also, FINALLY SOME GOOD DWARF FORTRESS GAMEPLAY AND STORY. Also your art is amazing!
When I see the notification I stop whatever I'm watching to come over, your vids are some of my favorite on youtube and I love what you have done since premium's release!
If that is the official (steam) tileset, they've done an amazing job. Very clear and concise, but elaborate enough to help the imagination get started. If you think there's no good things being made anymore, there's dwarf fortress and its wrestling system.
I really like the art style you do for this series. It's super neat too how it changes from world to world. Some worlds have green fleshy goblins, some worlds have fuzzy purple goblins, they're all super interesting and cool in their own way! I especially like how the elves are depicted this time around. I remember in the old Monster Killer series they were silly, not to serious, like a distant cousin of the dwarves, and when they come begging you to stop cutting down trees it's because they're peace-loving hippies who anthropomorphize the forest just a little too much. This time around they look serious, imposing, and alien. When they come to demand you stop harming the trees, they really could care less about how each individual twig feels, they are planning something far more sinister.
First off, artistic integrity is the most important thing to me. So drawn whatever you want. Have sure everyone will be happy to see it. Those who that want their own interpretation can draw their own interpretation. This is your world. Your creation and i'm happy that it's unique. Second off, wonderful to hear you ramble again. It's really fun to listen to what you have to say on a deeper level when you're not storytelling.
I love your drawings! They are dynamic, funny and apart from that also well composed. Having your own unique style is precious and let nobody keep you from making the stuff the way you want.
OH MY GAWD your pug Kobold drawings are next level of face-punch cute! I want merch with those on them!!! Thanks for another awesoem installment of a super interesting fort!
Lookin' good, you really got something here with these series. Doing great capturing a certain feel of the game environment with the storytelling and art, etc... seems to go well with the steam version graphics and stuff. Looking forward to more to come.
I really love how much detail you give to the cultures in your series! Each dwarven civilization has its own fashion, artistic style, sense of decoration, etc, and this even applies to migrants looking slightly different than long-term residents. The elves you draw are always different from series to series, and each is much more interesting than the generic stereotypes they could be. It really turns what could easily be a generic western fantasy tolkien pastiche into a living, breathing world.
I focused a bit on how you actually build mood this time and the sounds and pictures you use, and the timing. At least for the first couple of minutes. And damn, dude. So. Much. Quality. Great job as always, but the first few minutes actually are phenomenal with the little things.
Kruggsmash, once again love the episode! On the subject of an underground tunnel, maybe you have the grand bridge above ground, and a smaller set of minecarts underground to help the Northbridge residents shuttle their own goods (or themselves) from one side of the settlement to the other. Just a thought!
a dwarven road spanning the map, directly underneath the main bridge and with a ramp leading up to the trade area there. Blocked with mechanized bridges and with toll booths on either side of course.
Glad to see the new episode. The Goblin design is fairly interesting, they look a lot like Skaven more then Goblins; I guess we'll just RP them as Skaven in place of Goblins which is fine by me, Warhammer on the brain but to me the Ratfolk are as imposing a threat to Dwarves as the Goblins and their larger Orc kin. So yeah looking forward to what comes next. Also glad to see the bridge complete and amazed nobody died during the winter construction; perhaps it would be possible to find a way to train the dwarves to swim that way if something nasty does happen they stand a chance of not drowning. Which incidently with my starting dwarves in fortress embarks I usually give them two points in swimming just in case they do something stupid and end up in deep water.
Y'all have developed one of UA-cam's most captivating styles. Thank you for working so incredibly hard on conveying the best game ever to everyone who might stumble upon this.
Have to say i LIKE how you show Goblins in this Game :) They look really cool and evil, fitting well into the world :) Also.... giant Mandrill ? Your former Monkey loving Dwarfs a few games back would have KILLED for it ;) I like Cutebolds BUT ... am sure they not all have to be Cutebolds ^^ Kobold are as you imagin them ^^
Loving everything about this series! The way you depict the different cultures - like how humans dress their elephants differently from the elves - is so good. My favorite detail has to be the grown wooden cages. Also, your kobolds and goblins are wonderful!
Oh! I know what your bridge building dwarves need! A small stockpile of building material, closer to the worksite, and what better way to supply that stockpile than with a simple minecart, loaded and pushed around
Just wanted to say Krugg I think the way you vary the depictions of the races between your worlds is one of my favorite parts of your videos. I'm always excited to see what new takes you have on either physical characteristics or just cultural vibes like apparel and jewelry. Love the canid goblins.
Japan's current cultural depiction of kobolds and orcs is probably based on old dnd when it went over there. Kobolds are small dog people and orcs are specifically big pig people. Style aside (cute, ugly, noble, or monstrous, etc.), thats what you typically see from japanese kobolds and orcs. Goblins aren't much different though. Heck, old Gannon from Zelda is probably japenese "orc" -like.
A really good idea would to build the fortress over the bridge like a roof to it, with towers dotted here and there running down to the ground full of bedrooms or storage spaces. Maybe one extra massive tower connected to the meeting hall that is filled with different temples. There's a lot of really cool things that can be done with this. Ways to keep the dwarves inside all the time but still using the bridge.
I love the variation of styles for the goblins, kobolds and other creatures from series to series! Much more interesting than going with established designs and it really adds to the uniqueness of each world. They are randomly generated after all.
In all my days, I would have never expected to see a Misadventures of FlapJack reference in a Dwarf Fortress video. Heck, I haven't even thought of flapjack in years. A1 stuff here!
What a wild ramble. Just, y'know, so it's stated, I _adore_ the art you produce, particularly because of the irregularity and variety represented, seemingly driven by the random procedural nature of dorffort. Using the worldgen as a prompt generator - explicitly the sort of thing this genre thrives on. I love it. Draw your critters as it suits you.
im absolutely ADORING the looks into your dwarves culture youre giving - im honestly amazed you still manage to give every series/world a unique feel in that regard given how long its been. the different designs for goblins and kobolds are really fun too, the variations you do between worlds like that always add a lot to tone, like how elves run a spectrum between tall nature humans and sinister, bizarre fey type guys peering out of layers of wooden trinkets. BTW i have a guess re: the giant toads: i havent checked on the wiki but do they maybe lay eggs? it might be worth throwing a nest box in to try
I utterly adore your take on kobolds. Seeing them represented as little pug-looking things rather than like tiny lizardfolk took me by surprise, but I love it! It's very fitting :)
I've got to say you might make the best content on youtube, especially for passive relaxed viewing. The way you bring a story to life out of randomly generated nonsense is very impressive.
I like to imagine the one dwarf in the tavern who's like "wait, why are we building a bridge instead of a tunnel?" and everyone just glares at them
I want to imagine it's like those cyrptobro discords where everyone starts shouting about them spreading "FUD" and saying "Looks like somebody's not trying to get rich!"
Just think about the war bears those tree-hugging sunlighters will bring us after it’s finished!
Originally it absolutely was going to be a tunnel, massive and unstoppable lined with engravings and gold. However, one smart dwarf suggested if they made it above ground, all other races would be forced to use it, and in turn pay honour to the dwarves.

@@crazydude610 "But... how about... say... NO ELVES AT ALL?"
@@TheR00k Because making the elves feel inferior is better than getting rid of them.
I really love that both humans and elves came with elephants and krugg "dressed" them in different styles, to reflect different people/cultures. Fantastic, as always!
It's one of my favorite things :)
The giant mandril petting the jaguar like a housecat was too cute.
That sudden shift in art style that vabok went through was hilarious. Reminds me of that old cartoon-Flapjack?
I loved flapjack, in all its grotesque beauty
Yeah Flapjack. Although the gag was directly lifted from Spongebob.
Which, in turn, was done back in Ren and Stimpy. Might even go farther back than that too!
yeah that grossup was a quality joke
Old.
That cartoon came out less then 20 years ago.

"being headed up by Mosus" got a jump out of me
Wasnt that the Boar-man from an early series? The one with the vampires if i am not mistaken. Those were so so good
@@liandel Good old Honeystoker, Stetár Gusgash. Tales of Blood and Honey, with the poor unwilling goblin vampire in the dwarves' drinking well.
Still my absolute favorite story … what a gem

That misadventures of flapjack frame and the scream was perfect
The little kobold shrine is so cute. I realy hope one will take the offerings.

All Vabok needs is lots of children and grandchildren and he will pretty much be Walder Frey.
I really liked the depiction of the elves at 22:17 where they are all shifty and blend into the trees, with all of their pipes sticking out
Yeah, his interpretations of different creatures are quite unusual and fascinating
The giant mandrill cuddling the cheetah is my favorite drawing from this episode by far. Absolutely love your work.

Yeah, Kobold Camp- it's been a long time since I've thought of that mod, to be honest. I personally like Cutebolds
I think the one DF kobold that had the thong, and the subsequent drawing of it as a cutebold really cemented the cutebold as an icon.
It was part of masterwork from what I remember.
Modern Kobolds, aka small Lizard people, are also cute >:(
I love kobold camp mod. It was fun to build their flimsy, but trap ridden forts and camps in an inherently hostile world
One bridge to rule them all, One bridge to find them,

I'm really a big fan of that goddess of wealth with her long arm. It somehow hits just the right mythological feel
… It’s got that unhinged Hindu mythos feel to it, eh? >):^D

I'm absolutely in love with your story telling. Another Kruggsmash episode of the highest craftskruggship. Every detail is of the highest quality.

… “Why why did foolish dwarf thing build make a bridge instead of digging?!” >)X^D
Y'all have developed one of UA-cam's most captivating styles. Thank you for working so incredibly hard on conveying the best game ever to everyone who might stumble upon this.
I, for one, really love how much variation you bring to how the various creatures are rendered from world to world
Have to say i LIKE how you show Goblins in this Game :)
They look really cool and evil, fitting well into the world :)
Also.... giant Mandrill ? Your former Monkey loving Dwarfs a few games back would have KILLED for it ;)
I like Cutebolds BUT ... am sure they not all have to be Cutebolds ^^
Kobold are as you imagin them ^^
i spit out my coffee at 9:30, hilarious
WOOHOO!!!! Thank you and good morning Kruggsmash!
That realistic portrait caught me off guard hahaha

Loving everything about this series! The way you depict the different cultures - like how humans dress their elephants differently from the elves - is so good. My favorite detail has to be the grown wooden cages. Also, your kobolds and goblins are wonderful!
It's always a good day when it begins with some good ol' dwarven stories!
More Kruggsmash, yay! :) Have fun everyone
Gotta love pug-kobolds and rat-goblins. I appreciate how every world you play has unique designs, makes total sense.
Depending on trade for food and not growing it? "That's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see how it works out."
Man, I get busy for a bit and suddenly there's 6 Kruggsmash videos to catch up on.
The SpongeBob level highly detailed jumpscare had me ROLLING
A really good idea would to build the fortress over the bridge like a roof to it, with towers dotted here and there running down to the ground full of bedrooms or storage spaces. Maybe one extra massive tower connected to the meeting hall that is filled with different temples. There's a lot of really cool things that can be done with this. Ways to keep the dwarves inside all the time but still using the bridge.
LOVED the mandril cuddling with a jaguar, but goblin artwork takes the cake, amazing!
I love the variation of styles for the goblins, kobolds and other creatures from series to series! Much more interesting than going with established designs and it really adds to the uniqueness of each world. They are randomly generated after all.
These new elf and goblin designs are very cool.
Definitely liking this Byzantine/North African style you've gone with for this series.
Oh man, I got overly excited to hear you mention "Quest64" I've never heard of another person who's played this game lol
Goblin ratmen?
Good good! man thing keep making more video for the great horned rat!
… Oi! Wutz dis noise about all da gretchins turnin’ into purple skaven? Had too much black fungus beer, weird boi? >)B^D
