In my experience, some soldiers would rather train than handle their wants. So training makes them the happiest of all the possible activities. Some dwarves will fulfill their needs when they are set to train as long as their squad does not have a barracks designated to train in.
In my playthroughs, military dwarfs are happiest when they're training. This has been kinda paradoxical at times. I recall one dwarf axewoman with a cowardly disposition and traumatized by violence. She'd get into battle against goblins, kill a dozen of them, and plummet down to red mood because she abhored violence. I set the squad to constant training and she'd be up to neutral by the end of the season. As far as I can tell, constant training means they have a constant succession of positive memories associated with the learning and teaching of skills. In my case, I also them training in a well appointed barracks featuring a 4x4 screw pump mist generator which probably helped a lot.

you absolute villain. that cliff hanger was a doozy. but gonna be one hell of a start to episode 7. as always the video, editing. story telling, art and narration is top notch. always a joy to sit down and watch. if I may touch on the soldiers moods. i'm pretty new to dwarf fortress so can't really speak from experience. but i think all dwarfs no matter what get upset seeing death so soldiers that see it all the time will naturally break over time. as for their personalities. i think i saw a someone mention in a video that if they get a positive mood from training, they're a good fit for the military, if they don't they will probably start breaking when fighting starts. so it would be a massive hassle but put all the dwarfs in squads and rotate them out in training. one this will help keep them fit probably but will also help to filter out who is a good fit to be a soldier. but like i said would be a massive hassle so up to you how you decide to handle the problem. but again amazing video and glad to hear your able to get more personal projects done in your free time. i love your content but would hate to see you burn out over it. may, Idrath ever smile on your fortunes, Krug

I love how the artifact throne at 13:55 in the craftsdwarf guildhall is full of leftover seeds from eating. Something scummy and cheesy at the same time, is making the king's suite "dual-purpose" by assigning locations to it to fulfill agreements. Apparently the nobles don't mind having a lively place.

So absolutely go with your gut! Get a little weird with it, and chase where your passion takes you. Your style has gotten incredibly good and distinct, and your ability to carve a gripping story out of the lump of rock DF serves you is unmatched. I’m consistently surprised and delighted by the quirky designs, and it in turn inspires me for my home dnd game. It’s obvious how much time, love, and effort you put into this (and of course that goes for Mrs. K as well!) From one stranger to another, thank you for the hundreds of hours of entertainment and wonder you give freely. I’m sure it’s not easy, and I’m sure there are times you doubt yourself, but you really do make the world a bit better, and I think that’s all anyone can ask a bearded bastard to do!
the elf designs on this are so great, not monstrous, but still inhuman. i think the pipes are great too, gives them an aloofness different from the classic Tolkienesque sort, and the way they're always standing off somewhere, like the trees they so value and resemble
YELLING! This story is so freaking fun, how dare you, haha! I am enjoying this fort and your narrative braiding of the events at hand so, so much. \o/ You have such a skill, Krugg! Great art, great pacing, and kudos to your spouse for lovely colours as usual. Can't wait for the next one!
For the millitary dwarves, I've actually had the opposite issue since steam release. It seems some dwarves just need to get into fights every now and then. The way I've been dealing with it is that if I see any of my dwarves start being unhappy, I look to see if one of their needs is to fight something. If so, I put them into the military and have the schedule for training be on rotation so that the wariors who also like crafting can do that half of the year.
Amazing job! I think building fortified gate houses with towers on each side. It can be a spot for armories and barracks, and maybe craftshops and houses.
Still one of my favorites youtubers to date. This level of care and artistry.... I find diffucult to put in words. There is something so wonderful about the narration, artwork, and gameplay. I am so glad you're back, Krug!

I don't have much to say except I am enthralled whenever a new episode of a fortress comes out, and I love the end-of-episode ramblings and fanart and behind the scenes stuff. keep doing what you're doing if it makes you happy and brings you success, because I love it too!
I just wanted to say that even though I don't normally watch your videos as they come out because of the whole "desire to see what happens next is super strong" I love everything that you make and you deserve many good hugs.
Another awesome episode. Really enjoying the Northbridge series. I've taken so many of your ideas from this setting and used them for my DnD game. My players especially loved the elvish smoking and general attitude
I don't have trouble with my military. Usually I have 3 squads. Each are set to train for 2 months and then have 4 months off duty, just doing their normal work. Each squad for different months, like the standard schedule of staggered. Setting it up is a tad tedious, but once done it works pretty well. In smaller forts I basically have everyone beside the broker to be in a squad, so they can defend themselves, when surprised by something. Obviously I also need work to be done, so they keep their normal professions. That seems to work well for both having a military at hand and keeping the dorfs happy. Just make sure that there's all the time enough off duty to work all the needed stuff. So I keep my miners in different squads, not all of them together. Same for planters, brewers etc. so at least some are always doing their usual work and provide food or dig etc. Awesome video. As per usual. The wait between episodes is so worth it for the quality you provide. I love your drawings. Makes the story you tell come so much more alive. The for"shadowing" of the bugs was also nice. I thought a megabeast or something would come at some point, but fascinating what in fact happened.

Tore my meniscus on Tuesday, got my wisdom teeth out this morning. Perfect time for some Kruggsmash content.
The creativity required to design and draw that artifact chest is stupendous. Sapphire spikes worked into the kiwiman's design which has a chest in the chest. Stellar artistry, and ingenuity.
"both house and butter" might be the funniest phrase i've ever heard, bravo
you absolute villain. that cliff hanger was a doozy. but gonna be one hell of a start to episode 7. as always the video, editing. story telling, art and narration is top notch. always a joy to sit down and watch. if I may touch on the soldiers moods. i'm pretty new to dwarf fortress so can't really speak from experience. but i think all dwarfs no matter what get upset seeing death so soldiers that see it all the time will naturally break over time. as for their personalities. i think i saw a someone mention in a video that if they get a positive mood from training, they're a good fit for the military, if they don't they will probably start breaking when fighting starts. so it would be a massive hassle but put all the dwarfs in squads and rotate them out in training. one this will help keep them fit probably but will also help to filter out who is a good fit to be a soldier. but like i said would be a massive hassle so up to you how you decide to handle the problem. but again amazing video and glad to hear your able to get more personal projects done in your free time. i love your content but would hate to see you burn out over it. may, Idrath ever smile on your fortunes, Krug
You're monster Krugg... look at all those traps!
Btw make some windows in your underwater structures. Let dwarves watch over their fallen.
Frog-guts everywhere!
Oooh, look at the funny fiiiish!
The frog traps will continue until they learn not to run into the Saw Room.
Bridges are so cool.
The idea of a bridge fortress to connect continents has lived rent free in my head pretty much the entire time I've known about dwarf fortress.
It's so cool to seeing your first spin on the implementation of the idea.
31:22 Love that fanart of the fortress especially! Wish we could see more of those, it's pretty satisfying.
your dnd maps look so good!!! always a joy seeing your art
What an amazing episode!! And that cliffhanger!! The forbodding sound earlier in the episode! Just amazing!! *chefs kiss*
That's such a good cliffhanger! Hoping that the dwarves will survive
love that fly wing sound effect
Thank you for your videos as always. Your DF series are out of all the insane amounts of youtube I've watched the only thing that has stuck with me and I am still looking forward to every time now that I barely spend time on here anymore!
Another masterpiece of the highest craftsdwarfship. I will certainly be rewatching this one by it's conclusion.
Build jail, assign as dungeon, then captain of guard. Love the videos as always. Northbridge becoming the Mountainhome would be great to see.
Without these videos for inspiration, there's no way I'd have the motivation to play Dwarf Fortress as much as I do. Your videos have allowed me to truly enjoy what is likely the greatest video game ever created.
Giant Flies ,eh? Fitting that the Elves would be riding on insects!
Been following you since the original series, and been a patron since 2020, and I gotta say, I have the most fun watching when you seem to have the most fun playing/ doing the art.
Man i absolutely love this series, long time viewer whose never commented. Just felt like it today! Absolutely love every single video you put out
Haha hell yeah! Glad that this fort and this episode in particular got you commenting. Thanks for watching, Maja
Still one of my favorites youtubers to date. This level of care and artistry.... I find diffucult to put in words. There is something so wonderful about the narration, artwork, and gameplay. I am so glad you're back, Krug!
Hey kruggy, I just wanted to say that you and your videos are awesome and I thank you for making them. You can't imagine how many times they cooled me down and made my day. It feels like being 10 again and listen to a good detective story on tape. The best thing is, I have absolute no idea how to play dwarf fortress. I'm glad you are uploading more frequently again. Keep up the good work!
This is my favourite series since Scorchfountain. Keep up the great work!
Man I got the chills during the ending part. I'm really emotionally invested in these dwarves!
Probably the best dworffort content on the net!! Love your work❤❤
Thanks again for this episode Krug! The story, art and rambling combined make for great entertainment :)
Another awesome episode. Really enjoying the Northbridge series. I've taken so many of your ideas from this setting and used them for my DnD game.
My players especially loved the elvish smoking and general attitude
Wow, can't wait to see what happens next in this series! Great foreshadowing with that noise early on
Music: 10/10
Story: 10/10
Art:10/10
Characters 10/10
Thank you for existing. Love all your talking at the end, unironicly my fav part
I wasn't feeling so hot this morning but then I saw a new Kruggsmash dropped. Everything is right as rain.
