I've watched this 3 times now and I get more and more out of it each time. As Guthrie says near the end, "It's impossible not to get better!" Thanks for having him drop by, Brett!
Sure thing Bill!
I love how Brett Papa, who by the way, is no slouch at the guitar, steps back to let Guthrie shine!
These two are among my favourite guitarists doing the UA-cam thing today.
Yep I love just chillin when I am around Guthrie he is terrifying so I figure why not just let him do his thing.
Brett has Class..Nice playing
This man plays like an angel.
Every musical key consists of seven notes.
The key of E major consists of these seven notes: E F# G# A B C# D#
The chords in the key of E major are as follows:
E major chord consists of the notes, E - G# - B
F# minor chord consists of the notes, F# - A - C#
G# minor chord contains the notes, G# - B - D#
A major chord contains the notes, A - C# - E
B major chord contains the notes, B - D# - F#
C# minor chord consists of the notes, C# - E - G#
D# diminished chord consists of the notes, D# - F# - A
What do you notice? Every single Chord in the Key of E major is made of some combination of three notes from the key.
What the lesson is trying to teach you is when the rhythm guitarist is playing one of those chords, the player soloing should play the notes of that chord.
So if the rhythm guitar player is playing the E major chord, the soloist should focus on the notes E, G# and B.
When the rhythm player then changes chords to the A major chord, the soloist should focus on the notes A, C#, E.
Let's take it one step further - The solo player can add spice by adding other notes from the key but they should still focus on the chord notes.
So if the rhythm guitarist is playing the E major chord, the soloist should continue to focus on the notes that make up the E major chord (E, G#, B) but the soloist can also add in the other notes from the key ( F# A C# D# ). The trick is to focus on the notes that make up the E major chord, and throw in other notes from the key sporadically.
If the rhythm guitarist then started playing the A major chord, focus on the notes that make it up (A - C# - E) but keep in mind you can add the other notes from the key as well (F# G# B D#) to add more flavor.
If you can dedicate the time to memorize all of the notes in the popular keys, what notes make up each chord in those keys, and where those notes are on the fretboard, you'll be better off than 99% of guitarists who all just think in shapes and hit a lifelong plateau. (Which happened to me for a long time)
You're awesome for taking the time to explain this. Thank you!
Totally agree! Makes a huge difference.
I will get busy!!
I don't understand how the 3rd chord is a G# Major? and a G#7 at that. Can you help me out with this? I thought only the 5 could be a Dominant7 chord.
@the supernatural thanks for the reply. If the key of EMaj is:
E, F#m, G#m, A, B, C#m, D#°
And the 7th chords diatonically are:
Emaj7, F#min7, G#min7, Amaj7, B7, C#min7, D#min7(b5)
Then my question is how does a dominant 7th chord fit over the 3 and still be in the key of Emaj? I agree if it sounds good it is good. I was just curious if was missing something.
My God this dude is from another planet... The way he plays I can never predict where he's going... So good thanks fellas
Yeah he pretty much is an endless supply of ideas!
@@BrettPapa ...wish to God I could see the fretboard as he does...
That comment definitely nails it!
His trick is maybe switching in visual mode when he have no inspiration.
this switching causes a kind of break, and then, stimulates the emergence
of new ideas. Any trick is good for breaking Our old unconscious vocabulary
The trick is to get “switching into visual mode” out of the way early on so you can focus on making music and not thinking. There’s no shortcuts. Spending time on the fundamentals now will reap huge benefits in the near future. The light bulb will go on for sure.
I don't think there's a better guitarist alive today! Absolutely amazing feel, technique and melody. Wow, incredible. Thank you Guthrie and great lesson Papa
Yeah he is pretty freakin amazing! Thanks for tuning in!
I have learned more by just watching this video than I have in 6 months.
Thank you thank you
Sure thing!
CAGED makes sense now. I got the forms, but how it unlocks the fretboard just clicked. What a monster player!
Guthrie’s playing at the end was simply outstanding.........super tasteful and an incredible feel. He’s quickly becoming a favorite!
Yep he is awesome!
this is like sitting in a room with someone really good showing you the little things that really free up your playing and gives ideas.... love your vids man, this approach is gold
Thank you guys for doing this. I'm really glad you've met and become friends. There are a lot of great players out there but when I watch Guthrie play I see the player I'd like to aspire to be especially with this style of just chill playing but being able to command the fret-board and bend it to my will. Playing super fast is cool - but this - this is awesome. I'd love to see more.
More on the way! Thanks for watching!
The more I listen to GT..this is how I hear my solos and phrases..in my head Brilliant and Tasty
Nuclear melody - how, how, how! Such a lovely, humble guy who is so enthusiastic to share his knowledge. A true musical genius.
What Guthrie says about learning the chords and scales around them is so true, and better than any lesson. My playing vastly improved after getting into the CAGED thing and being able to see everything in any position. Those triads he showed at the end proves it. LOL I've still got a lot to learn.
I really enjoyed this....you guys are amazing, thanks a million!
This is absolutely beautiful playing the playing is as beautiful as your Gibson guitar which is breathtaking.. I definitely will watch this until I can do these licks I love this style of playing .. thanks so much for the great lessons Guthrie Trapp
So So Awesome !!!!! Brett the way you ask the questions in relation to how Guthrie is seeing the fretboard and his progression's is exactly what we all need to know. You have a great interview style and rapport with your guests, much better than others on UA-cam. Rock On Papa !!!
Ps. Guthrie is such a complete player and generous with his knowledge .
Well done !!!!!!!
Awesome! Glad you liked it! Thanks for the kind words!
eric blaich
Totally agree with each of your comments about both great teachers!!!
Yes, thank you, Brett! Thanks for wrangling him and asking the questions we all wanted to know!
i want to thank you so much for these lessons. ive been playing the guitar for many years and consider myself a rather advanced player who found some of these things out but got stuck pretty badly at one point. noone could really answer me the question: "how do you play solos?". i was learning the shapes with blind eyes, mechanically, not visualizing the applications, and hated it... now I found your videos which fit my playing level perfectly.. I want to thank you, Papa, for your great didactical talent to break the fretboard down to shapes and - above all - present the applications of them! and i want to thank you, Guthrie, for your immensely melodic playing. you've just become one of my favorite players since you mix blues pentatonic and jazzy scales with major 7ths and 2nds I love so much - and you dont get "overjazzed" and abstract. I was looking for soloing like this for a long time and the fact that you simply explain this stuff in such and easy way is a huge gift for me. enough talking, going to grab the guitar!
Good to see you guys together again
I am in awe of that beginning jam, gentlemen. If you could record a record of that, I could listen to it all day. As unlearned as I am in music theory, I think it all comes down to playing around chord changes, which is what *I think* this lesson is about. Man, such amazing playing. Brilliant vid!
Thanks for watching!
Me too mate it is stunning
U don't need to be a expert at theory.Ur right this is showing how to play around chord changes...
I have bought all of your programs Papa, and Guthrie I signed up with Artist Works on a 3 instructor program and got hammered for several months before realizing I was paying full price instead of the discounted price, they cancelled my subscription but not before I got all the way through your course. They have sense offered a discounted price so I might sign back up. I wish I could afford the Skype Lessons. Papa please hustle and bust your tail to keep the family and the Mrs. HAPPY to be in Nashville. I pray everything works out for ya’ll. It took a lot of faith to make the move, I am proud of you. GOD bless ya’ll.
Probably the best put together lesson I've watch on improv. Thanks heaps guys.
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
This is *tremendous.* I'm just starting to "see" the chord shapes and scales and this is like looking behind the magician's curtain. A key reason this lesson/demo works so well is Papa does such a great job leading Guthrie through bite-sized examples. Thanks both!
Awesome to hear! Thanks so much for watching!
I was in the other room when I heard this mouth watering, jaw dropping sound coming from my laptop because I left youtube running on.
What the hell was that? So many tasty licks lined up one after another after another. That was just beautiful. Thank you so much for that.
Fender and Gibson always sound perfect together no matter the position!
Yep its a good combo! Thanks for tuning in!
This JAM at the end, sincerely, warms my heart. You keep kickin' ass Guthrie!!! Good man.
Thanks for watching!
...two really really good guitar players who don't mind sharing their knowledge with others ....thx fellows
Started playing guitar at 13; I'm 36 now and find that your vids have taught me more in the last year than any other avenue before. Many thanks for the knowledge!
Wow thanks! Glad they are helping you out!
I just came across this video for the third time and I'm still amazed. Great interview Brett! Guthrie Trapp is the best! And he answers his email! 👍
Yep. Guthrie is a class act and an amazing talent!
This way of thinking is beginning to have a tremendous effect on how I view playing. I've been trapped in pentatonics for years, and devised an exercise that I thought would help me, where I would stay in the same spot, but play the corresponding pentatonic scale for each chord, like 4th position for first chord, stay in the same place and play 3rd position (or whatever position it would be) for the next chord, not realizing all I am doing is trying to force a key change over a chord change. I could hear it wasn't right, and man, was I way off. So thankful for these resources.
Fantastic Papa! I have been played for 35 years and this is the most clear and fundamental guitar lesson that I’ve ever seen! Great!
Awesome! Glad you liked the video!
super blues in different variants. different styles of guitar playing, every honor.every tone is clearly heard. purely played. The blues are played by the spirit that wears
That is what you call style and class! Beautiful phrasing! Love it!!!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for tuning in!
Best and most useful application of harmony theory ever. Thanks.
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
22:32 just kept listening 🎧 🎶 over and over thank you. Great end of a shift ! Just starting to get into the world of guitar 🎸. How can I not be inspired to continue my education after listening to that ?! Cheers !
Awesome to hear Charles! Thanks for checking it out!
Fantastic video,,. you guys are easy to watch, not repetitive and your discussions are very laid back & extremely informative. After 20 + years of playing guitar, I just started understanding the caged system and major scale voicing. The best door thats opened for my playing in decades thanks to you guys. Definitely the type of atmosphere I feel comfortable continuing guitar.
Keep them coming & all the best in the New Year !
Große Klasse! Habt ihr richtog gut gemacht!

Excellent!
Thanks Robert! Glad you liked it!
Really beautifully done. Thank you guys for caring enough to share this information.
Thanks for tuning in!
Great stuff. Thanks for breaking it down slowly and keeping it simple. Much appreciated.
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
Loved this! Thank you so much!
You are welcome!
Fantastic lesson! I've been "playing" guitar for almost 30 years now and I discovered this exact concept about 5 years ago. My playing has improved more in the last 5 years than in the 25 before. I can't stress enough how right Guthrie is about this. Learn the CAGED chords all the way up the neck, know the major scale in each of those positions and be able to arpeggiate the chords. Boom!
Yep I agree! Same exact thing happened to me!
I can't tell you how excellent this is
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
The Internet needs more videos like this. Great playing all round. Thanks to you both :)
Sure thing!
Thanks. Very informative! You both are sensatuinal pickers. Lovr your instructional videis.
Thanks man! Glad you liked it!

Awesome! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Endless licks. Amazing tone and amazing playing.

Beautiful music!
Thanks for watching!
A banquet of tasty licks, concepts and practical theory. Thanks chaps!
Sure thing!
I've been stuck for a long time, in terms of guitar playing. Playing has not been fun at all, but this dude inspired me to sit down on my couch and try to learn this stuff. Thank you Papastache for making this video!
Sure thing! Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks was just looking for this yesterday!
Incredible. Loved the tips.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome - Truly Awesome
Thanks for checking it out Charlie!
Def one of my favorite players thanks for this
You are welcome!
Amazing and invaluable video. It’ll take months to digest and apply this practical, useful knowledge. Beautiful playing in the triad section.
Thanks for watching! More Guthrie coming soon!
I love this video it helps so much. to hear two people talking about concepts in between to make them sink in good. I always come back to this video to steer me into the right direction of learning the guitar the right way.
Would be cool if you guys can make another video talking about the licks in between the chord shapes or the path followed to get to the next triad/chord shape and the thinking behind it.
Thanks a lot
Sure thing! Good idea. We are getting together soon!
Had to watch this again. What make him so good is his dynamics. This is something I don't ever see talked about really. He perfectly chooses which notes to play loudly and which to play softly. Also, when to speed it up to get up on the beat and then when to lay back. A person could have the tabs to these solos but it would take a lot of years to develop those dynamics as good as Guthrie.
Yep, agreed!
These two are awesome!
Thanks for checking it out!
This is something else. Two folks into what they're doing and creating magic, whilst divulging some of the ingredients. Perfect setting and P asking exactly the questions I'd be wondering. Thanks for this... I hope it happens again sometime. Take care!
More coming soon! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
I love Guthrie’s playing and teaching style. He is so right about visualizing the fretboard in chord shapes. It takes effort and time but it’s totally changed my ability to play the guitar. Thank you for having Guthrie on and I hope to see him again.
Thanks for checking it out! More coming soon!
Absolutely - know all of the chord shapes in all positions, hit the chord tones some and some wee bits of scales and you're half way to very melodic soloing. Tim Pierce uses chord tones a lot too.
I find that backing tracks are invaluable for this. I use Band in a Box to feed in chord progressions and can play it back in any of the inbuilt styles.
(I had BIAB for years and never knew what really to do with it lol)
The late jazzer, Tal Farlow, played improv over scales within chord shapes. Great instructional vid, guys.
A lot of work to do but sounds well worth the patience, persistence and practice! Deeply appreciate your well delivered teachings.
Thanks for checking them out!
This video leaves me a smile on my face... Those impromptu jam was awesome...i knew now who i should be digging in to.. Guthrie your a killer man!!!
It’s the good stuff!
@@BrettPapa totally agree...like ive watch this 3x now just today..just trying to figure out Guthrie's licks 😄

Crazy to have these lessons for FREE 🤯 fantastic video guys 🔥🎸🖤
Thanks for checking us out! We both have courses you can buy too if you really want to go deep lol!
At 27:10 ish is the most valuable insight I've ever heard. Simple and extremely effective.
Understatement of the year...lol
That bit was unreal. Makes it look so simple but so amazing to see what’s hopefully possible by dedicating proper practice to learning those three note triads all within the sake scale shape.
Great lesson from Trapp! Thank you gents!
Sure thing!
Great playing guys. The intro to this vid is awesome! Great lesson too.
Thanks for checking it out!
Beautiful. SUBLIME!
Guthrie has that effect on people!
Guthrie is the freakin Man! And so you are Big Poppa!
Yes he is! Love seeing him play! Thanks for checking us out!
That s beautiful. The fundamentals of chords. Seems easy but at the same time so Hard. Thanks A lot!
You are welcome!
He is amazing at the guitar. I gotta say you are the most talented person I have seen in a very long time!
Guthrie has that effect on people haha!
Guthrie is the best flat out guitar player Ive ever seen in person I talked with him briefly at Roberts on Broadway when he first came to Nashville he was playing with Don K when I came back home I told everybody about him he had a huge impact on me
Yep he is one of the best I’ve ever seen as well. You should see him jamming at his house haha! Ridiculous!!!
My lord is this helpful. Thank you so much!
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
anybody hear Sublime's santeria in this opening jam or am i just crazy:)
Haha!
A little Ian Moore satisfied mixed in
I thought the same thing
Def
Nope
GT is the real deal.Every once in a while an awesome player comes down the road! Wow!!! That was very helpful how he showed the E chord shapes up the neck. It can be adapted to any key.
Yep I have been around him and seen him play so many times and he never doesn't amaze me. Absolute beast on the guitar.
