Derek Blakley - Dingwall Guitars - Haji's Kitchen Medley Bass Playthrough

- Okay.. so late last year when I hit Sheldon up for a NAMM badge, he one-upped me and asked if I'd demo this new bass at his booth this year. So, taking into consideration that one of the reasons Dingwall signed me as an endorser in the first place is because I showed no fear in unleashing a blazing bunch of flashy fanned-fret fiddlybits when I picked one up for the first time in 2001, (and it being NAMM, after all), I worked up this medley of some of the showiest parts of a few Haji's Kitchen songs and also one of the difficult new Eumeria songs (Shiitake.. already uploaded a playthrough last year).
Both the video and audio are a "best of" of the 6 passes I did. I used two cameras for each pass, with mostly different angles. I'd rather have just pulled the audio from one perfect take, but there weren't any of those.. this medley is akin to an Olympic gymnastics routine, in that it's tough to nail every element 10/10 every time. So, no "punching in" per-se, and all of the transitions from part-to-part are honest. For the really difficult bits, I've done my best to match the video take to the audio take in the final cut, but I've also chosen a lot of what I thought were the best angles, too. If you spot a place where what you're seeing doesn't exactly match what you're hearing, you'll just have to deal with the disappointment, as I can't be arsed to open this premiere session back up!
Anyway, in the spirit of the Nutri-Matic Drink Synthesizer, "share and enjoy". :)
The songs these excerpts come from can be found on either the Twenty Twelve or Sucker Punch albums, available on Amazon, iTunes, etc.

This still blows my mind Derek
Cheers, mate!
Спустя годы слушаю снова и восхищаюсь )
Absolutely amazing.
If i dont watch this at least once a day i die a little
Man, I could listen to this for days! Super clean playing!
I played a Fender Precision fretless in my younger days and am always on the hunt for bands with intelligent graceful, fluid yet powerful bass. You sir, are a Master and your solo on Sidartha in particular , in my opinion is perfection.
After watching this video, I listened to Haji's Kitchen and you have become one of my favorite! Love your playing Derek!
+Woo Young Cho Sweet! Thanks so much! :)
This is so god-damn inspiring. The Techniques, the compositions, the groove, the feel. F**K!! This is an amazing look at what bass can really offer to a band or as a stand along solo instrument.
fantastic playing, watching this makes me want to cash out and get an afterburner!!!
+Tyler Rosentreter You should.. LOVE this bass!
+Tyler Rosentreter Me too.
Sounds like a slightly progged up style that Ryan Martinie would use, if he also had moderate interest in tech. death. Moments also reminded me a bit of Aghora's debut, mostly the jazzy leads. Phenomenal playing, sir!
ok.. finally getting back around to this. How the hell have I never heard of Aghora before? Malone is killing it on this album!
ha ha ha woooo! what a joy to hear and see that! you ROCK! dude. Man I appreciate your wonderful talent!
Every time I watch this I’m as jaw dropped as the first time I saw it. Incredible as always
The part from 1:10 to 3:00 is badass. You, my kind sir, have some crazy good bass playing skills
Cheers, mate! That solo was a pain to pull together.. comes out of this song: ua-cam.com/video/DZOmWbe3jKE/v-deo.html
Serious playing skills here! Beautiful bass!
Amazing playing, killer tone. Looking forward to more videos !
your bass sounds sublime! your technique is flawless, all the best for you derek!
Found this thinking it was something totally different and it blew my mind. 👌
I finally watched this all the way through and I had to remind myself to breathe. lol You're amazing.
That´s why you are one of my favorite bass players, you combine several techniques to make riff not boring at all, I fckng love the Siddhartha solo!!!
That was so dope dude! moar MOAR!
Great bass + great playing!
Damn I need to practice. And get lessons. And to quit bass and pick up the triangle maybe. Tastefully and insane shred, all at once. I very much enjoyed this video.
+Joshua Ryan Cheers, Joshua! Glad you like.
You, man, are insane! Maximum respect!
Nice one fella.... awesome bass!
!
holy crap dude just killing it!!
Sidhartha bass was just fucking beautiful, what a masterpiece
No words! Derek you are truly master!
2019 and this video still kicks ass, amazing playing!
I saw you guys when I was in jr high in Odessa Texas at Dos Amigos I think. Not that you'd remember that but I don't know how in the world I forgot about you guys until now. Some of the sickest bass playing/writing I have ever seen in my life. Hats off to you man.
Totally remember Odessa! HK played gigs out there with another band Project 232. Great times, and thanks!
I remember project 232. Singer was electrocuted at work right? I remember there was a benefit show for him at the Coliseum here. My old drummer sang in a band that played at the benefit. Sad deal, but those were the good ol days.
Thanks for the reply!
Brilliant! 🍻
Wow
This.Is.Awesome.
Faaantastic stuff!
frickfrack me sideways those tapping parts are extremely tasty and add such amazing contrast to the rest of the music and the more heavier parts.
one monster of bass....great master...
Man... you deserve more views)
When I first saw this video all those years ago I knew I had to have an afterburner one day, I finally got one last month and oh boy was it worth the wait
Congrats, Alex! They're wonderful!
I can't begin to tell you how inspired I am! I've been playing bass for a while and I've seen some great players, but you, my friend, are on a whole different level! I remember hearing "Free" a long time ago and saying "THAT is the kind of bass player I want to be!". You've got EVERYTHING-technique, tone, feel, groove, style-you've got it all! I wish I'd found this back a while ago. I'm a fan and a sub. I hope, when you get some time, that you'll post more vids, they're like drug, I can't stop watching them!
Thanks so much! There'll be more to come later this year.
@@derekofbass -You getting a new bass, bro? I see a Dingwall ABZ 6/3 on the Dingwall website that's remarkably similar to your ABHS! Hopefully that's you and you're gonna be posting some stuff soon-ish?! Take care!
@@pbass6811 got it a few weeks ago, yes! Mine is indeed on the ABZ page.. it's the black swamp ash with the green grain, blackout neck and green block inlays. We're currently in the woodshed, and hope to have something new uploaded before Christmas. I'm derekofbass on both FB and insta if you want to follow. -- and thanks again, mate.. I much appreciate the kind words!
@@derekofbass You got it! I'll look for you on IG and FB! I should have my ABZ's this time next year! I can't play like you, but I'll have some killer basses and I'll keep 'shedding! Thanks for the inspiration!
You've just became my favorite bass player, I really like your style (and ofcourse the bass :P). I especially like the way you mix techniques into your playing. I have a long way to go if I want to play like that, but we all have to start somewhere eh?
Also you very much convinced me to get a Dingwall for my next bass that tone and Low B clarity is killer. Keep up the awesome shredding and grooves! \m/(>.
+Joey D. Thanks, Joey! Very true.. everyone starts at square one. Enjoy the Dingwall when you score!
Bestial!
Hot damn that was great
snoochie boochies!
after seeing this... i am buying a bass!!
Ooh man, love your sound :3 so thick :3
+Milan Jejina (Yeqy)
You could definetly give John Myung a run for his money. Subscribed!
Great cover bro. Nice work
+Jon Nodtveidt Thanks! Not a cover tho, really... I'm the guy from the band. :)
+Derek Blakley LOOOOL. Well done covering yourself bro xDDD
tack, Jon! :)
Great bass for sure but if you give to thus guy a piece of wood with strings attached he will be able to make a symphony! I am astonished for the way to play.....simply incredible.....fantastic....many many compliments.
Dope.
Yo, what strings do you use? Love your playing by the way, that's something that inspires me to try and get better!
+Jason Duffy Thanks! GHS contact core super steels in this case... 130, 101, 80, 60, 48 &
35... I like them a bit heavier than what comes from the factory.
Damn!
Just put an ad in the paper to sell all of my equipment. Damn.
OMG!
👊👍
If Oscar the Grouch was a bass.
That low string burp though.
Hey Derek! I have a quick question...the black finger. I've theorized for a few years about how they might impact my sound and I've been on the fence about buying one. I've never encountered one in person and just wondered how your tone is enhanced by it? Having had one do you find it indispensable?
It's a nice compressor, but maybe a little noisy and it doesn't have attack/release controls. I sold it and picked up a Darkglass SuperSymmetry
Hey Derek, awesome playing on this. Makes me want to upgrade from my Combustion to the Afterburner XXX.
What pre-amp do you have in that bass?
Cheers, bud! Mine has the Glockenklang.
Gotta ask was the song face down inspired somewhat by primus’s tommy the cat?
As far as our band members go, Rob and I definitely love some "Herb-era" Primus, but no.. that wasn't something we were thinking about when working the song up.
Do you have tabs available by chance ? Love your Bass riff by the way and a big fan.
I've got tab for the Face Down stuff.. (3:00-4:00).. it's in the photos section of the Haji facebook somewhere. It's the only one I ever took the trouble to write out tho.. sorry!
No problem, I will look for them and thanks for the response Derek
Monstrous playing and tone. What strings are you using?
+david logsdon Thanks! GHS contact core super steels in this case... 130, 101, 80, 60, 48 & 35... I like them a bit heavier than what comes from the factory.
What chain do you use for these videos man? Killer sound
Thanks! Signal chain and gear stuff is almost always in the main description. :)
Great playing ! Its Tuned Down To A or Drop A ?
Thanks! It starts in drop A, goes up to B with a Hipshot flip at :55, and back down to A at 3:53.
hey I have a question I hope you can answer... what album is the original songs (I say original because of the confusion from the album twenty twelve) "lost" and "day after day" featured in the Dragonball Z - Broly the legendary super saiyan on....
I want to find those songs so bad! I can't find them anywhere. and I would also like to know the vocalist for those songs! tytytytytytyty
I can indeed answer. Vocalist was Vince Mullins.. same guy that was on our Sucker Punch album in 2001. The versions in the DBZ movie were demos, and were never released as singles or on any albums.
This would be cool to hear on a warwick thumb, to hear how much it might sound like the signature "Martinie" tone.
it's funny... I've never been a mudvayne fan in the least (I reaaaallly checked out of metal in the 2000's), but I'll also admit I haven't heard much of it. I'll have to give some of it/him an honest listen sometime.
@@derekofbass At least the Nocturnus part sounded like it. A lot of the dead note pops going up to a high note is something Ryan might do (and does in the old mudvayne stuff).
@@derekofbass Just saw your interview on ForBassPlayersOnly. Now I understand why it sounds similar to a warwick, because of that bubinga body and wenge neck. Traditionally a warwick thumb would have an ovangkol neck and wenge fretboard (or during the time they had a wenge shortage, they used tigerstripe ebony)
Awesome man. what are the electronic options of this one? this is the ab1 right?
I'm not sure what the available options are, tbh. Yea, this is the "heavy" bubinga/wenge variant of the AB1 though. Glockenklang preamp with the FD3 pickups that were standard at the time are in the vid. Since then, I've had the alnico FDV pickups put in, and added the individual series/parallel switches for each pickup tho.
Ok cool. See i was looking at getting an ab1 and trying to see if the glocks would be a better option than the darkglass in the preamp
I don't know if they offer the Darkglass in the AB's or not.. it's nice, but it's not a full distortion B7K circuit or anything. I like the Glock because it's really transparent and quiet. I want to hear the bass first.. my B7K can come after when needed. :) If you've got questions as to what's do-able, I'd email sales@dingwallguitars
Its an option. Ive just never heard a glock before and there arent many tagged videos with it. I have the ng2 with the dg and sometimes its a little spicy so i was trying to check out the glock for my next purchase which will be an ab1xxx6. That research led me to this awesome video
I have the b3k and with bright strings and the dg tone capsule i find myself shutting off the preamp a lot of times
FUCK you're so good.
also what kind of strings are those? (brand/gauge)?
miguelr246 GHS contact core super steels.. 130, 101, 80, 60, 48 & 35 if I remember correctly.
ok thanks
I just need to add a d to my name n add10000.hours of practicing......
that sounds about right.. lol! I could have been SOOOO much more productive! =D
Sorry it took me so long to sub your channel sir, I was serving time in the mobile infantry! =)
It's cool, Nuke... it obviously made you the man you are today!
Do you have less frets on the lower strings?
+Luis Espinoza Yes. Sheldon and I call that a "slap pocket".. it's more comfortable for my thumb when slapping.
+Derek Blakley What's the price of that Dingwall?
I think full retail price is over $9000? (We went *all out* designing this one) I do get a substantial discount in exchange for endorsement, but I still paid quite a bit for it.
+Derek Blakley Woah that's a lot, how long have you been playing bass?
About 30 years.
3:50 WTF!
Derek not only DINGS the WALL (see what I did there?)...he crushes it and turns it into dust. (as you can see by the Band-Aid on his right hand once in awhile) ;) Awesome playing bud...you inspired me to buy a Dingwall...two years later, I have 4...and almost a divorce cuz of it....hmm...maybe I shouldn't be thanking you LOL.... Great job as usual...cant wait for Haji's Kitchen to fill my ears! Cheers from Toronto
+Scooter Mcgavin FOUR Dingwalls? You spoiled rat! I bet you're a Leafs fan, too.. sad. :P
+Derek Blakley Puuulease....Leafs fan! ahahaha. ..maybe back in the day when the sport had tough guys and some heart. Now it's almost unbearable to even watch..it's almost like soccer on ice...I see more faking and muscle pulls, than in my bedroom!! :) OK. .it's not THAT bad. lol
Yeah four Dingwalls... (your fault)...but I just sold one yesterday afternoon...so I'm "down" to three. Lol. .. one day I hope to nail "twinkle twinkle little star"...that's such a stellar riff. haha. Cheers.
+Scooter Mcgavin I still find plenty to like about the game these days.. but when it comes to TML, I do miss those Sundin/Mogilny/Roberts/Tucker/Corson/McCabe era lineups!
Doesn't seem like there's a strong emotional connection to the music. Play a song you love, man!
+Alex Gottschalk eh? sorry... it's hard to jump around like I'm in Dillinger and stay in the camera frame...
You look like an angrier Mark Hamill......love it
