I can't explain why, but I'm obsessed with extended range instruments. It's like they unlock forbidden notes you're not supposed to play. Fascinating instrument, and super high quality demo.
100% my boy
a fascinating endeavor indeed. the E string is about 4mm dia :D
but there are reasons instruments have the common ranges they do... in this particular case, the target audience is quite limited as v few home systems can play 20-30Hz at adequate quality and even fewer of the pro sound systems (live), if any. what most ppl are hearing are the 'regular' notes (41Hz and up), the first harmonics of the actual played notes.
also our ears aren't that good at decoding such low pitches and that's the reason it kind of sounded out of tune here and there :)
This is exactly how I felt when I first discovered Kagyraa overtone singing, where you can cause harmonic oscillations to make your vocal cords oscillate at half their normal pitch, meaning that you can sing an octave lower than normal, and it sounds super crazy.
There is a guy on Chris Liepe's vocal coaching channel who has been doing overtone singing for 33 years, and using it in a death metal band, and made the first noise that has legitimately caused a visceral, primal fear reaction, everytime I hear it, no matter how prepared I am.
@@duroxkilo I see what you mean, if that's the standard, there's probably a very good reason for it. But isn't it fun to explore the "what if" scenarios ? :D
That being said, a good pair of headphones (Sony XM3 in my case) can pretty much go that low (see rtings review, the response is flat until 20hz).
@@ThoR52 i'm sure those sonys have output at those frequencies... as mentioned, not that many ppl have access/use this kind of equipment.
that being said, if can we actually hear that low is a different topic :)
we're used to the 20Hz-20kHz range being mentioned everywhere when in reality 'young healthy ears' don't really hear all that. by the time we're 30yo that range has (naturally) shrank a lot, at least 25%.
when a transducer plays such low fqs, it also puts out a respectable amount of distortion -some manifests itself as harmonic ringing. this is power depended, so when the amp feeds enough power @20Hz, the speaker/headphone also plays 10Hz, 30, 40, etc... in most cases what we hear is mid 20s Hz and up to about 12-14kHz depending on our age.
another different fascinating fact is that for ppl who have a bit of knowledge of pitch/frequencies and know how an musical instrument sounds, a recording can 'fool the ears' into hearing 'the fundamental' when in facts it's not there.
and that is how today's small bluetooth boomboxes appear to go as low as 40Hz when in reality the mastering cuts output at 80Hz, adds a bit of distortion and the rest happens in our brains :)
there's a guy on yt showing all kinds of 'auditory tricks' used in mastering and i thought you'd find this particualar one interesting
Legend has it this instrument can produce the brown note.
Classic
@@micemr76 Splat!
Ooohhh....
Your mom produces the brown note.
@@brainsplosion3000 what are you, stuck in the late 90's?
I dropped a duce to this so it's confirmed
Look at what you have done,
8 string guitarists!
If we're talking territories, then bassplayers should leave everything above the 5th fret alone - thát is where your guitarist comes in.
As a keyboard player I don't give a hoot either way 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🙏
@@claudevieaul1465 and you are the best example of someone who don't undersrand music at all. You act like you sad something cool but you actually just embarassed your self as a musician. If you are one anyway.
Hahahaha Excellent comment!
You're welcome! Now we need to see what the 9 stringers cause!
to be fair extended range double bass and piano has been a thing for a long time, it only makes sense that there was an electric version
I can't get enough of this bass. I've ALWAYS wanted a bass that could play at 20-25Hz consistently without extra strings
Always wondered with the rise of 808s and rap/hip hop elements in metal and other genres when they'd start making instruments that could legitimately make those kinds of sounds. I definitely think this is the future!
@@IAmALiteralDragon It's amazing. I made one myself as a teenager but it was literally a log with 2 strings on it lol
Once you get below a certain frequency, pitch becomes impossible to discern, and you can't actually hear the fundamental, only the harmonics.
@@MukesBoy hell yeah brother it's like a washtub bass but with l o g
@@lsswappedcessna 4 sho. I like mine to sound like a slack rubber band but with as little fret rattle as possible
As a luthier, I applaud the innovation , and the bass looks amazing. Bravo.

Definitely got the mental cog wheels turning hasn't it!
As a regular guy: who asked you ,anyway?
@@sergioaraya681 you did. Yesterday.

This is how we got distortion and a lot of other sounds that went mainstream. Experimenting is fun and sometimes sounds great. This bass is amazing
Yes! Gotta push the envelope. Eddie Van Halen HID his tapping because it was so against the grain. Now it’s a major part of lots of players’ styles!
The bass practically slaps itself as you go down in tuning. love it.
It's great that the frequency is so low that you can hear the individual peaks
First video we see from you in months and you're sporting this BEAST of a bass! Love to see you back, Nathan!!!
Hi Patrick,
I fed this video through my 2x18 cab.

Patrick, is there one bass video on UA-cam that you haven't watched and commented on? 😀 ❤️
@@TenFalconsMusic 🤣
Thanks, Patrick! Good to be back, man. 😁
EXACTLY what I thought! Some bad-ass bass stuff going on here.
Now I'm wondering what this bass would sound like with different gauge strings... Let us know Nate
That shape is amazing. Definitely one of the most aesthetically pleasing basses I've seen in the last few years
It looks like as if it is a normal bass being spaghettified crossing a Black Hole's Event Horizon, so cool 😂
7:55 is just heavenly
Full blast in headphones has no right to be so blissful
And just imagine if you had a sub that could really play those frequencies.
Agreed
Finally, THANK YOU! Thank you for playing just the instrument alone without music. No one does this for some reason. Blessed Be
You need to make a bass collection video
Absolutely
Absolutely
yes pls
Can only imagine what the band "Yes" would've sounded like if Chris Squre had this bass included in his bass guitar arsenal.
👼Like heaven
Chris Squier had a bass tuned to a low c if I remember correctly... He used it on big generator
The fact your sound is audible via a phone speaker is impressive on its own for a sub bass!
Have you tried headphones? It’s absolutely crazy
@@eldoctordeltac I will soon lol
What you're hearing on the phone speaker are the high harmonics. Phone speakers are too small for sub bass frequency
Find your buddy with the car stereo
Shits unff
@@EchoLog I’m gonna try it right now :D
There was a guy around Chicago who had an ultra-low bass. As I recall the lowest string didn't go a full octave below a standard E but it was pretty damn low, F# I think. Anyhow, I remember him saying he would play super low notes a tiny bit ahead of the beat because it took longer for the note to form.
thats pretty cool! haha classical musicians play ahead of the beat as well because they take a while to reach the correct dynamic.
@@terran236uhhhhhh, no?
Some Architects songs do a drop B tuning, except they yeet that B all the way down to F#
Notably on the Holy Hell album (Doomsday might've been G# F# B E, but for example Royal Beggars is F# F# B E)
Metalcore may not be the genre for you, but your comment brought that these thoughts to my mind
@@sirvaniss uhhhhh yes. Maybe I should have specified, bowed strings.
@@terran236 Okay, I guess lol, if the goal is to be at a specific dynamic right on the beat
The Harmonics Riff sounded unreal
For real!!
It gave me anxiety
One of the neatest bass vids ever. I would definitely like to have one of those basses. A 12-string version might sound nice.
I can keep from laughing when you play the E string 😂It reminds me of when I was a kid and we'd take something and hit the big cables that held up the power poles 😀
That's exactly what I was thinking!! 🤣
That's exactly the sound I want. I would kill to have this piece.
So power cables are tuned to E. Interesting.
Like hitting a garden hose with a baseball bat
@@enijize1234It was weird, strings are not suppose to flop around on an instrument in that manner. It sounded like mud on top of sludge. If that's the sound he was going for more power to him. I would prefer a lighter attack to diminish that effect.
Brother, this sounded incredibly deep on my sub-woofer system.
This is what happens when the musician and engineers come together and build instrument. Awesome and at the same time unreal. I never thought that the instrument of this scale can be played with such ease. Very good solution of the extended body.
I think this needs to be a common instrument! The sound is incredible and the bass is beautiful!
I'm kinda in love with the look, like if a normal guitar is an axe, this is a halberd
That was awesome. I can only imagine how it feels to be hit with those notes in person. Also, I really love the design of that thing. It looks beautiful!
“Hey, have you heard of Lignum?”
“What’s Lignum?”
“Lignum Bass!”
Finally someone do this with mixing skills and clear intonation at the same time 🎉
An unbelievably powerful bass. Thunderously percussive. I think it has it's use, but I don't think I could use it for my wedding band gig. If you find it's right vein, it's an awesome instrument. I like it.
Honestly those weddings music could be way more rad lol
I personally believe weddings need more mosh pits, so...
Church band.
@@JohnnyArtPavlou The closest I've gotten to this beast is to use my 5-string, and tune to a drop-A (same as the lowest note on a piano). Definitely separates me from the guitar! (And yes, in a church band! 🙂 )
Play something like the interlude bass piece of Orion at a wedding on this
That is by far the sickest bass I have ever seen or heard, and you are bad ass at playing it. Still I cant help but wonder what the likes of Geddy Lee or Les Claypool would do with that beast of a bass.
I think soon we will see more basses like this everywhere.
Now you made me want one sooo bad. Thank you. You are incredibly talented and educational while letting us enjoy your playing. BASS IS BEST!!!
I would love to see a full band play with drums, guitar, regular bass, and sub octave bass. That would be sick
It’s called Meshuggah. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Me too that sounds like an awesome idea
And a Bass VI!
FOUR OCTAVES!!!!
Two basses? It would sound too muddy. Bad idea.
@@mechanicrainbow2709 depends upon what each player’s role was in the music. If everyone was playing quarter notes, then sure, it would probably sound muddy.

Nate, what an amazing bass! That thing looks so cool, and it sounds so monstrous! I hope you incorporate that bass in your new music because that bass sounds really cool! It would be sweet to get a bass that big and that nice! Being an actual tall guy at 6‘8“ tall that would definitely come in handy because I got really big hands and plus it would make plenty of sense because I can reach all the way down to the first fret and i’m sure I probably wouldn’t have a difficult time playing arpeggios and scales on that bass, I didn’t know they had a 42 inch scale bass and that’s a really huge bass lol my God 😮 that thing sounds mean! Keep on rockin brother! I always love tuning in and checking out your videos!
Thanks, Alexander! Yeah, this bass sounds fitted just for you! haha All my best to you. 😁
@@NateNavarro thanks brother! I’m glad to see you’re doing good! Are you still touring with Porcupine Tree? I know you were a touring member. I watched some of your videos with Porcupine Tree and it was absolutely fabulous. Your live performances are great! It’s crazy being 6’8”, having long arms and very big hands so it’s not very hard for me to stretch my hand on an extended range neck whether it’s on a guitar or bass, i’ll be honest Rea being tall, has it’s advantages and disadvantages, I get a lot of back and knee pains sometimes, but being tall means I can see over people, but I don’t get an opportunity to drive some race, cars, or any sports cars that are small but yeah man keep up the hard work brother! 🎸🤘
6'8" gang! I'd love to try this out as well, I'm just a drummer instead lmao
@@TallMatt Dude that’s badass, I can play guitar, very much similar to the way I play bass, I have even skills at both instruments, I also can sing and I also played trumpet throughout my school years from 5th grade through 12th, basically most places I go I’m usually the tallest person, there’s not very many people that are as tall as me or taller than me, I am on there is someone taller than me, I complement them, so are you already in a band?
@@alexanderkostan2488 A band comprised of people who are at least 6'6" would be unprecedented, and with good original material could very well gain popularity.
A nice 30-45 minute concept instrumental album with some of these riffs would be amazing 👏
Omnific is a band with two bassist and a drummer.
catch 33 already exists
Imagine also Tool songs with this! Many don't like tool but their bass sounds so primal and growly
@biohazard8295 Ahh man I absolutely love tool with Paul D'amour and especially Justin Chancellor. This style riffing though with Danny and Adam Jones would be beyond nasty. Good call
@@Lordoftheswollen Also Morkobot. Great band.
With this bass, it now would make sense to have two bass players! One of these and a standard bass.
Nah, a crossover model like the Ibanez SRC6MS-BLL
Then a baritone guitarist, a regular guitarist and a tenor guitarist :)
@@MidtownSkyport you just described a prog metal band
Only if they played Big Bottom by Spinal Tap!

There is no way this is actually useful for anything but metal, and I love it.
No, 808s and electronic basses have subs in the 20 to 50 range, so this can be hella useful in those genres as well, it's all about the tone u put on the face/harmonics
I play bass at my church from time to time when I'm not trucking, I'd love to give this a go when playing 😈😈
Would be amazing for trip hop
I would love to use this for some experimental genre fusion post punk
You should look up the octobass.
That looks and sounds incredible! I think adding a high C string would be a cool thing to experiment with in the future
That's sick! I'm impressed with the sound, didn't expect it to be ... Well ... Not horrible xD
The harmonics part is astonishingly beautiful
The geometry of this instrument is pure genius. I'm not a bassist, but this is extremely cool.
Sitting here on the couch, watching a video with my Smartphone speakers that go down to max 100hz - of a bass guitar that normaly goes down to 40hz, that has a low E at 20hz - although the human ear only can hear frequencies of 30hz..
Love it!
Human hearing range is 20hz to 20khz, mostly.
Human hearing goes down to 20hz, but a bass string isn't really producing any fundamental frequencies below A0
Good explanation of pre amp, pickup, and Hz settings and function. Most guys don't talk about that.
That harmonic section you played was a VIBE!
This is my new favorite video
Ok, hear me out... next time you collaborate with Devin Townsend, please convince him to use this monster 🔥
Dev would tune it down to open C haha
One time I got to play a Bösendorfer that had an extended keyboard down to C0. It sounded awesome especially when blended with upper notes. It gave an extra set of harmonics with the beat frequencies involved.
My 5 string Electric Bass has a 34 inch Scale but the headstock is slightly angled which puts the strings at a sharper angle over the nut so it pulls them a bit tighter than normally.
This is amazing!!!!! New world of sounds, more new option to creativity! Great from you and the golden hands of the guys who made it
I LOVE this bass and your playing
1:57 I love how your voice gets bass boosted when you said 'full 42 inches'
I hope one of the big bass companies picks up this idea so we can all buy one!
Messhugah called and asked for their djent back… dude. Duder. Dudest. This is awesome
Wow that sounds like a real amp killer
Oh my...
@@KyleBGanger Except for my first bass amp. Lmao
@@KyleBGanger I know that 1000 watt amp is clean and NOT cranked lol
But really, everybody's been fed the Guitar Center lie that you can't use bass through a guitar amp. Even Twin Reverbs can handle bass
When they notice the transatlantic cable is missing a few strands, we'll know where you got strings for that tone monster!
Chris Squire did something similar I believe he had a custom 40” scale bass built to reach suboctaves.
And I have to say I'd much rather listen to Chris Squire than this muddled puddle of distortion...
MTD custom 4 string 3 frets longer at the nut . Because Mr.Squire wasn't comfortable playing a 5 string ..
He demonstrates it on you tube interview ...sounds really clean low end beautiful .
Incredible
It’s impressive that you can hear the notes at all
Giving the bridge its own little platform to maintain string tension is absolutely genius
That is a gorgeous instrument! Congrats 👍🏻👍🏻
LIGNUM nutz

wow it looks and sounds amazing Nate
what a bass
It's so sad that Nathan died of Lignum
7:55 that riff is incredibly intriguing... I really dig it a lot. If it is already a song, what's it called? If it isn't, I hope you develop it into one because it's haunting and now stuck in my head.
Beautiful bass, btw. Get some CNC printed nobs and it will be perfect.
Sounds like an entrance theme for a horror movie villain
This is some of the most phenomenal badassery I've ever seen!
Love it! You play that in a big venue, you better issue a warning of possible heart palpitations
In progressive music, THUMB has YOU!
I just want to know, where do you get strings for that monster? 😂 it sounds amazing though
Check out a company called Octave Four Plus, strings for extended ranges 👍
Very cool, I always wondered why they never extended the bodies on lower strung instruments. Very cool indeed!!
his instrument matches his voice, this is amazing
Oh, man... I can FEEL the sound deep in my chest even by hearing through earphones... That's incredibly amazing!
I hope they patented this. I see this becoming huge.
I see what you did there -- even if it was unintentional! 😀
You can’t patent a tuning and scale length lmao. Why would you want that anyway
3:53 please do a full song like this, this was sooooo beautiful
I'll ask the question we all wanna know... How much Lignum?
THE E IS LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT TO LOWEST FREQUENCY HUMANS CAN HEAR
Wow! This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. Some of these bands that tune down to L# or Drop W would still sound tight with this.
I kinda wish I could play one..... and maybe try an octave pedal with it. 😲
that is amazing. the low string sounds less like a note and more like noise in a really cool way.
Definitely rewatching this in my car with a 15" sub!
My question to you is - how do you go about tuning that beast, and do you have any tips?
Edit: Wow, E actually sounds really thick with all of its harmonics. That's an impressive instrument.
He simply uses a phantom camera that records 100,000 frames per second, records his bass string on video, then rewatched the film and calculates how many times per second it vibrates. The equation then gives him his tuning. Simply repeat the process till in tune😂
I would assume it's tuned with the twelfth fret octave and just hope that the intonation is spot on
Really smart bridge placement. The idea blew me away.
Nate: Hey Lignun, make me a bass as deep as my voice!
Lignum: Just hold my beer...
Now seriously, it sound insane! By the way, the string set for that behemoth must be ridiculously expensive!
That Scale length appears to be like a Double Bass
I've been playing bass for 34 years and this is literally the tone I've always wanted but couldn't have because I didn't want 6 strings. I wanted 4 and 4 only an little to no effects. I'm losing my mind.

*DOOM (2016) video game this intro had me thinking of* 🤘💪
omg the harmonics sound PERFECT! this bass is the BEST!!
That's mind blowing Nathan
Super thick and low as Hell
A little widening of the fretboard from like the 12th fret on the bass side might be beneficial. Classical luthiers do this because strings at lower tension tend to have a wide string path and having a bit of board underneath at the widest part of the string path is useful.
I also wonder if maybe a low boost circuit that simply blends in a low pass version of the sun frequencies would help give it more ass and less clank for those parts where the overtones make it sound out of tune.
