  • You specifically asked for it so here is my first Chibson to try out for you due to popular demand. This came with very few issues for a Chinese knock off. However be warned this is the exception rather than the rule and even this came with poor pickups and electronics and cost a fair bit to correct.
    Enjoy!!!!!
    :o)
PS: Just for Gibson and their LAWYERS - I REMAIN COMPLETELY ANTI-FAKE GUITAR TRADE!!!
Thanks for watching and take good care folks!

    PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT:
Once more for those who think it is acceptable to attempt to use profanity on this video or anywhere on my channel - you will be immediately deleted, blocked and forgotten!
It is NOT illegal to buy a Chibson, though it DEFINITELY IS unethical. I bought two of them five years ago as a journalistic experiment so I could glean enough knowledge to speak with any degree of authority on them. Since then I have bought no more Chibsons {ZERO} and have spent a lot of time, money and effort to warn others of the pitfalls.
Feel free to challenge the counterfeit trade, feel free to be as anti-Chibson as I am, but also be respectful of others. I do not attack those who believe these guitars are fair game, they are as entitled to their opinion and beliefs as the rest of us. Those attempting to be rude to me or others on my channel are not welcome and should simply stop watching.
Anyone posting polite, respectful views no matter how diverse are most welcome and I will respond to your posts when ever I can. Thank you!

I have a Chinese copy of a Stradavarius violin. It cost me $2K 15 years ago. A lot less than the $5M an original would cost. I could have bought American, German, French, or Italian copies from $7K to 25K. I am very happy with the Chinese copies. They play as good as I do.

purple hart is a very dense wood, so here it is why your guitar is so heavy my friend . The guitar looks brilliant to me. I have a zakk wylde camo made in china and I changed the hardware and pickups with a Z W American set. I am so happy with the outcome. The color is not that camo as suppose to be, but my guitar it's more than a beast at the lowest price possible.

A very well-thought-out unboxing and you didn't pull any punches and I would agree it's a very nice looking guitar. From my own experience I went to Guitar Center and played an American Standard Strat and then picked up a Infinity Squier and if you ask my son who was there I sound equally crappy on both of them. So this kind of a guitar would fit right in with my Firefly ES-335 copy which I love, and my BG guitar assassin Strat. I do have a fender tube amp however that I run these all through and I have found that if you crank up the volume loud enough the flat spots and all the buzzing go right away. Good job keep up the good work!

There is nothing wrong with buying a foreign made guitar, or any other product. As long as you know the labor is paid a decent wage and the materials are not only safe (i.e. lead, cadmium, etc) and the wood is sourced legally and ethically. The problem is the copy right and trade mark issues. At least the great Yamahas and Akaiis from the late seventies which were blatant fender Stratocaster copies bore the name of the maker.

Rarely do I post comments, however the need to make one is burning bright.
It only takes a tiny amount of research on UA-cam to see that there are great chibsons out there. Straight out of the box. Some require additional work, but even at another 100-200 dollars (which would be quite extreme considering the complaints common from many other youtubers) you're still getting a great deal. I fail to see your argument against buying these. Most people are not going into this trying to scam other people out of money. They're buying it for personal use.
Your average person does not have 5000 dollars to spend on a guitar. Yes, saving is a very real and quite achievable goal. Regardless, you should probably be using the money for something else. A child's college fund, a very decent used car, a nice vacation with your family, paying off debt, etc.
At some point you're just paying for brand name. And that, my friend, is a business model doomed for failure.
My major gripe with your channel and it's purpose is that you could be taking what in most cases, is a great instrument out of the hands of the next jimi Hendrix, SRV, BB king, Jeff beck. Merely because you don't like that the Chinese can now make Gibson guitar copies at a 75% success rate ( see other UA-camr's videos)? I think it's unethical to do that! You could potentially be denying the world of great music. Most of the greats came from humble backrounds.
I would be more forgiving if it weren't crystal clear that you're approaching this from a biased viewpoint and then trying to present it as an accurate representation of Chinese made guitars.
I think that it's petty, and low to try and deny someone something because perhaps you or other commenters spent 3-5k on a real gibson ( I haven't bothered to find out if you own a real one). And now because of globalization a person can get basically what others have payed 5000 to own, you can now have for 200-300?
My last and most important point is this: it's all about the music! You're pointing out minor details on an instrument that essentially make very little difference to it musically. We want more music in the world and not less! I honestly could care less whether or not some giant company gets money it may or may not be due. Put great guitars in the hands of as many kids as you can.
Additionally, what you fail to note is aliexpress is a customer based service. If you can document with photos, and video you can essentially get a full refund and keep the guitar ( that has been documented by other UA-camrs).
In conclusion, what I see is a grown man whining on the internet, that does not understand what "ethics" is. It's ethically wrong for Gibson to charge musicians 5000 dollars/quid for something that can clearly be duplicated at 250-300 ( and I imagine at a profit).
You're so pretentious that you caused someone (me), to make their first UA-cam comment. I couldn't stop myself. Grow up. The world is as it is. Over 300 hundred thousand people have watched this video. It really gets under my skin that you probably discouraged at least a few people from learning to play a musical instrument. I hope you can live with that kind of karma. I know I couldn't.

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  8 років тому

Benjamin Anderson You obviously have't watched many of my videos Benjamin. The ONLY thing I do is present honestly about these things and I often get criticized for being too positive toward them. When I find something good I say so - this particular guitar like so many Chinese fakes was awful out of the box and needed so much work to make it playable - if you can't hear that then perhaps you are not a player. I am neither biased nor a Gibson owner. I am a guitarist who has worked on many guitars over the last 30 years and even built a few myself.
It makes me very proud that I have indeed hopefully saved a lot of people from buying Chinese fakes and getting ripped off or at very least a whole lot of trouble. I have many people who have thanked me for that.
Conversely I have many more who have either not seen my advice or who have bought one anyway, who regretted it very quickly.
The people promoting these on You Tube are too often inexperienced or at least misguided - somewhat like yourself Benjamin.
I'm pleased one of my videos finally woke you up and you bothered to comment on something after 3 years on You Tube, but I hope your future posts are more considered and mature than your first. Unlike your clear vitriol toward me, I only wish you well buddy - that's the way Karma works. :-)

I bought one a couple months ago. I expected to replace the pickups, tuners and nut, but so far I have been satisfied. I will probably replace the pickups with Seymour Duncan Slash Alnico's at some point, and maybe the nut with bone. The finish is excellent, except the fingerboard, which has numerous scratches that should have been buffed out and also a couple gouges about 3 mm deep, 1.5 mm wide and 6 or 7 mm long. I can fix the scratches, but not the gouges. So, except for the fly, the ointment is good.

So its likely those illegal ones are well made far as the wood ,trim, paint etc., but lacks good bridge hardware.

There are a lot of negative comments which is totally understandable. For one, not everyone can or wishes to spend upwards of 3-4k for a Gibson LP. Second, many people don't play enough or are "hardcore" if you will, to justify the expense. There is nothing wrong with someone who decides this is a better route for them to replicate the feel if they wish. I am not saying you should or shouldn't, but for you who say never buy made in china; inspect every item in your house and see what a hypocrite you are.

ryanh0190 If you want a less expensive Les Paul you don't need a counterfeit one with Gibson on the headstock. There are perfectly fine Chinese les-paul type guitars that aren't trying to pretend to be authentic Gibsons. It's fraudulent, no doubt about it. It's not saving him any money to buy one of those over buying one with some other name on it like Agile or Douglas. It's only rewarding fraudsters and now he's got a guitar that he can't sell to anyone without the fear they might choose to resell it as authentic. The only honorable course this guy has with this guitar is to destroy it at this point.

It's a win-win situation for you if you're honest with your customers and tell them they're going to have to spend another hundred dollars to have the thing made playable. People buying these with the Gibson name on them ultimately leads to people being scammed whether it's intentional or not. Sooner or later every guitar changes owners and at that point the seller may misrepresent the guitar or it's origin is forgotten such as when someone is settling an estate for a relative that has passed. At that point, some poor trusting person will get ripped off. The more that are out there, the more likely this will happen. Spend an hour or two looking through ebay and craigslist listings and you will spot one or two of these being sold as a real Gibsons if the seller provided decent pictures where you can tell. Probably a whole bunch of others that aren't so easy to spot when the pictures are poor. If someone feels they have to buy one of these things at least have the decency to not get one with the Gibson logo to try and pretend you have something you don't.

@@Chinaguitarsceptic one way of spotting a fake is the serial number on the back of the head stock. Gibson hand stamps the serial number and then applies the finish over it. The Chinese ones are heavy stamped over the finish and then leaving it raw. There are other subtle differences such as tuning keys, bridge, fit and finish. If you know what to look for, it's easy to spot the fake.

Wet wood is hard to work with. It doesn't glue or take finishes very well. It has to be dried to a degree to work with. Vintage Gibson LP's were light because they were made of Honduran mahogany. During the Norlin years, Gibson switched to African mahogany which is much heavier. People complained about the weight so Gibson eventually switched back. These days, Honduran mahogany is protected and hard to get. Gibson went back to African mahogany but they chamber the bodies now.

Depending on the guitar being purchased, guitars made in China can be quite acceptable. I purchased a new made in China EVH Wolfgang Special w/case for about $1000.00 and it is one of my better playing/sounding guitars, in fact it sheds pretty good and has the Floyd Rose D-Tuna bridge/locking nut setup which is actually great except, I have no need for the D-Tuna at all, just a waste of money in my opinion. I also bought a new Fender EVH Wolfgang Stealth USA w/case and that was about $3000.00. which plays just slightly better than the EVH Wolfgang Special I purchased which was made in China. I actually was able to try both of these guitars out before making a purchase to be sure I was going to like them. After playing both of them, I ordered both of them new, and am happy with my purchase. I think there are some fairly good inexpensive guitars made in China that can be fairly well built, but I would recommend going to dealerships and checking them out before actually making a purchase. I also bought 3 Fender Stratocasters which were made in China and I have no problem with those guitars either, just needed to change out the stock pickups, but not bad for the money $400.00 - $600.00 and each came with a gig bag. Buyer beware of purchasing any used guitar from Ebay, there are some real ripoffs happening there!

I would hate to support communist China, anymore than I have to. I try to buy only American made products, but they are unfortunately few and far between. As for the crappy sound, I wonder if the Gibson pickups would fit in the slots of the Chinese crap pickups? Also could you change out the cheap tuners with real Grover tuners? Also replace any plastic parts. Chinese plastic, and rubber do not last, much more than a year or so. They split, crack, etc. Just look at the cheap Chinese plastic bodies of some of HF portable table saws. The have plastic bodies, and will crack and split with a year or two. That being said, if the fit and finish is good, and you can replace the cheap tuners,, and pickups, with real Gibson equipment, you are still ahead of the game as far as price goes. I am not a big fan of Gibson any more. Their quality control has slipped back to the same as in the mid to late 60's. I was in High School, in the mid 60's, and was in a music store, and was looking at a Gibson hollow body guitar in a cherry red finish, and there was red stain, and finish strips, and splashes inside, and could be viewed through the "F" holes. No I did not buy it. That is also when Gibson started losing out in the Banjo market, as their entire quality control went to hell in a hand basket, and was just trying to get by on their name alone. Didn't work well. I keep seeing reviews of Gibson guitars, and the over all majority had complaints about the quality control. I still check out Gibson guitars now and then, and the acoustics just don't have the old Gibson sound. I don't know if after a year or so of playing, or leaving it propped up against a stereo, at medium volume while you are working, or away, will improve the tone, or not. But it worked for my late 70's Martin HD28. It sounded good before, but in about six months or so, the sound was amazing! It still has amazing sound and volume. The Gibson's that I have played, sounded rather low end type of guitars, but their prices sure were not low end! Personally I would take an Epiphone over a Gibson. The Epiphone DR500 is so far superior to any Gibson acoustic electric. A Friend of mine has one, and I just might buy one/ I love my Martin, but the Epiphone sounds just as good, and no near what it would cost me to replace my Martin. It would be around $3,000.00 I cannot blame someone wanting something like these Chinese guitars, but they are going to have to do a lot of work on them to get any kind of decent sound out of them. I would hope they would mark them inside as being made in China, so as to not have someone down the road think they are buying a real Gibson Les Paul, or other style. That being said, it might be worth getting one, and removing all the electronics, and tuners, and replace them with high quality electronics, and chrome plated knobs. And print, or peel a made in China label off some Chinese prouct, and put it on the inside. As for hard to find anything made in America, I have a Gretch G5122 that is made in Korea. I would not have bought it if I had known that. A Friend of mine went to two Fender factories, one in Texas, and one in Mexico. He said he was ashamed that the Texas facility was a mess, and the Mexico one was spotless. It is hard to find anyone who has the slightest inkling of what pride in workmanship is any more. Sad, but it is how our times are. It just seems to be the goal of almost every company to just whip something out, and get out the door, and get another one on the way. It is all about the buck, no pride included.

Hello there CGS, I bought one just like yours several years ago (Obviously not the same seller) and it stays in the case quite often and I noticed the head stock is beginning to show signs of yellowing. Mainly the logo and binding. Just wondering how yours is holding up over the years. Thanks from the U.S.A.

I am a custom Luthier here in the US and have my own line. I find these clones and those who promote them despicable. Copying anyone's hard work and calling it your own is the most unethical thing anyone can do in any business. IT IS THEFT. Let the manufacturers of these clones compete with their own labels if they have any worth.

I couldn't agree more mate. I've spent 5 years and quite a bit of cash making this exact point.

The US stole the jet engine and called it their own. Go figure.

the original concepts of a jet engine go back before the first century AD. I think if you look back over time youd be hard pressed to find "the original creator" of the jet engine. many countries made important strides in advancing what we know as the modern jet engine. I don't recall ever hearing the U.S. pronounce themselves the creator of the jet engine.

HEAVY is NOT GOOD ! Weight=Density=Reduced resonance.. the more air particles in the body wood the better for resonance. how loud would a solid body acoustic guitar be ? super high end Les Pauls are sold as listed by weight.. less weight... more $$$$. this globally know by all pro dealers

The fact that it says "Gibson" on the headstock and case makes this an unethical mess.
