Acetone works very well in dissolving CA Glue, that's probably what the 'Un-cure' is. I use it for cleaning the glue off my fingers (as it always seems to get on there). You will need to use a hand cream after though as you fingers will be de-greased. Acetone is also very cheap.
YESSSSS - In 1986 I worked at our local hobby shop when I was in high school. I learned about ZAP and holy crap it was life changing. Great stuff and yes I glued meself several times (not intentionally) but I used acetone to remove it. I never heard of the flexible superglue. NO WAYYYY on the MDF sealant usage! That's is an awesome tip. Drop of glue on a knot? AWE man, fun times ahead when I glue my friends shoes as I bend down to pick up my pen that I accidentally dropped.
Another great use for superglue is to make concave fillets/gap filling by using it with baking soda! Its similar to your baby powder trick but instead of a paste that you mix and then apply to the crack, you apply the super glue to the crack/gap and hit it with some baking soda. The baking soda sets the super glue instantly into a super sand able plastic like material. The process can be repeated over and over again to produce some pretty large fillets very quickly. The runnier the superglue the better/faster it sets up. At work we keep baking soda in a squeeze mustard bottle so when we lay down a bead of super glue we can "spray" it with some baking soda all with one hand (assuming we are aligning the parts with the other hand). A quick blast of baking soda can also clean up an otherwise questionable work surface/part. It'll harden any exposed superglue so you don't end up stuck to your prop.
The cut comment is actually more on point than it sounds. Super glue was developed as a way to do "field sutures" during the Vietnam War and is still used for eye surgery instead of sutures. Make sure you clean and satanize well since you will be sealing in any germs! And well, like putting alcohol on a cut it will sting like hell till it's cured. Another use. I know a flamenco guitarist who uses it on his fingernails. It's tougher and more chip resistant than nail polish. He is actually who I first learned about the accelerant from. In case anyone wants to try that you should also know that the accelerant generates a fair amount of head while curing so he would spray and then run around waving his hands to try and cool them off...
I store my opened unused super glue in an airtight container such as a babyfood or canning jar with a few desiccant packets in it, keeps the unused superglue from hardening, and also unlike most glues, superglue begins its curing process when it is exposed to moisture, so I suggest to just save money and use a spray bottle with just plain water as your accelerator. Or the baking soda trick if your in need to a mechanical fixure on what your gluing up. Hope this helps someone :)
Great vid, just what I needed. I use the needle bottles to put the superglue in, so it very precise, if the needle get clogged and it will at some point, as it metal you can heat a pin in a lighter flame and it instantly unblock the nozzle, its probably not safe at all, but its what I do.
its also great for cutting material like denim if you don't have access to any cutting kit to hand, put some across the area you want to cut and when it dries flex it, it'll snap as will the material with an instant fray stop too.
Another good tip is to buy the smallest bottles you can, as they have a fairly limited shelf life when opened. A big 4 or 8oz bottle will probably mostly end up going to waste unless you're an insane heavy user. I remember Adam Savage likes to special order the teeny tiny little 0.5oz bottles in bulk just for that reason.
Hey Bill, seeing this just now. Yeah, you could get those glues at your local hobby shop - but us millennials are a lazy bunch. IF you turn your shop into a "one stop shop for all your crafting needs" I could just have those delivered to my door step! Yay technology! Introducing Bill Doran's approved CA glue kit! Including thin, thick, activator spray, and a tiny needle nozzle bottle!
Great Video! Immediately ordered myself some extra bottle tips, we got some crusty ones that need replacing haha! Also, how you joined your printed parts at 4:56 - genius!
Awesome video, watch out for some fabrics though it can get super hot. I think its cotton but just make sure you test it before trying out on final costume fabric
Please use caution when superglueing fabrics, it does react with cotton and wool and will generate a lot of heat. This can hurt and in extreme situations can ignite.
That uncure is more than likely acetone. It's a paint stripper and also works to remove super glue as well, which would explain why that uncure stripped the paint in your example. Nail polish remover is the same stuff.
Acetone is used to dissolve super glue. "old" fingernail polish remover was acetone, the new non acetone stuff doesn't have acetone in it and that may be what is in the Un-Cure. Whatever it is it's probably a nasty solvent you should be careful of, all the good ones are...
The MSDS for Un-Cure (which are a great resource for finding out what mystery products are made of) says it's >95% 'Dimethylformamide', which is apparently a more human-safe alternative to acetone. Doesn't look to be too much cheaper to buy it in bulk though, BSI seems pretty fair :)
Excellent video! Gotta get some activator to speed up the bonds. As far as gluing 3d Prints, I noticedf you had mini dowels to hold the seams together better. Did you make those?
What adhesive is best for making a cheap visor? I’m making a destiny inspired cosplay and I’m using a 2 liter soda bottle for the visor and if one won’t do I’d like to be able to put 2 together with little to no cloudiness as possible.
The first thing I would try is hot glue. Just be sure to scuff up any mating surfaces with some sandpaper to give the hot glue something to grab on to.
If I make a large 3D printed prop with multiple parts, can I use that glue paste to fill in the gaps or do I have to use bondo? Bondo is kinda expensive at Home Depot and I’m really new to prop making.
Thanks for making this video, I've been meaning to request this! But quick question: When I was glueing my first 3D printed project my two surfaces would not take the glue and the parts just slid apart like the glue was water... Is this because I was using acetone on the parts an hour earlier? Also, are you planning to make something like this for sanding? I've attempted sanding only once and did not know how to get the proper finishes.
I really like to use some CA to seal up minor cuts and abrasions. I work in a dirty environment so I stop the bleeding clean the wound. Let it sit for a hour or so with a bandaid on it. Then I clean again and glue it shut. I have not been experimentally enough to spritz some activator though it has crossed my mind about every time. Have you tried the microballoons yet just curious how it compares to the powder?
Havent heard of that baby power technique till you mentioned it on the PKD blaster vid a few weeks ago. Small question, whats the working time on this mix before it hardens on the plate/dish? Im guessing its better to mix up small batches at a time, right?
Great video as always, Bill! I've gotta be more careful, because I've felt that born in my eyes when using superglue, and I didn't realize that was no good. I've also gotta pick up some activator and remover, since I don't really think it's an effective use my time to sit there and hold gluing pieces.
I think Bob Smith's Gold stuff is supposed to not fog lenses and also not melt styrofoam? It may have been released since you made this video, not sure.
It definitely can if you get too much squeeze out. I try to use very small amounts and always recommend doing a test on a small piece of material to see how it reacts to the glue first!
@@punishedprops Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. A friend and i actually just made our first attempt at Nerf props for a YT video. It was a lot fun, and so satisfying to see it all come together. I love watching your vid's, keep it up!

I would probably make a two part mold. You'll have to add a pouring spout somewhere to get the resin in. That spout will need to be trimmed and sanded smooth on the final cast part.

Hi, I used the superglue activator a lot, but ended always up being dizzy, feeling sick for hours. My daughter also seemed to get sick after using it... Now I only use it wearing a gas mask... What's in it?
It's fairly toxic. Best to used it in a well ventilated area. That's another reason I like using that tiny squeeze bottle. That way I'm not spraying it into the air and breathing it in.
I always wipe the tip before recapping and it stops the glue building up to the point the lid no longer fits. My un-cure is made from Nitro-methane and that stuff is really not very nice. It has a very low flash point and they use it for dragster fuel so you need to be careful with it round anything that could set it on fire.
Gorilla SG also has a bit of an elasticiser in it so it is less brittle and has some give which makes it good for stuff that might have small amounts of pressure on it.
Can I really super glue cuts together? Ive stitched my arm before because I didnt want to wait for 6 hours at a hospital to get 5 stitches. I could have just super glue'd? Sweet.

That uncure is more than likely acetone. It's a paint stripper and also works to remove super glue as well, which would explain why that uncure stripped the paint in your example. Nail polish remover is the same stuff.
Yup, we sometimes use acetone at work for smoothing 3D prints and cleaning stuff, but it does sometimes get used for unsticking fingers!

Why thank you!
Thank you for the video and links, very helpful. Would CA glue work with metal pieces?
It works OK, but for metal I prefer JB Weld.
Great video! What glue would you recommend for attaching EVA foam to hard plastic?
Superglue should work well for hard plastic to EVA foam. Make sure to do a small test with scrap pieces first.
Punished Props Academy thank you!

CA has been used on battlefields since the 40s for wounds from major to minor.
Another good video, ty sir. We just tried the super glue with baking soda sprinkled on. It's a sweet seal.
Fantastic!

Yes small batches are good. It's only really good for about a minute.
If you mix it on a small piece of aluminum foil it will extend the time a few minutes, works with just CA glue as well!

What's in it?
It's fairly toxic. Best to used it in a well ventilated area. That's another reason I like using that tiny squeeze bottle. That way I'm not spraying it into the air and breathing it in.
Punished Props Adam savage showed his "activator" on Tested.
He used baking soda. Seemed to work very well. I didn't try it yet.
Why don't you just clean the tips of your CA glue with the CA remover to keep it clear or if it gets all crusty?
The smell will forever live in my house
I always wipe the tip before recapping and it stops the glue building up to the point the lid no longer fits.
My un-cure is made from Nitro-methane and that stuff is really not very nice. It has a very low flash point and they use it for dragster fuel so you need to be careful with it round anything that could set it on fire.
Great tips all around! The spray accelerator is quite flammable too.
What's the best way to super glue off of your fingers
The un-cure helps dissolve it so you can wipe it off.
wouldnt you get the same filler effect if you use wood dust or sanding dust and CA glue.
That would probably work too.
You should see what happens when you drop some of the thin CA glue onto a Kleenex
Is there such a thing as superglue thinner?
I don't believe so but there ARE different thicknesses of super glue! You can get some that is thinner and some that is almost like a gel.
Uncure? You mean Eulg?
"Spudged" is my new favorite verb.
Bwahaha!
i couldnt get the pin out it got glued in !
You can also use baking soda as a thickener / accelerant in a pinch as well!
Great tip!
I once tried using super glue on some fabric and it got warm. What's the reason behind this?
Superglue doesn't dry, it cures. That reaction is exothermic, so it gives off heat.
Gorilla super glue has a needle built into the cap so it will never plug up.
I had no idea, that's awesome!
Sweet.
Well it really depends on how bad of a cut it is.
You forgot the most important name...
THE CRAGLE!!
Oh my goodness the CRAGLE!
Uncure is simply just acetone :)
It doesn't smell like acetone, so I imagine it's something different. Though the effect is similar.
Non-acetone nail polish remover did the trick
Fantastic!
The Un-Cure - isn't it Acetone?
This particular brand is not acetone. At least it doesn't *smell* like acetone.
Any supplies from Smooth On you can bond with plastic cement?
I been using super glue to make prop for about half of a year
It's super handy!
Always gets on my fingers
You and me both!
Try using gloves.
CA glue may not be the best option for fibrous cotton. It's just a little bit of a fire hazard since the reaction can get quite exothermic. :S
Wooooah. I didn't know that.
