  • Pilot VLOG of my IFR flight from Moorabbin Airport to Echuca to check out the paddle steamers on the Murray River. I'm flying a Cirrus SR20 under the Instrument Flying Rules planning to track overhead Melbourne but we're told to hold over Moorabbin before being tracked direct to Mangalore.
    This video features the departure from Moorabbin, many of the IFR radio calls and procedures, the arrival into Echuca and a look around the town. Plus stay tuned for a look at the Murray River and the paddle steamers in this historic town.
    VERY IMPORTANT: I am a private pilot and am NOT qualified to give flying instruction. This video, like all videos on this channel, has been significantly edited from the original source footage and is provided for entertainment purposes only. Many radio calls and procedures have been omitted. If you have any questions about anything you see or hear, please speak to a Certified Flying Instructor first.
    Filmed on a Canon EOSM6, various GoPros, a DJI Spark, and sometimes my iPhone. Audio usually from Epidemic Sound.

    Another great video, Stefan. Echuca is an interesting town blessed with a great aero club. A suggestion: worth a day trip when the Antique Aeroplane Association hold their annual fly- in (March or April every year). Lots (and I do mean lots) of interesting aircraft. The downside is you almost certainly won’t get to park on the sealed areas.

    G’day Stefan,
    You stated that you wanted to put your PPL to a a good purpose , have you considered registering as an Angelflight pilot.
    Given the fact that you have sufficient hours and an IFR rating you may find it very satisfying.
    Once you are on the books you can select the missions that you are interested in and it gives you a really good reason to fly.
    The passengers are usually really nice people who need to travel from country areas to major cities for regular medical treatment and Angelflight handle all of the arrangements for ground transport of the passengers.
    Upcoming missions are emailed to you or you can keep an eye on their website and there is no obligation to accept any mission if you have other commitments.
    It may be worth checking out.
    Cheers
    John B

    Great video Stef. The camera angles work very well and your editing makes it very easy and enjoyable to watch. I do like the style of this type of video which puts the trip in context and acts as a mini travel documentary. Well, you make a great historian as well as pilot. I really enjoyed this one, and the music used throughout was very appropriate. Here's an idea, fly to different regional locations, show us around, then give a brief history of the place. STEFAN'S FLY IN HISTORY EPISODE'S. Actually i think you have probably done a few of these already. Thank's again mate.

    At 10.07 the flag with the Union Jack and the blue and white stripes and a red cross with stars (GOOGLE it) is that of The Australian Colonies INLAND Merchant Marine inasmuch as Echuca was probable the busiest inland port in Australia's colonies. Also. Sad to see NDBs are going. They define an aerodrome. They're still a good basic nav aid but IFR approaches using them are difficult. [ps. NSW owns all of The Murray River up to the high tide mark on the Victorian side. - originally the Murrumbidgee River up North was to be the boundary, but the VIC surveyor Hume got it wrong.]

      @StefanDrury  6 років тому

      Thanks Yoshi. Yes it was around an hour from Moorabbin to Echuca, but some parts of the flight were just me scanning the instruments and maintaining a lookout, which wasn't very interesting to watch! Thanks as always, Stef 👍

      I never condone violence, but I'm glad that slap found its target :) You know David, that sort of comment makes me so happy, because that's one of the primary reasons why I wanted to share flying videos like this. I can be as guilty as the next person of thinking 'it's all too hard' or 'I don't have time' etc. But forcing myself to get out there and fly, and then share the experience, and then hearing that it's encouraging pilots like yourself you to do the same makes me incredibly happy. So thank YOU for taking the time to write that. Can't wait to hear about your next flying adventure mate, happy travels, Stef 👍

    Great Vlog Stefan, have been wanting to ask, i to love the look of the Cirrus but am full on right handed and do bugger all solely with my left after dislocating my left arm 12 times. When i watch you coming into an approach you seam to make dramatic movements with the stick & am wondering if this is just a learning thing or would a right handed person struggle to operate the stick?

  • @timtim7505

    Awesome video, interesting being asked to hold overhead Moorabbin. Out of interest when asked to hold did you position yourself visually overhead the airport or enter the holding pattern on the NDB? Happy new year!!

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 років тому

      Thanks Tim, in this instance I could easily hold visually over Moorabbin, but I did also pause my GPS (by OBS'ing it, so it didn't kick on to the next waypoint) so I could use the MB waypoint on the GPS as a point to hold around. So I was actually flying the hold based on the MB GPS waypoint, but visually confirming outside the cockpit as well.

    Another great Vid Stef!
    I have had this question for a while.
    When you contact Melbourne centre, sometimes you say "Will remain clear of the steps". What does that mean?
    Thank you once again,
    Louis

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  6 років тому

      Thanks Louis, glad you enjoyed that one. So when you say "will remain clear of the steps" you're talking about the controlled airspace steps around Melbourne, ie the Class C airspace. If you tell ATC you'll climb to X altitude but "will remain clear of the steps" they know you'll climb out UNDER Class C, so you don't need a Clearance, as you're never intending on going into controlled airspace. Alternatively, you can depart with an altitude that is within CTA in your flightplan, but you'll need to be cleared to that altitude by ATC first. That's what I do flying IFR North out of Moorabbin, in that case I wait to get my clearance on the ground, then pop up to your altitude into Class C. In the start of this video that's the "Cleared Echuca via Melbourne Mangalore 5000" that Moorabbin Tower gives me, that means I can climb OVER the steps up to 5000 feet into Class C. Hope that helps, cheers, Stef 👍
